Some TMA thoughts.

One of the greatest things that I enjoy in regards to The Magnus Archives is the meta tragic humor that is the existence of Elias Bouchard. I don't mean to belittle his importance to the plot and certainly recognize that his situation was unfortunate. It's funny how everyone views Jon Sims as the antichrist, when this also applies to Elias too. He was certainly just as chosen for a role as much as Jon was.

To those people angry about the synced ao3 tags of Elias and Jonah, therein also lies tragedy. The funniest thing about that situation is the fact all the blame, hatred, disgust, and fear, all falls back on a name; the final remnant of a person who cannot and could not fight back. In universe, it's a corruption of great proportions, the usurpation of a man unprepared for what he sought. Jonah wholesale subsumed Elias's life, and this ripple effects the way we view Elias in real life. Concurrently it is another twist of a knife that drives further irritation deeper when one attempts to assign the proper credit for the events transpired. Deliberate misattribution of critical events is horrifying too and is so effortlessly executed by Jonah, almost like an inverse plagiarism. Seeing people frustrated about that in tagging delights me in a way, that if one chooses to engage meta-contextually, the acts perpetrated by Jonah bleed upwards into our reality and afflict it too. Continuing to hate Elias in general, you perpetuate the narrative established by Jonah. The Magnus Archives as a podcast written by Jonny Sims is creative and all the more chilling as a result.

personal mildly funny interpretation of jonah i have is that he takes on some of the characteristics of the people he possesses because technically he's just inserting his own conciousness inside their already developed brains. he possesses richard mendelson and all of a sudden he's really into chess. he possesses james wright and all of a sudden he has weirdly specific opinions on coffee. he possesses elias bouchard and all of a sudden he knows how to roll a joint

I've long had a stupid headcanon that jonah actually had another body very briefly between richard mendelson and james wright because as the seventies dawned he thought "I say, women have a few rights now, and I've always been sort of curious to see what it's like, maybe it's finally time to take a female host" so he did and was immediately doused with an ice bucket of gender dysphoria that he was completely unprepared for, leading to his messiest and most rushed body transfer ever. the two-month director eileen jackson who disappeared abruptly under mysterious circumstances has been a bit of an urban legend among institute staff ever since, they say you can still hear her voice echoing in the stairwells.

Do you have any end avatar Jonah thoughts? His relationship with death is so important to me...aghh especially the suicidal but desperately not wanting to die dichotomy

i think about how he directly led his regency pals into death specifically at the hands of the entities. if you have a headcanon of jonah having an end encounter as a child (which i do!) you could interpret this as him attempting to feed them to the end / to the entities in general as to not be fed on himself. the end was probably a subject of fascination for him for a long time, fuelling him towards the eye, which makes him into an instrument of death via his immortality. the worst kind of death too, not living dead but dead living.

we don't see anything of jonah after he does his first bodyhop up until richard mendelson who was around in at least the 1960s that's a solid >100 years of fuckinf around and finding out. how many people died from him or because of him or for him? like lambs to slaughter.

and that's not even touching on the people he's cared about (if he can, or ever did), who he had to watch die. if you're a lonelyeyes enjoyer you can make this about the lukases. i am not a lonelyeyes enjoyer so i have no thoughts about that.

even jonah isn't alive, not really. he can't run forever, and his living isn't really a life at all. his current body isn't alive and he himself is a desiccated corpse in the panopticon. like i said, not living dead but dead living. and he's had to kill himself over and over; go to his own funeral, receive his own will, destroy his own body so nobody notices the missing eyes. do you think jonah considers himself to be alive?

and all of that is to say nothing about the fact that jonah literally gave the entire world and also the entities themselves to the end

My headcanons for the heads of the Magnus Institute- Part 2!

Part 1

Joseph Winsley (1903-1934)

This dude was closer to the previous head's affairs, to the higher administration of the Magnus Institute (which is by now a pretty recognized establishment). And also pretty ambitious. So it didn't come as a surprise when he became the next Head.

Joseph Winsley came from a very religious family. I don't think Jonah cares. He has his own god of terror (or like, gods. Fourteen of them lol) to bother with.

This body has dark hair arranged in a fashionable wave and pale skin, he looks a bit like a vampire. He's got literally the best mustache, thick and beautiful. He has a slim nose, practically non existent lips and in general looks a bit like a lizard. He has a very deep voice, and in retrospect I think he'll end up being one of Jonah's favorite bodies.

This era is somewhat characterised by darker tones, during this time he was wearing dark blues and greens. That's around this time Jonah started to make the shift from reds to greens. This was a very slow process lmao. Also, hats were very much a thing at this time. Jonah never liked hats, not a big hat guy he is, but for once he sucks it up and puts on a top hat.

Anyways, Joseph was 35 when Jonah took over and 66 when he booked it off. I think by this point Jonah got a bit more comfortable with extending his stays. Joseph Winsley disappeared under mysterious circumstances around the time of the new year, which means the next Head was appointed the year after.

Richard Mendelson (1935-1973)

The body Jonah stayed in the longest so far, from when Richard was 31 to when he was 69. Richard stayed in relatively good health, so there wasn't a need for a change.

He has a flat, low nose, I guess you could call his face gaunt? With hard lines. He looks a bit like a predator and his lips are constantly curled in a sort of smirk. He has huge ears.

After the world's best mustache, you've got the world's shittiest stache. Jonah still loves it, this freak. Plus some sparse, low brows. Richard really doesn't have much in the way of facial hair. He does have glorious hair though, wavy and thick and chocolate far beyond the moment he should have been greying. And he is rocking these undercuts baby.

Oh, yeah. This one wears glasses (more as a statement, Jonah never needs glasses). He's also VERY tall, and built like a stick, with narrow poking shoulders.

I did promise suspenders and I delivered, thank you very much.

could u explain to me how jonah magnus can be Scottish? like a genuine question, im not trying to be rude im just curious how u came to that conclusion

To me it seems logical that someone close to polytheistic pantheons would be from an area in the UK that already had support from similar viewpoints. (Scandinavia having the Norse religion.)

Jonah founded the Institute in 1818 in statement 127 Remains to be Seen.

Jonah resided in an Edinburgh townhouse through which he ran his Institute initially in 1841 in statement 50 Foundations.

Jonah moved the institute that he founded in 1818 up in Edinburgh to London in 1867 (Post 1st attempt at the Watcher's Crown.) in 160 Eye Opens.
