When I started #Keto 4 weeks ago, I felt so fatigued. Worse, when I would try to run, I felt like I was moving in wet concrete. Even though my good friend, Bobbie Jo, told me to give my body time to become adapted to Keto. I was skeptical. She said that once my body is adapted, my energy and stamina will really pick up. So, I took her word. Two weeks after said conversation: Oh my goodness... She wasn't kidding. Tonight, I felt like I was a running powerhouse! I set out to run 3.10 miles. But, suddenly, I was at nearly 4 miles. So, I said, "screw it" and kept running. This is the longest distance I've ran since the Flying Pig. You see that face? That is the face of a woman who trained for 6 months, for this day. It is the face of a woman getting close to the finish line of running 13.1 miles and wondering, "where the 🤬 is the finish line?" It is the face of a woman who is losing a toenail on her left big toe because of all the running she has done over the last 6 months. It is the face of a woman who had no running experience prior to beginning her training for this day, and couldn't run more than a quarter mile at the beginning of this journey. This is a woman who doesn't possess the body of a runner, but ran a half marathon within 3 hours and 4 minutes; with a total of about 1 mile of her walking throughout this race. And yet, she feels like a damn rockstar. This is a woman who isn't going to stop at just the Flying Pig. In 9 days, I will be doing one of the most physically challenging things I’ve ever done without any real experience, grace, or body build. The emotions are hard to explain; from where I started in this journey, to this point. I am nervous, excited, scared, and proud. In 9 days, I am running a half marathon. That is 13.1 miles. I know there will be moments I need to walk. And that is ok. There will be moments when I want to cuss, or probably cry. And that might be normal. I may want to give up. But, I won’t. I have come too far to do that. Unless you know the struggles I’ve had with fitness goals and even support (in the past) toward these goals, then you won't truly understand how important this moment in my life will be. I don’t fit the mold of a runner, but I won’t stop to get there.

5 months ago, I finished a half marathon. Only to wake up, the following day to severe pain and inflammation. For nearly 3 months, I could barely walk and I certainly couldn't even run. I spent those 3 months stretching and strength training my hips and legs to get back to this point in my running. If you asked me in January if I was ready for the Flying Pig, my answer would have been an apprehensive "Yes". Because, while my hip was still healing, I knew I would eventually make it here. I just wasn't sure I'd be here, with my running, so close to the Flying Pig. Life With Vertigo

Imagine, if you will, being dizzy and disoriented at all hours of your waking day. Your brain is working double time to adjust your vestibular system in order to keep your balance. And when you workout, it is working triple time. Imagine after a workout or the end of a workday, being SO EXHAUSTED, and having escalated dizziness and disorientation. Most days, you wake up feeling depleted and tired... 8 or 9 hours of sleep simply doesn't feel like enough. Imagine doing your most favorite activity, such as hiking, and needing a full day or even two, to allow your body to recover, afterward all because your body and YOUR BRAIN (remember, your brain is working over time in order to keep your vestibular system regulated) are over exerted. Imagine working a full workday in front of 2 screens, as a mental health therapist, processing with a client or gathering mental health information from one screen and quickly typing a note or the information you're gathering from another screen. Imagine how emotionally and mentally exerting your job is... On top of your brain doing all the functions it is meant to do in order to do your job, AND your brain working overtime to adjust (again) your vestibular system. Imagine how difficult it is, after that workday, to try to go to the gym because all the professionals say it will help you... But you're EXHAUSTED! Imagine having a full night of sleep, waking up, and going to the gym to do light strength training, and to run a couple of miles... Only to feel like you could really use a nap afterward.
Imagine your dizziness be so severe that many days, you feel nauseated and want to throw up. Imagine following all the recommendations given to you, only to feel SLIGHT relief. Imagine feeling frustrated and defeated most days by your symptoms. Imagine feeling limited by your symptoms because you can't do things you were once able to do with ease. This is what my life is like, since the end of 2019. And yet... Til' I Collapse, I Refuse to Give Up!

"...sometimes you just feel tired, you feel weak. And when you feel weak, you feel like you want to just give up. But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength. From start to finish. I pushed myself a little more today. I would be lying if I said my legs don't feel sore. But, I remember being here at the start of my running journey and now reflecting back at how much the soreness, sweat, and hard work made me motivated to come back for more.
