“Stack WISHING SEASON next to BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. Anica Mrose Rissi paints a picture and sings a song with a tremendous, unforgettable voice. As emotionally healing as it is ultimately joyful.” —Rita Williams Garcia, Newbery Honor author of ONE CRAZY SUMMER
“Beautiful and moving, this book will make you cry. But it will also mend your heart. A story that reminds us that love will help see us through, even in the darkest of times.” —Jasmine Warga, Newbery Honor author of OTHER WORDS FOR HOME
“Tender, heart-shifting, and deeply absorbing, Anica Mrose Rissi’s latest novel is a magical exploration of what it means to love and let go. A truly beautiful and profoundly intimate story.” —Corey Ann Haydu, author of EVENTOWN
“With beautiful prose and quiet humor, Anica Mrose Rissi tells a story of grief and loneliness and love and joy, the meandering, maddening mess that is healing from a great loss, and the (kind, awkward, surprising) people who help you through it. A quietly powerful tale that feels like an ageless classic.” —Claire Legrand, author of SOME KIND OF HAPPINESS
"A startlingly honest portrayal of grief, WISHING SEASON carries us through the bewildering beauty of a perfect Maine summer and a season of terrible loss. I loved this wise, lovely, delicate story of what we hold onto and how we let go.” —Laurel Snyder, author of ORPHAN ISLAND

Ten unforgettable short stories -- written by award-winning authors for young adults -- reflect the stunning diversity of experience among teenagers from many countries who make the United States their new home.
It's hard enough to be a teenager, trying to fit in, trying to get along with your parents, trying to figure out how the world works. Being from a different culture makes everything that much harder.
Fleeing from political violence in Venezuela, Amina and her family have settled in the United States. Sarah, adopted, is desperate to know her Korean birth parents. Maya is adapting just fine to life in the U.S. and wishes her strict Kazakh parents would follow suit. Adrian's new friends have some spooky -- and hilarious -- misconceptions about his Romanian origins. Whether they've transitioned from Mexico to the United States or from Palestine to New Mexico, the characters in this anthology have all ventured far and have faced innumerable challenges.
Like the hundreds of immigrants who arrive on U.S. soil every year, each courageous teenager in FIRST CROSSING is unique.

Gone Crazy in Alabama by Rita Williams-Garcia
Tumblr media
Genre: Coretta Scott King Award winner
Targeted Age Group: elementary school age
Summary: Three sisters travel from Brooklyn to rural Alabama for the summer to spend time with their grandma and great-grandmother. During this summer they play, fight, and learn a lot about their extended family dynamics, as well as their own relationships with each other.
Why I chose this book: I chose this book partially because it was available to me as an eBook, and I needed to find a good eBook for this assignment. I was also intrigued by the summary I read online.
Evaluation:
The setting of this book is both important and well described. The story is set in rural Alabama in the late 60s, a time when slavery is gone but racism is far from gone. Three of the main characters are from Brooklyn, and a very different story could have been told about them in their hometown. But because of the Alabama setting, it can be seen more how the South is further behind than the North in terms of equality. The rural setting also creates a different feel, as the city girls get to learn about cows and chickens.
Another defining aspect of this book is the characters. Each and every one has a strong personality and is well described. Even though there are some characters with very little presence in the book (such as the girls' mother), a lot can be learned about who they are from the writing. The author creates believable personalities, as well as believable relationships between the characters. The three sisters argue like all siblings do (and often everyone is in the wrong in one way or another).
I read this book on a kindle, and this was my first experience reading a book on a kindle since my Grandpa gave me his old one very recently. I ended up enjoying this kind of reading a lot more than I thought I would. For one, I love the percentage it shows of how much of the book you have read, as this was a great motivator for me to read quickly. Additionally, I enjoyed being able to lay on my side in a way that is not possible with a regular book. It was also nice to read in bed without a lamp, since the kindle screen is bright enough to be read in the dark (but not so bright to cause eye strain). I will definitely be reading more books on the kindle in the future, now that I have learned it is an option I can enjoy.

