Design: Ian Moore Architects

Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

The Dodds House project is the restoration of a one-bedroom house designed by Ian Moore in 1998 and completed in 2001, which had been unsympathetically altered by a previous owner.

A rooftop bedroom has been removed to reinstate the original louvred roof terrace, a roller door removed from the courtyard wall and numerous internal alterations have been reversed.

The new owner also requested Ian Moore Architects to fully furnish the house with pieces appropriate to the architectural language and material palette of the original.

The bold two-storey yellow joinery element, containing kitchen storage, integrated refrigerator and laundry on the lower level and wardrobe on the upper level, links the levels both physically and visually and is offset against a neutral palette of white walls and ceilings, silver anodised aluminium, grey rubber and white epoxy flooring.

Jean Nouvel’s ‘Less’ furniture range was selected for coffee table, desks, bookshelves, storage units and bedside tables. A vintage Eames segmented base dining table and fibreglass arm shell chairs, Jean-Marie Massaud ‘Kennedee’ sofas and Alias ‘Frame’ series outdoor seating complete the furniture. All of the furniture pieces appear ‘light’ and either ‘float’ above the floor or are on slender legs.

The interior design of this house is conceptually linked to the architecture, lightweight, open, blurring the junction between inside and out. Comfortable without clutter, clean and bold, with a clarity of space and form.

Jean Aiton’s 1992 Fox-Body LX is Basically an 8-Second Renegade Street Car

The Mustang has been around for over five continuous decades, so when it comes to building that dream car, the possibilities are seemingly endless. For Jean Aiton, that dream car was built into an 8-second Fox-body street car. “I’ve been told it’s a Renegade car that I force on the street,” Jean says. “I built the car keeping the NMRA True Street class in mind, but more than anything I built it for my enjoyment and to remain a street car.

Jean, a Sergeant at the Huntsville Police Department, left no stone unturned in his search for his perfect Mustang build. Having owned different Mustangs along with several Fox-body Mustangs over the years, he researched many different generations and drivetrain combinations, but he kept coming back to that familiar Fox-body platform.

Jean stumbled across this 1992 Mustang LX on a local Craigslist ad back in 2011. The car was powered by a stock-block 347ci engine with a Vortech V-7 YS supercharger, Lunati Voodoo cam, 170cc Dart Pro 1 heads, a T5 transmission, and 3.73 gears. Exhaust flowed through 1-5/8 shorty headers, a 2.5-inch off-road mid-pipe, Dynomax mufflers and stock tailpipes.

He met the owner at Huntsville Dragway where he watched it make a 6.88-second run at 105 mph in the eighth-mile with easy launching and granny shifting. He knew the car made decent power and had potential despite its stock computer, Super FMU, heavy wheels, stock chassis and all factory suspension.

Jean Aiton, Sergeant at the Huntsville Police Department, built his dream car, a killer 8-second Fox-body street car. After searching different Mustang platforms and combinations for his build, he knew he had to build a mean Fox-body, and he left no stone unturned. Jeans says everyone tells him its a Renegade car he forces on the street. “To each their own, but for me, nothing delivers that feeling of a sledgehammer to the face like a nasty Fox-body.”

Originally the car was painted Deep Emerald Green but is now slathered in Jewel Green Metallic after the body shop used the wrong paint code for a 1993 Bronco. Heath Terry, owner of Southside Rods and Resto in Arab, Alabama, spent 50 hours wet-sanding and fixing the mistakes made by the previous painter.

Jean’s Fox is now powered by a Ford Racing A4 302-based 8.2-inch deck block bored and stroked to a 349ci with a compression ratio of 10:1. An Eagle 5.4 crank works in conjunction with Diamond pistons via Eagle H-rods and a custom grind on a Comp hydraulic-roller camshaft. The engine was built by Dale Meers Racing Engines in Buffalo, Kentucky.

