Hi, had art today at school (welp it's actually called 'art therapy' but there is 0 therapy), ended up painting roach on a rock.

For chapter 2 I rounded out one of the first bits of optional content, a small sequence of caves dedicated to the Rockroach enemies. It's meant to play with the Drill more. The reward for it is getting a choose chest with another gadget card for attacking with.

Updated the minimap more, originally elevators weren't adding their data to it but now, everytime Poppin turns one on, the map links it to all other elevators he's activated.

On top of that I tweak the map hud more, to differentiate doors that lead to subareas from ones that function as shortcuts. I'm hoping it helps it be more useful.

I reworked the boss for chapter 2 a lot, but I'll post them in a separate video. But all that work made me think about the Chapter 3 boss: Rickity The Safety Ibbix.

Rickity's the robotic safety mascot for Bronze Belle Mining Co, representing their advancements in the fields of mining, construction, and robotics. Unfortunately, he also represents how shoddy their programming work is since he's gone rogue and attacks Poppin & Jupa at one point.

This is some early work on Rickity, testing out some of his attacks. He's very projectile heavy.

Next month I'd like to tweak the glove alts that you could get in Chapter 2, so that they're more fun to use and balanced. There's still some lingering bugs and design tweaks, but I plan to have some close friends test out Chapter 2 this month so I can get feedback.

I've been in a very boss focused mood, so Id like to finish up Rickity and start on the River Caves boss, Duobroros.

I have fun working on my game, but I don't think I'll feel good about sharing it for a long time. I just never get that sense I'm doing anything exciting enough. I've always hoped that if I made anything good, it would show through in GIFs, and I only share GIFs of stuff I'm proud of. It's not like I couldn't talk for days about all this shit, it's just whenever I do, I kinda feel ignored. I am grateful for the friends/people that take the time to comment though. 🍦: Name three good things about a character you hate. Daaaaaaaaaang we're starting out pretty difficult ain't we? Um, let's see. All I can think of is characters I absolutely loathe with a fiery passion, and there is no way on the Lord's green earth I am up to complimenting Nick Ryan right now. So I'll go with... oh my stars this is gonna be awful. Kark it, let's go with... Monica Stevens from The Rookie. Whenever she's onscreen I immediately start quoting Holt insulting Madeline Wuntch, so she definitely qualifies. Three things: 1, she's smart, 2, she's got cool red hair, and 3, she has the morals of a gargan rockroach a lot of creative solutions, which is important to have as a lawyer

🌿: Give some advice on writer's block and low creativity. Okay I have a couple of solutions that generally help a lot:

Read. Don't watch something, and (while this does help sometimes) don't read fan fic. Read an actual book, maybe of a similar genre to the story you're trying to write. Creativity is sometimes like a battery, that you need to recharge. If you don't, you burn out a LOT faster

In a similar vein, doing literally anything else helps. I have found that incredibly repetitive and boring tasks are pretty helpful. One time I had writer's block, and at work that day my boss put me in charge of basically, watching something print, and occasionally taking parts of the (incredibly long) printed book out of the printer and stacking it to the side. Needless to say, my writer's block had shattered by the end and I was coming up with a new story idea

Write something short and fun that you're actually excited about! Sometimes you need a break from your main project, and that's okay. Take that break! Write like 500 words about something that sounds fun, and let the enjoyment of being creative there carry over to your first project

Listening to music (especially instrumental) helps me focus a LOT. I recommend the Interstellar soundtrack, or anything else by Hans Zimmer (or Michael Giacchino)

I have found talking about it with someone I know and trust really, really helps me untangle any messes I have going on. Or going on a walk, for that matter

A few quirks of my art style;

Cats I feel battle a lot/are more aggressive than others I give little ticks on their paws to sorta represent their claws being out a lot

I don't draw separate iris and sclera on my cat designs so the eye color would be what others would draw as an Iris color

Bigger cats get 4 toes, smaller cats get 3. Gravity falls style

Inbox is always open but it might take a while to get 2 a request, once I finish a request I slap it in the queue (which i schedule 1 post per day so I don't overload the wc tags with my designs ajgjsjf)

I got a chance to work on some more fun stuff this month while inching closer to finishing Chapter 2.

Night Time

Most of the game takes place inside the mountain Poppin and Jupa travel to, and by the time they get the Drill gadget card, it's meant to be night time. Since you're meant to travel back to older locations in the game, I wanted to make changes to Chapter 1 to reflect that passage of time, including a night sky, sleeping bandits, and a firefly enemy.

I also added a shortcut for skipping past the farm at the end of chapter 1, via a gate that only unlocks when night time rolls around (though this gif shows it during sunset)

I also really wanted to add some wild life, such as birds.

Auto Tiler Updates

I implemented a method for allowing deeper ground tiles, including corners and slopes, to populate for any tilesets that include them. I spent a lot of time picking at more edge cases to make things line up better. However, I came to realize the number of redundancies in the current method made fixing things more complicated than it needed, so I spent a week redoing the structure of it. It's ended up being a lot easier to identify where problems are occurring and easier to resolve.

Slope Collision

I went back to slopes, since areas of Chapter 2 end up placing them in ways where you're more likely to collide with them at weird angles, causing unintended behavior (zipping, getting stuck, etc). I resolved most of them, though there's a lingering thing to fix with steep slopes cause of it. Overall though they're less finnicky, and should make level design a little easier to set up.

Grip Gloves

One of the items you can buy from Holly allows you to carry a KO'd partner while reviving them, instead of being stuck in place. It's slow, but it gives more options for avoiding hazards.

Treasure Tracker Chip Upgrade

You won't be able to buy this until much later in the game, but I wanted to add an item that displays any visible map tiles that contain chests you haven't opened yet. But since map data is populated automatically during gameplay, it's better to add it sooner than later.

Upcoming

My to-do list is starting to get much shorter for Chapter 2, the next major parts of it are reworking the end boss, cleaning up the script further, and polishing up two optional places (another poison tunnel sequence, and a sequence of caves dedicated to the Rockroach enemies).

It feels doable this month, granted I want to draw something for my birthday this Sunday, so look forward to that.

Has Equestria dealt with any major plagues or diseases in the past?

Well, I have mentioned the Canterlot rockroach infestation of 376 in passing, which would be a plague of insects.

Due to a lapse in vigilance, rockroaches made it into the central Canterlot food stores, which at the time contained both emergency rations and goods intended for the market. As a result, much of the food in Canterlot was ruined, resulting in a shortage.

Uneasy ponies rallied around the castle to ask Celestia for a solution, and was assured that word had been sent out requesting expedited delivery of replacement provisions. While this answer was of some reassurance, ponies still wondered what they would eat until such replacements arrived.

Celestia thought for a moment, then looked over to the castle guards and decreed “Let them eat cake!” Ponies were then ushered into the castle for a three day feast of cake and other pastries from the royal food stores. Though, keep in mind that the population of Canterlot at the time was smaller, so there wasn’t as much cake as one might think.

As a result of this crisis, the emergency food stores are now kept in a separate location, with any goods being added to it undergoing a separate inspection, regardless if considered already inspected. There are also magical wards and other precautions.

There are some more modern cases as well that I think ponies are aware of, and might even have experienced first hoof, like the parasprites or the plunderseeds, which would also count as plagues in the literary sense.

There has been a lot of property damage, and a great deal of work wasted, but fortunately, and most importantly, ponies have gotten through crises without any lasting harm.
