In honor of Foundations turning one today, I'd like to take everyone on a walkthrough on all the religious symbolism, as well as double meaning behind it.

Spoiler warning: a lot of it can be traced back to Saint Jehanne d'Arc.

Obviously, the entire song wasn't about her, but knowing Gerard and his love for her, it's not too surprising that some of the lyrics match up with St. Joan's story.

So, let's talk about it!

"See the man who stands upon the hill; he dreams of all the battles won. But fate had left its scars upon his face with all the damage they had done."

(I'd like to re-emphasize that while I agree with the more discussed meaning -- you can't wallow in the past forever, no matter how traumatic, as it'll only hurt you more in the end-- I'm looking at the song through a strictly religious lense; and one that focuses on St. Jeanne, specifically.)

Jehanne had witnessed her country be at war with England since she was little.

She was well aware of it, and had even witnessed an Burgundian attack on their village of Domrémy when she was around the age of sixteen.

All through that, she waited for a miracle to save France; but the miracle was her.

The last lyric could also be about her fate as military general, leaving literal scars on her from what the English (and English supporters in France, who I will be grouping with the English for the rest of this essay), had done to her; specifically, shooting her with arrows on two seperate occasions.

"And so, tired with age, he turns the page, let the flesh submit itself to gravity."

"Let our bodies lay; mark our hearts with shame; let our blood in vain; you find God in pain."

Jehanne had her first vision at the age of thirteen, and only began understanding what it meant at the age of sixteen, shortly after Burgundian troops ran amuck; where she fully allowed herself to become one with what the Lord had told her to do by heading to Vaucouleurs -- where her Aunt and Uncle lived -- to convince Sir Robert de Baudricourt to allow her to meet "Gentle Dauphin" (her own nickname for the then-king) Charles, so she may begin her military campaign in Orléans.

She, unfortunately, was turned away for nearly a year before her newfound friends were able to convince him to let her go.

And so, she went to Chinon, performing her first miracle by identifying the Dauphin in disguise within a crowd; Dauphin Charles, soon to be King Charles VII, granted her to go to Orléans where she soon joined generals: La Hire, Gilles de Rais, and Jean de Dunois in the city.

Jeahnne, along with most of her army, believed in God and the Bible; but they are still in the military.

They had to kill others if it meant surviving.

The soldiers are begging God to let them get into heaven, even if it's just in vain. Being pitied by God is a much better fate than an eternity in hell.

The last part though, isn't really about the army, but could still work: those who died on the battlefield die in pain, and then meet God shortly after, as He took their plea for forgiveness, and allowed them into heaven.

However, I like to see it as involving Jehanne.(There will be a lot of references to her death within this post btw.)

Jehanne d'Arc was burned at the stake at the age of nineteen for witchcraft, heresy, and so much more.

Her last (audible) words were in the form of a prayer, calling out for Jesus Christ. In the face of death, and admist her pain, she had "found" the both of them in the end.

"Now, if your convictions were a passing phase, may your ashes feed the river in the morning rays. And as the vermin crawls, we lay in the foundations of decay."

Jehanne wasn't considered a witch for very long, only a few years after her death was she called a martyr by the Catholic church.

The convictions she faced in court were a literal passing phase.

Not only that, but she was burned at the stake; her body turning into ash after three times, which the English disposed of by throwing her remains in the Seine river.

The people who murdered her were still alive, acting as though they didn't kill an innocent teenager for nothing.

Jehanne's family, on the other hand, were too focused on her death to continue the fight like she would've wanted.

Her brothers, Pierre and Jean, even went as far as latching onto a woman who claimed to be Joan, even though the real Joan was long dead by then.

"He was there the day the towers fell, and so he wandered down the road. And we would all build towers of our own, only to watch the roots corrode."

Throughout her travels as an army general, she became close with King Charles VII, who even ennobled her, and her family.

Her main goal was to protect him, and escort him to safety so he could be crowned the new king of France.

Her single motive was to protect her country, and yet, it was her country who betrayed her in the end.

Once she was captured, the Duke of Burgundy sold her to the English, where she was put on trial and ultimately killed.

Charles VII did nothing to help her in the end either, as he wanted to make amends with England, so Jehanne was alone fending for herself where she was assaulted and subjected to mental (and near physical) torture.

"But it's much too late, you're in the race. So we'll press and press 'til you can't take it anymore."

But even then, Jehanne was persistent. She attempted to escape the prison multiple times – once by jumping out of her 21-foot tall tower and living – but ultimately failed. (Which was something that was used against her faith in court.)

She was also supposed to be guarded by women of the church, but instead was "guarded" by Englishmen; who allowed a well-respected English Lord to sexually assault her. She fought back, and he eventually left before it could escalate.

Jehanne was always more comfortable around women; when given the chance, she'd prefer sleeping next to women than men-- but she did have few men she was comfortable around.

Even after she had initially signed a paper saying she was to not discuss her visions or crossdress while living out the rest of her life in prison, the men who held her trial were quickly called to come back to the prison, where they found her dressed in men's clothing once again; so she was put to death.

She did say that she would've gladly worn dresses if it meant she could attend mass (which she hadn't been able to see), but the fact she was forced into a prison with only men more than likely had something else to do with it.

