Touch-starved
MD-264N masterlist
Febuwhump day 1: touchstarved
@febuwhump
MD-264N wakes up.
1.1k
CWs: self-dehumanisation, fear of death, electric shock mention, conditioned whumpee, caretaker new master
MD-264N blinks itself awake. Its systems are not functioning at optimum efficiency but they're close to it, except for its ankle. There's uncomfortable sensation coming from that. But other than that it's much better than before.
Now. Where is it being stored? It has no restraints for… for some reason, and there's a window, so it isn't back at base. How did it get here?
Can it see the sky now?
One thing at a time. What is it wearing? It's far too light. The control harness and mitts are gone, and its clothes are… unusual. They're thick, soft, bright. The weapon looks at its arm, covered in baggy light blue soft fabric. So much brighter than it's allowed.
But it's not at base, so maybe it's what the people here want. That would make sense, right?
Next. This storage room. It's brighter than any at base, walls coloured light blue and pink. There's a wooden cabinet in the corner, a prosthetic forearm lying on it, and a window above the soft cot that MD-264N's on. That's unusual too. The weapon peers out of it as much as it can without moving, just about able to see a grey sky above.
That's its surroundings taken care of then. They don't make sense, but that's what's there. In that case, who brought it here? The last thing it remembers, it was on the street. Why did someone take it and put it in here? What do they want from it? Its hands are free, the only thing that makes sense is they want to use it, but there's no handlers here. This space is too big for the safe storage of weapons anyway.
MD-264N's throat goes tight. What happens if someone finds it out here? It's not safe. It doesn't know if this is what the people who put it here want but surely they want it to be secured safely.
MD-264N's eyes light on the cabinet, and it climbs off the soft cot it's been placed on and starts making its way towards it.
One foot goes on the floor, but when it tries to put its weight on the other foot, its ankle malfunctions and it collapses to the floor.
It attempts to push itself up as it hears footsteps, arms shaking, but it can't move. Aberrant moisture leaks out of the corners of its eyes. These people won't want a faulty weapon. They'll decommission it and then it'll never see the sky again.
The footsteps are very close now. MD-264N tries to kneel instead, desperate to be good enough to see the sky again.
"Hey, sweetheart, what are you doing on the floor? You're supposed to be resting." The voice is soft beside it, and the weapon's not sure who they're talking to. It sounds like they're talking to it but… you don't talk like that to weapons. Gentle, like it's a person. But there's no-one here. "Sit back on the bed, come on. Can you do that for me?"
MD-264N tries, it really does, but it can't move its leg. "This weapon is malfunctioning, sir, it– please." Please, please don't have it decommissioned, not yet.
"Okay. It's okay, sweetheart, I'll help you. I'm going to have to touch you, is that alright?"
"Yes, sir."
"Thank you." The speaker wraps an arm around it and helps it sit down on the cot. The arm is warm and the hand ungloved, and the weapon finds itself leaning into their touch. It stiffens. No, no that's bad, weapons don't need touch. "Hey, you don't need to move away. I bet you're touch-starved, huh?" MD-264N doesn't answer. It doesn't know how. "You don't need to… y'know, act all subservient. You can look at me. And you don't have to address me as sir, Rhian will do. Since it's my name. Do you have one?"
"This weapon has been designated MD-264N," answers the weapon automatically, "designed and programmed for urban use by the Ministry of Defence. Its capabilities are–"
"That's your designation, sweetheart, not your name. I guess that means you don't have one then. Would it be alright if I give you one?"
Why are they asking all these questions? Surely they know it can't refuse anyway.
"Yes, s– Rhian."
"Great! So I was thinking of Morgan, if you like it?"
"Yes, Rhian."
"That's good. You can look at me, sweetheart, you don't have to look at the floor. Why won't you look up?"
MD-264N (no, Morgan, it'd better start using the name its new commander wants) shivers. "This weapon is malfunctioning."
"What do you mean?"
Morgan swallows, preparing to give the information that might get it decommissioned. "Its left ankle is not functioning, and there is aberrant moisture leaking from its eyes. And it keeps having aberrant thoughts."
There's a short pause. "So… you're in pain, you're crying and you're probably scared? You're in a strange place with people you've never met, after being shot in the ankle, I'd be surprised if something wasn't wrong, frankly. I'll get Asha to bring you some more painkillers. It's okay to feel like this, sweetheart, it doesn't mean you can't look at me, or that I don't want to see you. Please, Morgan?"
Morgan can't refuse that, and it raises its head, not making eye contact but looking all the same. Rhian's hair is white dipped in red, and they smile at the weapon, mouth dimpling at the corners.
"There you are. Nice to meet you."
