Campbell and RJ

A platonic ship post/headcannon thingy ft. A whole lot of stuffies.

So this whole thing started in the discord cause I was spinning a wheel with character names on it and came up with these two. I also generated the nouns "attic" and "meme". Y'all are getting an edited version of that ramble.

1. Unthemed

Campbell has heard the tapes. He's only really busy when he's in crisis, so he's got them on analogue, an old school guy. Campbell tells himself they just back good background noise, and that's why he finds himself playing them on repeat. But one part always snags his attention.

Campbell tries to like the new cremated, with their big smile and enthusiastic way of latching onto any topic of conversation, but the words ring in his mind. The delivery, cold and flat, a bureaucratic kind of bitterness that doesn't bother to feel what it feels. Campbell tries to reconcile the image with the voice in his mind as he passes RJ a plate of his famous yellow rice and he can't. So he asks.

It's late. McCabe is borrowing his computer for whatever  topic they've decided to dive into this visit, and their leg is bouncing a hole into his floor. Campbell's careful to approach from the side, knowing McCabe keeps a gun on their belt for short notice, and he hovers there silently, watching the screen, until they look up. 

Krejjh isn't really his cousin. It's just a joke. But the tape rings between his ears and protective ness curls in his gut. 

So he asks.

RJ goes red. They sputter for so long the screen turns black. Campbell takes a seat and he waits. It isn't easy to understand a life like the antithesis to your own, but he tries.

McCabe talks for a while, in a low voice heavy with regret. They grill it into you, until survival, until hope is so heavilly associated with the pain of of few usurpers that even when you know you're being manipulated sometimes you slip. You become what they want. You're not sure if you want to be that kind of person. It means better pay, a bigger dorm, more respect. Something anybody could want.

But they regret it. And that's what's important. 

Campbell squeezes their hand. He stands, and leaves.

He throws that tape in the trash.

2. Attic

Nobody's been upstairs in maybe five years, maybe four, whenever was last time Tripathi needed a lot of stuff statched in a hurry. A of long hours put the boxes in Campbells attic and shut the door for good. He's passed a few polygraph's about it by virtue of forgetting. But now they need to hunker down until the Iris's landing gear defrosts, and he can only ask Park to sleep on the couch for so long without feeling a little guilty.

Campbell doesn't wanna go up there, he jokes about it over dinner, and Tripathi offers to recheck her records for the fourth time, but he waves her off. He'll just have get it over with.

McCabe stands and head off town the hall toward his desktop. They do that sometimes when they get distracted and Campbell thinks nothing of it. That is, until RJ comes back with a flashlight strapped to their hip, eyeing the gas mask they're holding. They ask if Campbell thinks that's overkill. Edict 2316 says to be as prepared as resources allow in the event agents but sweep an unknown place, but they're aren't exactly sure if that's normal.

Campbell says they don't have to do that for him.

McCabe says they know.

McCabe draws down the attic ladder, and the torrent of dust that tumbles down is enough to send them all coughing (and earn Park a glare. He raises his hands in surrender). McCabe goes up. It isn't actually that bad, which is generally how these kids of things go, they've found.  Krejjh insists on cracking open the cases, and after confirming with Sana that it's incredibly unlikely their contents are explosive. McCabe gets a crow bar go see what's up.

A bunch of....teddy bears. The IGR's propaganda management team gets really strict about what children are allowed access to, not being is a "waste of impressionable young minds", and until last year stuffed animals were still being studied.

(Apparently comfort is good for development. Who'd've thought./s)

Campbell calls to check they're okay after the silence goes on a little too long. They confirm and, not sure whether to laugh, cry,, or do something else, explain the situation. They're not all the same bears, either. Each one is unique, made from fabric scraps and patches.  Campbell climbs up behind them, complaining about his knees, and seems just as surprised to see the toys as McCabe was. Then his face splits in a grin and he points at crate after crate, asking McCabe to open them up. All toys. One is full of rabbits. Then turtles. Then moths. Campbell cackles in delight as he plucks put a wombat for his baby cousin.

"Not really my cousin, but you know."

