Continuing prep work. Tonight we’ve cut most of the plastic pieces off of their sprues and trimmed off the excess. I mostly like this kind of work. I mean it’s not exciting, but you can put on a podcast or a vtuber or ten hours chillwave/retrofunk/horrorcore stream and turn off your brain while you cut. It’s a good monotony after the bad monotony of work. Like I was never going to write tonight because my brain is mush after my shift, but I have just enough ability to handle sharp objects! Just don’t turn your brain off too much cuz yeah, sharp as fuck razor blade.

It also gives you a chance to really familiarize yourself with the pieces your working with.

Like I’m going to spend a lot of time fill gaps in this saucer. Look at that. You could drive a whole SUV through that gap between the saucer and the impulse engine.

Seriously do be careful trimming these. Always cut away from you!

The entire engineering hull is warped as fuck. Gonna need to clamp it down when we’re gluing it together.

Trimming also gives you the opportunity to create whole new problems for yourself! I bit a chunk of plastic out of this nacelle and will have to fill it in with putty later.

Still looks like a pile of crap, but we’re getting there. We’ll leave the clear parts on their sprues since it will be a while before we get to those plus they’re easy to lose.

You know those movies about the underdog, hard luck kids who may not have a lot of money but they’ve got lots of heart and grit and can-do attitude? And to save the school or the empty lot where they have their club or orphanage or whatever, they have to challenge the rich kids to a race? And the rich kids do something like “okay, poors, you have to beat us at a regatta, something you have never done whilst we have multiple trophies” and so the good kids have to cobble together a boat out of scrap and the rich evil kids just borrow their uncle’s championship yacht?

That’s what the Excelsior is. It’s the rich evil kids’ uncle’s yacht and the Enterprise is the plucky underdog. Like it’s specifically that narrative in Star Trek III and when Scotty reveals he sabotaged the Excelsior it’s a heroic moment. So obviously I really want to get the paint job right cuz no evil rich kid would accept anything less and I’ve noticed some things that I have to really think about if I want to get things right. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