They're so soft, their hand warm on its arm, saying things that don't make sense, not for a weapon, but they're so nice. More moisture leaks from the weapon's eyes at the gentleness. Nobody's ever been this gentle with it.
"Hey, it's okay. Do you want a hug?"
A hug? But it– it's never, no-one's ever– it's just a weapon, why would anyone offer? Morgan nods anyway, and Rhian wraps their arm around it, holding it tight and warm. They don't seem bothered about touching it, like its handlers are, and their fingers almost burn through the fabric of the hoodie. It doesn't remember the last time anyone touched it without gloves.
Its eyes leak even more and it finds itself making sounds along with that, sounds that it would surely be shocked for with anyone else. But Rhian just shushes it gently, and it can't help leaning into their touch.
Of all the people it's met, Rhian is by far the most patient, and it can't help the aberrant and likely futile hope that the gentleness lasts.

Rafal and some Angel Mythology Connections!
*takes a deep breath* Prepare for stupidity.
So I low-key have these ancient Woods/headcanons, and I will elaborate on each. Today I will focus one that’s been on my mind for months.
(I posted links to some sources/further reading if you are interested.)
First off, I wonder if maybe Rafal was a sort of angel or the SGE equivalent of it? Obviously not the exact one found in Abrahamic religions, but a similar type of being. I do have a feeling that perhaps the twins' souls are actually reincarnated from a past time and reflect who they used to be. I will mention Rhian and his dragon fire another day, as well as twins and a clanlike structure.
I remember James Hook felt a guiding/more welcoming presence with Rafal’s magic far more than Rhian’s, who was wild and had a mind of its own.
For now, I will parallel Rafal and Raphael, the archangel.
Raphael is mentioned Scripturally in Tobit which is not found in most Christian bibles. I think Raphael has an Islamic counterpart under a different name, as well. (Israfel I think) In any case, "Rafal" is actually a Polish variant of Raphael.
(To get this straight, Rafal's energy is not nearly as positive as the original angel's and I think Rafal would be some kind of more violent/fighter angel, lol.)
Rafal accompanies a traveler albeit in not a benevolent way as the angel did with Tobias.
So basically, Rafal kinda encourages James to save Kyma in that one battle scene? Raphael matchmaked Tobias with Sarah after the demons afflicting her previous husband were gone. Rafal's magic seems to be somewhat healing and he does have a lot of knowledge. The archangel knew how to heal physically and spiritually, which was why he made Tobias catch a big fish. (iirc)
And lastly, Rafal's more comforting magic! At least later on in the plot of the prequels.
I am not sure if I will add angel Rafal in my ancient Woods AU (which I may start outlining now as I'm not publishing ATOTE atm)

Rebel Moon Rises: A Cosmic Saga Unveiled at Gamescom!
Tumblr media
🌌🚀 Prepare to embark on an intergalactic journey as visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder unveils the next chapter of his epic space odyssey, Rebel Moon! Today, at the electrifying Gamescom event, the mastermind behind cinematic spectacles such as '300' and 'Justice League: The Snyder Cut' dropped a bombshell that's set to send shockwaves across the cosmos and ignite the passions of science fiction aficionados and Rebel Moon rebels alike.
🌕🌟 What's the buzz, you ask? As we reveal the thrilling details of this sci-fi saga's evolution, brace yourselves. As you've already heard, Rebel Moon is not your average blockbuster—it's a two-part Netflix extravaganza that promises to redefine the genre. And today, Zack Snyder has graced us with the captivating titles of both chapters and a highly anticipated release date!
🔥✨ First up, mark your calendars for December 22, 2023, because that's when Part One, 'Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire,' will debut on the streaming giant. But that's just the beginning of this cosmic adventure! Part Two, 'Rebel Moon: The Scargiver,' will hit your screens on April 19, 2024, ensuring that the Rebel Moon universe continues to captivate and enthrall audiences.
🌌🌍 Set in a distant colony on the farthest reaches of the galaxy, Rebel Moon chronicles the harrowing tale of a peaceful settlement besieged by the ruthless forces of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, portrayed by the enigmatic Fra Fee. In this darkest hour, a mysterious figure named Kora, shown by the incredible Sofia Boutella, emerges as the colony's last beacon of hope.
💫✊ Tasked with assembling a ragtag team of warriors drawn from diverse backgrounds—outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and war orphans from disparate worlds—all united by their burning desire for redemption and revenge, Kora must lead this unlikely band to make a stand against the oppressive forces of the Mother World. Amidst the looming shadow of an entire Realm, the galaxy's fate hangs in the balance, forging a new alliance of heroes and setting the stage for an epic showdown of cosmic proportions.
