Friday, November 8: Soilwork, "Overload"

Figure Number Five was the first time Soilwork recorded an album knowing it would receive at least some consideration from international audiences, but while it continued their ongoing evolution from their more conventionally death metal beginnings, it also retained some of the wooliness (and amateurishness) that made their previous two records both endearing and a bit bushleague.  “Overload” captured this transition by both illustrating their growth as performers (particularly in Bjӧrn “Speed” Strid’s vocals) as well their ongoing efforts to learn how to write actual songs- there were plenty of hooks, and the riffs were robust and catchy, but there was a certain awkwardness in the arrangements that kept the track from having a clear throughline.  It was weird, but by the same token that strangeness made Soilwork stand out and gained them traction on the scene.  And “Overload” was one of those tunes that likewise distinguished itself with its unconventional approach, one that the band would soon outgrow in ways that mostly benefited them but also reflected a loss of innocence.

Yeah I thought I was being real funny with that one 😂 well, it's not a secret that I have a big crush on Fives, I mean who wouldn't? And in my self insert lore a LOT of clones are attracted to Brea because let's face it; she's hot, she's powerful, and she treats them like human beings and not tools!

So the way the regular universe goes is that most if not all of the 501st have crushes on Brea, but they know that Rex is in love with her so they don't really go further than admiration from afar. Fives is definitely the boldest with his teasing of Rex/flirting with Brea...but what if it was a little more than that? In the AU, Brea actually...encountered Fives before one night at 79s (clone bar on Coruscant for those who don't know) though he didn't know she was a Jedi at the time, and a commander at that! So imagine his surprise when one day Anakin announces that they'll be aided on their current mission by a trusted friend of his and it's his one night stand he can't stop thinking about AJNRGJGKA

I think it'd be cute if he sort of avoided taking his helmet off around her so she wouldn't know, but Echo got the tea from him so when she addresses the two of them during a rest period he's like "come on, Fives, show some respect and talk to your Commander face to face!" And basically forces him to reveal himself and Brea is...mortified to say the least 😂 she doesn't necessarily make a habit of fooling with clones for this exact reason, it just kind of happened! And I imagine this leads to some unspoken feelings between the two of them, but they keep it casual/respectful.

And that's where Rex comes in! Everything that happens in the normal timeline still happens with him, and over time they fall for each other, and now Brea is caught between her feelings for TWO troopers! It's double the trouble 😂 and Fives (who's kept his past rendezvous with her a secret out of respect for her boundaries and reputation) is totally willing to back off for Rex, who he also respects. Rex is a smart guy tho, he'd sniff out that something was up and after a frank conversation and some time to think about it...they decide to just share her :3

It's a win-win for all! And that's the Fives AU!
