Ok imagine a cute modern romcom fluffy meet cute where reader hires a pet feeder/sitter/walker through a company like Rover bc your work schedule has been crazy recently. And Eddie has been assigned to your pet. So he’s coming over to your place once or twice a day to feed your pet, take it for a walk if it’s a dog or play with it with string toys/feed it if it’s a cat(or just hang out if it’s shy). Every time he’s over he’s sending you pics via their app to show you how it’s doing. You don’t think much of it, but over time you surprise at how much your pet has clearly grown to like him. Nuzzling on him or sitting in his lap, purring and content when it normally hates strangers. You’re glad cause you were nervous with a complete stranger taking care of your baby while you’re not there.

One day you have the day off but forget to cancel your appointment and Eddie makes his way over. You’re sitting in your living room when you hear the sound of your front door open. Your pets ears perk up and they immediately run over while you’re silently freaking out. You grab the closest thing to you that could be used as a weapon and sneak over to the wall next to the door frame. You hear a man’s voice cooing your pet and calling them a good baby, like a smart burglar would do you think. As Eddie walks through the door frame you almost bash him over the head before he quickly ducks then puts his hands in the air and says who he is and where he’s from. You take a minute before remembering the pet service and then feel like an idiot, apologizing for almost putting him into a coma. When you’ve calmed your racing heart and recovered, you notice how cute he is, with his big brown eyes and curly brown hair and shy, goofy smile. When he points out it’s time for your dogs walk/whatever and if he should still do it since you’re already paying for the service anyway, you offer to go with him/take him to a coffee shop on you while you take a walk around the neighborhood. I use Rover! I believe it's the most popular one out there, so even though it takes a fairly hefty cut (20%), I feel that it's worth it just for making yourself so accessible to clients. It also has the benefits of setting your area (as a radius from your address), letting you choose the sizes of dog you can sit (if any), being pretty safe, and having a guarantee in case of emergency (covering injury to you or a pet). Drawbacks are that only cats and dogs are included, the aforementioned 20% cut, and that you have to pay for a background check before you get started (mine was $35).

Hi!! Of course you can, I love talking about my job so I’m always happy to answer questions about it :) My answer is kind of long so I put it under a readmore, hopefully this helps!!

So my dog walker origin story is kind of weird haha. Back in 2015 I was on Care.com as a petsitter, and I never ever ever got any gigs from it (90% of the gigs were spam anyways) until I randomly got a message one day asking if I wanted to work 30 hours a week for a starting pay of $16/hr. And I assumed it was spam bc who tf needs their dog walked 30 hours a week but I ended up answering it anyways, and it turned out to be a professional dog walking and petsitting company that was looking for a part-time employee, and spoiler alert they’re the same company I work for today (though I’m full-time now lol.)

So you mentioned Rover which is very similar to care.com, and I do know that a lot of people struggle to get gigs on there because the people offering services are almost always way outnumbering the people wanting the service, and it doesn’t surprise me that Covid’s only increased that divide. And speaking of Covid, it has made the petsitting industry veeeeery complicated because we simultaneously have the trend of people now working from home and avoiding vacations who no longer need dog walkers/pet sitters, while also having this huge boom of Quarantine puppies and the people who assume covid’s over and are now taking every vacation they missed out on in 2020. So the market for petsitters is there, but it’s very different from how it was in 2019 and earlier.

Now, if you’re looking to walk dogs/petsit on your own without working for a company, my own personal advice (which is an accumulation of how I’ve gotten external gigs, how my employers started their company, and how my freelance dog walker friends get their gigs) is to focus your online marketing less on Rover and similar websites and more to local Facebook groups and NextDoor, and to be really proactive with getting your name out there in the real world. Put fliers up in apartment lobbies, coffee shops, local pet businesses (pet stores, dog bakeries, vets, etc), and on street corners, and make sure they’re explicit about what services you offer (Do you want to stay in people’s homes or do timed visits for petsitting? Will you walk dogs individually or do you intend to do pack walks? Are you wanting to do morning/night walks or only lunch hour? etc.) And once you do get your first clients, referral systems are a great way to build more business! My company has accumulated a client base in the hundreds by this point, and a huge portion of our clients come from referrals, if not most.

Now, if you DO want to work for a company like I do (which personally I recommend for a lot of reasons, number one being that I’m insured through them) then I suggest looking on Indeed and similar job websites for dog walkers and petsitters, as they’re almost always hiring. Keep in mind that the pet care industry is neck-and-neck with the restaurant industry in terms of employee turnover for a lot of the same reasons, namely being that it’s a deceptively physically demanding industry, often doesn’t pay great, the hours are very very long, and you’re on call from 6 am to 10 pm, sometimes even earlier/later. So basically they’re always hiring lol.
