ppl hating on ascended astarion and gurls who like "dark romance" be like "omg the game makes it so clear that he actually doesnt care abt u/ascending is the wrong choice" as if the whole point of a dark romance isnt to have a DARK MFN ROMANCEEEEEEE OMFG like bae. we havent been reading and writing cathartic abuse fanfics for a decade for no reason.

It would be absolutely PERFECT on a narrative standpoint for the villainess and the protagonist to fall in love. WHY PUSH THE HET ROMANCEEEEEEE

Honestly the best answer is Korean conservatism and queerbaiting smh. Despite looking like a progressive country homophobia and transphobia are still pretty bad there, especially among the older generation. I've been seeing a rise in LGBTQ+ representation in things like k-dramas and manhwas recently but it's primarily kept to side characters, low budget series, or the BL/GL category. and even with that, GL is still very underrepresented compared to BL. Like for every good 20 BL manhwa there's like 1 good GL manhwa that isn't just about fanservice and sex scenes. god the sexualization of LGBTQ+ media is a completely different can of beans too

Also its the limitations on the genre too. A lot of shoujo manhwas are marketed to a primarily female audience and obv that means they need a male lead for them. And since shoujo is a lot more mainstream than BL or GL, it can't have a canonically official gay couple in the front! Which then brings up queerbaiting. From a market standpoint it's probably that they want to get as many ppl to read it as possible and the best way to do that is to have an official het romance at the front and hint at a queer relationship throughout smh

Which is really unfortunate, i think it would be amazing plotwise and thematically to have the protagonist and the villainess fall in love.
