every gamedev company that touts their latest hundred-gigabyte release as a "technical marvel" or a "revolutionary piece of gaming" should be forced to have all its programmers work on making a fun and functional and complete game on hardware from the 90s. make them work on a game under the constraints of a fantasy console like the pico-8 or the tic-80, even. just something that would fall over and die instantly at the mere presence of an rtx-capable gpu.
i think it should be a regular thing, too. make sure they stay humble.
as i was typing this i remembered that a lot of people get into game dev because they're passionate about it, not because they like making games with such massive filesizes that any kind of computer that isn't cutting edge won't have the space for it. in this case i would like to instead propose that we make the stockholders of these companies make a game. make it a mandatory regular renewal thing. if you're gonna be making money off an industry, you should at least have some idea what goes into the industry in question. plus if it's mandatory and it's recurring, stockholders might be able to sway big execs into improving work conditions. sure it'll probably just be motivated by "i refuse to be put through the industrial wringer" but so long as the improvements aren't just for stockholders then i'd still call that a win

research & development is ongoing
since using jukebox for sampling material on albedo, i've been increasingly interested in ethically using ai as a tool to incorporate more into my own artwork. recently i've been experimenting with "commoncanvas", a stable diffusion model trained entirely on works in the creative commons. though i do not believe legality and ethics are equivalent, this provides me peace of mind that all of the training data was used consensually through the terms of the creative commons license. here's the paper on it for those who are curious! shoutout to @reachartwork for the inspiration & her informative posts about her process!
part 1: overview
i usually post finished works, so today i want to go more in depth & document the process of experimentation with a new medium. this is going to be a long and image-heavy post, most of it will be under the cut & i'll do my best to keep all the image descriptions concise.
for a point of reference, here is a digital collage i made a few weeks ago for the album i just released (shameless self promo), using photos from wikimedia commons and a render of a 3d model i made in blender:
and here are two images i made with the help of common canvas (though i did a lot of editing and post-processing, more on that process in a future post):
more about my process & findings under the cut, so this post doesn't get too long:
quick note for my setup: i am running this model locally on my own machine (rtx 3060, ubuntu 23.10), using the automatic1111 web ui. if you are on the same version of ubuntu as i am, note that you will probably have to build python 3.10.6 yourself (and be sure to use 'make altinstall' instead of 'make install' and change the line in the webui to use 'python3.10' instead of 'python3'. just mentioning this here because nobody else i could find had this exact problem and i had to figure it out myself)
part 2: initial exploration
all the images i'll be showing here are the raw outputs of the prompts given, with no retouching/regenerating/etc.
so: commoncanvas has 2 different types of models, the "C" and "NC" models, trained on their database of works under the CC Commercial and Non-Commercial licenses, respectively (i think the NC dataset also includes the commercial license works, but i may be wrong). the NC model is larger, but both have their unique strengths:
"a cat on the computer", "C" model
"a cat on the computer", "NC" model
they both take the same amount of time to generate (17 seconds for four 512x512 images on my 3060). if you're really looking for that early ai jank, go for the commercial model. one thing i really like about commoncanvas is that it's really good at reproducing the styles of photography i find most artistically compelling: photos taken by scientists and amateurs. (the following images will be described in the captions to avoid redundancy):
"grainy deep-sea rover photo of an octopus", "NC" model. note the motion blur on the marine snow, greenish lighting and harsh shadows here, like you see in photos taken by those rover submarines that scientists use to take photos of deep sea creatures (and less like ocean photography done for purely artistic reasons, which usually has better lighting and looks cleaner). the anatomy sucks, but the lighting and environment is perfect.
"beige computer on messy desk", "NC" model. the reflection of the flash on the screen, the reddish-brown wood, and the awkward angle and framing are all reminiscent of a photo taken by a forum user with a cheap digital camera in 2007.
so the noncommercial model is great for vernacular and scientific photography. what's the commercial model good for?
"blue dragon sitting on a stone by a river", "C" model. it's good for bad CGI dragons. whenever i request dragons of the commercial model, i either get things that look like photographs of toys/statues, or i get gamecube type CGI, and i love it.
here are two little green freaks i got while trying to refine a prompt to generate my fursona. (i never succeeded, and i forget the exact prompt i used). these look like spore creations and the background looks like a bryce render. i really don't know why there's so much bad cgi in the datasets and why the model loves going for cgi specifically for dragons, but it got me thinking...
"hollow tree in a magical forest, video game screenshot", "C" model
"knights in a dungeon, video game screenshot", "C" model
i love the dreamlike video game environments and strange CGI characters it produces-- it hits that specific era of video games that i grew up with super well.
part 3: use cases
if you've seen any of the visual art i've done to accompany my music projects, you know that i love making digital collages of surreal landscapes:
(this post is getting image heavy so i'll wrap up soon)
i'm interested in using this technology more, not as a replacement for my digital collage art, but along with it as just another tool in my toolbox. and of course...
... this isn't out of lack of skill to imagine or draw scifi/fantasy landscapes.
thank you for reading such a long post! i hope you got something out of this post; i think it's a good look into the "experimentation phase" of getting into a new medium. i'm not going into my post-processing / GIMP stuff in this post because it's already so long, but let me know if you want another post going into that!
good-faith discussion and questions are encouraged but i will disable comments if you don't behave yourselves. be kind to each other and keep it P.L.U.R.

