Frigate "Pallada" by Alexey Bogolubov
Tumblr media
Pallada (Russian: Паллада) was a sail frigate of the Imperial Russian Navy, most noted for its service as flagship of Vice Admiral Yevfimy Putyatin during his visit to Japan in 1853, which later resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Shimoda of 1855, establishing formal relations between the two countries. In addition to her diplomatic mission, her crew also conducted numerous geographical and natural studies in the Far East. She was scuttled by her own crew in the Crimean War due to the poor condition of her hull in 1855.
Pallada was built at the Admiralty Shipyard in St Petersburg, with her hull design based on the British frigate HMS President (1829), which in turn was based after an American frigate, President which had been captured as a prize of war by the Royal Navy during the War of 1812. The ship was intended from the start for use by members of the Russian imperial family on diplomatic missions, and Tsar Nicholas I issued an imperial rescript commanding that the vessel incorporate all of the latest innovations. After launching, she was based at Kronstadt with the Baltic Fleet and was assigned to the command of Captain Pavel Nakhimov, one of the ablest commanders in the Russian Navy. She entered active service in early August 1833.

Frigate Pallada by Constantin Cherepanov
Pallada was a three-masted frigate of wooden construction, with a transverse steel reinforcement skeleton in her hull. It was sheathed in copper sheets, to prevent destruction of the wood by marine organisms. A novelty on the Russian ships at the time was the use of portholes for lighting crew spaces on the lower deck.
In 1834, Pallada transported the future Frederick William IV of Prussia on a state visit to Russia. From 1835-1836 she served in various ports in the Baltic and in 1837 was tasked with carrying gold bullion to London on a special mission for the Russian embassy. She served until 1846 as a training ship for cadets. She underwent a complete overhaul from 1846–48, and afterwards was assigned to the Mediterranean, calling on Madeira and Lisbon in 1849 and was frequently the flagship for Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich of Russia.

Ukraine Destroys Russia’s Brand-New $65 Million Warship Sergei Kotov
Ukraine has destroyed the newest patrol ship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the $65 million Sergei Kotov, and left pro-Kremlin war reporters sulking.
“As a result of a strike by Magura V5 maritime drones, the Russian Project 22160 ship Sergei Kotov received damage to the stern, starboard and left sides,” Ukrainian military intelligence said in a statement.
“The fewer such ships, the fewer anti-aircraft missile systems will be deployed on them, meaning more opportunities for Ukrainian security and defense forces,” spokesman Andriy Yusov told local media, adding that more than 10 ambulances were spotted rushing to help the evacuated crew members. At least seven crew members were killed, Ukrainian authorities said.
Audio of what Ukraine described as an intercepted radio communication also appeared to capture a Russian commander reporting on the “tragic event” and destruction of the ship, lamenting that a helicopter had also been obliterated in the nighttime attack near the Kerch Strait.
The 308-foot, 1,700-ton ship entered the Black Sea Fleet in July 2022.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has yet to comment on the incident, though pro-Kremlin military bloggers begrudgingly admitted that Ukraine had pulled off the attack.
“If it continues like this, the Black Sea Fleet will have only catamarans and rubber banana boats for vacationers. It’s fucked,” wrote one popular pro-war Telegram channel.
The Sergei Kotov had been targeted in three previous attacks by Ukrainian forces before finally being taken out this time around. Noting that Russia had plenty of defenses in place to protect the ship, pro-war propagandist Alexander Kots said that “unfortunately, the enemy is also evolving.”
“The crew fought heroically until the end. … But this time it is a story without a happy ending,” he wrote on social media.
“The ship ‘Sergei Kotov’ sunk,” wrote former Vladimir Putin adviser Sergei Markov, calling it part of a “new type of war” in which “what matters most are the multitude of drones, space reconnaissance, and electronic warfare.”
“This is where we need to overtake the West,” he said.

I don't think grinding for currency is a good way to keep people engaged with Sky; on one hand TGC acknowledges that candle running has become a chore, but on the other, the ways they said they thought about to keep players active for at least half or more of an event revolves around grinding (either with the high prices or by adding yet another currency).
Also I can't put it into words well without sounding like I'm reaching but is anyone else confused by how AFK farmers were talked about ? Like I get the frustration because I've been in a server where everyone was asleep while trying to open doors, but I don't think "exploits" are the root of the problem.
Which leads me into my next comment, there's this push to make us social that quickly becomes suffocating when you're more introverted and don't always have the social batteries for that. Sky is a social game so I find the expectation that I should be helpful and courteous to strangers reasonable, but expecting and forcing players to constantly interact with eachother becomes exhausting, especially since you can't properly curate your experience (the block system is wack and you can't stop someone from teleporting to your server once you became friends) so it feels overwhelming, especially with people that get clingy that may range from young children that don't mean to be like that (which I can tolerate) to folks that talked to you once, so now you're their therapist/partner... And I find it also affects closer bonds too ? There's this general unease around enforcing boundaries, I have to reassure new friends that they can tell me they're busy or can't hang out for any other reason, since I sometimes teleport to them just out of curiosity to see what they're doing.
It's just my two cents of course, but I think that there should be proper ways to enforce boundaries before players are pushed to talk to eachother if you want a majority of them to happily do so.

Ukrainian sea drones are becoming faster, more accurate, and more powerful. With a range of over 1,000 km, they must keep commanders of Putin's Black Sea from getting much sleep.
Ukrainian naval drones Sea Baby have been modernized and can now carry almost a ton of explosives to hit a target over 1,000 kilometers away, Artem Dekhtiarenko, the spokesperson of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), said on April 14. "This means that the SBU can reach a target almost anywhere in the Black Sea," added Dekhtiarenko. In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on occupied Crimea, targeting Russian military assets in and around the Black Sea with domestically-produced sea drones and long-range missiles. Russia has illegally occupied the peninsula since 2014. As of early February 2024, 33% of the Russian Black Sea fleet's warships had been disabled by Ukraine, the Strategic Communications Center of Ukraine's Armed Forces recently reported. The SBU currently uses two types of sea drones — Sea Baby and Mamai, Dekhtiarenko said on national television.
"These are already new generations of drones, on the improvement of which the team of SBU specialists worked and continues to work together with other members of the Security and Defense Forces."
Ukraine continues to develop and upgrade its sea drone forces. When Russian missile launching vessels are forced to cower in distant ports, they are unable to launch attacks on Ukrainian maternity hospitals and schools.
Ukraine's ability to rule the waves of the Black Sea, despite having no real navy, is another example of its determination to fight off Russian invaders.
The only way to end the war is to make Ukraine safe from Russian aggression. Putin is already in violation of several treaties and other international agreements regarding Ukrainian sovereignty. Only a fool or MAGA supporter (basically the same thing) would expect Putin to respect any new agreement. Appeasement of Hitler did not stop World War II – it accelerated it.
If you're in the US, look up your member of the House of Representatives and demand that Russophile Speaker "MAGA Mike" Johnson quit blocking US aid to Ukraine which has already passed the Senate. And I'm talking to you – not the neighbor with the broken porch light.
Find Your Representative
If you have a MAGA zombie as a Representative, ask: Why do you hate freedom?

The Netherlands will provide water pump installations, life jackets, and rescue boats to Ukraine.
*edit: They posted a new version of this tweet. The National Rescue fleet is sending the boats, not the KNRM, they will provide lifejackets and waders.