🌟🌠 The stellar cast of Rebel Moon reads like a who's who of Hollywood's elite, including the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Staz Nair. With a screenplay co-crafted by Zack Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Kurt Johnstad, the stage is set for an unforgettable journey into the universe's farthest reaches.
🚀🌠 But that's not all! In a groundbreaking move, Zack Snyder has revealed that each installment of Rebel Moon will come in two versions—a family-friendly cut for all audiences and a more mature, adult-oriented version for those ready to plunge deeper into this cinematic cosmos.
🌌🌟 Rebel Moon represents Snyder's magnum opus, a labor of love gestating since his college days. Initially conceived as a Star Wars project, fate led it down a different path, and for that, we are eternally grateful. As producer Deborah Snyder explains, "We never wanted it to be [a Star Wars film]."
🪐🔮 This is more than just a movie; it's an entire universe unfolding before our eyes. Zack Snyder is crafting his own mythology; we are merely fortunate witnesses to this grand spectacle. Rebel Moon promises to be an explosive, action-packed journey filled with stunning cinematography, taking Snyder's signature style from classics like '300' and 'Sucker Punch' to uncharted territories—in the vast expanse of space!
🛸🌌 In this epic saga, Kora assembles a formidable team of fighters from diverse worlds, all united against the oppressive Imperium, portrayed by a star-studded cast including Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins. Expect breathtaking visuals, a riveting storyline, and a heavy dose of Snyder's unparalleled vision—all set against the backdrop of a cosmic battleground that's as thrilling as surreal.
🌌🪐 Rebel Moon is more than just a movie; it promises epic proportions. And if that's not enough to whet your appetite for this interstellar adventure, Zack Snyder also hinted at a colossal RPG set in the same universe and an exciting collaboration with mobile developer Super Evil Megacorp for a Rebel Moon game.
🌠🚀 So, fellow space travelers, gear up for a journey of a lifetime. Rebel Moon is on the horizon, destined to leave an indelible mark on the galaxy of science fiction. As we await its arrival, let's raise our rebel flags high and embrace the rebellion. The countdown to December 22nd begins now! May the cosmos be with us all! 🚀🌌🌠

LAST TIME ON POWER RANGERS UNIVERSE - Morphinaut reveals himself to be a pathetic divorce man, Ori confirms the inherent transness of Power Rangers, and we finally got to see usage of one of the most infamous cases of PR skipping a Sentai in the franchise history.............that’s right, the ToQger suits :) just kidding, it’s the Dairangers, duh.  It’s the penultimate issue of PRU, Power Rangers Universe #5!
Tumblr media
- ah yes, my favorite combo, the ketchup and mustard strike
Tumblr media
- can I take Ori’s line as subtle shade towards the main series shoving in new rangers/fighters every event
- also I’m heartbroken to report Aleia doesn’t pull off this move during the fight:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Morphinaut, holding a bottle of water: live
Rhian, holding a can of Monster: KILL
Tumblr media
- General Guy confirmed for Morphinaut’s partner/bestie/spouse, and they’re finally reminding me their name is CHENDIL.  That was it.  Sorry Chendil you deserved more screentime before your horrible demise
- Also you’ll notice Morphinaut isn’t glowing anymore.  That’s important
Tumblr media
- i don’t have anything funny to say here, partly because this is super sad, and partly because i’m only posting it for reference on what exactly they’re.....doing with Dark Specter.  i’ll get into that more when PRU finishes and i do a general writeup on it
Tumblr media
- oh god I’m so sorry Chendil it wasn’t bad enough you had little to no screentime you got the death glitter too
Tumblr media
- Ori: I’m tired of being nice I’m ready to go apeshitt
Tumblr media
- NOOOOO NOT DARK SPECTER FORCING THEM INTO THEIR DIVORCE ERA I’LL KILL HIM MYSELF
- unfortunately I’m not quite as invested in the issues between the other rangers as they get possessed.  Phiro Rhian who were you even talking about
Tumblr media
- Morphinaut’s out of grid reserve (which is why he’s not glowing anymore) so he can only save everyone by the power of his depression
Tumblr media
- BOOOOOOO EVERYONE ELSE WHO GOT POSSESSED BY DARK SPECTER GOT A SEXY MONSTER FORM BUT MORPHINAUT’S SUIT ONLY TURNED BLACK BOOOOOOOOOO
- also maybe this isn’t the most important thing to wonder about right now but uh.  how’s the Phantom Ruby going to tie into all of this.

Casting Thoughts
Yes, I did a long post when the rumours first dropped but hey now it’s confirmed plus we have characters descriptions, and I’m bored so let’s do this all over again people.  Under the cut because it got long
Sisi Stringer as Rose Hathaway
I said this in my other post but I’m pretty happy with Sisi as Rose.
