Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week.
January 19-26 2024
The Energy Department announced its pausing all new liquefied natural gas export facilities. This puts a pause on export terminal in Louisiana which would have been the nation's largest to date. The Department will use the pause to study the climate impact of LNG exports. Environmentalists cheer this as a major win they have long pushed for.
The Transportation Department announced 5 billion dollars for new infrastructure projects. The big ticket item is 1 billion dollars to replace the 60 year old Blatnik Bridge between Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota which has been dangerous failing since 2017. Other projects include $600 million to replace the 1-5 bridge between Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, $427 million for the first offshore wind terminal on the West Coast, $372 million to replace the 90 year old Sagamore Bridge that connects Cape Cod to the mainland,$300 million for the Port of New Orleans, and $142 million to fix the I-376 corridor in Pittsburgh.
the White House Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access announced new guidance that requires insurance companies must cover contraceptive medications under the Affordable Care Act. The Biden Administration also took actions to make sure contraceptive medications would be covered under Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and Federal Employee Health Benefits Program. HHS has launched a program to educate all patients about their rights to emergency abortion medical care under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. This week marks 1 year since President Biden signed a Presidential Memorandum seeking to protect medication abortion and all federal agencies have reported on progress implementing it.
A deal between Democrats and Republicans to restore the expand the Child Tax Credit cleared its first step in Congress by being voted out of the House Ways and Means Committee. The Child Tax Credit would affect 16 million kids in the first year and lift 400,000 out of poverty. The Deal also includes an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit which will lead to 200,000 new low income rental units being built, and also tax relief to people affected by natural disasters
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted for a bill to allow President Biden to seize $5 billion in Russian central bank assets. Biden froze the assets at the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, but under this new bill could distribute these funds to Ukraine, Republican Rand Paul was the only vote against.
The Senate passed the "Train More Nurses Act" seeking to address the critical national shortage of nurses. It aims to increase pathways for LPNs to become RNs as well as a review of all nursing programs nationally to see where improvements can be made
3 more Biden Judges were confirmed, bring the total number of Judges appointed by President Biden to 171. For the first time in history the majority of federal judge nominees have not been white men. Biden has also appointed Public Defenders and civil rights attorneys breaking the model of corporate lawyers usually appointed to life time federal judgeships

06-07-23 Why Patagonia helped Samsung redesign the washing machine
Samsung is releasing a wash cycle and a new filter, which will dramatically shrink microfiber pollution.
Eight years ago, Patagonia started to study a little-known environmental problem: With every load of laundry, thousands (even millions) of microfibers, each less than 5 millimeters long, wash down the drain. Some are filtered out at water treatment plants, but others end up in the ocean, where fibers from synthetic fabric make up a surprisingly large amount of plastic pollution—35%, by one estimate. Fragments of your favorite sweatshirt might now be floating in the Arctic Ocean. In a collaboration that began two years ago, the company helped inspire Samsung to tackle the problem by rethinking its washing machines. Today, Samsung unveiled its solution: A new filter that can be added to existing washers and used along with a “Less Microfiber” cycle that Samsung also designed. The combination makes it possible to shrink microfiber pollution by as much as 98%.
[…] Patagonia’s team connected Samsung with Ocean Wise, a nonprofit that tests fiber shedding among its mission to protect and restore our oceans. Samsung shipped some of its machines to Ocean Wise’s lab in Vancouver, where researchers started to study how various parameters change the results. Cold water and less agitation helped—but both of those things can also make it harder to get clothing clean. “There are maybe two ways of increasing the performance of your washing machine,” says Moohyung Lee, executive vice president and head of R&D at Samsung, through an interpreter. “Number one is to use heated water. That will obviously increase your energy consumption, which is a problem. The second way to increase the performance of your washing machine is to basically create stronger friction between your clothes . . . and this friction and abrasion of the fibers is what results in the output of microplastics.” Samsung had already developed a technology called “EcoBubble” to improve the performance of cold-water cycles to help save energy, and it tweaked the technology to specifically tackle microfiber pollution. “It helps the detergent dissolve more easily in water so that it foams better, which means that you don’t need to heat up your water as much, and you don’t need as much mechanical friction, but you still have a high level of performance,” Lee says. The new “Less Microfiber” cycle, which anyone with a Samsung washer can download as an update for their machine, can reduce microfiber pollution by as much as 54%. To tackle the remainder, the company designed a filter that can be added to existing washers at the drain pipe, with pores tiny enough to capture fibers. They had to balance two conflicting needs: They wanted to make it as simple as possible to use, so consumers didn’t have to continually empty the filter, but it was also critical that the filter wouldn’t get clogged, potentially making water back up and the machine stop working. The final design compresses the microfibers, so it only has to be emptied once a month, and sends an alert via an app when it needs to be changed. Eventually, in theory, the fibers that are collected could potentially be recycled into new material rather than put in the trash. (Fittingly, the filter itself is also made from recycled plastic.) When OceanWise tested the cycle and filter together, they confirmed that it nearly eliminated microfiber pollution. Now, Samsung’s challenge is to get consumers to use it. The filter, which is designed to be easily installed on existing machines, is launching now in Korea and will launch in the U.S. and Europe later this year. The cost will vary by market, but will be around $150 in the U.S. The cycle, which began to roll out last year, can be automatically installed on WiFi-connected machines.