"Let our bodies lay; mark our hearts with shame; let our blood in vain; you find God in pain."

"And if, by his own hand, his spirit flies, take his body as a relic to be canonized. Now, and so he gets to die a saint but she will always be a whore."

This one is more metaphorical. Because obviously, the only one in that courtroom to be canonized was Jehanne, meanwhile, no one even knows her murderers names; unless you're super into the case of Jehanne d'Arc.

But at the time, the English and French kings were seen as heroes; in their lifetimes, for the most part, they were seen as the good guys, while Jehanne was seen as a heretic.

"Against faith! (Cage all the animals!)"

Many of her murderers claimed to care about her, and they just wanted the best for her, ehen in reality, the English caged her and her brothers in seperate cells, who they deemed to be a danger.

By imprisioning, and ignoring everything Jehanne said about her visions, the church was going against their own faith in God.

"Against all life! ('Cause the message must be pure!)"

The English and the Church putting her to death is one of the huge things that God should be against; killing people. Obviously. (It's kinda funny imo that whenever someone murdered someone in the Bible their punishment was...also.. to be murdered? But oh well.)

Especially those who have a direct order from Him to fulfill a task; anyone who gets in the way of that task will not have a pretty fate.

The only reason why so many people went along with her execution was because they marketed it as being a good deed– "it's okay if we do this because we won't have to worry about losing this war anymore."

"Against change! (You can wander through the ruins!)"

One of the main reasons Jehanne was killed was because she wore mens clothing, which goes against the Bible.

However, the church failed to mention that the Bible states crossdressing is okay, under certain circumstances; which Jehanne fell into.

She was still murdered for her religious beliefs, and for her ideals in general, but the main reason was because she wore armor in order to protect herself from battle, as well as from the men she was leading.

"We are plagued! (But the poison is the cure!"

Jehanne d'Arc was both the poison and the cure.

The poison against the English, as her persistance was something that both sides hadn't seen throughout the entire war.

And she was the cure for the French for the same reason.

The plague, on the other hand, was the war itself.

Any form of plague is known to last for a long amount of time, sometimes, without having a way to fight it for even longer.

This is the same case here.

It took ninety-two years for Jehanne to, basically, pick France up from its bootstraps and start to cause serious damage to the English.

"You must fix your heart."

As stated previously, Jehanne wasn't supposed to be put to death originally.

She had signed a paper that said she would not continue to speak about the voices she heard, and she would go to prison for the rest of her life.

That was considered a moment of weakness for Jehanne, as only a few days later, she was back in her armor and stated she had another vision from the same saints as before.

I see this as St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Margaret of Antioch, and St. Michael The Archangel during that time telling her that it'll be okay as long as she still has full faith in the Lord; which she did.

Those Saints were there to guide her, which also meant being herself and doing the thing everyone hated her for.

"And you must build an altar where it swells."

As she waited for news about what was to come, Jehanne still prayed, and found ways to worship God despite her situation.

As tensions only continued to rise, she never lost her faith.

"When the storm it gains, and the sky it rains, let it flood, let it flood; let it wash away."

Again, I see this at those Saints during that vision telling her to allow that fear to take over for a short period of time, as it will help her become stronger in the end.

"And as we stumble through your last crusade, will you welcome your extincion in the morning rays?"

"And as the swarm it calls we lay in the foundations–"

Jehanne's last battle was getting to that stake.

With a mirtire listing off her convictions, she was lead and tied to the wooden stake in the middle of Rouen, where Bishop Pierre Cauchon began his homily. She was fairly calm up until her address, where she broke down.

She knew that soon, she would meet those who guided her through her journey, and she welcomed everyone with open arms through her fear.

The "swarm" here is Archangel Michael, Catherine of Alexandria, Margaret of Antioch, and God Himself calling out to her as she burned.

They all led her through those battles, and in her death, finally were able to accept her as one of their own.

"Yes, it comforts me much more. Yes, it comforts me much more. To lay in the foundations of decay."

Again, personally, I see this as Jehanne's brothers finding comfort in thinking their sister is still alive, even though they know she isn't.

They were both captured alongside her, and yet, they like living in ignorance instead of facing that harsh reality.

"Get! Up! Coward!"

This time, it isn't any of the Saints Jehanne saw telling her to keep going.

I see it as Jehanne herself telling the people (more than likely, her brothers) she led to get up and continue fighting; they almost won, they were so close.

So, they did.

"I believe firmly what my Voices have told me, that I shall be saved; I believe it as firmly as if I were already there." -Saint Joan Of Arc.

The French continued fighting until Bordeaux surrendered, marking the French victory, which was won only twenty-two years after Jehanne's execution.

Not only that, but her prediction on what would occur seven years after her trial came true: King Charles VII created the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges, which means that no trial can be held without the authority of the Pope.

Meaning, Jehanne's trial couldn't have been held unless the Pope wanted it to happen. She had requested that the Pope at the time be contacted about her trial, but was denied because of how long it would've taken.

She would've been forty-one at the time the French came out victorious.

