Honestly one of my favorite things in Tears of the Kingdom is that the Gerudo scholar Rotana finally learns the story of the Eighth Heroine. Good for her for pursuing her research despite all the years of trouble caused by Ganon. I hope Rotana becomes the star of the archaeological society like she always wanted, she deserves it.

The Biography of One Vala Rotana

Rotana was born to a merchant and an archeologist, though the latter was something of a secret. Her mother, a traveling armorer, spent equal time inside the city limits of Gerudo town as she did in Hyrule, gathering materials for her legendary craft. Her father, an archeologist, spent as much time with her as he could, though he never left Hyrule's boundaries. He was curious about his wife's homeland, but he was a sickly man and just traveling in his preferred regional temperature could be enough for him to fall ill for some time. Rotana still visited him when her mother could bring her, so she experienced the world outside the desert's relatively safe boundaries much earlier than other Gerudo. She brought back tales of monsters and ruins, grand roads that had been felled y the Calamity's harsh embrace (and sometimes even previous disasters). Most importantly of all, she brought back the stories her father told her when they were settling in at night during a dig.

He was an archeologist by trade, supported in part by his wife's massive fortune, but he did not limit his studies to Hyrulean ruins. He explored the damp lands of Lanayru province, and on a few occasions even braved the foothills of Death Mountain and the Hebra province, during the summer when it had not yet frozen over. From him, Rotana gained an appreciation for foreign cultures, and the past, and from her mother, the finer things in life. Though the Calamity raged on, they were still able to afford the little things - fresh milk, foreign fruit, expensive cuts of meat, and so on. Her mother's work allowed her to follow her life's passion. As she grew older, she began organizing her own expeditions into the desert, returning with riches and artifacts long buried by the sand. She became something of a local celebrity in her own right.

When her little sister Pearle was born, she took her under her wing. Pearle is an odd girl in some ways, taking to studying biology and attempting to engineer plants that can sustain life in the desert. Rotana takes these quirks in stride, even encouraging them when she has the chance. Their mother still sells goods in faraway lands, even as the world prepares for a greater strike from the Calamity. In the meantime, Rotana is content to explore everything this world can yet offer.