2022 Reading
My reading habits for 2022 suggest that this was the year life began to creep back toward normal. For that, I am profoundly grateful.
I read a total of 110 books (I’m not likely to finish 111 before midnight December 31). The vast majority were fiction, and of the novels, most were YA, because that’s my sweet spot. Most were published in 2020 or 2021, with some earlier, and a few current. That’s because most of my reading comes from libraries.
Several years ago, I started tagging books I loved as possible Top Ten books. This year, I refined that further, with Top Twenty and Top Five. Today, I compiled the lists, only to discover I had 12 books in the “Top Ten” list. Try as I might, I could not move them elsewhere. All but one “Top Ten” are YA novels; that one is a picture book. The other lists are much, much shorter.
As I compiled the lists, I noticed was how often the top listings came in groups. One particular library haul in August yielded three Top Tens and one Top Twenty.
And here <drum roll> they are, in reading order, with links to Bookshop.org:
Top Twenty:
1.     Ryan, Tom and Robin Stevenson. When You Get the Chance. Running Kids Press, 2021. Audiobook. (8/16/2022)
2.     Kulper, Kendall. Murder for the Modern Girl. Holiday House, 2022. (8/27/2022)
3.     Emezi, Akwaeke. Bitter. Alfred A. Knopf, 2022. (10/18/2022)
4.     William, Sean. Impossible Music. Blackstone, 2019. Audiobook. (11/23/2022)
Top Ten:
1.     Williams-Garcia, Rita. A Sitting in St. James. Quill Tree—HarperCollins, 2021. (3/3/2022)
2.     Dugan, Jennifer. Verona Comics. Listening Library, 2020. (6/29/2022)
3.     Lo, Malinda. Last Night at the Telegraph Club. Dutton—Penguin Random, 2021. (7/25/2022)
4.     Nedd, Alexis. Don’t Hate the Player. Bloomsbury, 2021. (8/14/2022)
5.     Sharpe, Tess. The Girls I’ve Been. GP Putnam, 2022. Print. (8/25/2022)
6.     Zentner, Jeff. In the Wild Light. Crown Books for Young Readers—Penguin Random House, 2021. (8/30/2022)
7.     Wilson, Kip. The Most Dazzling Girl in Berlin. Versify—HarperCollins, 2022. (8/31/2022)
8.     McBride, Amber. Me (Moth). Feiwel and Sons, 2021. (10/10/2022)
9.     Stoeve, Ray. Arden Grey. Recorded Books, 2022. Audiobook. (10/26/2022)
10.  Gilliland, Raquel Vasquez. How Moon Fuentes Fell in Love with the Universe. Simon & Schuster BYFR, 2021. (11/?/2022)
11.  Price, Tirzah. Pride and Premeditation. 2021; HarperTeen, 2022. (11/26/2022)
12.  Sonderguin, Alfredo. The Capybaras. Greystone Kids, 2021. (Picture book) (11/30/2022)
Top Five:

Winnie-the-Pooh Reads
(explanatory post) The first prompt was, of course, a spell-out of Winnie-the-Pooh.
We Are the Ants/Shaun David Hutchinson-This was a reread while I was sick and a wonderful reread it was. One of my favorite books ever and also the book that introduced me to just really weird fiction.
I Walk in Dread: The Diary of Deliverance Trembley, Witness to the Salem Witch Trials, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1691/Lisa Rowe Fraustino-I picked this up because I was looking for a quick read, but I enjoyed it more than I expected. It was surprisingly insightful at how people join such craziness as happened during the Salem Witch Trials.
Novelets of Science Fiction/ed. Ivan Howard-Loved two stories, was ambivalent to detesting the rest.
The New Mistress at the Chalet School/Elinor M. Brent Dyer-Another reread (this will be a theme). Part of the Chalet School series and probably my favorite one (along with Shocks for the Chalet School). It’s the only one to follow a teacher and not a student and, boy, was it weird to reread this and suddenly be older than the main character.
In Other Lands/Sarah Brennan Rees-Extremely unpopular opinion, but possibly the book I most disliked this year and still read it all through.
The Empire of Gold/S.A. Chakraborty-In stark contrast, one of my favorite books all year. It is the conclusion to the Daevabad trilogy and it takes all of the threads that were woven throughout the books (including the ones that I had by this point forgotten about) and pulls them all together while still adding new things and not just rehashing.
The Tale of Desperaux/Kate DiCamillo-And a drop to the bottom again. I enjoyed this book as a kid but upon rereading it as an adult I was disappointed to see how it treated ‘ugly’ people.
Harbor Me/Jacqueline Woodson-I honestly forgot about this book but that’s not because the book wasn’t good but because it wasn’t the timing that would have it make a deep impact on me. There are definitely kids, though, that this will make an impact one.
Eliza and Her Monsters/Francesca Zappia-I put down this one a few years ago because the timing wasn’t right and I’m so glad I picked it back up. While i don’t think it is a book I’ll reread it was an enjoyable experience that left me with things to think about.
Passport to Russia/Sukey S. Gross-Another reread. I read this first in 1st grade and adored it. Reading it again now I still enjoyed some parts but other parts I can see are messed-up. I won’t be continuing with the series I now know exists.
One Crazy Summer/Rita Williams-Garcia-I enjoyed this one, enough to read the sequel almost right away, not something I usually do. (I dnf’d the sequel but that’s the sequel.)
On the Far Side of the Mountain/Jean Craighead George-Penultimate book on this list and penultimate reread. While I’d never want to live the way the main character in this book does and I don’t particularly like the woods reading this always makes me daydream about the woodland.
Henry Huggins/Beverly Cleary-Not a book I had ever planned to reread, but I am reading all of Beverly Cleary’s books in publication order. Fun, but I was waiting for the girls.