Wrath Group and Jeanne D'arc

Wrath Fam Posting never ends, because I like them and thank you all so much for encouraging that 💕

idk what it is about this group that keeps drawing me back to them. Maybe it's because Norse mythology is one of my special interests, maybe it's because the story of Wrath arc moved me so much, maybe I'm just gay as hell. Who knows, who cares, they make me happy, and I'm glad I get to share that joy with all of you~

--Alright enough sappiness, down to business

As the title of the post says, this is going to focus on the ways Strike uses references to Jeanne D'arc as a character motif for the Wrath group, which I consider to consist of Freya, Gil, Ray, and of course, Iduna.

First up, Freya. This one's super easy. We all know Jeanne was executed under false charges of heresy, but the thing that did her in, the one accusation the English levied at her that somehow stuck was... Cross dressing. Now, Freya as we see her is a very feminine woman, but her battle outfit when paired with Iduna is undoubtedly a military uniform, and canon shows us that it was quite common for Freya to be wandering around battlefields, picking up subclass as she pleased.

The "men's clothing" Jeanne wore was armor, and her short haircut she had throughout her military career was for the sake of convenience, not because she was attempting to dress as a man. (@redlanternchild also makes note of this in her post here! Very reassuring that I am not, in fact, an insane person ww. I love her analysis in general so please give her blog a look through if you haven't already; It's super duper worth it!)

It's also a common misconception that Jeanne was executed as a witch, one that might be due to how she was depicted in Shakespeare's Henry IV part 1, where, spurred on by common English propaganda at the time of writing, she was portrayed as a witch and a promiscuous woman (This makes Freya's one-sided adoration for her baby brother rather... bitter, in a funny way). And, well... Gear went and rescued Freya from a witch trial, so. There ya go.

Second comes Freya's subclass, Gilberto Weasel and Rayscent Crazyrabbit, aka, Gil and Ray!

Using Italian pronunciation of Gil's name would make it sound closer to "Jill," while Ray, is, well, Ray! Put em together, and you've got something remarkably close to Jeanne's compatriot and the commander of the French army, Gilles de Rais!

Now for birthdays. Birthdays for characters in Servamp are NEVER chosen Just Because, and Freya's subclass are no exception.

Gil's birthday is February 12th, which also falls on the day the Battle of Herrings started, allll the way back in 1429. It's a really minor battle within the Hundred Years War, but, it was the date Jeanne met with Robert de Baudricourt and ended up, ahem, convinced to help her. It's actually really funny; she basically cornered the dude and then proceeded to publicly lecture everyone present until he relented. This is significant because Jeanne's encounter with Baudricourt is considered by historians to be her first major step towards her career and fame, much like Iduna's first meeting with Gil was what pushed her to really think about what she was creating, who for, and why.

Now, time for Ray! Ray's birthday is May 15th, which just so happens to coincide with the day Gilles de Rais kidnapped a cleric during a dispute at the Church of Saint-Étienne-de-Mer-Morte. This ultimately prompted an investigation by the Bishop of Nantes, during which evidence of Rais's crimes as the infamous "Bluebeard" was uncovered. ... Basically he murdered and did Other Things to a bunch of kids but let's just move past that, ayup.

Finally, we have the Star (lol) of our show... Iduna! She's the most obvious of the bunch with her connections, to the point that I almost feel silly bringing it up? But I also realize that people genuinely might not realize some of these because it just never came up in their lives before.

First, Jeanne's nickname was the Maid of Orléans, and she wasn’t just a flag bearer who rallied the troops. She also carried a sword into battle, a fact that for whatever reason is often left out when discussing her accomplishments. Iduna's combo with Freya is literally named "Maid of Orléans (Draw your sword)", and its effect is to give Freya the weapon she is lacking to become a perfect bastion of offense and defense. I'd have to be a total idiot to miss that given that even FGO, which, as I mentioned in a different post about Freya, plays it VERY fast and loose with history, gets this right, and how popular Jeanne D’arc is as a person to take inspiration from for fictional characters.

(side note, but i wonder if the design of Freya's demon was inspired somewhat by Fate Extra CCC's Karna? Strike's definitely a Fate fan and has even drawn Ildio in Gilgamesh cosplay, so it's entirely possible considering she loves to sprinkle in homages to series she likes within character design)

Second, and I've mentioned it in a previous post, Iduna's birthday, May 30th, is also the day Jeanne died at the hands of the English.

Jeanne was also only 17 the day she first rode into battle, just like Iduna! She's also the patron saint of prisoners (of which C3 was keeping the subclass as, and they were freed and safely guided out of the collapse thanks to Iduna intervening with the battle between Shamrock and Shuuhei) and soldiers, especially female soldiers like Freya. However, she's much more well known for being the patron saint of France ww

Finally, there’s one of the charges leveled at Jeanne during her trial. While she was captured by the Burgundians, there was an incident where she jumped from a 21 meter(!!) tall tower, and she safely landed on the ground despite the height (but was quickly recaptured). Now the reason for this seems to have conflicting sources, and I… Do not speak French |D

Some say she was merely attempting to escape, others insist that she did so to save a nearby village. Point being, she leapt, survived, was captured, and maybe did so for not her own sake, but for others.