There isn't much space in tha attic with all the stuff, but Campbell calls them in one by one. Violet grabs a snail with a tear in the stitching, promising it she'll get it patched right up. Arkady gets a squirrel. First wild animal she ever saw, and he favorite. Tripathi gasps in delight and tells the story of the sewing club that had been compiling those toys for years. They we're meant for a children's hospital one system over. It's a shame they never reach their destination.

But Campbell remembers, then. They got short notice to cancel the shipment, surprise IGR health examination. They kept those kids safe. But hey, they'll find all these animals a home. Even if its a few years late. For now, though, a few won't be missed. 

(Sana gets a squirrel and declares her's and Arkady's  best friends)

Krejjh and Jeeter make a quiz of it. Krejjh mostly remembers (capybara, not terracotta) and chooses a bat cause they fly well in extreme situations. Brian gets a fish.  Cause he likes it.

Park tries to pass, but after a thorough booing and hissing, names his turtle Shelly.

Campbell is beaming  by the time they're done, and talking to no one in particular about his plans for distribution  but then he catches McCabe just...standing there.

He puts a hand on their shoulder, and  asks if they have a name for the bright blue cricket in their hands.

"The only good thing about new jupiter" McCabe tells him "sometimes I gotta put on  a track to fall asleep"

Then they laugh and declare it Cricky Q, because it'd makes Sana  laugh and Arkady groan.

(Parks sleeps on a pile stuffies that night. Though, he's sure to apologize thoroughly come morning)

3. Meme

Campbell understands young people in the way a youth pastor understands young people (A/N like this is wattpad but I've never actually known a youth pastor so 🤷‍♀️).

He knows what a meme is

...and that's about it. 

It isn't so much the aging that bothers him, but he's confessed to Sana many-a night under the moonshine—if you're catching my drift— that he feels a out of touch. Which is deeply inconvenient for someone in charge of a network. If he were feeling bold, he might even call it a liability. 

Campbell does, however, know young people.

Opening with "You're young, right?" Is a guaranteed way to get a venomous look from RJ, which Campbell does recieve, but after that's faded RJ asks what he needs.

It's a message. His sources say the IGR's making a covert change in the protocols they use to search at checkpoints. Campbell spent two nights at his desk wondering what form of communication spread contagiously, from person to person in a directly manner based on mutual interests, that was convert enough in its message that even if it did reach the wrong eyes, they wouldn't understand it. Something that encouraged sharing by engaging its audience to get to as many people ad possible.

He decided on a meme. Now he just needs to craft one.

McCabe also knows what a meme is.....

Arkady told them a few months ago.

Like they'd heard the word before, and stuff, but mostly "meme" was a signal for "the higher-ups have a new PSA that will give you abs from cringing so hard"

BUT they're determined to help.

-campbell and RJ at the same computer

-campbell and Rj at two computers, talking to eachother while not looking uo from the screen

-Violet bringing blankets

-sana bringing dinner

-Campbell nodding off before RJ slams their fist on the desk and barks to wake up

-coffee.

-more coffee 

-so. Much. Coffee.

-Arkady comes in to vibe nearby (arkady has a PSP. Idk why why but she likes to play sonic on PSP cause I said so that's what she's doing)

-rj looks up at arkady and squints

-shot of Akrady with a very bright light in her face, pan around to RJ in front of a projector board pointing to an image of Kermit the frog drinking tea, she gestures for Campbell to go to the next slide and ARKADY flinches as seeing the vibe check image blown up so big. RJ writes this down

-the song from rocky is playing BDOSVSISVSJDVDJD

In the end they produce a nearly incomprehensible video of movie references and meme hieroglyphs. See figure A:

This image has 2 pixel in it. Delightful. 

But anyways, like, this video has so much stuff going on. They test it on violet, arkady, Brian, who all have the same reaction: firstly loosing thier shit and secondly, squinting and looking closer. The message is received.

Is spreads like wildfire. There's no uptick in arrests that month.

-music fades back in

-Campbell brings RJ's fist above their head to a living room of the gang. They all stand, holler. And clap

-pan to the stuffies....they're excited too.

-fade to black
