❝ I wish for you to come with me on a journey,” he said, spreading his hands in acknowledgment of being caught out. “There is to be a great coronation, the passing of the crown of the High King of Elfhame to his son, and I want you to accompany me. I can promise that we will dance and drink and that there will be time for very little else but merriment. ❝ And there is no one I would rather be merry with. ❞

What the hey, Tumblr? Again, apologies to those of you who have seen this already.
I made this image specifically for the Holly Black fandom, but also for the Month of Love challenge, and tried to post it twice using that hashtag, and both times the post simply didn’t show up anywhere. It has been weeks. I give up. No more month of love for me. I went to all the effort of colouring it (which I don’t, normally!), which is why this is annoying.
I’m going to try posting this with just modern faerie tales tags.

The Modern Faerie Tales by Holly Black
It has been such a long time since I’ve finished a book, about 2 months, if not longer.
This book is quite long, but in reality there are 4 stories. The first one being the Tithe, the second Valiant, the third Ironside, the fourth The Lament of Lutie-Loo.
The first and third book really caught my attention, mainly because I grew rather fond of the characters, I adored Roiben for some odd reason. I felt that he was the most selfless and complex character in the series.
He has been through quite a lot, from Silarial, his ex and queen, sending him to an enemy court, to killing innocent faeries to the delight of Nicnevin. Somehow he’s managed to keep a sliver of kindness in his heart, which is exemplified in his aid for Kaye, a changeling pixie who thought she was a human teenager her whole life. His confession in the last story, the one narrated by Lutie-Loo, a sprite from the Court of Termites, of how he truly loves Kaye and would do anything for her, was incredibly touching and perfectly depicted his character arc coming to an end.
Kaye seemed to be a reckless teenager who doesn’t really know what she’s stumbled upon. She is courageous, I’ll give her that, but, in all honesty, I didn’t like her all that much. She was a better protagonist than Val was in the second story.
Val seemed like a seventeen year old who was craving attention, since she’d been through a sudden break-up. Her complete adoration of Ravus the troll was understandable, but at the same time it was startling. She could have done so much more, but she decided to snort up Never instead of actually helping Luis make a difference.
The subject matter of Valiant was interesting, but I found it to be much too based on drugs and too less about actual fantasy. It felt somewhat out of place and the only character who actually made a difference in the last story was Luis.
Luis I found to be a rather relatable character, save for the fact that his father murdered his mother and stabbed his brother. He was down-to-earth, even though he had the Sight, he tried his best to keep his brother, Dave, afloat, even when it seemed absolutely useless. I truly believe that he has a good heart, but I was assured this in Ironside where we learn that he helped humans get rid of curses given to them by faeries. I understood his mistrust of the faeries and the sight, I also understood why he couldn’t actually understand Lolli’s reasoning.
The stories do tie in nicely together and the writing is excellent, Holly Black truly knows how to write fantasy novels. I just wish I had had more time to read so that it wouldn’t have taken me almost three months to read an 800 page book.
I especially liked how in Ironside the courts were explored thoroughly and how the author played with Roiben’s family more in the plot. It made every action much more tense for the good of both courts, and yet the actions of Roiben were still unexpected.
In conclusion, I liked this book, especially the tie in with Cardan from the Cruel Prince, but it didn’t wow me as much as I wished it had. It was also a pity that it took me this long to finish it, but that was entirely my fault.

How did you get into Holly Black books?
I love this question! There’s a bit of a history here so bare with me. I got into the Spiderwick Chronicles around 2007-2008 because my younger siblings were reading them. I was in middle school (a little old) but I still really enjoyed the books and I adored the Field Guide.
It goes without saying, I was hooked on faerie books so I looked into what else HB had written and I found The Modern Faerie Tale Series. Now, I went to catholic school at the time and my parents are conservative. So I was low-key scandalized by Tithe but... I was also the best book I had ever read. The atmosphere was so gritty. And these characters were not your typical heroes. Roiben was a good person forced into doing evil things. Kaye broke the rules, stole things, smoked, but still saved the day. And Corny was snarky, funny, and gay. I had never read about an LGBT+ character before.
I devoured the whole series. The trick was I could never ever ever ever ever tell anyone I had read these books. I was a good little catholic girl and a dutiful daughter, after all.
Tithe isn’t by any means perfect, but to this day it is one of my favorite books because it introduced me to a lot of concepts that I didn’t have words for at the time. Morally gray characters for one. But also the idea that there were different ways of living. It’s kind of a strange thing to explain but here it is: Faerie is obviously a terrifying place but it is also magical and (more importantly for me) freeing. I always known what terror feels like and I always new how to play certain roles to navigate home and school. But that isn’t freedom. I always had to hide parts of who I am. In Faerie, the folk do what they want and they don’t give a damn about the consequences. And more importantly in Faerie, you can love who you want. It’s subtle, but it seems like at least most of the folk are bi/pan. I didn’t figure out I was bi until much later but I found this idea very comforting.
Fast forward to 2017, by this point I’ve graduated college, I have my first full-time job, and I’ve been out as bi for a few years. I notice that a new Holly Black book is coming out. And I was getting back into reading YA after years of reading prestigious/overrated lit. I remembered how much I enjoyed HB’s books growing up. So I immediately placed a hold at the library.
As you can probably guess, I loved TCP. And it caused me to reread TMFT and Spiderwick, as well as pick up Darkest Part of the Forest, Coldest Girl in Coldtown, and Curseworkers for the first time.
So that’s a very long answer about how I first got into HB’s books and how I got back into them.