Anybody remember the end of chapter 106 and the entirety of chapter 107? Iduna, using a new invention, leaps from the window of the hospital (much to Gil and Ray’s distress lol) in order to more immediately tend to the injured Nicco, and her kindness is met with being taken hostage. I just thought this one was a funny little coincidence and probably not intentional, so take it as you like~

If Joan did not own a horse until she received one from Robert de Baudricourt at Vaucouleurs; if she did not have a sword until she received one also from Baudricourt or even later sent for the one which was hidden in the monastery of Saint-Catherine-de-Fierbois; if she had never worn armor, until she first tried on the suit which Charles, the dauphin, ordered to be made for her; and if she had never ridden under any standard, let alone hers, when did she become a soldier or, even better, a military leader? For that is what Joan was destined to be; that is why the dauphin had her tested and approved by so many at Chinon, Poitiers, and Tours. The rather convoluted question can be answered quite simply in two ways. The first is to stand on a historical soapbox and exclaim that a horse, sword, armor, or standard were not necessary to make someone in the late Middle Ages a soldier, let alone a military leader, just as having those items did not automatically improve one's military skill or legitimize one's generalship. Indeed, during the Hundred Years War especially, it was being discovered that many were not made military leaders simply by their noble birth. Far more often, the good generals on all sides — English, French, and Burgundian — rose from obscurity to greatness because they had a natural ability to lead men, formulate strategy and tactics, and, perhaps most importantly, stay alive when others around them were being killed. They also had to have confidence in their abilities, for if they appeared to doubt what they were asking others to do, their leadership was moot; no soldiers would follow them for long. This was more important even than winning (although numerous victories also obviously helped) in leading men into battle or at sieges during the last two centuries of the Middle Ages.

1. The Life and Death of Joan of Arc: A Brief History

During the plight of The Hundred Years War, Joan of Arc (b. 1412) was raised by her family, on their farm in the isolated village of Domrémy (Wilken, 2009). The war, which entered its third phase when Joan was nearly a year old, saw both King Henry V of England’s invasion into France, and the ending of the Great Schism of the Roman Catholic church. Although there is not much known about Joan before February 1428, it is assured that during her undocumented lifetime, political tensions were high, and the people of France were uncertain of their future (Neillands, 2001).

At the age of 13, Joan claims she received her first vision from God. These visions, which included images of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, communicated a mission for her. Joan was shown herself leading the charge to remove the English from occupied France, and accompanying Charles VII (the French heir) to his inauguration in Riems, France (Wilken, 2009). These visions, which would come to Joan in both auditory and visual formats, would often last for several minutes and continue throughout her life (Nicastro & Picard, 2016).

In 1428, at the age of 16, Joan left her home with a relative, and traveled to her local military base. Here she encounters Robert de Baudricourt, and informs him of her visions from God. She requested to speak to Charles VII, so she can tell him of her visions and reclaim France. Unsurprisingly, Joan is mocked, turned away, and told to return home (Wilken, 2009). However she persisted, and after a few months of telling prophecies that came true to the commander, and rumours of her loudly scolding him about his lack of faith, she was taken to see Charles VII in Chinon (Wilken, 2009)(TheUntoldPast, 2021).

Charles VII agrees to meet with Joan on March 7th, 1429 (or somewhere around that date, as it is still unconfirmed). He subjected Joan to a a set of testing pertaining to her visions, and after passing his tests, he believed her (Wilken, 2009). He agrees to help Joan with her mission, and allows Joan to stay there while they continue to strategize. After a few months, Joan was allowed by Charles VII to enter the battlefield (Neillands, 2001).

At the time, the heart of the battle was being had in Orléans (Southey, 1806). Although they had been fighting there for six months, and were on the verge of defeat, Joan’s arrival changed the course of the war. Nine days following her arrival, France broke through and retook the city. By July of that year, Joan had helped the French army take back Troyes, Paris, and Reims. And in less than three months since her arrival, Charles VII had been crowned king (Southey, 1806)(Wilken, 2009).

Although France was winning and regaining territory, Joan was captured and given over to the English in 1430. She was publicly called a heretic by English priests, and was put on trial for her crimes against God (Wilken, 2009). This resulted in twelve charges being brought against her. The charges, which were put into three distinct categories, were on the basis of diabolical influence, blasphemy/irreverence, and unorthodox presentation of religious devotion. There was a large focus on her desire to present masculinely, and refusal of women’s dress. They also focused heavily on Joan’s interpretation of the saints who had spoken to her, and believed that she did not have sufficient evidence to support her mysticism (Dolgin, 1951).

It was clear that the capture and trial of Joan was not only because of England's belief of her being a heretic, but also because they saw her as a threat. The purpose for her trial was not only to kill the French revolutionist, but to also mitigate her followers. The trial was meant to publicly embarrass her, discredit her character and message. However, because Joan was able to out-speak the lawyer who represented the Church, the latter half of the trial was held in private. England was once again concerned with her ability to persuade and captivate the people around her, so they ultimately sentenced her to death (Dolgin, 1951).

Joan was tried for her crimes, and burned at the stake on the 30th of May in 1431, at the age of nineteen. Clutching a wooden cross, Joan was burned surrounded by 10,000 English soldiers. Accounts of her death state that she continued to say “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus” as she burned (Wilken, 2009). Although she died upon the initial burning, some accounts claimed that they were unable to burn some of her organs (most accounts claim that they were unable to burn her heart). This resulted in the English burning her body twice more, to ensure that her body was reduced solely to ash, which would be spread in the local river (Dolgin, 1951).

