Developing Ambient Retail Shelving Displays for Shops
shop fitting companies Due to the fact that storefront square footage is at a premium in this day and age, an increasing number of businesses are selecting to use ambient shelving as a space-saving measure. This is because ambient shelving can be adjusted to accommodate varying levels of available space.
Tumblr media
When referring to display shelving solutions in a retail environment, the term "ambient shelving" is used to refer to any shelving that is located outside of the typical walls-and-aisles layout. This includes any shelving that is located in corners, alcoves, or other non-traditional areas. This includes any shelving that is situated in non-standard locations such as corners, alcoves, or other nooks and crannies. When you think back to the last time you went to a grocery store or a supermarket, you probably walked by a display of produce that was located in the middle of the floor, or you may have noticed a few carefully positioned supermarket equipment here and there that didn't quite match the layout of the aisleways.
These display shelving solutions and supermarket equipment are frequently used for a variety of purposes, the most common of which are to attract the attention of customers, to store items that do not quite fit anywhere else, or possibly even a combination of the two. As a consequence of this, ambient shelving can be an excellent way to attract the attention of customers to any product that you want to emphasise or any item that doesn't quite fit in on the rest of your retail shelving units – provided that you have enough space to accommodate it, of course!
Ideas to Consider When Implementing Ambient Shelving in Shopping Centers and Other Types of Retail Establishments
If you are thinking about adding more ambient shelving to your retail layout, the first thing you need to do is make a plan for what you will stock on those shelves. This will help you determine how much space you will need for each item. If you do not have a plan, you will not be able to determine what should be placed on those shelves.
In general, ambient retail shelving is better suited for displaying either items that you want to call attention to in particular or anything else that does not quite fit on the wall or aisle shelving. For example, if you own a grocery store, you might find that you are better off using ambient shelving for items like fresh produce (bananas, squash, and potatoes) that are more difficult to fit on a standard shelving grid. This is because ambient shelving allows for more space between the shelves. If you have items that are more difficult to store on a standard shelving grid, you might find that it is more beneficial to use ambient shelving rather than standard shelving. This could achieve two goals at once: first, it could organise these items that are difficult to store, and second, it could make those items a little more appealing to customers.
After that, you will need to search the room for a spot that is suitable for the shelves and then locate that spot. This will connect with the decisions that you made in the step before this one – referring back to the example of the produce, you will want to keep them close enough to the rest of the groceries so that they are easy for your customers to find.
On the other hand, one of the most important functions of ambient shelving is to attract the attention of customers to products that may not be seen as frequently or that may be highlighted because they are appropriate for the season that is currently ongoing. This is one of the most important functions of ambient shelving. In the event that you want to make the most of the opportunity, you might want to think about putting them in a more visible location, such as close to the entrance or by the register. This will allow you to draw the attention of additional customers to these products while they are still available, which will allow you to sell more of them while you still have the chance.
Tumblr media
After you have decided where you want to put your shelves and how many of them you want, the next step is to count out how many of each type of display shelving solutions and supermarket market equipment you will need. When putting together ambient retail shelving, gondola island starter shelves are typically utilised for the display of hanging goods, whereas floor-mounted units are utilised for the display of items such as produce. It would be ideal to use a retail shelf that can stand on its own and display products easily on both sides, but this will depend on how much space you have available to work with. You could use any retail shelf that is capable of doing either of these things.

The first Torrid store - Brea Mall - Brea, CA (Opened April 18, 2001)
Designed by JGA, Inc.
From the book: “The retailer, Hot Topic, based in City of Industry, CA, started a short 12 years ago with a concept and a target market; cutting edge apparel, accessories and novelty items--all inspired by alternative music, oriented towards a hip and trendy, teenage market. Hot Topic changed the look of their retail settings, which are usually located in mainstream malls, and the company has recently taken aim at another special market. The new focus is on plus-size teens; an area that the fashion market seems to have neglected.
Up until this time the 15-30 year old hip and trendy young women who wear sizes 14-26 had no other choice but to shop in the larger size women's shops where the fashions were tailored to the more matronly and conservative tastes. That is how Torrid was born!
