Two great comedies filled the latter part of my final day at #TCMFF. First director #RonShelton and star #TimRobbins spoke before BULL DURHAM at the Egyptian. Then director #JohnLandis and most of the cast of ANIMAL HOUSE, including (sigh) #TimMatheson, spoke at length before the screening at the Chinese Theatre.

“White Men Can’t Jump”
The OTHER basketball movie from the 90s I think is totally AWESOME. One of the best sports comedies ever! Totally directed by Ron Shelton who did ‘Bull Durham’!

Thoughts : White Men Can’t Jump (1992)
Tumblr media
When White Men Can’t Jump first hit the promotional circuit, it was promoted as a hip basketball film for the hip-hop community.  As a young man obsessed with both basketball and hip-hop, and finding ways to be actively involved in both cultures, this one was a slam-dunk for me (no pun intended).  I knew I’d like the film, but I never imagined that, 25 years later, I could revisit it and be hit just like the first time, while simultaneously remembering a flashpoint in Hollywood that lead to two major stardoms being set in turbo-drive for their respective trajectories.
Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson) is a former college basketball player turned hustler, doing what he can to keep he and his girlfriend Gloria Clemente (Rosie Perez) afloat.  The two are trying to do what they can to repay a debt owed to the Stucci Brothers, who are constantly a step behind the couple, while Gloria studies in hopes of breaking the bank on Jeapordy! with her vast and diverse wealth of knowledge tidbits.  Meanwhile, Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) is a hustler in his own right, attempting to move his family out of the Vista View projects via real estate, construction, basketball, and a wealth of other random hustles.  The two meet on the court when Billy outsmarts Sidney on Sidney’s home turf, leading to a proposition from Sidney : the two team up for a week, hustling on the side, until an upcoming two-on-two tournament, where the two can potentially split $5,000 worth of prize money.  As the two attempt to work together for mutual benefit, they are forced to face their personal demons, as well as issues with trust and pride, or be forced to accept their current fates and situations.
Respecting the game was a major part of the White Men Can’t Jump production, and it certainly shows in the film.  It was rumored that Wesley Snipes was not quite the basketball player that his character was, but a wealth of other ballplaying actors were there to pick up the slack (more on that later).  The energy of pick-up basketball permeates the entire proceedings, and the humor integrated into the proceedings helps us separate this from the gangster fare that was popular at the time, even when threats of violence take place in the film.  Philosophical insights into the game are placed throughout the dialogue, many of which I still use to this day.  Even the shoe and jersey game was on point throughout the film, with much of the gear being hit or miss in hindsight outside of the shoes and jerseys (time has not been kind to films of the 1990′s).
Power struggles are a major theme in the film, and they are present in several arcs that play out.  Billy and Sidney have a power struggle dynamic in terms of both skill and approach to the game.  Billy struggles with power over how he is perceived in a culture that he loves and respects, but is clearly a minority in.  He also struggles with power over his control of money and his pride, with both often fleeting and deflating to him.  Gloria and Billy struggle with their own power dynamic, as each tries to manipulate the other into an ideal mate without first facing their own faults.  And, not to be forgotten, every game played is a power struggle for pride and respect on the court, which is what it all comes down to in the end.
Actors that ball populate the proceedings.  Woody Harrelson is a rumored hardcore basketball player, and when given the opportunity to shine, he shows it in the film.  Cylk Cozart was a legend in the Los Angeles area for his roles as a character actor and his legitimate ability on the court.  Nigel Miguel and Duane Martin would both go on to have their basketball skills showcased in separate feature films, and their pairing looked like a true dominant force in the film.  Even Marques Johnson was recently retired from the NBA when he landed his role in the film.  While Eddie ‘The King’ Faroo (Louis Price) may have only been a legend in the film, Freeman Williams was as much a legend in real life as his character Duck Johnson, being second in Division 1 college basketball scoring (second only to ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich).
Wesley Snipes, always on point when it comes to personality, also had an uncanny ability to look the part when it came to playing athletes.  He was a martial artist by trade, but he had a way of being able to control his body and be somewhat believable in his portrayal of a flashy basketball player, in this case.  Woody Harrelson was already a TV star at the time, and had worked several years in film, but this was the role that helped him breakout in film, with his charisma and his range beginning to show in ways they’d previously been unable to.  Rosie Perez also found breakout stardom in her role, finding a way to remain edgy and street while not being limited to roles in what were essentially modern day blaxploitation films.  Kadeem Hardison also found an opportunity to spread his comedic wings, being able to play blue and be a bit more ‘street’ than he was able to normally portray.  Marques Johnson, Ernest Harden, Jr., Duane Martin and Nigel Miguel also find moments to entertain in smaller appearances.
It’s nice to know that White Men Can’t Jump has managed to stand the test of time, in my opinion.  The humor still plays, the basketball holds up, and the film has managed to age somewhat gracefully, with the hindsight of fulfilled promise playing into the actors we now know and love, but were only on the verge of stardom at the time.  Who knows, maybe the film will even find a second life one of these days.
