Every time I see something about how no one should have any Nazi memorabillia, I think of that Vin Diesel movie "The Pacifier" where Vin is playing some military guy (I think either a Marine or Navy Seal) and he's supposed to protect these kids while their mom deals with all the covert op stuff their dad did.
And he starts seeing the teenage son come home with nazi stuff, particularly the arm band, and so he follows the kid to a secret meeting, and it turns out to be a rehearsal for The Sound of Music, which takes place as the nazis invaded Austria and very much paints the nazis as the bad guys (if you've seen the gif of Christopher Plummer ripping up a nazi flag, it's from the movie version of The Sound of Music). But anyway yeah this kid knows nazis are bad but he's playing one in a musical, shame on the costume crew for letting cast members take the arm bands home.
I'd love to have some good message to end this with but I've got nothing. If you're part of a production of The Sound of Music, Cabaret, The Producers, or anything else with nazis keep all your nazi shit at the theatre, I guess? Learn about the past so we aren't doomed to repeat it, but also make sure it can't be mistaken for celebrating atrocities?
#[insert that one story of the costumer who understood the cast members' disgust but needed the bands to last the whole run]#the pacifier#the sound of music#also I get amused when people talk about 'when did musicals get so political?'#bonus points if they cite Sound of Music as a good clean non-political musical because all they know is kids singing with Julie Andrews#newsflash: musicals have always been political#we've just unfortunately gotten where 'Fuck Nazis' is a controversial statement

The Von Trapp children ranked by their likelihood of being on AO3
So, the bestie @coruscantrhapsody and I have a tradition of watching The Sound of Music every New Year’s Eve. NYE is a better holiday when you’re at home in pajamas, eating cupcakes you got earlier in the day. And what better way to ring in a new year than witnessing Christopher Plummer rip apart a Nazi flag?
In the spirit of our tradition, we’ve compiled the following list. How likely is it that each of the Von Trapp children are on AO3? Well…
Brigitta: Definitely on AO3. Has one username she uses more generally and another for tasteful smut. Mostly a dudeslash writer. Tends to be in one fandom at a time and is well-respected in that space.
Kurt: A master of the crack drabble, Kurt participates in a number of different challenges and exchanges in a number of different fandoms. Likely to write one of those Yuletide fics that goes viral for unique formatting.
Liesl: Insisted that fanfiction was childish before falling headlong into a regrettable Dramione phase. Now writes fics centered on female characters in fandoms that need more of that. She is proud of how her writing has evolved but notes the drop in kudos.
Louisa: Has absolutely written fanfiction. Tends to write straightforwardly tropey fics on a reliable update schedule. Aggressively wants to be seen as different from her siblings so she left AO3 for Wattpad.
Gretl: Unfortunately caught a glimpse of AO3 once, but her siblings pulled her away from the computer before it could become too much of a Formative Trauma. Liesl prints out the most wholesome My Little Pony and Pokémon fics and Gretl illustrates them.
Marta: Is she on AO3? You’ll never know.
Friedrich: Lives a blessedly offline life. Supports his siblings, though.

Seeing Christopher Plummer playing a Nazi in a movie is so jarring, haha. It's like, Captain Von Trapp?! You? You who ripped a Nazi flag right down the middle? How could you betray both us and yourself like this? Et tu, Georg??? 😭
#Christopher Plummer#Captain Von Trapp#The movie was The Scarlet and the Black#Based on a true story. It was good!#And Plummer was the bad guy haha

The Return (2024) review

Seems odd to be watching this after the recent announcement of Christopher Nolan directing his own version of Homer’s Ilyad. Then again beholding a cyclops in all in IMAX glory - I mean that’s the definition of a “must-see”.
Plot: After 20 years away, Odysseus washes up on the shores of Ithaca, haggard and unrecognizable. The king finds much has changed since he left to fight in the Trojan War. His beloved wife, Penelope, is a prisoner in her own home and hounded to choose a new husband. Their son faces death at the hands of suitors who see him as an obstacle in their pursuit of Penelope and the kingdom. Odysseus is no longer the mighty warrior his people remember, but he must face his past to save his family.
Deciding to adapt the ending of Homer’s poem of Greek mythology is definitely a choice, as The Odyssey” is a massive scale epic involving monsters and gods (again, I can see why Nolan got hooked). Yet director Uberto Pasolini ostensibly is more interested on the human melodrama of ancient post-war regret, and Odysseus’ inner struggle of loss and where he belongs. Don’t get me wrong, I would very much be up for watching a psychological drama set in the mythos of Homer’s classic, however The Return comes off more as a bunch of shirtless dudes in robes hanging out on an Italian island together recreating dialogue scenes from Xena: Warrior Princess. Add to that the leaden and deliberately slow paced narrative structure that acts as if there is more substance in places where there is not, and the result is a bland and forgettable flick that a teacher would happily use in a secondary school class to distract the kids whilst they themselves can catch up on marking homeworks.
Ralph Fiennes is ridiculously ripped with a ropey chiseled-leather physique, and is a stark contrast to how he looks in his other movie this year - Conclave. Fiennes tries his best at being stoic and vulnerable whilst monologuing about how survival has hollowed him out, whilst Juliette Binoche mopes about teary eyed trying to withhold from her inner horny temptations, whilst Charlie Plummer (the kid who got kidnapped and had his finger chopped off in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World) is averagely vanilla. Don’t get me wrong, I like vanilla as a taste, and Plummer seems like a nice chap, but his lime delivery in this was atrocious, and you can tell he was busy trying to memories his lines rather than act them out. Marwan Kenzari as one of the only-seemingly-nice suiters rounds out the notable cast, giving a methodical and reserved performance.
It says a lot when the only time I actually felt any emotion in this was when Odysseus sees his old faithful companion Argos after many many years, as the adorable creature recognises it’s master that’s it’s been waiting for, and then calmly passes away. A brief moment that showcased the power of the dog! Otherwise a flimsy and average piece of historical/mythological entertainment. Don’t come for the action though, as goodness the bloodbath at the end of the film features some of the most basic and lazy sword fighting choreography I’ve ever seen - the way Fiennes swung his sword and fought those guys looked like a bunch of children playing with wooden swords. Even the dated 1997 mini-series did it better!
Overall score: 5/10

Y’all know that iconic scene of Christopher Plummer’s Captain Von Trapp ripping the flag in the Sound of Music film adaptation as a symbolic act of dissent?
Imagine a scene like that, but it’s former Press Secretary Shi’al ripping a flag with the Empire’s insignia.