Torrid was introduced in a new, hot and fun retail setting designed by JGA, Inc. of Southfield, MI which has designed the various prototypes for the Hot Topic stores as well. To be sure of the need for such a niche to be filled, the company opened five Torrid shops almost simultaneously; the first in Brea, CA, followed by stores in malls in Mission Viejo, CA, Annapolis, MD, Omaha, NE, N. Attleboro, MA, and Littleton, CO. The merchandise offerings are clustered as "Streetwear," "Clubwear," Rockabilly Wear," and Renaissance Wear" and the stores average about 2,750 SF. Besides the "everyday" slacks and novelty T-shirts, these larger size young women can find black vinyl pants and mini-skirts, black corsets, dog-collar chokers and platform shoes as well as retro-inspired clothing and accessories. In addition to the gothic and prom dresses, Torrid also carries a full line of lingerie for this particular market. Listening to the target market, Hot Topic's Torrid offers teenagers and up the opportunity to look "girly yet fierce."
The design objective for the prototype store that was designed by JGA, Inc. was to create "a celebration of abundance" and make the setting as unique, unconventional and spirited as the plus-size young women who will be shopping here. Inspired by a "mythological, after-hours club in New Orleans," the atmosphere is romantic, dark and filled with a sense of "unbridled passion." "From the signature flaming heart icon to the curving voluptuous lines throughout the store, excessive materials and scale mirror the zest of the Torrid woman." It starts out front with the shopper-stopping facade which serves as a dramatic gateway to the store.
The curvaceous and sensuous "hourglass" figures of the Torrid customer is expressed in the hand-crafted metalwork and the backlit translucent glass glowing red. A "drippy" red chandelier and the hand blown flaming heart torcheres add to the store's distinctive sense of place and being. The mosaic porcelain tile floor sets the color palette of jewel tones and metallics. "Visually complex, layers of finishes and architectural pieces evoke a one-of-a-kind artistic flavor." The eclectic mix of fixtures, furniture and furnishings-even the armoires--add to the New Orleans flavor. The hand painted, whimsical and overscaled armoires or cabinets are used to anchor the various zones within the store and at the center of the space a large bronze metallic drape further divides the departments.
The designers added special touches to each area to create that unique, one-of-a-kind feeling to the design. Specially designed, oversized red sculptured chairs with slatted backs are featured in the shoe area. Shoes and accessories are displayed on the slatted backs. The lingerie area takes on a more intimate and exotic--almost Moroccan--feeling with the hand blown glass chandeliers suspended down from large plaster domes. Seen behind this area--beyond a hand painted wall and arc--are the individual, oversized dressing rooms which are equipped with flattering uplights and decorative chandeliers that are visible from other parts of the store. The cash wrap becomes a "focal fantasy" in the total design and it resembles a giant canopy bed topped with twisting shapes and forms.
The space is filled with a pulsating excitement that is so appropriate for the merchandise and the young clientele. In addition to the shimmering palette of rich, deep colors, the warm colored downlights not only enrich the ambient colors and textures but they enhance the merchandise display. The traditional long and narrow mall space is broken up into more personal and individual zones by the variations in ceiling heights, the tin ceilings, finials and the assorted wall coverings. The use of brocades, metallics, and jewel tones on the walls also help to differentiate areas in the store. The metal fixture system--tortoise shell like in appearance--was customized to accommodate the products unique size and length requirements.
If all goes as well as anticipated we can expect to see more and more Torrid shops opening up across the USA- maybe even as many as 700 outlets!”

Earning Your Keep
Analogical (Virgil & Logan)
This story will be a series for the sugar daddy idea i've had running around in my head for some time now lmao. I really hope you guys like it since I enjoy writing it :)
Read it on AO3!
Virgil likes to take care of those he holds close, and maybe also a stranger that offered him a ride home.
Virgil was never rich. His family was big and his parents couldn’t make very many ends meet for most of his life, leading him to work his way through school. Once he graduated with a bachelors in psychology, he picked up two jobs to start paying off his loans, one in retail which drove his mental health into the ground, and the other as a behavioral health tech at a rehab center, which only had night-shift positions open and kept him up all night. He was paid and treated like shit, and on the cusp of breaking down when he got extremely lucky. For his 27th birthday he got the usual card with a cheesy message from his grandparents, but instead of the typical twenty bucks or a gift card, he found a lottery ticket sitting neatly inside. He didn’t think much of it, handing it over to the convenience store clerk when he was picking up an energy drink before his next shift.
“I don’t think this is worth anything, but if it has anything on it can I just use it to pay for this?” Virgil put his drink on the counter while the clerk scanned the ticket.
“Woah, woah. Oh my god.”
“What?”
“Dude, you just won.”
“Huh?” Virgil knit his brow in confusion. He glanced over at the cashier’s screen, noticing the rather large number it displayed.