Visually I think she’s a great fit, I love that they casted a WoC in the main role, and I think if she can bring Rose’s humour and sarcasm to the role, she’s going to do great.
The character description mentions Rose being “fiery and outspoken”, happy to jump into the action, and the strongest fighter in her class but struggling to toe the line, which is all very Rose-esque, especially in the first book.  It sounds to me like they have a good grasp on her character.
I’m a little disappointed we didn’t hear more about Rose as a character since she is the lead - it felt like the descriptions for Lissa and Dimitri both gave us a little more to go on - but it is only a very preliminary description so I’m happy to wait for more.
Daniela Nieves as Lissa Dragomir
Daniele is another one who I was happy with straight away.
She’s probably not what I imagined for Lissa visually but that’s not a bad thing either; I will be interested to see if they dye her hair a lighter colour (like a caramel-blonde) but personally that’s not something I need to see for her to be a great fit for Lissa.
I think she has a very sweet face which works well for a character like Lissa but I think she’s also going to be able to stand up in Lissa’s more fiercer moments which is nice to see as well.
The character descriptions mentions her as being “carefree and kind-hearted” who “coasts” through life until a death in the family thrusts her into a new role.  That sounds a lot like pre-series Lissa so I wonder if we’re going to see a bit of that in the show before Andre (and her parents??) die and see that change.
It’s curious though that she’s described as the younger sister of the heir apparent - which would be Andre - so it sounds like they’ve changed it so Andre was supposed to be King.  Obviously a deviation from the books but I don’t hate it?  I don’t think it would change Lissa’s arc all that much because obviously she was always going to grow up to be an influential royal figure, this just slightly changes the dynamics of it.
The description also specifically mentions that she’s uninterested in “political machinations” and the “hypocrisy of the moroi royal society” which sounds very accurate to book!lissa as well.
All in all I’m very happy with what they’re doing with Lissa.
Keiron Moore as Dimitri Belikov
This is one who’s really grown on me since the rumoured cast list started circulating.  At first I was kind of eh about him but I can really see him as Dimitri now.
I will be curious to see if he grows out his hair or not though.
As far as I know Keiron is not Russian, there’s not a lot about him online, but there’s some instagram activity on his account linking him to UK based companies so that would be my guess as to where he’s from.  They’ve kept Dimitri’s incredibly Russian name so I guess we’re to assume Keiron might be doing an accent and they’re keeping Dimitri’s backstory relatively the same?  I’m not gonna be super mad if they change it just because I think it’s doable for him not to be Russian (I know, I know a whole book is set in Russia but lbr here they could make him from anywhere and just send Rose there in that book).
The biggest thing for me will be his chemistry with Sisi, Danila and Zoey had great chemistry (imo anyway) which saved the move a little for me, so it’ll be important that Sisi and Keiron do as well.  They’ve interacted a few times online which is cute so I’m hoping they were able to do some chemistry reads and that will translate on screen.
The character description mentions Dimitri as being “lethal, disciplined, discreet, and totally committed” as well as living by “a deep moral code” but with more going on “beneath his stoic, watchful surface” which sounds exactly like book!Dimitri to me.
They don’t really specify what his role at St Vlad’s is going to be but they do mention that he is a guardian so I’m assuming they’re keeping some sort of age gap between him and Rose.  They also don’t mention anything about their relationship in the description, be it student/teacher, platonic, romantic, whatever, but they do say he has “an expansive spirit that could threaten to expose the underlying tension between his sense of what’s right and his formal duty to the Moroi.” which seems like a nod to their relationship.
Andre Dae-Kim as Christian Ozera
This was one of my favourite casting choices from the original rumoured cast list and I still love it.
The idea of a non-white Christian makes a lot of sense to me and I think Andre could do a great job of Christian’s aloofness (in the first book) as well as his sarcasm and growing confidence across the other books.
His character description confuses me a bit though: “Intelligent and thoughtful, Christian is the pariah of the school and royal court, due to his parents’ unforgivable societal sins.” sounds accurate enough to the book (although idk if thoughtful is quite the word I’d use for Christian - maybe they mean it in the sense that he’s quiet and keeps to himself?).
Even “Well-read and hungry for knowledge” doesn’t sound that far off, idk if he was *that* particularly studious in the books, but it doesn’t necessarily not make sense either you know?
But “he searches for faith-based answers and discovers a kindred spirit who is also looking for the truth” ??? My cynical, irreverent asshole Christian is now a man of faith? I’m assuming Lissa is the “kindred spirit” (again weird word choice but maybe they mean she’s feeling lost because of the death of her family?) but I just cannot see Christian as being particularly religious.