Taru van den Born is a Dutch blacksmith with a degree in Psychology, who offers training to ND folks, which he believes is therapeutic in many ways. He is doing a wonderful thing for ND folks. Folks like me, as I have ADHD.
I feel the same concepts and benefits could be found in woodworking, or any number of handcrafting/trade fields like smithing and woodworking.
I've certainly found woodoworking immensely beneficial for my ADHD. I didn't even get diagnosed or treated until I was 32. I spent my life before that being terrible at everything, and never sticking with anything for long except music, which I still wasn't very good at. I never understood why and assumed I'd always be a mess. Couldn't even hold a job for very long.
I got into woodworking shortly after getting help for my ADHD. Getting therapy and meds was profoundly life changing. Woodworking (or any craft) is no substitute for proper treatment and I wouldn't be where I am without out the support and good work being done by the docs at the Adult ADHD Clinic at the Hope Centre in North Vancouver. It's the only clinic of it's kind in Canada, a pilot project where adults with ADHD can get help entirely funded by public healthcare.
Woodworking had given me something I can engage with and focus on. I can lose myself in it for hours working on some small detail, existing only in the space between the wood and aris of the chisel. It's grounding, and very gratifying.
It requires a degree of planning and organization. I've gotten a lot of use out of the organization and project management skills I learned in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but also refined those and learned a lot more through woodworking. It's taught me a lot of patience as well.
It's also diverse enough to keep my ADHD brain filled with novelty and change. One day I might be carving dovetails, the next restoring an old tool using electrolysis, the next doing some basic metalworking to make a blade or a thread cutter. There's always new techniques and methods to learn or research to do. Maybe today I'll go down a rabbithole on Victorian furniture decorative carvings, or some obscure facet of making iron age lyres. I've even translated books from Swedish and Finnish just to learn the minutae of Tagelharpa and Jouhikko bowed lyres.
So it gives me a universe of things to explore while staying in orbit around that central point of woodworking.
In the end, I have a physical object I created, or someone else does, but I made it. I can see my progress in physical objective terms. There is something deeply satisfying about that. Its creative but also very functional and practical. I'm engaging my artistic side by making something that is beautiful, or makes beautiful noise. At the same time its something physical which serves a practical purpose.
I never thought I'd be good at anything, but I'm getting good at this, and getting better every day, and that simple thing alone has been so good for my ADHD brain.
Of course, at my job most of my day is just making simple components, customizing doors, or replicating pieces for customers, but its still grounding and satisfying. Sometimes that includes restoring 150 year old doors or replicating Victorian moulding. Replicating or making custom components often requires creativity as I need to work out how to do it, and occasionally design new jigs and guides specific to that component. Sometimes I get to make new tools or equipment, such as a router table, for the shop.
I have to give my company a lot of credit for being a supportive environment that's helped me grow and put up with my constant screwups. This is very much a form of privilege that many of us ND folk can only wish for, and I wish we could all have. Taru van den Born seems to be fostering that kind of environment, which is just as important as any practical skill he might teach there.
I think we all, ND and Normie alike, could learn some things from his example, and I don't just mean how to forge metal.
Anyway thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

“POLICE QUELL ANYOX PARADE,” The Province (Vancouver). February 4, 1933. Page 1.  --- Peace Restored After Demonstrators Make Dash For Town. ---- COMPANY STATEMENT --- VICTORIA. Feb. 4. (CP) Keeping their firearms in their holsters and using their flsts. thirteen officers of the provincial police stood off a body of approximately 400 strikers at Anyox on Thursday evening, repelling two attempts on the part of men to get into the town. In a third attempt the men joined up with another party at the Beach Mine. Order was immediately restored and the affair has simmered down to peaceful picketing of the plant, provincial officials were advised.
Briefly reviewing the facts, a spokesman for the government said that the situation was well in hand and adequate measures were being taken to see that order Is preserved. It must be understood that the province would not provide relief for men who refused the offer of work, he added.
Advices to the government showed that the majority of the large number of men at Anyox wish to continue at work.
MAY CLOSE DOWN. Provincial officers at the scene were reinforced today, and latest reports showed that all was quiet. Representatives of the men have given an undertaking that no damage to property is intended. Provincial officials were chiefly concerned with the possibility that the plant might be permanently closed down by the operating company, which has not sold any copper since 1931 but maintained operations to give employment at the site.