Linux update! (And a few Nvidia tips)
After a dreadful day of trying to make this work, I'm reporting that The Sims 2 finally works on my new Linux system! 😭❤️ Admittedly I have made my own life harder setting this up, but the most important thing I've learned from this experience and thought it might worth sharing:
Before you try to install TS2 on your Linux, make sure that you have your graphics card's driver updated!
When I first installed The Sims 2 on Linux it was incredibly laggy and choppy, because the default Nouveau driver didn't work well enough with my Nvidia card. After I installed the Nvidia driver from the built in driver manager, the game just straightup crashed.
Then I had to find out that Mint's driver manager couldn't install the newest driver for my card (RTX 3070), and even when installed, it didn't work. 😂
So if you have an Nvidia card and struggling or planning to install Linux in the future, below the cut are a few useful tips that I've discovered in the depths of the Internet:
Check what driver the official Nvidia site recommends for your GPU. - I did this and it showed driver version 570.
2. I think this is optional, but open your terminal and type the cmd: sudo apt update - this will trigger Linux to update its driver list.
3. Open Driver Manager, and see if the recommended driver (570 in my case is available). For me it was not available, only the 550, this was my issue.
3.1. If you can see your required driver, awesome, install it from the driver manager and skip to step 5. 3.2. If not, you have to use this PPA. -> Meaning you have to open your terminal and enter the following commands (when I list multiple commands to run, first type the first one, press enter, then type the next one, press enter etc.): sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ ppa sudo apt update You can also find installation guide on the link above, but it's basically this. 4. Now you have to restart your system, and repeat Step 3. of this list. The newest driver should show up in your Driver Manager now, install it.
5. After installing, open your terminal and type the following command: inxi -G -> this will allow us to check if the driver works properly. Shock, it did not for me :D When working properly, it should look like this:
Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.11 with: Xwayland v: 23.2.6 driver: X: loaded: nvidia gpu: nvidia,nvidia-nvswitch resolution: 1:1920x1080~60Hz 2: 1920x1080~60Hz When not working, it looks like this: Example 1: Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.11 with: Xwayland v: 23.2.6 driver: X: loaded: nouveau unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa failed: nvidia
6. This is the thread that helped me fix this problem. You have to scroll down to the Nvidia Graphics troubleshooting tips.
7. I had to add this "kernel boot parameter": nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 into the system. On this link you can see how to add it either temporarily or "permanently" (meaning you don't have to add it every time you start your system, but it is removable).
To add it permanently, you have to type the following commands into your terminal:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nvidia_drm.fbdev=1" sudo update-grub
8. After you added it, reboot your system, and when it starts again, check if the parameter is there with the command: cat /proc/cmdline
9. If it's there, run the inxi -G command again, and see if it looks like it should.
10. If not, you might have to update the Kernel version of your Linux, which you can do in the Update Manager/View/Linux Kernels menu. I had to update mine from 6.8 to 6.11.
After all this you should be good to install the game, I made my life so much harder than it was necessarily so I hope my research on how to deal with an Nvidia Graphics card with Sims 2 on Linux is helpful to some of you. 😂

