Continuing my series of famous people who have rowed and in this case being his favorite sport of all. Charles Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin was a French educator and historian, founder of the International Olympic Committee, and its second President. He is known as the father of the modern Olympic Games. He states ‘Rowing is the most perfect sport in existence.’ In his long struggle to popularize all modern sports and ensure that each and every one had an equal place in the Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin did not often play favorites. But in his “Olympic Letter XX,” which appeared in 1919, the Baron took the wraps off and proclaimed his true love for rowing. He was then 56, and he practiced what he preached, continuing to row throughout his life. This photograph was taken on Lake Geneva in 1935 when the Baron was 72. Note the Chateau d’Ouchy in the background. “Rowing is the most perfect sport in existence ... It is the rower's pleasure to feel himself a thinking machine, to experience at each stroke how strength wells up within him, spreads out and flows away. Continuing my list of famous people who have rowed I can’t help but list this truly amazing man, Gary Rodgers. Throughout my rowing career at Cal and beyond Gary was always around cheering us on and donated millions to the California rowing program. If you ever bought Dreyer’s ice cream from 1975 - 2010 then you supported the UC Berkeley rowing program. Gary built a brand new bathhouse which is in use today and hosts the USA 🇺🇸 Olympic Men’s rowing team training center and operations. It was his dream to make Cal the best rowing center in the world. In 1963, he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California. He was named an All-University Athlete that same year and rowed in the 1964 U.S. Olympic Trials. In 1968, he received a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School. A 45-year Oakland resident, Rogers bought Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream with his partner, William “Rick” Cronk, in 1977 for $1 million. It soon became a freezer favorite. He led the Oakland-based business for 30 years, as it grew from 75 employees to one of the largest ice cream companies in the world with 9,000 employees. Words to live by: ‘My business partner used to say: ‘You only go around the track once, you owe it to yourself to enjoy the journey.’ Those words are so important. There are no mulligans in life … Let’s make it as good as it can be … Life goes by fast. Believe me, I’m 73, I know, and I’ve faced the Grim Reaper a couple of times. “I’ve had very serious brain surgery and I recently had lymphoma both of which could have easily killed me … Life is so precious. I’ve come to the conclusion if you get today right, the weeks, the months and the years will take care of themselves. Don’t plan so specifically for yourself. Throwback Thursday #tbt To the time I was 19 years old sitting in 5 seat in the Cal Varsity boat in the finals at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames rowing event in England. We rowed against Cambridge/Queens Tower Eight event in the finals in the summer of 1999. Our bow seat was severely ill with chicken pox but he raced anyway and it would be the first loss since starting my career at Cal 2 years earlier. We beat the British 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 lightweight national (‘Notts’) team and a German national team crew to make the finals by fell short. Continuing my series on famous people that have rowed I introduce you to Hugh and Ran Laurie. Ran Laurie: Like John Kelly, Ran Laurie was a rower who took gold in the coxless pairs in rowing at the 1948 London Games, whose partner on that gold-medal winning team was Jack Wilson. Hugh Laurie starred in hit series, House. Like his father, Laurie rowed at school and university. In 1977, he was a member of the junior coxed pair that won the British national title before representing Britain's Youth Team at the 1977 Junior World Rowing Championships. In 1980, Laurie and his rowing partner, J.S. Palmer, were runners-up in the Silver Goblets coxless pairs for Eton Vikings rowing club. He also achieved a Blue while taking part in the 1980 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. Cambridge lost that year by five feet. During this time, Laurie was training for up to eight hours a day and was on course to become an Olympic-standard rower.