“Yeah, you won the jackpot! It’s over like 200 million! Holy shit! Here, sign it and take it to a lawyer!” The person handed him back the slip of paper and a pen. Virgil’s brain had short-circuited, causing him to just follow instructions. He didn’t really understand what was happening, so he just took the ticket back and walked out and back to his car, driving straight home and immediately typing ‘what to do if you win the lottery’ into his computer.
A bunch of results came up saying a bunch of stuff- tax experts, lawyers, and a bunch of steps that caused Virgil to lay down on his bed and rock back and forth for a little while. He didn’t believe this was happening to him. Maybe it wasn’t real? This was just a nightmare right? A really good bad nightmare.
All the things he saw online said not to tell anyone, but he couldn’t just sit there not making a decision. He picked up the phone and dialed the only person he knew who could possibly help him out.
~~~~~~~~~~
“You what ?” Janus’ voice hissed through the speakers on Virgil's phone, “Is this some weird joke, because it isn’t landing well.”
“No, no, I promise it's real, I-I checked and the numbers match up and I verified it at the gas station and, and-”
“Virgil, breathe. Calm down. I’m coming over so we can talk. I’ll help you get this figured out, and make sure you aren’t having delusions of grandeur.” Janus sighed, “I’ll be there in 10.”
Janus was over shortly, Virgil working with him to figure out the next course of action. Everything was going so fast. The next day Janus helped him set up meetings and accounts, and get lawyers and a budget going. The week flew by in between the contracts and calls. Even the next few months seemed to go by in a blur of bureaucratic processes.
The first thing he did was set his parents up with a decent place to live and help them with their debts and medical bills. He did the same for himself, getting his student loans paid off finally and allowing himself to move into a spacey yet cozy penthouse. He quit both his jobs, but tried to end on a good note with his boss at the clinic in case he did ever want to go back. He was, probably for the first time in his life, comfortable.
~~~~~~~~~~
Time kept passing and Virgil had to now figure out what he wanted to spend his time on. He’d picked up his passion for music again now that he could afford nice equipment, but never had the intent to go anywhere with it. He looked into some online classes he could take, just for fun and to keep his mind stimulated. He even worked with Janus and some of his lawyers to start a charity for helping disabled students with loans that didn’t have the luck that he had. That was as close to a job as he had, once they had an office set up he made a regular schedule to help sort things out with it.
The routine he made helped him adjust to his new life. Getting up, going to the office, processing applications, working on his classes and playing music. He didn’t really spend his money anymore beyond his needs. Nothing fancy brought him much happiness. He didn’t host parties or have many friends that hung out with him before he became well off. He’d tried to go on a few dates, but the people he’d seen either knew him from the news when he originally won or they’d act disinterested until he brought up his money. The one time he actually thought he’d found someone he was interested in, the guy had thrown a fit that he wanted to end their 3rd date early to not have a panic attack.
They went to a planetarium, which for the most part Virgil enjoyed, but the segment about how small of a spec the earth was in the grand scheme of the universe triggered the existentialist anxiety of dying alone and not mattering. He had to run out and go calm down, but that proved difficult with his date shouting.
“Do you know how fucking rude it is to just run out on your date? I had to pay for these tickets, you know, and they aren’t cheap!”
“I-I know, i’m sorry, I can, um, here I’ll pay you back-” Virgil started to reach for his wallet.
“Whatever, it’s fine, let’s just see if they’ll let us back in, cmon.” The guy tugged at Virgil’s arm.
“Um…Actually I was wondering if…s-sorry uh, could- could we just go home?”
“What, are you not having a nice night? You could at least not waste my time, you know.”
“I know, I'm really sorry, we should- maybe, uh… you can go and I’ll just head home and call an uber-”
“Ugh are you serious?” His date frowned, “You know what? Just go, I don’t wanna deal with this anymore. Don’t call me again, we’re done.”
He watched his date head back into the planetarium and sighed, resigning himself to a bench outside to shake off the rejection. He shivered as a spike of anxiety hit him. He had to count his breaths, but it wasn’t working. He was gonna end up alone and live a completely inconsequential life that had no impact whatsoever and-
“Are you alright?”
Virgil looked over at a man a few feet away from him. He stood tall, sporting glasses and a polo with the logo of the planetarium. Virgil didn’t couldn’t quite make out the name on the man’s name tag through his watery eyes. Oh shit, was he crying? No no no this couldn’t happen in public, he was a grown man crying in public-
“Oh, apologies, I didn’t mean to startle you. I just thought I should intervene.” The man looked at Virgil with concern, “May I sit?”