2. The Legacy of Joan After Death and Before Canonization: A Brief Exploration into Failure

There was some success in the smear campaign against Joan of Arc, as for-telling by the length between her death and her canonization. Although she died in 1431, Joan was not beatified until 1909, and wasn’t canonized until 1920. Possible reasons for the length between her death and canonization is three-fold, with the first two specifically related to her public perception following death.

The first reason was due to her crimes sentenced by the English church. Although she was later acquitted of these charges, and given the title of Martyr in 1456, there was concern about her canonization by the Vatican. This is evident in the rumours, that even though it had been nearly 500 years, Pope Benedict XV asked Queen Victoria (the sitting monarch of England during that time) permission to beatify her (Dolgin, 1951).

A second possible reason is due to the misogyny in the Catholic church, and Joan’s gender expression. Although she was considered a holy transvestite, the title was still accompanied with shame. There were several rumours of her lack of purity, and lots of confusion and disdain from the Catholic church because of her refusal to wear feminine dress. As well, regardless of gender expression, by being born female, Joan was less likely to become a saint due to the Churches reluctance to pursue the causes of female saints (Dolgin, 1951).

The final possible reason was rooted in history. Following the One Hundred Year war, Joan was officially recognized as a martyr. Previously, all martyrs of the faith were declared saints. However, in 1243, under Pope Gregory XI, the canonization process became centralized. Though, with the Great Schism happening around the time of Joan’s death, there is a possibility that local French Churches were uncertain about how saints were going forward (Smith, 1970). So although not an official saint in Rome, Joan was often considered a saint by the French, and several people observed her feast day before her canonization (Dolgin, 1951).

So up to this point, Joan is not officially seen as a saint, and there is not much of a push to make her one. Several people in her community considered her a saint, and celebrated her feast day accordingly. Following her being declared innocent, Joan’s family was never heard from again (Wilken, 2009). During the French Revolution, Joan became unpopular in France, and several of her relics were destroyed. Meaning that until the mid 1800s, Joan's cult was unsuccessful (Sexsmith, 1990).

here is the tenth chapter!

to clarify again, I’m not very good at japanese so if anything is wrong or weirdly translated everything is on me.

of course there is going to be some spoilers so do not read if you don’t wish to know jean’s story yet.

*also little bonus at the end about Jeanne d’Arc real story! of course you don’t have to read it to understand his route in the game but it’s very interesting :)*

The Count tells MC the history of the war between France and England, also known as the Hundred Years’ War...

【 Comte 】 Jean was a soldier who led the French army during the Hundred Years War.

Jean fights for his country, France and defeats the English army. Jean d’Arc, soon after the defeat of the enemy, becomes a true hero for his people.

However, such glory won’t last for Jean :( 'The most tragic end of the world's heroes', as they say.

In the course of the battle, Jean was captured as a prisoner of war by the enemy. The King didn’t want to help him for some reason. 😡

And of course... 🙄

【 Comte 】 Jean was convicted of heresy and it has been decided that he would be sentenced to fire.

After Jean's death, the king ordered a re-examination of his treason and found him to be innocent, and he went down as a hero of France.

The fact that Jean never knew went down as a hero after his death and this won’t change the fact that he died as an innocent. The protagonist is angry because it doesn't make any sense.

From the bottom of my stomach, I feel a mixture of anger and frustration.

Here, the MC asks the Count a question. “Why did he bring him back to life after such a death?”

There's something different about the Count returning the great men of the mansion and Jean.

The MC wonders if Jean really wanted the Count to bring him back to life. Before the Count can answer, Jean appears, interrupts him, takes the MC by the arm and leads her away.

【 Jean 】 One look at this man's face is enough. I don't like it. Let's go, woman.

As soon as they arrived in the library, Jean seems to have calmed down a little lets go of the MC's arm.

The protagonist apologises for trying to find out about his past without his permission, but Jean says that's okay. Jean says it's okay, because his life has been written about in books anyway. However, he says that he doesn't want the Count to tell her about it.

【 Jean 】 ...It's not enough to say I hate it, it's too much.

Jean says that he is not a hero and that he is no different from the children's book he used to read, The Ugly Duckling.

it hurts me so much that this is the way he perceives himself when he deserves all the love in the world </3

Jean's gaze fell on the book 'The Ugly Duckling', which was still on the table.

here is some real background info about the real Jeanne d’Arc! She is such a brave and interesting historical figure. The epitome of a real badass, fearless and powerful woman.

so, the hundred years' war, if we summarize as much as possible is a series of armed conflicts that began in 1337. which opposes the kingdom of france and the kingdom of england.

in 1328 at the death of king charles iv, the question arises as to who will inherit the french crown.

one then has the choice between the cousin of the preceding king philippe de valois and edward iii the king of england who by his mother isabelle is also a descendant of the french throne.

you can imagine putting an english king on the french throne, wasn’t seen very well.

edward not happy, which led to a succession crisis, which lead to the hundred years' war.

obviously this conflict, quickly overcomes a simple succession crisis.

it's a mess.

what you have to remember, is that the english are gradually invading part of the kingdom of france.

in 1415, after the battle of azincourt and the english victory, the english king henry v controls much of the north of the kingdom of france, including paris for that matter.

but it is far from being the only concern.

