My RSS reader reset the unread count for every single one of my feeds, FFS. That's like it's only purpose, to keep track of what I have and haven't seen!
I have like 150 comics I follow. I don't want to jump around to find my place in all of those!

rss readers are very cool. one problem. i do not know where to find rss feeds.
i'm considering following comics i like, but im a webtoon nerd. and for youtubers i like, i just turn on notifications. there are a couple non-webtoon comics im following, but not enough feeds in general for a continuous stream of news and updates. i sorta just want this to be my morning newspaper type deal if that makes sense.
only thing i'm really missing out on is news sources if anyone can hook me up with good feeds like that.

RSS feeds
RSS feeds are a way to aggregate different websites into one platform so you don't have to go look through ten different websites everytime you want to check the news.
Personally I have been trying out Feedly (Android). Not sold on it so far, there's a lot of features locked behind premium, which I'm not opposed to, but I'd rather support the actual creators with my money.
how to keep following people when a major social platform implodes
(...and you don't want to join 20 new websites)
First, get an RSS reader*:
Desktop: Feedbro (browser extension), QuiteRSS, Raven Reader
Android: Feeder
iOS/Mac: NetNewsWire
You'll be able to make a custom feed to follow blogs, webcomics, social media feeds, podcasts, news, and other stuff on the web all in one place. To follow something, find its "feed URL"-- often marked by an icon that looks like this ↓-- and paste it into your reader of choice as a new feed.
Tumblr media
Some feed URLs for social media:
Twitter: Feedbro can use Twitter profile URLs as feed URLs. Otherwise, use nitter.net/username/rss (or other Nitter instance) (You can get a CSV file of all the accounts you follow using "Download a user's friends list" on Tweetbeaver)
Tumblr: Use username.tumblr.com/rss or username.tumblr.com/tagged/my%20art/rss to follow a blog's "my art" tag (as an example)
Cohost: Use username.cohost.org/rss/public (WIP feature)
Mastodon: Use instance.url/@username.rss
Deviantart: Info here
Spacehey: Info here
Youtube: Go to a channel in a web browser, view page source, and use Ctrl-F/Command-F to find a link that starts with "https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id="
Instagram: Feedbro can use Instagram profile and hashtag URLs as feed URLs. Otherwise, Instagram doesn't have RSS feeds, and due to aggressive rate limiting on their part, it's not so simple to generate a feed URL.
Facebook: Feedbro can use public Facebook group/page URLs as feed URLs.
(If you know an artist who exclusively posts to Instagram, you may want to gently suggest that they crosspost elsewhere...)
Also see how to find the RSS feed URL for almost any site. Try using public RSS-Bridge instances or Happyou Final Scraper to generate feeds for sites that don't have them (Pillowfort, Patreon, etc).
*You can set up your subscriptions in one reader and import them into another by exporting an OPML file.

patreon coasts so hard on being the first big name in artist support/paywalling. no rss feeds for anything except podcasts. each patreon only gets one podcast feed so if they've got multiple 'shows' it's all jumbled up together. once you connect discord you're in the discord for every patreon you subscribe to, no option to be selective about it. there's ostensibly a shop function but only for digital items and barely anyone uses it, meanwhile there's all these sticker clubs that give you special shop passwords and codes to use on their actual functional website. writing posts in the patreon post editor sucks. they don't even offer things that would actually be useful, like letting artists collab and offer discounts to people who subscribe to multiple patreons as a bundle.
this got away from me but every time i want to listen to a podcast ad-free only to discover that i will need to subscribe to a patreon feed that includes six other podcasts i don't care about i want to gnaw on an ethernet cable