Virgil nodded, easing slightly as he did. He took a shaky breath and wiped away his tears, “I-I’m so-sor-ry. I could-n’t stay in there. S-sorry.”
“There’s no need to apologize, take as much time as you need to gather yourself.” He spoke calmly. His tone comforted Virgil enough to steady his breathing and collect his thoughts.
“I’m…I’m good. Sorry.” Virgil sighed, “Just had a shitty date.”
The man frowned, “I see. Was he your ride home?”
Virgil nodded, “Figured I’d just get a cab or something.”
“Don’t waste your money, my shift just ended. If you’re comfortable with it I’d be happy to offer you a way home.”
“No no I can’t, I mean- It’s fine it’s not like money’s the issue I just don’t wanna leave him here alone.”
“After he just left you?”
Virgil looked towards the doors of the planetarium. He slumped his shoulders in resignation, “I guess you’re right.”
“I don’t mean to intrude on your personal affairs, but he is not worth your time if he does not respect your boundaries, and I don’t feel comfortable leaving you in a potentially unsafe environment. I would feel much more assured if I knew you returned home unharmed.”
“Fuck it, ok.” Virgil sighed. He looked over at the man and was able to see him a little more clearly. His name tag attached to a Dr. Who lanyard read Logan in bold font. He looked rather lanky and had bags under his eyes comparable to Virgil’s own.
“Would you like another minute to calm down or would you like to walk with me to my car now? I don’t mind waiting.”
“Uh, no, we can go now. Th-thank you, um, Logan.” Virgil offered a half smile.
“Of course, uh…”
“Virgil.”
“Virgil.” The man- Logan, stood up and motioned for the other to follow him.
Virgil stood and accompanied him to the car. It wasn’t the fanciest thing in the world, far from it. It looked like one of the windows had been punched out and was covered with cardboard and duct tape. It looked like an older car, and when they got in Logan had to start the engine a few times before it actually got running.
“Please excuse the state of my car,” Logan said pulling his seatbelt on, “I’d fix the window on my own if I could but I’ve been too busy to do so. Here, do you mind putting your address in so I can get directions?”
Logan handed Virgil his phone, the other quickly inputting the info and handing it back. Virgil fastened his own seatbelt as they drove out of the parking lot.
“So, you work at the planetarium?”
“My shirt indicates so.”
“Right.” Virgil nodded, “What started that?”
“I needed a part-time job to work during nights while I attended college. I studied astronomy and a professor recommended applying for the position. The job just stuck after I graduated.”
“That sounds pretty cool. You get to go to all those shows, right?”
“No, I get to sit in the ticket booth.”
“Oh.” Virgil looked out the window as they drove, “I didn’t realize.”
“It's alright,” Logan said, shrugging, “I’ve seen them all anyway, when I had more free time.”
“You can’t take a day off?”
Logan’s lips pursed, “Not really. I work two other jobs.”
They both spent the rest of the ride in silence until the car approached the area where Virgil lived.
“You…live over here?” Logan questioned, looking around at the tall, well-kept buildings of the city.
“Um, yeah. I guess.” Virgil sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck, “I moved here a few months ago. Doesn’t feel like it though.”
Logan hummed in acknowledgement, still looking around at how different this place seemed compared to where he lived. He pulled up to a decorative building with too many stories to count from his view. He parked the car and turned to Virgil.
“Thank you for allowing me to take you home. I’m sorry you had a rough night but hopefully you’ll find someone else that will accommodate your needs appropriately.” Logan offered a smile.
Virgil returned it, before clumsily reaching to take off his seatbelt and pull out his wallet, “Uh, here.”
He offered a wad of cash to Logan, who in return pushed it back, “No, please don’t worry about covering gas. It isn’t far from my-”
“Take it. Get your window fixed too. And if you need anything else just, um, give me a call or something. Thanks again, Logan.” Virgil said, getting out of the car and shutting the door.
Logan watched him greet the doorman (his building had a doorman?) and head to his apartment, before staring down at the cash. It added up to about $350, plus Virgil's business card. He blinked and debated trying to go after him, but decided he wouldn’t be able to find him since he didn’t know which apartment was his. He pulled out his own wallet and stuffed the cash inside. The card Virgil had given him had his name and number, along with the name of a charity Logan heard the name of a few times from the news. This was too much to process, so Logan just put the card in with the cash and drove home. That was a problem for someone much more well rested.
~~~~~~~~~~
Virgil flopped down on his bed as soon as he got home. He pulled out his phone and immediately blocked his date’s number, writing him off as just another insensitive asshole trying to take advantage of him. He let his mind relax in the safety of his home and tried to just forget about tonight. Except Logan. He couldn’t get him out of his mind.
