TARGARYEN WEEK 2023: DAY SIX —  FAVOURITE FAMILY DYNAMIC

After dissolving his marriage with his sister-wife, Daena Targaryen, King Baelor the Blessed confined Daena and her younger sisters, Rhaena and Elaena, into their own "Court of Beauty" to avoid them tempting him with carnal thoughts.

The sisters were comfortably confined in what has become known as the Maidenvault.

so I've been compiling a list of all the Targaryens whose cause of death we know, and almost all of those missing from the list are women: Septa Rhaella, Daena the Defiant and her sisters, Daenora and her son Maegor, Vaella, Aegon V's sisters Daella and Rhae, Dany's grandmother Shaera and her sister Rhaelle. do you have any theories or worries about how these women may be revealed to have died in F&B 2?

What, me worry about GRRM falling back on death in childbirth in order to get rid of female characters? What, me worry about GRRM showing less interest in female characters compared to their male counterparts? Who could ever have gotten that idea?

(Also I’m assuming you’re only talking about female Targaryens by birth who died post-Fire and Blood Volume 1, because we also don’t know exactly how Visenya died, or Rhaena daughter of Aenys I, or Jaehaerys and Alysanne’s daughter Saera, or if we’re being really technical Aenys’ youngest daughter, Vaella - and that’s not even counting Jaehaerys and Alysanne’s maternal half-sister and later daughter-in-law Jocelyn Baratheon.)

Anyway, yes, I am definitely concerned. My current position is that until and unless we have information guaranteeing that any given female Targaryen did not die in childbirth, I’m mentally preparing myself for news that they died in childbirth. Aegon III’s sisters Baela and/or Rhaena? May have died in childbirth. (I don’t like to think of the implications of killing the former like that in the context of her possibly declining marriage to Alyn and his relationship with Elaena.) Daenora? May have died in childbirth. (Unless she is more like The Accursed Kings’ Clemence of Hungary as the wife of the partial-Louis X-like Aerion Brightflame - I’ll have to think about that in another post.) Maekar’s daughters Daella and/or Rhae? May have died in childbirth. (Although hopefully the former’s possible romance with Dunk will save her.) Egg’s daughter Rhaelle? May have died in childbirth.

And even if childbirth isn’t involved, that doesn’t mean we’ll necessarily get any information on what ultimately happened to these ladies. Given how little GRRM apparently wished to have Dowager Queen Alyssa, crown princess Jocelyn Baratheon, or Princess Alyssa involved in the lives of their royal children, I don’t have a lot of confidence in, say, Queen Shaera lasting long after the accession of Jaehaerys II. Given how little GRRM detailed the lives or ultimate fates of the princess (and would-be heiress)-turned-septa Rhaella and the mentally disabled Princess Gael, I’m not at all confident that GRRM will spend much time on the fate of the princess-turned-septa Rhaena or the mentally disabled would-be heiress Vaella. The lack of any mention of Daena in TWOIAF, especially in connection with her son’s eventual rebellion (remember that she would only have been 51 at the time of the First Blackfyre Rebellion), doesn’t give me a lot of confidence in her surviving long past the birth of Daemon.

(Still hoping that Princess Elaena lives to be 70 and not only gets to be GRRM’s favorite sort of character - the sassy, confident, smart older woman/widow - but specifically sticks up for Egg’s secret marriage for love with Betha Blackwood, using both her own history of marrying for love and her seniority within the royal family. Give me one nice thing, GRRM!)

But hey, GRRM is a great writer! I would love Fire and Blood Volume 2 to tell us a lot more about all of these ladies, and I’m willing to trust that the author has the talent to do just that.

jace would NEVER abandon his family to back aegon’s claim (‘wah wah wah he HATES his mother bc she *made* him a bastard-’ one, jace does not care enough about that to abandon his mother [to whom he is literally the miniature version of] and two, his entire personality is his love for his family. he literally dies trying to save aegon and viserys *after* his mom told him not to go fuck OFF).

rhaena would also *never* abandon her family to back aegon’s claim (apparently she’ll feel sorry about blood & cheese and want to make amends with them. i don’t think so, i think she’d be more upset that her betrothed was ruthlessly slaughtered despite his status as a peace envoy but whatever).

baela is one of rhaenyra’s staunchest supporters (‘the greens reach to usurp our queen’s throne and they must be answer with fire and blood.’ i DO NOT care that it didn’t make it into the show that is canon!baela) and does *not* want driftmark (which only corlys has a say in, and he chose bAsTaRdS over her and rhaena at every single turn don’t even mention it), so stop trying to conflate your hatred of rhaenyra onto her daughter.

aegon iii would never have been happy married to jaehaera and vice versa. these were two heavily traumatized children. jaehaera would have to deal with being married to the son of the man who had her brother executed (not to mention that she already had severe physical and mental health issues that were not being treated and the people around her [aegon ii before he died and alicent after] were actively making her life worse). aegon would have to deal with being married to the daughter of the man who had his dragon burn and eat his mother alive while he watched. which he never ended up letting go of (even with a wife who we know he obviously loved dearly) he wore black for the rest of his life and was stated to be the most solemn king due to what he experienced during the dance. there was no saving them.