what you have to keep in mind is that the king of france at the time, charles vi, is reached at rather regular intervals of madness.

this obviously prevents him from administering the kingdom properly.

as a result, in parallel with the conflict with the english, a real civil war breaks out.

to find out who between his son the heir charles and his cousin the duke of burgundy will be able to take back the reins of the kingdom; the duke of burgundy is supported by the burgundians who will end up allying themselves with the english and the son of the king the heir charles is supported by the armagnacs.

but during this time, charles is betrayed by his own father who disinherits his son and after his death, gives the crown to the english.

i warned you that it was really messy.

and it is in this incredible mess that our jeanne arrives.

and where exactly does jeanne come from? from domremy.

she is also often called the virgin of orleans.

she is associated with the city of reims, but jeanne was originally born in domremy.

and where exactly is this place? domremy is this little town to the west of the city of the vosges department, on the banks of the meuse river.

isn't it pretty?

this is jeanne's birth house,

she would have been born around 1412. the building classified as a historical monument since 1840 includes in addition to a cellar, three large rooms originally used to house the whole family, her parents and four siblings.

according to jeanne's trial, it is here that she would have learned to sew or weave which were two occupations of the young girls of the time.

her father was a ploughman, so she often had to look after the animals.

and since she is very pious she spent a lot of time praying.

she went on pilgrimage at least once a week, for example in the notre dame de bermont chapel, about three kilometres (as the crow flies) from her birth house.

and jeanne d’arc, as you may have guessed, wasn't always called jeanne d’arc.

no, in history she has had different names and official nicknames.

there are of course the best known ones: the virgin of orleans, jeanne the virgin or even just the virgin and in the vicinity of domremy she was also called the jeannette de rommée, in connection with her mother's name. she has even signed several letters with the name jehanne.

and it's even more complicated if you're interested in her surname “d'arc”.

which was originally written darc, without the apostrophe. here again there have been many variations, and i'll mention a few of them: tarc, dars, darx and even d'ailly or daly according to the phonetic transcription of her name, with a lorraine accent. from there we move on to duly, then du lys.

when the king ennobled jeanne and her family, it is written on the deed, la dame du lys in reference to the royal coat of arms.

this is the magnificent bois-chenu basilica, which was built between 1880 and 1940 in honour of jeanne.

and for the record, this incredible basilica was sometimes considered to be the place where jeanne would have heard voices.

however if we refer to the trial, it is in her father's garden, near the house, that jeanne would have started hearing voices, celestial calls, coming from saint catherine of st. margaret's and the archangel saint michael.

the divine mission entrusted to her was very “simple”.

she was only commanded to be a cavalier, to cross a kingdom occupied by the english to go and find the future charles vii and convince him that she is the one sent from heaven.

to help him to take his place on the throne by her coronation in reims.

to show him how to liberate the kingdom of france, of the english presence.

it seems to be an easy enough mission for me. 😅 (nope)

so obviously you can imagine that the people didn't take her seriously right away. it took a few years before she managed to convince the world that she wasn't completely crazy.

- jeanne?

- yes?

- this is the voice.

- is someone talking to me?

- you are the chosen one, jeanne, join me.

- yes, i'm coming.

- i hope you like human barbecue. (ok i'll stop :/)

how is the legend of jeanne forged? how does one go from being a peasant girl eager to help, to jeanne of arc, heroine of the kingdom of france?

this is le centre d’interprétation (the interpretation centre), which is just behind jeanne of arc's birth house and retraces her youth and adventures.

her journey is incredible, at 17 years old, jeanne can't stand not doing anything anymore, she has been hearing voices urging her to act for four years now.

so she decides to return to the châtellenie de vaucouleurs, to meet captain robert de baudricourt, one of the king's faithful followers and after several vicissitudes, she manages to convince him. it wasn't easy, i remind you that her main point was that she hears voices. but yeah, he finally agrees to send her with an escort, join the heirn in chinon.

the journey is quite long and above all risky, we are talking about more than 500 kilometres and in this period of turmoil, the dangers were quite present especially if you look at the map, one realizes that the small expedition crosses areas not controlled by the enemy coalition.

fortunately, everything went well for jeanne, who arrives at her destination on march 1429 and gets an audience with the heir two days later. he was quite suspicious of this young woman at first, who claims to hear divine voices but according to the story she made a revelation to him that we don't know which eventually convinced him.

for the entourage of the suitor of the throne, it's not that simple and you can understand them, betting on jeanne is a little bit like a poker game. so they insist that she will be given a few interrogations, she is questioned about her life, about her morals and finally confidence is established, she is equipped with military equipment. she then undergoes mini combat trainings and here we go, her dream is about to come true, she joins a supply convoy in blois and on april 22nd, with more than 4000 men, she is headed for orléans.

the arrival of jeanne of arc changes many things.

her faith, her confidence in victory gives hope to the soldiers and to the inhabitants, who are filled with new energy. they manage to win in less than 10 days, 10 days and the english are obliged to give up their plan, which consisted of taking the city and then attacking the south of the loire.

jeanne who comes out of this battle with this image as a victorious, ultra badass woman and just earned her nickname... la pucelle d'orléans (the virgin of orleans).

