watching the kelvin timeline movies is like. i fucking hate the alternate original series. ive watched star trek 2009 more times than god. aos kirk is a parody of the man that he was meant to be. into darkness is one of the most romantic movies ever made. spocks anger issues completely betray his compassion and love in the original series. aos kirk loves spock unconditionally. the movies forget the most basic facts of their original plots and characters. sometimes kirk is kind and brilliant and daring in the most breathtaking way possible. sometimes i want to rip off jj abrams’s head. every single one of leonard nimoy’s appearances make me cry.

Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock on the original Star Trek series, died today. Nimoy invented the Vulcan salute himself. He was inspired by the Jewish Priestly Blessing he had seen at an Orthodox synagogue.

I can't believe it's been 10 years already. I came to know of this man way too late. Sharing some art in his memory. ❤️

My favourite thing about Nimoy was his smile and laugh, and his kind and reassuring demeanor. When he spoke about his views on creative work, that is something I can relate to and understand on a personal level. His views on art, spirituality, use of wealth, community work, it all resonates so well. I see him as enlightened to some degree, in touch with life. I look up to him a great deal. ❤️🖖 RIP Leonard.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

Oh, for a Disney that takes risks again. By ‘risks’, I mean here we can simply take the benchmark of the single most inexplicable cold open ever put to film, perhaps. A nuclear explosion prompts the inundation and sinking of a prosperous and alien civilization. The entire thing is presented in a conlang, and we witness some lady get yoinked off the surface of the planet with no explanation to boot. But in cementing this quest, the studio committed itself to doing something unique and original, not drawn from some fairy tale or earlier Disney property. Sure, there’s the whole Plato factor, but I think the distance of a few centuries is reasonable enough. Just chill. Forging a new path under the sea, we are yielded the most unique and also the horniest production yet, replete with svelte ladies and heavy breathing. Even Milo gets to be scrawny ripped with his noodle arms and some modicum of chest definition, to say nothing of his facial bone structure. But that is unimportant compared to what the film can plumb for humor: national stereotypes. Don’t get me wrong, I love an Italian with a matchstick for an unlit cigarette in his mouth and a bizarre French caricature. The strangeness of each moment is partially what makes this stand out. Mock the crew, but also pay homage to the diversity of the silent crew that get killed off in the early stretches of the expedition. Disney was already ahead of the meaningless diversity card in 2001, they deserve credit for that.

The integration of 2D and 3D animation here is interesting, especially in a period when the studio still invested time and effort into a medium they have since abandoned. Vehicles and object of “shock and awe,” for lack of a better term, get that computer assisted boost, their movements glossier and more seamless than those of the humans piloting them. If nothing else, this helps to cement the humanist core of the film and affirm the more optimistic notions about society that the film offers. This is about loss and restoration of identity (albeit through a monarchic society; the Atlanteans were progressive in many ways but one), and demands a special human touch to that.

As glad as I am that this wasn’t a musical, it still would have been a treat to force Leonard Nimoy to sing a ditty of some sort.

final thoughts: i really like it, it’s a lot more action focused than the originals were but still fun to watch. all the little callbacks and references were <3 

kirk and spock already have the LOOK which is lovely to see

seeing leonard nimoy again was heartbreaking :(

only thing i really disliked was how uhura was made into mostly a love interest, they could have played into her knowledge for a lot more than like 2 moments 

now i can finally understand all the edits
