hi! 💜💜💜 the official summary for this fic is "five times jason took a knife and the one time he was gifted one", going from his childhood to his red hood days and trying to map out his relationships with knives, because they're very sexy and he should definitely use them more in canon. i like the 5 + 1 format, it's easy to write small snippets of a larger idea and explore it, especially since there's almost always a "twist" on the main idea with the +1

“Jason?” His mom calls him from the living room, and it is sudden enough to startle him. The knife in his hand slips and the carrot he was trying to cut is replaced by his finger. He jerks his hand away but not fast enough to not hurt himself. He tries to keep quiet, but the cry of pain is out of his mouth before he can stop it. “Jason!” She calls again and appears in the doorway seconds later.

“Mom.” He smiles as she takes in the scene, he can see her looking him up and down before her tired eyes settle on his hands, and what he’s holding. He drops the knife but again, not fast enough, she still sees it.

“What are you doing?” She walks closer and grabs both of his wrists, turns his hand and spots the finger he hurt, the blood smeared on the tip. Her hands are cold but soft and he wants her to hold him until the end of time, he doesn’t want her to leave him.

“I wanted to help. You were sleeping, and I knew we would be hungry, so I tried to cut them.”

“Oh, my bunny.” She tugs him into a hug and squeezes him, not as tight as she used to, but it’s enough. “I don’t want you to use the big knives honey, they’re dangerous.” He nods and closes his eyes, reaching around her with his own arms. “You can set the table if you want to help. Alright?”

i do not mean this in a flippant way but genuinely one of the things that always shows up is Judaism. i end up either writing in Jewish characters or fics that i feel are very Jewish in nature

A 2023 The Old Guard Rec List

I spent most of 2023 trying to make a dent in my AO3 'to read' list rather than reading new fics, so I know I must've missed some fantastic fics from the year. But here are a few of my favorites posted in 2023 that I did read, in no particular order.

Overdrive -- @goldheartedsky T. Modern AU. When Booker's abusive wife finds out about his reciprocated feelings for Andy and disappears with the kids, Andy can't sit on the sidelines anymore. (Second in a series)

1. Are you named after anyone?

names are very important in my family, my father is part of a huge family and his last name Means Things (that are usually bad). so we don’t have his last name, but my siblings and i have family names as our middle names.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Yesterday. i finally opened the original art for hands (an iteration) that @shatterthefragments sent me and i just started bawling dkdjfnf

3. Do you have kids?

THAT is a complicated question but the answer is no. someday

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

i honestly don’t know….? i am very judgmental when it’s fun

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

it really depends on the context. the obvious is i notice their voices and their general body language. the work i do also means i’m very keyed into what people are saying and what they’re not saying.

6. What’s your eye color?

blue grey

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

both have their places in my heart! although emotionally i’m usually not able to handle happy endings, i just lose it and start crying skdjdnd

8. Any special talents?

myself and my siblings are incredibly musically gifted. we worked very hard at it but we also are naturally talented. i did the competition stuff and racked up a fair amount of trips and awards while i was at it (and some of those set into motion some of the most significant things in my life) but my magnum opus was playing Schelomo for my senior piece. it took a year of me and my wonderful very dedicated accompanist working our asses off to get it together. the man had to cut and paste the score to make it playable. incredible work on both our parts

10. What are your hobbies?

i have so many skdjdn i love to write and dance and play music, i do a lot of knitting and also fix our clothes with visible mending. i participate a lot in fandom and love writing prompt fills. i also make window stars (common where i grew up) and bead things if i get bored, i used to be able to make pretty sick beaded flowers but that fell out of my brain so i just make decorations now. i like writing letters to people but idk if that’s necessarily a hobby.

11. Do you have any pets?

yes! two wonderful cats, although one is being a significant drain on the wallet currently because of her health issues. she truly is my child

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

i am Not a sports person. i am a dancer though, classical ballet trained, did modern and contemporary for a while, and now do pole. i want to get back into contradancing once things get a little safer

13. How tall are you?

5’ 7” and i have a huge complex about it

14. Favorite subject in school?

biology, chemistry, and tbvh music. i thought i liked English but on reflection no

15. Dream job?

i don’t necessarily have a dream job bc i never dreamed of working but i would love to someday work in a museum. it always seemed really cool to me and with the planned grad school trajectory maybe i will!

three ships: marisa/asriel occupies the majority of my brainspace rn. this is no joke: everything related to the two of them that’s happened since the beginning of december have altered my brain chemistry for the worse. i’m on my hands and knees begging hbo/bbc/bad wolf to release the cut footage. alicia/will (the good wife) are another couple formed by infidelity, and the only ship other than masriel that have manage to break me. elizabeth/philip (the americans) are one of the most complex and fascinating tv relationships. idk what these three say about me, but i’m sure they say A LOT.

first ever ship: the first dynamic i remember being really intrigued by (though way too young to understand what romance or shipping even was) was monica and chandler from friends. the first ship to break me and the one that made me want more was definitely marisa/asriel.

last movie: puss in boots: the last wish was an absolute blast

JK western au: i think i’ve gone on enough about this one, ranger kyle and outlaw jason partner up in a western setting, plot ensues

Jason todd torture fic: a mismatch of many things i wanna try to do and talk about, showcasing jason’s skills as well as mentality and methods. he’s tortured in the context of a case, showing the before, during and after

Kyle whump for once: putting kyle through the ringer! talked about it here before, it started off as a short JK piece but i scrapped that one and now it’s a more canon-focused one on kyle only, unpacking the trauma that’s often glided over in his issues