I’m trying to keep an open mind about these changes because you never know they might play out totally different on screen, but I really hope they didn’t make these changes, particularly that Christian is studious and religious, just because they cast an Asian actor as him (because they feel a little like Asian stereotypes).
J August Richards as Victor Dashkov
This is one that didn’t appear on the original rumoured cast list (as far as I saw) and it’s so different to his description in the books that I kind of don’t have an opinion about it as a casting choice.
I’ve never seen him in anything before so purely on a visual level I think he could be a great fit for Victor, I just think it’ll really come down to how he plays it.
As for this character description: “Victor is a Moroi noble vampire with a heart of gold who’s highly regarded for his role as advisor and political strategist to Moroi dignitaries.” as well as mentioning that he has intelligence and influence, sounds pretty accurate to the book.  Obviously if Andre was the heir to the throne, Victor had to be shifted out of that role, but I think his book 1 arc could still work if they wanted it to.
The “heart of gold” bit obviously made me chuckle and I really hope they threw it in there as a kind of decoy to throw non-book-readers off the fact that he’s actually the villain in book 1/s1.
As for giving him a husband and two daughters, my thoughts are: why the fuck not? He didn’t have a love interest in the original books and I’m always down for more lgbtq+ rep.  My only concern is it maybe playing into the trope of evil/villain characters being queer-coded.  And as for having two daughters, well as long as one of them is Natalie I don’t mind.
Anita-Joy Uwajeh as Tatiana Vogel
Okay this is the most bizarre one imo, not because of the casting, but just the character description.
I mean “Tatiana is a Moroi vampire and political underdog who slowly takes the royal court by storm. Motivated by love and a sense of justice, Tatiana has a unique skill of making herself seem of no consequence until we realize much too late that she was always the one to watch.” sounds extremely Tasha Ozera to me, so like why not just make this character Tasha?  Nothing about this sounds like Tatiana, and Tatiana wasn’t even a Vogel anyway (well Vogel wasn’t even one of the 12 royal families), she was an Ivashkov.
In terms of Anita-Joy herself, well I mean we don’t really have a character to compare her to, is she supposed to be more like Tasha or Tatiana?  She looks fairly young, so my guess is actually on Tasha, but we’ll have to wait to see I guess.
Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mia Karp
This is another one that I was instantly a fan of.
I was so not a fan of Mia’s casting in the movie (I can’t even remember who played her tbh but I really didn’t like it) so this Mia is a lot closer to how I imagine her.
I think she’ll be able to carry Mia’s transformation from bratty social-climber to badass fighter really well.
The character description is interesting though.  “Witty, cutting, and just the right kind of ruthless when necessary, non-Royal Mia has a long-term plan to social climb her way into the ranks of royalty, with all the privilege and freedom that entails.” sound pretty bang on to Mia in the first book.
“A plan complicated by her instant chemistry with Meredith, a Guardian-in-training, as Mia struggles to reconcile her attraction to Meredith with her lowly status.” is an obvious deviation though, and one I kind of love???  Give me all the queer rep, and if we get to see Mia confront the issue of comp-het I’m so here for it.
It’s kind of funny though because I’ve seen theories that Meredith is a replacement for Eddie and Mia/Eddie has always been my sort of rarepair ship.
The last name Karp is weird af though.  Is she supposed to be Sonya’s daughter?  And if that’s the case I wonder if we’re going to actually see Sonya turn Strigoi in the show’s first season or something and that triggers the change in Mia?  Interesting concept but I’m not sure how the timeline will work.
Rhian Blundell as Meredith
So this is another new one, and tbh I hadn’t given Meredith *that* much though in the past but she’s probably close to how I would have pictured her which is cool.
The elephant in the room with this casting is that Meredith’s role in the books was relatively minor - she was just kind of that character that got brought up whenever R.M needed a dhampir who wasn’t Rose/Dimitri/Mason/Eddie.  So clearly she’s going to have a bigger role in the tv show which I don’t mind but I do wonder if we’re going to lose a character - probably Eddie lbr - in order to have her.  They haven’t casted an Eddie yet as far as we know, but I have seen it pointed out that Eddie’s role in book 1 was pretty small so maybe they just aren’t announcing it.  But there’s also the possibility that maybe Meredith will sort of replace Eddie and be the third part of Rose and Mason’s friendship.
I’m very interested by this part of her character description though, “She has little patience for Rose’s volatility or Mia’s elitism, and regularly calls both of them out.”