In a statement Issued today. Mr. Charles Bocking, president and managing director of the Granby company, declares: 'Recently radical agitators entered Anyox and succeeded In forming a union, known as the Mine Workers' Union of Canada, which is identified 'with the Workers' Unity League of Canada and the Red Internationale.
"On Monday, January 30, these radicals, made up almost entirely of the foreign element employed at the mine and smelter, held a meeting and presented certain demands to the company officials, some of which were an increase in wages, reduction in board, and recognition of this union, advising the officials that if these demands were not met. they would call a strike at the mine on Wednesday, February 1, and would shut down the remainder of the plant on Friday February 3.
WILLING TO WORK. "The company was unable to meet their demands, as the property had been operated at a heavy loss for the past two years, and has declared that under no circumstances would it recognize this radical union. As a result, the men have carried out their threats, and at this writing the plant is closed down entirely, with the exception of the heat, light and water system.
"More than half of the employees have not joined the union, and desire to work, but. by reason of widespread intimidation of these loyal workmen and their families, they have been forced to abandon their work, and as a result over one thousand men, who have been regularly employed by the company, are now Idle.
"There have been some clashes between the strikers and the police and at the present time a serious situation exists and the company is unable to operate.
"The plant at Anyox has, at the earnest solicitation of it local officials, operated for over two year for the benefit of its loyal workmen and the company regrets that by the actions of these foreign laborers, influenced by Communist agitators, the works have been closed down."
[AL: Again, company and provincial police hand in hand to crush a strike, and blaming Reds and foreigners for labour strife - and the newspaper publishing straight up propaganda for the company. Not a surprise - it’s a BC tradition (and Canadian tradition.)]

Professional vs. DIY Detailing
While some car owners may attempt to detail their vehicles themselves, professional detailing offers several advantages. Prevent the Inferno of the Future: Fire Restoration Services Decoded
Fires, the silent but monstrous riptide of destruction, often leave us stranded, facing unforeseen turmoil. The ashes may seem to hold the remnants of life deferred, but the potential for renewal lies in them. In the wake of a fire, what follows is not merely the act of restoration but an intricate dance of recovery and reinvention. Surprisingly, this process is not as solitary as we might think. Fire restoration services are a beacon of hope, not just in the clean-up but in preventing future fire hazards. Vancouver homeowners, business proprietors, and property managers heed the call to action as we unravel the secrets of these silent champions.
In the harrowing aftermath of a blaze, the visible wreckage is only the tip of an iceberg. Smoke particles, soot, and the stench of scorching flames seep into the walls, the very fibers of your belongings. They're not just an eyesore; they are the lingering whispers that a fire mark was. A thorough cleanup, far beyond the capabilities of most cleaning procedures, is now imperative. This is the terrain of professionals.
Fire restoration in Vancouver is a specialized field that employs advanced techniques designed to penetrate, extract, and eradicate all smoke particles and odor remnants. Deodorization, ozone treatments, and thermal fogging are just some methods used to address this issue. Engaging in thorough smoke restoration is about understanding the alchemy of smoke—its particles, chemicals, and behavior. Working with a professional is more than convenience; it's a commitment to a purging that mere mortals cannot master.
A house is more than its walls and furniture; it's an extension of those who call it home. When the scars of a fire mar the sanctity of your space, you require more than just cleaning; you need a revival. Thorough cleanup isn't just about removing the soot; it's about resurrecting life in every nook and cranny. Fire restoration services turn the spotlight onto these overlooked cavities and corners, drawing from a reservoir of knowledge and technology to ensure your clean and safe environment.
The problem with fire restoration is that it doesn't end with the last swipe of a cloth or the final deodorizer spray. It only ends when you can rest easy, knowing your property is fortified against potential fire risks. Post-restoration assessments are the grand finale of fire restoration services, a detailed outline of necessary steps and possible upgrades to your property's safety protocols. These assessments are the dotting of the I's and the crossing of the T's on your restoration story.
Prevention is often misjudged as a single act, like a lock on a door or a switch turned off. Fire restoration services echo a different sentiment; prevention is a state of being, a tapestry woven by various efforts and interventions. By their very nature, professional fire restoration companies like Surebuild engrain preventive strategies into your property's very essence, giving you the peace of mind that your past hasn't dictated your future.
The story of fire rehabilitation services is one of transformation. From the ashes of despair, these services bring forth the threads of renewal, not just in the completeness of cleansed spaces but in the structures we call home. Property managers and owners in Vancouver, you are not alone in this narrative. The experts await, ready to pen the chapters of a secure future with you. Don't just restore; prevent, and in doing so, reclaim the sanctity of your space.
If your home has been touched by flames and seek the solace of a professional restoration partner, contact Surebuild Restoration today. Their cleaning solutions aren't just about the here and now; they're the gateway to a safe and secure future.