Are you more "let's get crazy let's grab every opportunity follow our hearts we're 150 years young 🤪" (Aegon Daeron Daena) or are you "welp we've lost everything we based our personality on time to rebuild our sense of self entirely around whichever higher power makes us feel superior to the dirty youngins 🙏" (Rhaena Baelor Naerys Aemon)

What do you think we would`ve seen in canon had Rhaena/Aemond or Baela/Aemond been canon?

For Rhaena and Aemond probably a Romeo and Juliet situation. Tragic and doomed from the start if everything else stays the same during the Dance besides Rhaemond falling in love with each other.

I could see Aemond and Rhaena meeting and forming a secret attachment during her visit to the capital. When Rhaena travels to Vale after the Dance breaks out, en route Aemond swoops in and kidnaps Rhaena(I don’t think she’d willingly leave her family, but I don’t think she’d leave him once she’s with him).

Now because Rhaena is a highborn girl and his cousin he’s taking her back to Kings Landing with him and marrying her in front of witnesses(Otto would want to use her as a hostage, but Aemond shuts that down).

When he goes to the Riverlands he either sends her away to Oldtown or he keeps her in KL with his mother(I imagine that when the Blacks take the capital Rhaena probably has guards around the clock that way Aemond doesn't try to sneak her out). In this scenario, Aemond still dies and if Rhaena falls pregnant she probably loses the baby 😬(but if she's at Oldtown don't worry guys Garmund will comfort her).

If it's a situation where the Dance for some reason doesn’t break out(Viserys would have to not be oblivious) I could see Aemond doing something to force Daemon's hand that way he has to go along with their union. He eventually comes along, but there is an uphill battle. In this scenario, Rhaemond get their happy ending and Aemond is given a lordship of his own to pass down to his and Rhaena’s children.

As far as Baela and Aemond go, I honestly can’t picture it. Like they just don’t mesh at all IMO(sorry to any shippers out there I’m just not seeing it 🤷🏽‍♀️). Baela and Aegon on the other hand have delicious potential 👀🔥

While I don’t think it’s gonna be a full blown trailer- definitely think it’s going to be another teaser!! I’m hoping that it’s not just a mashup of the last teaser with maybe one or two new scenes.

Since it’s most likely a teaser we can’t really expect THAT much will be revealed (😭)

I would really love to see some of the new/newer dragons, like I would a little sneak peek at Moondancer, Sunfyre or the cannibal.

I feel like maybe we could see Rhaena & Jace this time around. Probably a little snippet of Rhaena at the vale and Jace at the north.

Im actually praying for some more snippets of the north, I absolutely love the north and the Starks and I think seeing Cregan would honestly give me life. I actually wonder if they gave Cregans actor a brown wig or if they just let him wear his blonde hair (Cregan is a secret targ theories?)

Either way I’m beyond excited!!! Definitely hoping for some new scenes. EEK. I really do hope it comes next week 😭😭

Baela & Rhaena placed a hit on Jaehaera cause why Baela had Daenaera up in KL like it was nothing ?

I think Rhaena had spies & courtesans whispering in Peake’s ears like “you are the hand, your daughter could be queen” knowing that he would try to harm that girl. Baela was tasked to find a replacement, a Valyrian bride from Essos perhaps with the help of Velaryon fleet.

Fast forward and instead of sending Alyn all the way to Essos to find Aegon’s new wife, they managed to find a Velaryon girl, Baela’s ward, an orphan, just like Aegon. Rhaena’s plan comes to fruition: Peake trying to pull an Otto and killing that girl. All Baela and Rhaena need now is to prepare Daenaera for KL.

It was genius when you think about it. Baela gets to solidify her maternal house status in KL by having the king’s wife be from House Velaryon & giving more protection to her brother, and Rhaena managed to completely destroy what’s left of the Green’s influence on the council by having him demoted.

Rhaena is very political astute and one thing about the Greens… they gon throw childish tantrums when their plans do not go as planned. She most likely knew Peake was going to threaten the king & council with his resignation. But the greed he had shown by trying to marry his daughter to Aegon rubbed the rest of the council the wrong way. thus no one was sad to see him go.

....I'm going to treat this as the joke I think it is and just not give a real answer.