Hi Kemie!
I have a question, I'm thinking about investing in PC and I was curious what PC setup do you use. I was scrolling through your Tumblr for past 10minutes but I can't find any post about it so I just wanted to ask, sorry if you published something about it already but I really can't find anything.
I love the quality of your content and your content too of course. Your sims are beautiful and have heartwarming vibe to them. Keep going and don't listen to haters. You're my favorite sims content creator out there <3.
Sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language :(.
hii! ♡ what a coincidence! someone asked me what my pc's specs are but i answered right as you sent this question! you couldn't have seen it yet so just in case, i'm going to list everything i use to make content so that everything can be listed in one post:

What would Henry Masterson's gaming PC be like?

Out of all the thoughts I have... and have had many times... I decided to pick one that appeared just now, lol
I shall take today's PCs as the reference point, since who knows what the future shall bring aaand the technology-related predictions in TFA are quite different I think. Aka what if bro was to get one nowadays.
I think that Henry would totally go for an Intel+Nvidia build (,,WHAT IS AMD?? SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING FOR BROKE NOOBZ.")
And he would overclock that CPU so hard the heaters in his room would lose their jobs (but Idk which one could it be since Idc about Intel lol)
When it comes to applying thermal paste, it would be the dot type and he'd put too little of it. If he had an air cooler for it, he would forget to take off the protective foil and not realize that for a few days. Unsure if the case's fan directions would be messed up, maybe he'd get one with inbuilt fans? And if he was to get an AIO, maybe it'd be a decent one.
For GPU, I am thinking about GTX 1660 Ti or RTX 3060. Depending on upgrading, how many years it would be used, money, yes. Also overclocked, Henry doesn't know what undervolting is, water could be boiled thanks to it.
And now for the PSU (power supply)... I started hesitating here so Imma say that maybe he'd consider the wattage properly, actually? Yeah, I dare to say that this part wouldn't get messed up, tbh.
For the other features: relatively random motherboard (he'd go for one which has most of the stuff inbuilt, but wouldn't mind if it didn't), SSD: as many terabytes as he could get, 64GB of RAM. And I almost forgot about another crucial thing ToT but anyways I think he'd go for AM4 CPU socket and DDR4 RAM, the fives being too fresh for him, lol. Also: Linux as the operating system.
Lastly, fish tank PC case! Black for the color, rainbow RGB everywhere, that thing would be glowing brighter than the Star of Bethlehem and give seizures 24/7
And yeah he'd use ray tracing (everywhere) if he could. I am not going to delve into graphics settings because I have zero clue about like half of this stuff ;-;
Do I know a decent amount of stuff about PCs and have any experience? Absolutely not. Did I want to yap? Yes. Is it somehow accurate and consistent? Probably not 😭

FAQs: Prepare to plunge into Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest expansion
(Please note that Secret Mode and The Chinese Room are based in the UK, with our working times being Monday - Friday 9AM - 5PM BST.)
Hey everyone.
Ahead of the launch of Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest, we wanted to make these short FAQs to help you prepare for your dive into the wreckage of the Beira D.
Q) When is Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest releasing, and on what platforms?
A) Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest launches Wednesday 18th June at 10am BST/ 5am EST/ 2am PT on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox via PC and Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
Q) How much will Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest cost?

A bundle featuring Still Wakes the Deep and Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest can also be purchased for further savings.
Q) What is the premise or story of the Siren’s Rest expansion?
A) 1986. The Beira D is now a groaning steel catacomb interred in the inky depths of the North Sea. What really happened that December day in 1975, when communications to the mainland were severed and the rig sank without a trace? What answers can be given to families who still grieve, ten years on?
You are Mhairi. And you will find those answers. As the leader of a saturation dive to the wreck of the Beira D, you descend, a fragile light in the crushing dark. Your mission: uncover the fate of the crew and recover what remains of their passing.