Working two jobs had Virgil on the verge of a panic attack almost every night, he couldn’t imagine working three like Logan had. And how long had he been driving that car? Wasn’t it dangerous to drive when your engine doesn’t turn over and you don’t have a window? Those bags under his eyes, was he not sleeping well? Was the money he gave him enough to cover everything?
Virgil exhaled through his nose and flipped onto his back. These were morning problems. Or at least wake up at 3 am and worry about life problems. He glanced at his clock- 10:30. Definitely something to deal with tomorrow.
Meet Fujifilm's New X100VI Digital Camera
Tumblr media
While some might argue that a majority of consumer-grade photography nowadays is now mostly achieved through the use of smartphones, it goes without saying that there's still a sizeable population of enthusiasts and professionals who'd still rather get their photography done via a dedicated camera. This has resulted in some rather impressive hardware from the biggest names in the industry, including Fujifilm. With that in mind, the company recently unveiled the launch of the Fujifilm X100VI digital camera, which boasts some pretty cool features. The camera is the latest addition in Fujifilm’s X Series line of digital cameras, and Fujifilm says that the new model offers exceptional image quality, in addition to its compact size and lightweight profile, as well as Fujifilm’s colour reproduction quality.  Camera Design and Features Fujifilm says that the top and bottom of the X100VI's body is built from aluminium which is pressed and machined for sharp edges, while the surface is finely blasted for a smooth texture in addition to the anodised aluminium on its surface. The camera also features an LCD monitor for media viewing and playback which can be stored in a fully flat position, and also comes with touch support. Additionally, the control buttons on the back have been moved to a position that is easy to operate with the right hand. As the sixth-generation model in the X100 Series, the X100VI comes with the new 40.2 megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, as well as a high-speed X-Processor 5 image processing engine. The camera also includes a newly-developed in-body image stabilisation function, with up to 6.0 stops. Fujifilm says that this is the first time that this feature has been incorporated in an X100 Series product, without a considerable increase in size and weight. Going back to the camera's hardware, the 40-megapixel CMOS 5 HR sensor inside is designed to allow more light to be captured in comparison to its predecessors, as well as native ISO 125 support. The X100VI also comes with a total of 20 "Film Simulation" modes, including a new ‘REALA ACE’ mode with a wide range of different tones. The camera also incorporates an autofocus prediction algorithm for reliable focusing that works even on moving subjects, with subject detection autofocus to accurately track a range of subjects. Fujifilm says that its developed using deep-learning AI technology, allowing it to detect wildlife, vehicles, and more. Other Details The X100VI also includes an ‘Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder’ that lets users switch between the optical viewfinder (OVF) and the electronic viewfinder (EVF). The latter is equipped with a high-resolution OLED panel with around 3.69 million dots for a clear visual user experience. The camera comes with a built-in ‘Electronic Range Finder’ (ERF) function allows a small EVF to be simultaneously displayed on the OVF, which can allow photographers to capture a subject in the OVF and subsequently magnify the in-focus area in the smaller EVF, making it convenient for snapshots and such. For video recording, there's built-in support for 6.2K resolution 30P movie recording that also supports tracking AF function during recording. One of the X100VI's most handy features comes in the form of Frame.io Camera to Cloud support, allowing users to wirelessly connect to an active internet connection, authenticate to Frame.io, and automatically upload photos and videos online right after creation, speeding up a user's workflow process. Pricing and Availability The X100VI will be sold in Black and Silver models, and will be available in the UK from 28 February 2024 from authorised retailers and the Fujifilm House of Photography in London starting at £1,599 including VAT. There will also be a special edition of the camera to celebrate Fujifilm’s 90th anniversary year, which will be available starting on 6th April at £1,934. The limited-edition models are individually numbered and delivered in a special box with strap, soft release button and history cards. The camera body is engraved with the original Fujifilm corporate brand logo from 1934, along with the unique serial number. Read the full article
world biggest building Burj Khalifa history
The Burj Khalifa, standing tall in the heart of Dubai, is a marvel of modern engineering and architectural ingenuity. As the tallest building in the world, its awe-inspiring height and distinctive design have made it an iconic symbol of the city and a testament to human achievement.
Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 and was completed in 2010, taking approximately six years to finish. The ambitious project was led by the South Korean company Samsung C&T, with the renowned architect Adrian Smith from the American architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill overseeing the design. The vision for the Burj Khalifa was to create a mixed-use structure that would not only serve as a residential space but also house offices, retail outlets, and a luxurious hotel.