Jonetta Kaiser as Sonya Karp
I don’t necessarily dislike Jonetta as Sonya but I am confused by this choice.  She looks fairly young, which tbf Sonya was young-ish I guess, but if Mia is supposed to be her daughter she doesn’t look old enough to have a teenaged daughter.  So maybe Sonya and Mia are sisters? Cousins? Just have each other’s last names for no reason? I really don’t know.  They also look nothing alike.
Other than that, I don’t really have an opinion about Jonetta as Sonya.  Obviously looks nothing like how Sonya was described but that’s not new nor a massive concern for me.
I can’t really tell just from looking at her, and I haven’t seen her in anything, if she would play a good Sonya.  I think with a lot of the characters it’s going to come down to the personality they bring to the part and the writing.
I looooooove her character description though:  “Quiet, careful and decidedly odd, Sonya is not of royal bloodline and sits out on the fringe of Moroi society, preferring to spend her time in the library or her gardens. Not a person who likes a scene, nonetheless she has a quiet but profound power of her own. She is taken by surprise when a Dhampir Guardian named Mikhail shows interest in her, a relationship that will expose both the brightest and darkest parts of her heart.”  It’s everything I would probably want from a description of Sonya and I’m more and more convinced that we’re going to see Sonya’s descent into madness and transformation into a Strigoi play out in maybe the first season which I am so curious how they’re going to work into the timeline.
Andrew Liner as Mason Ashford
Our last one and another one who doesn’t look remotely like his description but again? Not a surprise and not a problem for me.  He looks like he could play Mason’s goofiness really well as well as be a solid contender for a love interest for Rose.
“Charming, loyal and popular, Mason is Rose’s main competition in the quest to become the No. 1 Guardian-in-training. Though their relationship is casual on her side, he is hopeful she will finally look at him and see him as something more.” His character description makes a lot of sense, maybe him being Rose’s main competition is a bit of a deviation? But I think that’s more an indication that he’s supposed to be a strong fighter which isn’t inaccurate to the books.  The rest sounds great.
Other Thoughts
Descriptions of the show specifically mention friendship and classism as major themes which I am very happy to hear about because those are the two parts of VA that I love the most.
Am a little more worried about it being described as “sexy” though, if they shove a whole bunch of meaningless sex scenes in it just because it’s a YA show I’m not gonna be happy.
Seen the show compared to “Game of Thrones” and “Bridgerton” which at first had me like oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck not good not good not good.  But thinking about it more and trying to understand where Plec’s coming from with that description I wonder if means similar to GoT as in the cut-throat nature of the Moroi/Dhampir society cause I can kind of see that.  And as for Bridgerton I wonder if she’s referring to the kind of social-climbing aspects of it, because again that makes sense and it seems like a theme she really wants to concentrate on.  I hope that’s what she means by those comparisons, or that she just wants to compare it to popular shows to get people to watch it.  The worst would be if she tries to throw in a lot of unnecessary sex scenes to make it like those shows, because I hate when they do that, especially when the characters are teenagers.
Interesting to hear that Plec has known about the series since before Twilight or TVD - not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
Seems like it’s actually mostly (or all??) written by Marguerite MacIntyre which is interesting because I know people were worried about Julie Plec - I’ve never watched anything by either of them so I’m neutral at this point.

Vampire Academy, Peacock 2022 TV Series
pilot directed by Billie Woodruff
cast and roles below the cut
Sisi Stringer (Mortal Kombat) as Rose Hathaway, a vampire-human hybrid known as a Dhampir. Fiery and outspoken, Rose is a true fighter in spirit and in practice. She always jumps into action, and more often than not, this results in demerits. She might be the strongest fighter in her class, but her success will depend entirely on her willingness to toe the line when it counts.
Daniela Nieves (Every Witch Way) as Lissa Dragomir, a Royal Moroi vampire. Growing up the younger sister to the heir apparent, Princess Vasilisa Dragomir is a carefree, kind-hearted, royal princess coasting through her studies and happily chasing fun. Lissa is uninterested in the political machinations of the Royal Court or the hypocrisy of Moroi royal society. But with a sudden death in her family, Lissa is thrust into a role she’s neither trained for nor is emotionally equipped to handle.
Kieron Moore (Cold Blow Lane) as Guardian Dimitri Belikov, the model of a Dhampir guardian: lethal, disciplined, discreet, and totally committed to his role as bodyguard to the ruling Moroi, the “good,” mortal vampires of his world. He lives by a deep moral code, but beneath his stoic, watchful surface, there’s an expansive spirit that could threaten to expose the underlying tension between his sense of what’s right and his formal duty to the Moroi.
André Dae Kim (Degrassi) as Christian Ozera, a Royal Moroi vampire. Intelligent and thoughtful, Christian is the pariah of the school and royal court, due to his parents’ unforgivable societal sins. Well-read and hungry for knowledge, he searches for faith-based answers and discovers a kindred spirit who is also looking for the truth.