A) Yes, you will need to have purchased Still Wakes the Deep to be able to buy Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest. You do not need to have played through Still Wakes the Deep, however we highly recommend doing so, as the events of Still Wakes the Deep: Siren’s Rest take place a decade after the end of Still Wakes the Deep.

I’ve been lurking your account for awhile and really like your Clone High oc!!! Can we get some more info/lore?

I'M SOOO EXCITED YOU WANT TO HEAR MORE ABOUT MY SUN TZU CLONE OH!!! Sorry if this isn't very clear it's because I'm not good with this sort of stuff I've had since August so like I got so so much
I'LL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER TO MORE IF NEED BE I HAVE SO MUCH SO CLICK BELOW FOR THE WORD WALL YOU'RE ABOUT TO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR!! :D
His inspiration stems from a lot of things like my irl friends, him being the opposite of Confucius, other stuff and a bit of the clonefather himself so yeah it's a doozy how much I got.
So, baseline is because he's a clone of the war general, strategist and philosopher I was like "yeah no this dude would mostly be a gamer for stuff that requires strategy and winning like League of Legends (I'm sorry)", I pin him as the type of gamer who'd have hundreds of games on steam clocking no less than 300 hours each and has a huge variety of stuff he plays but he can't stand some like minecraft because the world is too vast for him. Also he likes playing his games ranked and he's a rather good sport in games.
So like you know the shadow government right, like because Sun Tzu is one of those clones who in fact inherited the talents of their clonefathers and is able to utilize it really well, they're like "ohhh shit he could actually be like the legendary general of his clonefather" but he doesn't care at all he uses whatever tactic and strategy and psychology wit he inherited into gaming.
He's a pretty well known name because he's insane when it comes to gaming and winning esports competitons and whatnot so it brings to Confucius right because Confucius would've caught wind of it and want to grab him to do podcasts with him, in attempts to buttering Sun into doing so he got attached and clingy along the way and his entire dynamic with Sun just wound up being that because Sun doesn't actually have that many friends thanks to his gaming hyperfixation.
And like upbringing is,,, how do I put this
His upbringing like, his foster parents right, is different from confu in the sense I want it to be a household where he feels loved despite not having shown it because everyone's got their own boundaries. In my head, dad, mom, 3 triplet brothers so his dad looks like dude nukem, mom is a psych op, brothers look like replica toy soldiers, navy, airforce and field soldier respectively. The reason why he just wound up being a gamer was due to hand me downs from his brother and he got so hyperfixated at it he'd rather do nothing but that. Like he has nothing to do with the theme and aesthetic his family got like it's to the point the interior of the house is hella military heavy and shit and if you go into sun tzu's room it's soundproofed RTX light hell. Organized mess setup.
His personality I'd say is very blunt and direct, doesn't really care about his image, he's mellow but has a rather hyperactive side to him too, his temper is rather calm nerve but can be flicked like a switch but it's so hard to really do so but if he's angered he's sure to actually scare people without having to raise his fists. He knows how to talk people into submission and such if he really has to I think. His gaming addiction certainly did stunt or inhibit a lot of aspects in him but he doesn't really mind it as long as he has fun.
He's the kind of guy who'd be good at everything he does pretty easily but it doesn't seem to matter because like all he does is play video games for like bajillions of hours so it's not like it's really going to go anywhere but there so he's like, someone you know has potential but depending on how, or well, how the shadow government sees it is wasted potential.
He's super camera shy and has stage fright so he's not very good at performing for a crowd, he's also cursed whenever it comes to being in a camera because whenever his picture gets taken it wounds up scary or blurry and he's unable to fake a smile for the camera and while he likes taking pictures it's just that pictures taken by him are often garbage too like, when he takes food pics, it's AFTER he's eaten so people won't even be able to tell what he has eaten and that he just generally doesn't give that much thought into it either.
Few additional quirks include that he's aroace, he could actually get in shape very easily if he wanted to but since he's sitting on a gaming chair most of the time he just wound up tubby, if he were to exercise it's freakishly quick but he can also return to being chubby too. He's also severely addicted to G-Fuel even if it doesn't really work with him.
In regards to gaming he's able to not sleep for days at a time just to play over the sheer will but in turn he would have to sleep a lot when he's completely tired like he's THAT PASSIONATE (addicted).
Idk if this is understandable or anything but wow this is a word wall but I know I have a lot more than that I'm just not used to doing text posts. I'd be happy to answer other stuff regarding him!

