Holly Black's fairy universe is so rich, expansive, and solid that one can have some certainty about the nature of her fey without it being affirmed all the time.

For example, one thing that seems clear is that fairies feel, and they feel intensely. If they hate, they can hate for centuries. If they love, they will love eternally and be willing to give their life for their beloved. In "The Darkest Part of the Forest," this is told as a horror story. In "Modern Faerie Tales," Kaye's entire adventure is based on her desire to become Roiben's consort.

In "The Cruel Prince" trilogy, Balekin hints at this difference when he talks strangely about how humans love — this is all without mentioning Tiernan and Hyacinthe, who became enemies and still love each other enough to fight for each other, or Lady Nore with her late husband's hands around her neck.

We see this firsthand with Cardan not once, but twice! The first time occurs when he throws himself in front of Jude to save her from being hit by one of Grimsen's traps, and the second time is when, similarly, Cardan throws himself in front of Jude to save her from having a blade buried in her body.

The first time, he shows surprise with himself. It was the moment he realized he loved her on that level — in fact, he just loves her as is natural to his species. The second time, any surprise seems to have vanished, as if he had already accepted that he would do it for her a thousand more times if necessary.

That is, the fairies indeed love as described in the poems, and that is simply fantastic on the part of the author because, let's face it, it makes perfect sense considering the aesthetic of the fairies and everything else. Yes, all of this is about how much I love Holly Black and her skill in creating such wonderfully subtle wonder-filled settings ✨✨

I think, out of all the Roiben content I've done (cosplay-wise at least), this one I'm most proud of: it just feels so. . . Unseelie, y'know? The damp dark of the brugh, the scent of burning cloves and earth; tendrils from the trees above ground hanging like decorative cobwebs; ancient candles guttering along the rough walls—if you wanted to know what my happy place looks like, that's it. Also, the whole time I was filming I had the scene in Ironside, between Roiben and Ethine in the Kinnelon Ruins playing on loop in my head:

"You don't belong in a place like this." "And why is that, dear sister? Why don't I belong here?" Ethine groaned and slapped one open hand against the wall. "Because you are not a fiend!" She reminded Roiben so much of his old, innocent self that for a moment he hated her, for a moment he only wanted to shake her and scream at her and hurt her before someone else did. "No? Is it not enough, what I have done? Is it not enough to have cut the throat of a nix that dared laugh too loud or too long before my mistress? Is it not enough to have hunted down a hob that stole a single cake from her table? Is it not enough to have been deaf to their entreaties, their begging?" "Nicnevin commanded you." "Of course she did!" he shouted. "Again and again and again she commanded me. And now I am changed, Ethine. This is where I belong if I belong anywhere at all."

Something I really love about Roiben:

Whenever he messes up, and Kaye retaliates because she feels hurt or vulnerable (or even vindictive), Roiben always owns up to it. He even openly says, “I deserve this, I know I do” and he doesn’t take it personally, and his love remains constant regardless. (I’m like 70% through Ironside so can this possibly change in the next few chapters? Sure. But up until this point he’s been pretty consistent in this characterization and it’s really refreshing). But Kaye always wars with her own guilt when she’s dishing out retribution, and him saying this almost takes the guilt from her. It’s like Cassian holding up the punching bags for Feyre, telling her he can take the hit if she needs to make it.

So, knowing now what's up with Severin and Roiben... I have to give to Cardan credit for his suggestion to Jude, it was genius strategic move. Like he said "He might be foolish, but he's not a fool" and knows quite a bit despite he was drunk all the time...

I'm glad I read The Darkest Part of the forest and The Modern Faerie Tales, although I didn't like them as much as tfota...

mostly bc they have more heavy atmosphere, I mean Requiem for a Dream kind of heavy, with a lot of not so fairy themes not so far from real world like homeless teenagers, drug addiction and multiple betrays by siblings(I know, right? Hello, Tyran) and by other close relatives ( I didn't expect to find here slut mom who's sleeping with daughter's bf 😳)...

and I must say, even though you can't accuse Jude in being lovely and sweet, the main characters in those are pretty damaged and flawed.

I would say I liked Kaye more than others, but maybe it's also because she's in two books, so her story is more fleshed out

been re reading tithe since halloween for personal reasons and WOW the insurmountable guilt roiben feels about kaye… like he really thinks the moment she saw him, he ruined her life. even in a visit to impossible lands when they have been relatively happy together for years, he still describes acts of love as his removal or withholding any negativity for the sake of the ‘goodness’ that the relationship provides him.

like i can’t help but think about how his blind devotion to the seelie queen had skewed his understanding of love since i suppose that all seelie court members live in blissful naivety and adoration. the disillusionment with something you once believed to be perfect and the cruelty of it all… okay so what is love then……………..

anyway it is not necessarily healthy for him to have these conditions for why kaye should want him, but it’s actually really nice to see how they evolve and grow together. like clearly he is not trying to repeat the blind devotion that resulted in him becoming his crueller self! and we get to see his emotional progress and him on the healing journey? when he says smth like ‘i love you far too well for that’ (about his burdens) and she is telling him that that’s not what love is, love is shared etc etc i’m paraphrasing idk. and then at the end after the coup, he’s trying to be like ‘see you can’t get hurt it’s scary here, my life and my world is scary’ and she wants to take that next step idk idk i like it…..

also it’s not as tho she is some idealized object of innocence and perfection that has replaced the seelie queen. he grows to understands this, but i guess even in ironside there is still the sentiment that she is normal and doesn’t ‘deserve’ all of the difficulties in his life. as if being with him and having to share any emotional load would be some cruel punishment……………….!!! i’ll probably have more to say abt this specifically when i get there w my reread, but very fun and painful and sweet to see how his understanding of love changes!

whenever there’s like a character who has developed skewed visions of love i become soooo not normal about them… i love thinking about love (libra sun scorpio venus etc) esp since finishing all about love by bell hooks i just keep repeating some of the core ideas like ok 👍🏼 love can not exist when abuse and violence are present. we must live honestly and by a love ethic etc etc. it takes time, it takes work, it takes support, it takes commitment etc etc. as my friend said love is as love does!! anyway i love kaye and roiben i loooove them