One of the most remarkable features of the Burj Khalifa is its staggering height, reaching an impressive 828 meters (2,717 feet). To put this into perspective, the building stands more than twice as tall as the Empire State Building in New York City. The skyscraper boasts 163 floors, with the majority of them dedicated to residential units, while the lower levels accommodate commercial spaces, a hotel, and observation decks.
To support the immense height and counteract the forces of wind and seismic activity, the Burj Khalifa is reinforced with a combination of concrete and high-strength steel. The exterior of the building is clad in reflective glass, providing both aesthetic appeal and functionality. The Y-shaped structure not only adds a distinctive look to the building but also enhances its stability by reducing wind-induced vibrations.
The construction of the Burj Khalifa was a complex engineering feat that required innovative solutions. The foundation of the building, known as the "mat," is a massive reinforced concrete slab that spreads across an area of about 8,000 square meters. This foundation is essential for distributing the immense load of the building and preventing settling.
The tower's construction utilized advanced technologies, including a high-performance concrete mix and a jump-form system that allowed for the continuous pouring of concrete during the building process. The construction team faced numerous challenges, such as pumping concrete to record heights and dealing with the extreme temperatures of the desert environment.
The Burj Khalifa's observation decks, located on the 148th and 125th floors, offer breathtaking panoramic views of Dubai and beyond. The tower's spire, which crowns its pinnacle, is not only a structural element but also serves as a functional component, housing communication equipment and lighting elements that contribute to the building's stunning nighttime display.
Beyond its structural achievements, the Burj Khalifa is a symbol of Dubai's rapid urban development and economic growth. It has become a global landmark, attracting millions of visitors who marvel at its sheer height and elegant design. The tower's completion marked a significant milestone in the field of architecture and engineering, showcasing the capabilities of human innovation and determination on a grand scale. The Burj Khalifa continues to stand as a testament to what can be achieved when vision, technology, and skilled craftsmanship converge in the pursuit of architectural excellence.
Revamp Your Workspace: Unveiling the Ultimate Inventory Shelving Systems
In today's competitive retail industry, supermarkets constantly strive to attract customers and optimize their operations. One crucial aspect of achieving these goals is the effective utilization of supermarket equipment and shop display equipment. These tools not only enhance the overall shopping experience for customers but also contribute to the efficiency and profitability of the supermarket. This article explores the significance of supermarket equipment and shop display equipment in creating an engaging and organized shopping environment.
The term supermarket equipment refers to a diverse collection of implements and machines that are put to use in the numerous departments that make up a supermarket. These departments include refrigeration, storage, shelving, checkout counters, and more. The procedures can be streamlined with the help of these pieces of equipment, space can be utilised to its fullest potential, and product quality and freshness are maintained. For example, refrigeration systems are an essential component in the process of prolonging the shelf life of perishable goods like dairy products, meats, and vegetables. These systems assist supermarkets in reducing the amount of food that is thrown away and ensuring that customers have access to food that is both fresh and wholesome by maintaining the ideal temperature and humidity levels.
Storage options are another essential component of grocery store fixtures and furnishings. Supermarkets are able to effectively organise their inventory thanks to storage systems that are both efficient and effective, such as industrial racks and shelving units. Supermarkets are able to improve their stock management, cut the amount of time it takes to restock shelves, and reduce the number of errors made by customers by classifying products and maximising the use of available space. Customers are able to easily navigate through aisles and locate products without any confusion thanks to efficient storage systems, which also contribute to an aesthetically pleasing shop layout.
Tumblr media
When it comes to shop display equipment, supermarkets rely on a variety of tools to showcase their products in an appealing manner. These tools include shop display counters, shop display shelves, and shop display hooks. The ability of supermarkets to display products at eye level, which draws customers' attention and encourages them to make impulsive purchases, is made possible by shelving units with adjustable heights and angles. These display units are able to be modified to meet the requirements of a wide variety of product categories, including those pertaining to baked goods, canned goods, and personal care products, among others. Supermarkets are able to effectively highlight promotional offers and new arrivals when products are presented in a manner that is both organised and visually appealing. This results in increased sales and increased customer satisfaction.
In addition to shelving units, supermarkets make use of a variety of specialised display equipment such as beverage coolers, refrigerated display cases, and hot food displays. These pieces of equipment not only maintain products at the appropriate temperature but also give customers an unobstructed view of the various choices that are available to them. For instance, a refrigerated display case that is well-lit and organised in the appropriate manner can entice customers to investigate a wide variety of chilled products, such as beverages, pre-packaged meals, and desserts. These alluring displays have the potential to increase sales and leave customers with a favourable impression of the product's freshness and overall quality.