Built by Ron Sharpe of Advanced Airflow Engineering, Trick Flow Specialties heads sit atop the engine with Twisted Wedge 225cc intake runners, and a Holley Systemax ported upper and lower manifold that was previously installed on Alton Clements’ championship NMRA Renegade car. Feeding the thirst are Holley 120 lb/hr fuel injectors. Titanium intake and exhaust valves that measure 2.08 and 1.60, and he installed Crower shaft mount rocker arms. Oil is pumped through a Melling oil pump, and a Milodon 7-quart rear sump pan seals the bottom end.

“The heads were ported for the NMRA Renegade class. They were formerly on Mike Post’s Renegade car,” Jean tells us. Extensive work on both the intake, exhaust ports and bowl work with a lot of attention paid to mid-lift flow. It features titanium retainers with 8-degree keepers and locks, 1.550-inch diameter dual springs on intake and exhaust with a damper. The Seat pressure is 150 lbs. and 440 lbs. open at .600-inch lift.

To really amp up the power, a Vortech V-7 YSi with a max of 28 psi is mated to a custom throttle-body and features a Vortech 50mm cog crank pulley; the upper cog pulley varies depending on running a street or race tune. A standalone Speed Density MAF helps keep things in check, and a Blowzilla blow off valve is mounted on the 4-inch intake pipe. With the Meziere 55gpm water pump, custom radiator and twin fans pushing 3,412 cfm, keeping cool in Alabama hasn’t been an issue.

“I stayed with a supercharger rather than a turbo for a couple of reasons. I have always enjoyed the sound of the supercharger and the exhaust with the more aggressive cam profile than a turbo combo. I enjoy the car being so aggressive sounding and that also fits the look of the car,” Jean explains.

Powering Jean’s Fox-body is a Vortech supercharged Ford Racing A4 302-based 8.2-inch deck bored and stroked to a 349ci with a compression ratio of 11:1. It also features Trick Flow Specialties heads (ported for Mike Post’s NMRA Renegade car) with Twisted Wedge 220cc intake runners, and a Holley Systemax ported upper and lower manifold that was previously installed on Alton Clements’ championship Renegade car. Eagle crank and H-rods and Diamond pistons help make up the rotating assembly with the help of a custom grind hydraulic-roller Comp cam. Holley 120 lb/hr fuel injectors help feed the fuel thirst.

Adding to the orchestra are 1 7/8-inch powder coated Hooker headers that flow down to a modified 3-inch X-pipe and Spintech Super Pro Street 9000 series mufflers.

Huges Performance from Phoenix, Arizona, built the Extreme Duty 4L80E with a fully manual valvebody and transbrake. It also features a PST steel driveshaft complete with a Stifflers safety loop, and a Derale cooler with a fan keeps everything at temp. The 4,000-stall helps launch the car along with a Custom PTC Billet lockable converter. “With the 4L80E I can enjoy even highway speeds because of the overdrive. With the ability to lock my converter, at 70mph in overdrive with the converter locked I’m only at 1,200 rpm’s,” Jean says. Shifting power is provided by a Kilduff Machine shifter with polished sticks, a powder coated knobs, and transbrake switch.

Ignition components consist of an MSD 7531 Digital 7 ignition box and billet low profile distributor with crank trigger, Ford Racing wires, HVC II race coil, and NGK plugs. The 200-amp one-wire alternator was previously used in Brian Mitchell’s championship NMRA Renegade car.

Retrograde’s white hot Triumph T100R Daytona desert sled

It’s hard to express just how much Mark Drury loves vintage Triumphs. In his own words, he’s a “self-confessed Meriden groupie,” but his love for the marque is even more evident in the projects he takes on.

Based in Northampton in England, Mark runs the workshop Retrograde Mechanica as an after-hours endeavor. And more Triumphs pass through his doors than any other make… regardless of the condition they’re in. This 1967 Triumph Daytona 500, for example, was pretty trashed when Mark took on the rebuild.

“This little one all started in a straight swap with a mate of mine,” he tells us. “I fancied another Daytona, and he wanted a 350 ‘Tri-Greeves’ that I had. The stock Triumph looked tidy enough, so a straight swap was done.”

“Of course things are never quite as they appear: my mate had obtained the bike in another deal and not really looked at it too much. It wasn’t a runner, the swingarm had seized, the subframe was as bent as a nine bob note and the tank was leaking from the usual spots.”