J. August Richards (Angel) as Prince Victor Dashkov. Victor is a Moroi noble vampire with a heart of gold who’s highly regarded for his role as advisor and political strategist to Moroi dignitaries. He’s a fierce loyalist who uses his intelligence and influence to protect that which he values most: the well-being of his husband and two adopted daughters, as well as the betterment of his Moroi community.
Anita-Joy Uwajeh (Lucky Man) as Tatiana Vogel. Tatiana is a Moroi vampire and political underdog who slowly takes the royal court by storm. Motivated by love and a sense of justice, Tatiana has a unique skill of making herself seem of no consequence until we realize much too late that she was always the one to watch.
Mia McKenna-Bruce (Get Even) as Mia Karp, a student at St. Vladimir’s Academy. Witty, cutting, and just the right kind of ruthless when necessary, non-Royal Mia has a long-term plan to social climb her way into the ranks of royalty, with all the privilege and freedom that entails. A plan complicated by her instant chemistry with Meredith, a Guardian-in-training, as Mia struggles to reconcile her attraction to Meredith with her lowly status.
Rhian Blundell (Nobody Girl) as Meredith, a smart, strong-willed Dhampir who is a keen observer, which makes her an excellent strategist and a valuable asset. She has little patience for Rose’s volatility or Mia’s elitism, and regularly calls both of them out.
Jonetta Kaiser (Two Sides) as Sonya Karp. Quiet, careful and decidedly odd, Sonya is not of royal bloodline and sits out on the fringe of Moroi society, preferring to spend her time in the library or her gardens. Not a person who likes a scene, nonetheless she has a quiet but profound power of her own. She is taken by surprise when a Dhampir Guardian named Mikhail shows interest in her, a relationship that will expose both the brightest and darkest parts of her heart.
Andrew Liner (grown-ish) as Mason Ashford. Charming, loyal and popular, Mason is Rose’s main competition in the quest to become the number one Guardian-in-training. Though their relationship is casual on her side, he is hopeful she will finally look at him and see him as something more.

While We're Waiting for S4: What's Next for Hélène and The Twelve?
Tumblr media
I can count on both hands everything I liked about Killing Eve's wonky carrot of a third season, but one of them was the introduction of Camille Cottin as the enigmatic Helene. She projects a chilly confidence and provides something to the show it has lacked for its entire run: a quantifiable "bad guy" who loves their work and has no reluctance to use whatever means required to achieve her goals.
Cottin, best known for the French TV series Call My Agent quickly established herself in the fourth episode as the lady in the dazzling red shoes who gives the orders and demands results. You could see that in the way Dasha lost all her swag when Hélène showed up and how eagerly the elderly assassin tried to reassure her boss that she had Villanelle focused and under control.
Helene killed all that noise. You want to go back home, to Russia? Where the people will be dancing in the streets and chanting your name. "Dasha! Dasha! Dasha!" Well, you can't. Until we say you can. Skittish is not acceptable. Get her working. Without this, um, extracurricular crap.
Tumblr media
Dasha tried to recover and somersaulted into Plan B. "I can kill Polastri!" she suggested helpfully, but Hélène wasn't hearing any of her bullshit. She told the aging acrobat/assassin that killing Eve would only cause more problems and directed Dasha to drive a wedge between Eve and Villanelle.
This prompts the question of Why? Certainly, killing Eve would piss off Villanelle, but there's all sorts of ways to take Eve out that doesn't point back to The Twelve. Why did Hélène spare Eve's life when taking it would be the simplest way to remove a pesky distraction for Villanelle's attention?
Best guess is the nosy ex-MI6 agent in the drab turtleneck factors somehow into Hélène and The Twelve's plans. Whether by recruiting Eve to their cause or using her as leverage to keep Villanelle in line, nobody can say, but there's something else going on by sparing Eve's life. Before she met an Asian woman with amazing hair in the restroom of a hospital, Villanelle was a flamboyant, but fairly goal-oriented assassin for The Twelve. She does have a bad habit of defying and killing her handlers as Konstantin can testify to (and Dasha, Raymond and Anton can not). Hélène's handling of the unpredictable killer is more subtle and seductive. She flatters Villanelle, strokes her ego and disarms her with charm and a motherly approach that shifts to being coyly seductive. Here is an approach Villanelle is unfamiliar with. She doesn't necessarily like it when Hélène strokes her hair, but isn't sure how to respond to it. Is Hélène trying to seduce Villanelle? Not necessarily, but she is definitely trying to manipulate her.