I'm not sure if what I wrote is what this post had in mind but… also I meant to do this as a rb but my toxic trait is writing things in drafts/private posts so I err uhhh look I can't keep fighting with Tumblr formatting ok
Mhin receiving an unusually specific compliment. ᵕ ω ᵕ
Tumblr media
“You're so fascinating, Mhin. If you wrote a book, I would definitely read it.  Even if you wrote the book about something really boring.  Even if you wrote…a dictionary, full of words I already know the meanings to.  I'd still read it, just because you wrote it.  Just to feel like I got to walk beside you in the world for a little while."
Mhin looks over at you despite themself. Your voice is low, tone affectionate difficult to parse over the incessant noise permeating the Wet Wick. They find themselves staring at your lips, as if to read your words despite hearing you clearly.
“You're really the most interesting person I know...  Which is saying a lot, in this city!”  You laugh at yourself, bandaged fingers trailing around the rim of the glass placed in front of you at the bar.  Your face is flushed, pupils dilated.  The longer they look at you, brows furrowed as they try to make sense of your words, the less you seem able to look them in the eyes.
The liquid in your glass is clear.
Tequila?  Vodka?  Gin?  A stomach wrenching combination of all three, possibly.  Who knows what Leander was willing to put in front of you, if it makes you so…
Mhin huffs, mouth wrenching into a frown. They clasp a hand around the glass in front of you. "I think you've had enough." They must have gone (miraculously) nose-blind from the boozy scent of the Wet Wick because even as they slide the heavy tankard closer to themself, the pungent tang of alcohol is no more invasive than it was prior. They expected to be able to taste the fumes coming off of whatever concoction they just took from you.
"I'm--" You start to protest, but you find yourself cut off when Leander says something that causes the crowded bar to go wild, cheers erupting. One of the Bloodhounds jostles Mhin in their mirth, causing your confiscated drink to upend, contents sloshing over the surface of the bar and soaking the sleeve of Mhin's shirt.
It's water.
You were saying those things while sober.
Mhin's eyes find yours, no attention spared for the slurring Bloodhound beside them. You're looking at them affectionately, lips quirked.
"Would you be mad at me if I told you that you're too cute?" You ask, something far too warm, too inviting in your words.
Mhin is halfway across the bar in a heartbeat, burning red ears gone deaf to the sound of Leander's voice, calling out to them that they haven't picked their pay up yet. They'll get it tomorrow, they think, racing towards the respite of the fresh night air. Away from the urge to--
Mhin doesn't let themself turn to look back at you as they leave. Though they can't stop themself from wondering: if they did, would they see you staring back at them?
Damn Mhin just take the compliment. I made Mhin's about their brains instead of their looks etc. bc while I think mentioning wanting to kiss their beauty mark would fluster them I think this is the type of thing that would absolutely infect their brain.  Have them thinking about those words over and over until it completely ruins their nightly Soulless hunting; they give up & just stargaze all night.

may i take advantage of the current state of tumblr to suggest that you all learn how RSS works? please? please learn what RSS feeds are and get a feed reader for me please? and then if everyone scatters to reasonable sites that autogenerate feeds or if everyone makes their own feed by hand, you wont have to check fiftyleven sites to see what everyone is up to?