Could I request Aigis with her s/o going out to adopt cats? Like the s/o is obsessed with them and from Aigis' social link she seems to like them a bit. Appreciate the fics you write dude, they're really good!
persona 3: adopting cats!! (aigis)
notes: gn!reader, fluff
you thought having one animal in the dorm was enough, but when aigis raised to mitsuru the possibility of a cat being in the dorm... you immediately were on aigis' side. you loved cats - like, probably more than life itself.
not only were cats like, the cutest things on earth, but aigis said it might help alleviate anxiety and stress and promote responsibiltiy. she said she searched her databases on all the benefits of owning a cat, and you were ready for her to lecture to mitsuru for hours! thank god mitsuru caved so quickly.
and so, you and aigis were on a quest to find the perfect cat!
you two headed to the nearest animal shelter and began browsing their selection. the owners even asked if you'd like to play with a few of them before picking one.
though just picking one would be difficult, as they were all so cute and charming and just!!! ahg!!!
aigis definitely noted your cuteness aggression and warned against it, though she herself was rendered speechless when nearly all of the cats wanted to climb on her lap.
you chocked it up to cats liking to sleep on keyboards or warm furnaces. aigis was definitely heating up a bit herself!!!!
you two eventually walked out with the cutest tortoiseshell cat and tried to think of names.
aigis wanted to name her RTX 3060 but you quickly vetoed that plan, even though aigis' pout at your decision was adorable. you'd just have to name her with the rest of sees!
a/n: i think aigis naming things after different types of computer specs is sooooooo funny

Greetings yet again folks! Before today's news i should ask this: what would you think when wearable tech is mentioned? AR/VR glasses? A smart watch? a pair of fancy glasses? nfc based products or was it something else for you?
what if i tell you there is a battery that is so stretchable and bendable that can be tailored between linings of your clothes now what would you think?
Meet the age of stretchable batteries people!
in that case i should mention when people of today was so busy with nonsense politics and rightist or leftist ideas there were quite a race between the biggest tech schools and companies for manufacturing this tech such as apple, samsung, stanford, Yokohama National University, zotach (japan based wearable tech company), sydney's UNCW, Australian research comity and more.. you get the idea..
so what is this tech in its core?

basically building more softer and more long term reliable materials to replace our common daily use batteries

in term of materials it nearly uses our common li-on batteries but these are mainly works like electrodes and often use polymers, hydrogels, and other flexible materials for electrodes and electrolytes. we can see in recent inovations include the use of stretchable conductors like gold nanowires or carbon nanotubes.
BUT what these mambo, jambo, wombo, combo means for public eye?
much longer active use time, higher adaptability, flexible form factor yet lower energy and power density.
for now this tech has been used in certain medical implant cases, wearable techs, tv's, and watches for now but there is some attempts to imply this in to textile industry recently..
and japan is seems like ahead of the race for now with Zotac’s VR GO 4.0 backpack

this is a backpack pc and its power source is tailored between in entire foam/ fiber pad. this "pc" is specifically made for VR/AR and streaming which includes
11th Gen Intel Core Mobile i7-11800H processor, an NVIDIA RTX A4500 graphics card with 20GB of GDDR6 memory and 7,168 CUDA cores, 16GB (32GB maximum) of DDR4 RAM, an M.2 slot for storage, a 2.5′ SATA 3 hard drive/SSD bay for storage, three USB 3.1 Type-A ports, a single USB 3.1 type-C port, DisplayPort, and a 12V DC outlet, all powered by dual 86.4 watt-hour hot-swappable batteries.
like i said this tech is still under developement stage and people still trying to make this tech better than other compettitives...
time will show us what will it gonna be turn out at the end..
lastly.. see you guys tomorrow...