“The plan was hatched to build a tidy little desert sled-influenced bike for green-lane fun and the odd loony toons race, like the Malle events and Race the Waves.”

Surprisingly, when Mark tore into the motor, he discovered that there were new pistons, rings and rods inside, with a 60 cc over-bore. “The reason it was sold as a non-runner seemed to be a broken cam follower and a bent push rod,” he explains.

“So the sludge trap was cleaned and everything vapor-blasted or polished. Then reassembled as per Mr Turner’s specifications—albeit with quite a few tuning tricks from the pages of Stan Shenton’s awesome Triumph Tuning book, and an Electrex World ignition.”

“It’s truly a first kicker, every time without fail.”

Mark had some help from his friend Nick Dyble on the bottom end work, but did the rest of the rebuild, and the tuning, himself. The motor now sits on custom CNC-machined plates; other fixes include a new gear selector mechanism, and new clutch plates and rollers.

“Later I’d find that the head was more than a little warped” says Mark, “and I’ve since installed a NOS single carb head.”

To sort out the frame, Mark loaded it into his van and headed over to his buddy Neil Adams’ place, Made in Metal, for some TLC. The guys lopped off the headstock mounts and a bunch of brackets, then fabricated new ones.

They also straightened and braced the subframe for added rigidity at the back, remade the shock mounts, and replaced all the hardware with stainless steel bits. Neil also helped Mark shape the stainless steel exhausts, and he got rid of the leaks in the fuel tank, too.

The running gear wasn’t neglected either. The front forks were upgraded to a newer shuttle valve setup and treated to progressive springs. And the rear shocks were swapped for a set of Betors, dialed in for Mark’s weight.

Mark refers to the OEM 7” TLS front brake as his brake of choice. So he gave it a full refresh, which included lathing the parts true, polishing them, and fitting stainless arms and green compound trials pads. Then he laced up new Excel rims with stainless spokes, with an Ensign trials tire up front, and a Dunlop MX tire at the back.

Up in the cockpit, Mark has polished the yokes smooth, then modified them to tidy up the steering lock hole and add a new cable guide. The steering damper (and matching brake rod adjuster) are his own parts, turned on his lathe.

The handlebars are one-off stainless steel units from Front Street Cycle in the USA, fitted with a Tommaselli throttle, Amal levers, Biltwell Kung Fu grips and color-matched Venhill cables. The lanyard-equipped kill switch is from Pingle.

Mark also added a fork brace (not yet fitted in these photos), and a rear fender of undetermined origin that happened to fit.

“The number plate is spring loaded and quickly detachable as I have a habit of clocking it with my boots,” Mark jokes. “The bike’s three inches taller than stock and I’m a shortarse, so it was kinda inevitable.”

The Daytona is now sporting a really nice oil tank, too. “It actually came from little John Hateley, no.99 himself,” says Mark. “If you’ve never heard of this man look him up, he makes fascinating reading and is an absolute top chap. He had a small run of these Webco copies made and it suits the bike perfectly.”

Finishing touches include a seat from Hayden Roberts at Hello Engine in California, and a killer flake job on the tank by Flakey Dave Addis, who’s done about ten of Mark’s bikes already. Gwizz Cycles in Australia sent over a new gas cap, and a bunch of parts were sent off to Redditch Shotblasing for powder coating.

“The crowning touch is a set of NOS Barons Speed Shop white rubber pegs and shift kit,” says Mark. “If anyone has any more of these, I will pay generous amounts of money!”

“The bike’s now fully run in and I have to say I love those Daytona cams. It’s fast, light and a lot of fun on the green lanes, and is by far the most used out of the five Triumphs I’ve currently in the garage.”

“A few more changes have since been made, some quickly removable baffles in a ‘snuff or not’ style to make it a little more polite on the UK’s green lane network. And a bit more lock wire, as it does get thrown around quite a bit, and a nylon chain tensioner.”

There’s not a lot of desert in Northamptonshire, but we’d happily ride this Daytona absolutely anywhere—sand or no sand.