Another essential zone in a grocery store, the checkout counter is where the right equipment can make a significant difference in terms of productivity and overall customer satisfaction. To hasten the process of making payments and cut down on the amount of time spent waiting in line, many contemporary supermarkets have implemented cutting-edge point-of-sale (POS) systems and self-checkout machines. These systems simplify transactions, automate price calculations, and provide accurate data for managing inventory all at the same time. In addition, the utilisation of barcode scanners and cash management solutions assists supermarkets in cutting down on the number of mistakes made, reducing the risk of theft, and facilitating a streamlined checkout process for customers.
It is essential to perform routine maintenance and upgrades on the equipment used in grocery stores and retail shops in order to ensure that it continues to function properly and lasts as long as possible. Regular inspections should be scheduled at supermarkets so that any problems can be found and resolved as soon as possible. Not only can the functionality of older machines be improved by replacing them with newer models that are more energy-efficient, but in the long run, this can also cut down on the costs of operation. Supermarkets can minimise the amount of downtime they experience by making investments in equipment that is dependable and long-lasting. This provides their customers with a seamless shopping experience.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the equipment found in supermarket equipment as well as display equipment play an essential part in the creation of an inviting and effective environment for shopping. These pieces of equipment contribute to the overall success of a supermarket in a variety of ways, from the refrigeration and storage solutions to the aesthetically pleasing shelving units and specialised displays. Supermarkets can increase their sales, improve their customers' satisfaction, and maintain a lead in today's competitive retail landscape if they improve the way their products are presented, streamline their operations, and enhance the customer experience.
Being a woman in STEM – adrianalobosco
Tumblr media
Science has always been my passion and it has been an aspiration of mine to have a career in the industry. My first dream job was to be a vet – this was quickly vetoed after my sister told me where my hands would end up! After I finished my A Levels, I spent some time working in retail as a visual merchandiser. This mainly involved squeezing myself into tiny gaps to change window displays and almost being flattened every time I tried to change a mannequin. After I realised retail wasn’t for me, I spent some time working in the food industry helping to develop new food-to-go products. After realising, again, that this wasn’t something I wanted to do long term, I left in search of a science-based role.
University was something that didn’t really appeal to me. Looking back, if I had made the decision to go to university, I would certainly have more friends! But you know what they say, quality over quantity….. unfortunately either one applies!
I am currently working as an apprentice Bioengineering and Chemistry technician. My role is very varied, and every day is different. I am constantly learning new things and putting them into practice, and I am excited to complete my apprenticeship at the end of the year and grow within the world of science. Apprenticeships have always appealed to me because I like the hybrid approach of learning and working. Before I came across this apprenticeship, I didn’t think it was possible for me to access a role like this without a degree.
I have learnt a great deal so far including learning how to use and carry out maintenance on different equipment, giving training to post-graduate students and staff and helping in the teaching labs supporting undergraduate students. Some days are very reactive, and I have to deal with equipment malfunctions and things going wrong in the lab. Fortunately this doesn’t happen often, although I must admit I like the change of pace - just don’t tell my manager!
When I am not engrossed in the world of science, I spend my time following my cat around the house (I wish that was a metaphor) and travelling to different worlds via the pages of a good book. I am also a huge foodie, and as a newcomer to London I am always out and about discovering new food spots.
I have always had great admiration for women in STEM careers and now I am in that position myself. As a young woman I am honoured to be able to fly the flag and hopefully inspire other young women to pursue a career in science and engineering.
I have just over six months left of apprenticeship, and I am loving every second of it. I feel like my love for my job comes across and I have received some excellent feedback so far. My hard work and appetite for learning has resulted in me being nominated for the Papin Prizes, an award that recognises the invaluable role of technicians across the country. I must admit it was an incredibly proud moment.
As the wise philosopher Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”.