On RWBY's Klein Sieben, and system jokes...
When looking for more information about Klein's DID, I found this post which bothered me for several reasons. The post was about RWBY's depiction of mental health overall, and it made a lot of good points on other disorders, and a lot of bad points.
But I only care about the part on Klein.
First, I think that it's silly to expect mental disorders to be called by name in a fantasy setting. In contemporary settings, you should absolutely confirm disorders the characters have by name. But hearing someone talk about DID, PTSD, Autism or Schizophrenia is going to immediately take you out of a fantasy story.
It's the same reason Shallan in The Stormlight Archive is only technically confirmed to have DID outside of the story.
But my bigger problem comes down to the argument revolving around using the disability as a joke. The reason is that these are the same types of jokes systems make all the time.
I've been in the plural community for a couple years, and jokes about not being able to decide on little things with the rest of the system, or sharing personal experiences where one headmate will order something at a restaurant only to switch out and leave the next headmate with a plate of something they don't actually like, are super common.
Plenty of system jokes and memes utilize this same premise.
In a comedy show like (the non-canon) RWBY Chibi, it makes sense for similar jokes to be made using a similar premise as well.
youtube
So what is the issue then? If systems make these same jokes about themselves, is it WHO is making the jokes? Are system jokes only acceptable when they come from verified systems?
Pluralphobia And The Danger of Gatekeeping Who Can Make Plural Jokes in Media
I can understand that some people are burned and are wary of how singlets will handle plurality in media.
I think that there's an idea with some that if you're not a system, then you can't write jokes about systems or plurality in media. And I think this thought process is extremely dangerous to the plural community.
It places actual plural writers into a position where the only way they're allowed to write about plurality is by publicly disclosing their own to the world.
This is dangerous with any sort of plurality. Whether DID, tulpas, spiritual, etc. Publicly revealing that information can endanger your relationships with friends and family. It can make you a target of harassment. (Look at what happened to Aimkid.) It even can endanger job prospects.
In the case of disclosing DID, this would be disclosing that you likely had severe trauma as a child, which could lead to public denial from family members who didn't know, or were themselves responsible.
An environment where plurals have to be out of the closet to make plural content is a dangerous one for everybody.
The Solution: Combating Singlet Normativity
Here's my solution: Criticize every work of media that features plurality with the understanding that someone in the writer's room could be plural.
Currently, we live in a singletnormative world where everyone is assumed to be a singlet unless otherwise specified. We need to break this perception. We need to do this by normalizing systemhood.
And statistically, it's not like it's that improbable. Some high estimates of DID show it appear in as much as 3% of the population. There are several writers involved in RWBY. And plurals tend to be drawn to writing plural characters, making it statistically more likely at least one of the people who created Klein could have DID or OSDD themselves.
Maybe one or more of the writers have DID. Maybe they don't. But if you treat every writer as if they're a singlet when you don't know if they're plural or not, because you see singlet as the default, you create an environment where closeted plurals can't write about their own experiences in fiction.
The Importance of Klein
In the RTX video that confirmed Klein had DID, the person asking the question had DID themselves and talked about how happy it made them to see someone like them. To get a character they could relate to, one that's not portrayed as a villain as so many other DID characters tend to be in media.
Maybe Klein isn't perfect representation, and I'm sure some people will take issue with some aspects of his portrayal, but no representation is ever going to be perfect.
What matters is that Klein presented a character that some DID systems out there could relate to and see themselves in, in a way that doesn't stigmatize or demonize the disorder. And on top of that, he's a beloved character by most of the fandom which can hopefully build acceptance of real life plurality. And that's something that should be celebrated.
This Plural Acceptance Week, I would love to help create a positive environment in the plural community that encourages systems to write their own Kleins. To make the next character that systems can connect with like this person connected with Klein. Whether DID systems, endogenic systems, tulpas, daemonists, etc. We should strive to support positive plural characters in media where we see them.
More Klein from RWBY Chibi
Since I showed the episode with him ordering noodles, which was his second appearance in RWBY Chibi, I thought it would also be fun to share his introduction to the Chibi series too!