hello! I was catching up on reading NAKAQUOI! and the essay from the most recent entry was such an inspiring method of storytelling. enough so to make me reach out and ask about your website in general (if you're comfortable answering!). what is it like running a lore/gallery site for your work? how and why did you get started? and lastly, what about it keeps you going?
thank you, cheers! -Winn
😭 Thank you so much for the kind words, this means a lot to me. I really enjoyed writing that little essay.
This is going to be a weird and vulnerable sidebar, but I promise I’m going somewhere with it. Honestly, it blows my mind that anyone reads them. I think it’s because I’m still operating on the assumption that this form of storytelling is for n=1 (yours truly) and other people are merely tolerating it, LOL. I used to be way more sensitive about sharing my characters / stories / worlds, because the forms of storytelling that came naturally to me were often received as incomprehensible, dense, and unintuitive by other people. At a certain point I decided that I just had to accept this and become my own hype man. People could enjoy the pretty pictures out of context, and they could be a vehicle for me to journal about the pretend people who live in my head. Good compromise 👍
for someone who talks big about making weird art and finding the 6 people in the audience who truly get it, I don’t think I realized that this could include my deranged essays about things that aren’t real. And yet. AND YET!!!! I think this desire to present my work in a way that’s “more” than just pretty pictures with text attached to them has been simmering for a long time, even though I dismissed it and was kind of embarrassed about it. Which is wild. Because I grew up on bestiaries and warrior cats lore compendiums and video game wikis and morrowind. There was clearly a precedent. And Yet.
Anyway, this desire started rubbing shoulders with the technical limitations of blogs and gallery websites, and also a general disillusionment with social media during the enshittification of the internet. Like, yeah it sucked that my whole body of work could vanish overnight. But mostly I had worldbuilding neuroses that made me want to scratch at the walls, and I knew just enough html + css to be dangerous. In 2018, I had also finished some longer works that made me more confident in my ability to deliver a cohesive Moribund, and these works weren’t intuitive to share on social media… So… I guess that gave me the impetus to stop flirting with the idea of getting my own website and start actually working on it.
M0R1BUND.com used to be a pure html + css + js website hosted on Neocities. It was ideal and I miss it in a lot of ways, because yeah, that IS the most unadulterated control you can have over your webspace. Had a blast with it, experimented a lot, learned a lot, hosted galleries and twines and webfiction and digital collages and ARPG stuff and interactive maps and a webcomic. And it was mine as much as it was the work of kind people sharing sample code on stackexchange, LOL.
Eventually, I felt the growing pains of managing this by hand. Updating ate hours out of my day. There are definitely more intuitive ways to build and maintain a pure html + css + js website, but I was working with what I knew. I started learning wordpress for basedt.net with the hopes of automating certain operations, like posting art to a gallery or pages to a webcomic. It felt intuitive enough that I later rebuilt M0R1BUND.com in wordpress.
It took a long time and a lot of work, like almost a year? And I still haven’t mirrored everything. Wordpress has made things easier to maintain, but I learned the hard way that it doesn't avoid the pitfalls of simpler website-builders… which is to say… whatever it does to make life easier will also make life incredibly difficult if you decide you want to do something manually. And it’s never the stuff you expect.
These days there’s also the baggage of Automattic’s nonsense. Wordpress is open source, so I don’t think it will go anywhere, but it’s still the corporate clownery that I wanted to escape by making my own website. Blech.
Really though, I love running M0R1BUND and it’s the closest thing I have to an ideal “home” for my work. Going to a dedicated website is unintuitive and out of the way for a lot of people, but (indicates generally) what have we just learned about me. This one’s for n=1 and the, like, 6 people who pop in and say hello. You are my people...
Looking forward, things cook at the rate of 2937728839 irons in the fire, and they are all getting done, but they are all getting done sooooo slowly… I’m having fun. Besides having a general compulsion to make art and tell stories and be Understood, I think that’s what carries me thru this. I want to have fun. and I want to trick people into caring about my characters and also the Sonoran Desert. And as Bjork says, I have to get the wiggles out or else the dark times will come.
It’s getting late and I don’t have a denouement for this. Thank you for your kind words! Thank you for asking! hope this answers? hope this helps (???) take the best and leave the rest.

I understand that rss is not popular because it's kind of techy, requires more active curation than a normal social networking site, and the best uis for a reader that I've seen can at best be described as "clunky".
but I think that a lot of people actually want a rss reader.
"I just want a website that shows the content of the creators that I choose to follow" -> that's an rss reader
"I don't want the website to mess with my timeline. just show me all posts in chronological order" -> rss readers do that. in fact you can choose to see posts in normal chronological order, reverse chronological order, pick to see only unread posts and you can even save interesting posts to read them later
"I don't want to see posts from people I don't follow" -> as far as the reader is concerned, the only creators that exist are those you follow
"I saw a post that looked interesting but then the site updated and now I've lost it!" -> never will happen on a rss reader. it'll keep all the posts on its queue as long as it has space on it left (afterwards it will start discarding the older posts to make room for the new ones)
just give rss readers a go. they're often ugly and require you to be active about managing the creators you follow, but isn't that a good thing after all?

Some day my Internet connection will return from the wars, and when it does we are so talking about the spirit behind this.
News of the day on hold at least until tomorrow. I've not forgotten. Just impractical to do until I can connect my laptop again.

I somehow manage to be up to date with anime news, just by checking the releases every season and visiting one or two twitter news accounts.
Now when it comes to manga, I'm so outdated...