Back in Season One, this disarming approach might have worked on that version of Villanelle. However, this one however doesn't trust Hélène's display of feigned affection. Villanelle doesn't trust anyone completely (not even Eve), but she definitely is not so off her game as to put any trust in Hélène.
Tumblr media
Even after all this time, nothing is clear about what The Twelve is trying to accomplish. Their motivations remain murky and unclear and nobody's to blame for that except the writers. With the last season looming on the horizon, The Twelve and their incompetent crew of killers (Diego, Nadia, Felix, etc) don't seem like all that much of threat. Going into the next season, Hélène has to be high up in The Twelve's chain of command, if not it's leader. There's really no one else who could be unless Carolyn chooses to reveal herself in the 11th hour. When she executed Paul it seemed as if it was as much Carolyn punishing him for fucking up, plus shutting him down so Eve couldn't grill him. "Do you know why I love you Villanelle? Because you're an agent of chaos. And I love chaos. Chaos disrupts. It rips apart and starts again. It's like a forest fire. It burns, it kills. It's monstrous, but it's beautiful." Villanelle didn't know how to respond to that, but when Hélène called her a beautiful monster, that's when she finally realized she would never be seen as fully human by The Twelve and when running to Carolyn and then Eve. I think the only reason Villanelle wanted to become a Keeper was to get closer to figuring out who The Twelve is and then work out how to kill them all. But one thing she's never had to face is an opponent who isn't afraid of her and is coolly confident she's not a threat.
Tumblr media
Villanelle tries to rattle Hélène with a threat that she's trying to figure out how to kill her, but that doesn't phase the older woman in the slightest. She responds dismissively: "You wouldn't be able to, by the way. Kill me before I kill you. You're a child, you have no idea what you're dealing with." Can Hélène throw hands if she has to? Could she kick Villanelle's ass and snap Eve's neck like a chicken? Questions in search of answers, but here we have a highly controlled and calculating woman, who like Carolyn, sees all the moves on the chessboard before they're made by her opponent.
Villanelle has never faced a physical battle with a superior fighter, but Hélène may chose to extract revenge for the killing of Rhian with her bare hands and that is a tantalizing prospect of woman-vs-woman in combat.
Besides Villaneve content, Hélène's return for revenge in Season Four makes for an intriguing subplot as Villanelle and Eve try to escape the Big Bad that casts a shadow over any possible future together. Hélène will have to be confronted because she cannot be escaped.
That is, unless the KE writer's room simply throws Hélène out like they did with Raymond, and she's never mentioned again, which while ridiculous, is always a possibility with this show.

The Love for Glory and Gore: Sophester Fic — Futuristic Gladiator AU
Tumblr media
Hi, promoting this here bc why not!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25195318/chapters/61063534
I honestly can’t explain this to its full extent (shut up i know it’s my own goddamn writing) but here’s a short description of Sophie/Hester:
Sophie:
Skilled fighter who often relies on magic. She specializes in fire and lightning (azula inspired?? yeah).
She’s athletic in terms of gymnastics but not strong in terms of muscle.
Caught in a toxic relationship with Rhian in which she is always dependent on him. He created Sophie’s entire career and spoils her with every luxury, so Sophie feels the need to constantly win him over.
She likes the “game” of murdering people a bit too much.
I think she’s cool!
Hester:
In contrast to Sophie, she has the physical advantage but weak in magic and consequently never uses it. Specializes in blade weapons.
Openly hates Japeth and Aric, her masters, because no shit-- they try to scare her into submission and generally think of her as a financial investment/punching bag
Grew up in a Hunger Games style academy (called the Reformatory) with Anadil and Dot where the best fighters are sold off to be slaves.
She gets a bionic arm.
Therefore, uh, she’s cool too!!
Other Aspects:
- Magic mixed with technology. extremely futuristic.
- Gladiator system!! fight scenes!!!
- Sophie and Hester are rivals
- People have said it’s surreal? which is like. cool.
- Reatrix tattoo shop! Agatha is a weapon-welder!
- Crumbs of Keian, Horavan, Agaster, Reatrix.
- Sophie x Rhian toxic shit
- Sophie x Hester slow burn... like REALLY slow
- Major character death and you’re going to love it, don’t be worried.
IM STARTING CHAPTER TWO RN, HOLD THE FUCK UP!!!!
I WANT TO MAKE IT GOOD YK?
for people who already read & commented/reviewed, thank you!! fr i read the comments over and over again smiling and full of happiness ugh god.
This was written for val @ofthickettumble ‘s crack ship contest 💞
And guess what bitches. I won 3rd place that must mean ... uh something.
Anyways, I think it’s pretty good!  It’s definitely a Very Different AU but like idk give it a chance lmao.