thanks to her victory in orleans, jeanne thus becomes a kind of national heroine. she represents by her fame and her qualities, a not insignificant asset for the heir in his fight against the english and the burgundians.

but what makes a real difference is less her qualities as a war strategist and more her ability to charm and to galvanise the troops and the inhabitants along the way.

it's quite simple, before jeanne's arrival, the english had a reputation for never losing their invincibility.

and jeanne achieves the feat of restoring confidence in a possible victory.

it gives the impression to the troops that they are going to receive a kind of divine help and it changes everything in the soldiers' minds, all the more so because before her arrival there was a prophecy, who said that a virgin would help defeat the english so when jeanne arrives, everyone thought "it's ok, we're saved"!

jeanne persuades the future king to start a ride to reims who is in the middle of enemy territory, to be crowned.

jeanne thus succeeded in carrying out one of the following missions which were supposedly entrusted to her by the voices she hears; in other words, since she has succeeded, she is necessarily an envoy of god, and that for the mood of the troops, it makes a huge difference.

unfortunately after the time of victories comes the time of defeats.

after the coronation, the king and jeanne no longer really agree. she is convinced that her mission is to keep the english out of france.

the king, for his part, is longing for a little rest.

for example, he does not feel at all capable of taking back paris, while jeanne, a little bit stubborn, goes there anyway and suffers a failure.

on top of that she is wounded, she gets a crossbow arrow in her thigh, moreover, she breaks her sword which had for all victories...

it's a bad sign.

some people think that the virgin is abandoned by god. some time later jeanne went to compiègne, a city besieged by the burgundians and by some english contingents and once again it goes wrong, she is taken prisoner in may 1430, by the burgundians.

she tried to escape, but all her attempts failed and in november of the same year, she was sold to the english. jeanne is then taken to the castle of rouen, where members of the church judge her for heresy.

the trial was to say that charles vii was crowned thanks to a witch, she is also blamed for everything and anything, for dressing in men's clothing,

for deferring directly to god's judgement without going through the church, for hearing the voices of demons and not of saints.

jeanne really plays her life on each of her answers, in addition, she faces accusers totally committed to the english cause on her own when she was only 19 years old.

moreover, the witnesses are obviously not chosen at random, everyone who could speak up for jeanne is under pressure. everything is being done to ensure that she is condemned. finally, she ends up at the stake, on the market square, and we make sure there's nothing left of her body, to prevent it from being turned into holy relics.

and then after the end of the hundred years' war, i.e. almost 25 years later, the church reverses this first court decision. king charles vii wants to wash away the insult that was done to him through this trial and he pushes jeanne's family to ask for a review. pope calixtus iii agreed and jeanne was rehabilitated in 1456. the investigations carried out are more serious, many of jeanne's contemporaries jostle to plead in her favour and even people who had once spoken badly of her finally return to saying good things about her.

the first judgement is broken and the young woman's memory is rehabilitated.

an unusual little fact in the end - many people have not been able to admit that the story of the virgin ends up on a pyre. for them it was impossible, this story was too beautiful, this too extraordinary woman.

and it went far enough that people found stories of women, who a few years later claimed to be the real jeanne.

just imagine them saying stuff like "oh yeah, yeah it's me i didn't burn at all, my face has changed a little bit but it's me, i assure you, believe me, really".

a certain claude des armoises is said to have pretended to be her, in the metz region. after having acquired a certain renown, having been given gifts by former relatives of jeanne; she even went so far as to meet two of the virgin's brothers, who (hold on because it's completely insane) believed her.

they really believed it was their own sister who had died at the stake.

it's a crazy story!

well, we don't really know if they really believed it, or if one pretends to believe it for financial reasons for example.

in any case, this woman, who was talked about everywhere, is unmasked by the king himself, so that this fraud can be stopped.

in the end, i find this story quite unusual.

About PSP Jeanne d’Arc ’s historical references

You know, Jeanne d’Arc for PSP is a funny game: while clearly not being very historically accurate (orcs and magical armlets in the Hundred Years’ War? Huh, they don’t tell you about things like that on History lessons), it still contains some interesting nods to history, some of which are quite obscure. I’ve collected some of them, mostly about historical figures and some events that I consider to be most interesting. This is going to be a long post, and there will be some spoilers, but I’ll put a warning so you could skip that part if you haven’t played the whole game yet. Oh, and sorry for any mistakes – I’m not a native speaker, so I hope there won’t be too many of them. I tried my best :P

[Note: I kept referring to her as Jeanne d’Arc here, although, as far as I understand, it is more common to call her Joan of Arc in English. I’ll leave it as it is, if you don’t mind ^^’]

Okay, I think I’ll start with the characters. There are quite a lot of characters who were based off real people: aside from the most obvious ones (Jeanne d’Arc, Gilles de Rais, Henry VI, Charles VII and some others), we have the following (I tried to find some paintings and pictures where possible):

Jean and Bertrand are based off Jean de Metz and Bertrand de Poulengy, who were Jeanne’s trusted allies during the Hundred Years’ War. They both had great respect for Jeanne and escorted her on her journey to the dauphin.