I'm sure it bodes well that I did most of this today
Tumblr media
Transcript below:
9. You Are Here:
- an odd-shaped room. An early-model interactive hologram dyes the space sonic blue
- the hologram is a scaled miniature of the whole retail sector
- 2d4 re-programmed cleaning drones glint beneath the map with hostility
10. Concourse, South:
- the main thoroughfare stretches out of sight, the pattern of benches, synthetic plants, and decorative light fixtures repeating as nauseum
- a couple of broken lights buzz and flicker. It is otherwise still. Scrape marks on the floor lead between shopfronts and back to the elevators (9)
11: Parfumerie :
- faux marble and superfluous pillars wrapped in plastic vines
- motion detectors spray rancid perfume at passers by, it is highly acidic and capable of blinding if not avoided
- several drives holding the shop's last weekly takings hide beneath the counter
12. Smart Implants:
- the clean white interior flowers beneath red emergency lights, minimalist posters of entirely too happy customers smiling in crimson
- no working models are kept on shelves, but insertion equipment can be found
13. Formal Wear:
- sample gowns, suits, and other kinds on formal wear are displayed on sparse racks in the front, some missing, some destroyed
- most of the back of the store is fitting rooms
- entering a fitting room starts the automated measuring bot. Roll 1d6, on 6 the bot is murderously defective
14. Holo-Accessories:
- sells small wearable bands that project images of stars orbiting, flowers encircling, etc.
- a few intact bands remain on shelves
15. Gift Shop:
- the eyeless faces of grinning station celebrities leer from the walls
- S23 is emblazoned onto countless drinking vessels
- no visible signs of looting
Continuing with the retail sector for at least the rest of the month, I think, as it's pretty fun and kind of making me wish I'd just committed to a shopping-centre-as-dungeon for d23 instead haha.
I love all the frontfacing stuff and I think it's things I would be pretty good with, like helping customers, organizing events, cooperating with other organizations and desinging pretty displays. But I wonder if I'm getting a totally wrong idea of what it means to be a librarian in a public library. So, only if you don't mind talking about work in your time off, what are things you do that the customers don't see? What should someone know about it before going down this career path?
Gooood morning! I'd be happy to talk about it. Some caveats are that every library is different and I've worked mainly worked at one for most of my career, but I do talk to other librarians a great deal through various online groups. My experience is mainly suburban, rural and urban libraries sometimes have vastly different setups. Also I work in the adult section, but I do have a good relationship with the children's librarians (highly recommend this, they are almost to a one, very kind and interesting people and also are great at re-using things for crafts etc. You will get great ideas from them.)
I am going to talk about front-facing for a bit just because I actually think it's the thing people overlook the most when thinking about going into libraries. The most amazing thing about public libraries is that it's one of the few places anyone can walk into and not be asked to buy anything. It's a great feeling to work somewhere like that and you will help a lot of people! Most days I walk out with a good warm feeling, have talk to lots of interesting and thoughtful people!
What follows is not to dissuade you, it's just the part that a library school professor probably won't discuss.
You will also be dealing with things that you are not equipped to help with or find overwhelming. Even at a relatively quiet library, I have been screamed out for any number of perceived wrongs, tried to help someone who is in the middle of a severe mental health episode, and dealt with complaints from other patrons about odors or mannerisms that the other person simply can't help.
I've had people looking at pornography on a public screen just to provoke a reaction. Sometimes people will try to flirt with you or try to make you uncomfortable in that manner.
I worked in retail before libraries and it can be very similar in this way, except in retail the interactions have natural limits. In libraries, sometimes someone difficult to work with will be there all day every day just skirting the line of what's acceptable.
This is a very small minority of the interactions that I've had, but they stick with you. You will sometimes feel very helpless when you see someone suffering. You will sometimes be scared at the level of anger someone can bring to a banal interaction.
The back end of library work that people might not see? There's politics! You might have a board that you answer to or a town council and people are concerned about how their taxes are being spent. Sometimes they don't value the library very much at all and you will spend time fighting for scraps of budget.
On a day to day basis, your job will really depend on how many other librarians work with you. The smaller the staff, the more hats you wear. At a very large library, your sole job might be to work the desk and maybe do some collection development. The smaller it gets, you might be running book clubs and programs, doing IT, social media, dealing with database vendors, maybe cataloging. If you're small enough (my first job I was the only employee!), you might be doing the shelving and circulation duties too. You might do desk schedules, manage people, or sometimes fix things if there's no one else around to do it.
You will likely not get paid very much. A library degree is the third worst paid master's degree in the US (other two are teaching and social work). Before you seriously consider library school, please look at the job listings in your area. It's not unusual for the director of a small library to be making the same salary as a starting teacher in the same area. You will almost definitely have to work at least one or two nights a week and probably weekends here and there. Libraries are open for the public's convenience which means weekends and after work.
Circulation of physical items has dropped year over year for the last twenty years. The job is less about books every day. It's about being a community center, an internet cafe, and a safe (hopefully) place to stay during the day.
I know that's really broad, so let me know if you want me to zoom in on anything specific.