Colet’s prototype is most likely Colet de Vienne, a royal messenger who also escorted Jeanne d’Arc on her way to Chinon. Little is known about him, other than that he was accompanied by an archer named Richard – probably a prototype for Marcel. I guess they changed his name so he won’t be confused with the other Richard, who is also a playable character. By the way, it seems that the name ‘Marcel’ means “little warrior” in French, so if game developers chose that name intentionally (and I think they did), that’s a very nice little touch!

Étienne de Vignolles, more known as La Hire, was among France’s best commanders and was one of Jeanne d’Arc’s most trusted allies. Described as quite an arrogant man, he was a fearsome warrior and fought alongside Jeanne at Orleans and during the Battle of Patay. You can also find this prayer of his: “God, I pray Thee that today Thou wilt do for La Hire that which Thou wouldst have La Hire do for Thee, if he were God and Thou wert La Hire.” – perhaps, much like his in-game version, he did have a habit of talking about himself in the third person.

Richard was probably based off Brother Richard, a Franciscan monk who knew Jeanne. I couldn’t find any other information about him, though, except for this design for an opera.

The next one is a bit of a stretch, to be honest. It seems Bartolomeo does have a historical prototype, but it’s not clear who it was; he may or may not be based off Bartolomeo d'Alviano, an Italian captain who fought on the side of Spain against France. He didn’t have much to do with the Hundred Years’ War, though; moreover, he was born after Jeanne was burned at the stake.

Robert de Baudricourt was a captain of the royal garrison at Vaucouleurs. When Jeanne d’Arc came to him, saying she has a mission from God and asking for assistance, he was very skeptical at first, but since Jeanne was very persistent, he eventually provided her an escort to visit the Dauphin. The game didn’t change it much.

John Talbot was an English military commander known as “English Achilles” for his bravery. Despite being one of the most feared warriors, he was respected so much that when he was captured, Charles VII released him without asking for ransom.

Sir William Glasdale was an English captain who commanded the troops in the fort Les Tourelles. Jeanne d’Arc wrote a letter to him, pleading him to lift the siege of the fort, but he refused to do so, and Jeanne’s troops started the assault to take Les Tourelles back. During the assault, Glasdale fell into the Loire River and drowned, as his armor was too heavy.

Both Georges de La Trémoille and Arthur de Richemont were indeed Charles’s trusted servants. Georges also survived an attempt of assassination – as described, “thanks to his obesity”, and, as you can see in the game, the developers had that part in their heads, as well. :) Here’s a picture of Arthur de Richemont, I couldn’t find any paintings of real life Georges de La Trémoille, but I’ll add a picture of his in-game version a bit later.

There’s an interesting detail about Charles VII himself: have you ever looked at his in-game portrait and thought: “Man, they didn’t have to draw him such a big nose”? Well, that’s probably because real Charles VII was actually described as a man with a big nose! That’s another “well done” to the game developers.

As for Bedford – his actual name was John of Lancaster, ‘The Duke of Bedford’ was only his title. I don’t know, maybe that’s obvious, but I spent a good part of walkthrough thinking Bedford was his name. His real name not being mentioned and all the other characters calling him just “Bedford” certainly didn’t help. :P

All right, now I’m going to dive into some historical events and characters’ relationships that might spoil some events of the game for you. Please, go to the “SPOILERS END” mark if you haven’t finished the game yet and want to see everything for yourself.

SPOILERS

Okay, first of all, the game heavily implies Charles VII had a difficult relationship with his mother, Isabeau of Bavaria. Real life Isabeau of Bavaria claimed that Charles VII wasn’t the trueborn son of Charles VI, thus couldn’t be the rightful king of France, so I doubt the queen loved her son very much. The game tries to explain it with the demonic possession of Isabeau – still, her last words before she was (presumably) killed by Henry VI/Gilvaroth were confusing and quite out-of-nowhere to me.

Georges de La Trémoille disliked Jeanne d’Arc and, as some historians believe, was involved in a plot against her that ultimately led to her death – both in real life and the game. Of course, we all remember that in the game it wasn’t Jeanne who ended up at the stake…

The Battle of Patay (June, 1489) was one of Jeanne d’Arc’s greatest victories during the Hundred Years’ war. In this battle, the feared “Terror of French” John Talbot was finally captured. I’m not sure if this one was intended or not, but this stage in the game is the last time you see Talbot – well, not until he suddenly reappears late in the game, only to help you and never to be seen again.

Do you remember the part where Liane went overwhelmed with her great power and responsibility (hehe) and tried to recapture Paris by herself? Real Jeanne d’Arc also tried to break the siege of Paris, but the attempt failed and she and her troops were ordered to withdraw. After that, the nobles’ disappointment with her had reached its highest point, and Jeanne’s fate was pretty much sealed – much like Liane’s.

And, of course, the darkest nod to the history is Gilles de Rais, known as a serial killer and possibly a pedophile (there are some historians who believe he was framed, but that’s not the point for now). On the other hand, in-game Gilles is a nice and noble guy and never betrays you or does something violent. At the end of the game, he sacrifices himself so Gilvaroth would be trapped inside of his body, and, considering the real history, the demon probably got him in the end. This reference is more well-known and has been discussed at several forums, but I still cannot help but mention it.

Also, on a less disturbing note – see how Gilles is drawn with a lily? That’s because Charles VII allowed de Rais to add this flower on their family crest, which was considered a great honor, as lily symbolized the power of the Crown (that’s what I heard, at least).
