For MerMay I wanted to give some representation to our oft forgotten freshwater mermaids. This Northern Pike mermaid lives in Lake Superior, and is accompanied by a Rusty Crayfish, a Freshwater Sunfish, and an Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly. She is wearing a flannel bikini top due to the cold temperatures of Lake Superior and the local Midwest cultural influences on the Lake Superior mermaids.
Lake Superior contains 10% of the world's fresh water, and is the largest freshwater lake in the world, so large it is actually a freshwater inland sea. If we're going to find a freshwater mermaid, it would be in Lake Superior!

ah. if a pet lobster turns blue after a molt, it's generally because of a lack of carotenoids in the diet, which keeps it a nice rusty-orange-brown hue. they normally get it from plankton
doesnt mean he's unhealthy! just a lack of a specific pigment nutrient. it happens with crayfish a lot in the pet industry, funnily enough. but lobsters and even some crabs can have that happen too
With a normal lobster or crayfish, yes, that is the case. But Banana Bread started off as a yellow lobster, which means he already lacked pigment due to a genetic mutation. So he never would’ve been the standard reddish-brown of most lobsters. It’s definitely possible that he turned blue as a result of diet/being in captivity, as he was wild-caught and has been living in an aquarium for around six months now, but he was still yellow in the wild, so he definitely doesn’t produce pigment normally anyway.
(Also he’s not a pet, he lives at the aquarium where I work in the summers. The aquarium has seawater lines connected directly to the ocean, so I suspect he gets at least a little bit of plankton in his diet.)

Late evening/night hiking!
Been well enough to go back to the canyons for hiking and have been having a field day. There are toads everywhere and better not be skittish at night. All the rustling sounds are either toads, rats, rabbits or gophers. Lots of activity
Now! The milipedes were super exciting to us because the ones I saw growing up were only an inch at best. The onesat the canyon range from 3½-4 inches, and yes, I adore milipedes and used to have 5 of them as pets. 2 Texan (6 inches rusty color) and 3 Malaysian (12 inches black color).
The crayfish were also another pleasant surprise. Another hiker clued us to their existence, and after a bit of searching, we found some.
The ant like insect is what we call a "potato bug". They are pretty large and you can't help but see them.
With all the wildlife photos I never actually touch them. Especially with frogs or toads. They are sensitive and are best left alone. I use a Canon Powershot for long distance photography while I use my phone for closer shots.

"Rusty Crayfish" sounds like a character from The Andy Griffith Show, but it's actually an invasive crustacean Maine biologists are hoping to keep from infiltrating more of the state's waterways. Sounds like a good ol' fashioned seafood boil is in order.
The ground beneath Naples, Italy has been awfully rumbly recently.
Tireless human rights activist Kyrie Irving has been named as Chief Creative Officer for ANTA, a Chinese sneaker company accused of relying on the slave labor of imprisoned Uighur Muslims.
Be careful if you're using Ozempic, Wegovy, etc. for weight-loss purposes.
Listen, the rumored beef between Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa had NOTHING to do with the kidney. You got that?
Commenter Scripty sent in this tale of a landlord getting owned by a tenant who refuses to leave or pay rent.
Finally, LMAO.

Beyond the glimmer of her glintstone missiles, Izar could see Cotesia going for the crayfish’s underbelly in a move that was both quick and bold—vanishing from view as she dove under the creature. Izar, in turn, kept firing until she felt her focus ebb away, her veins scorching with pain when she still tried to will her magic into another burst of glintstone. To no avail, of course. With a frustrated sigh, she hastily fumbled for her flask with one hand, her fingers shaking. A routine movement, performed countless times on her travels, but this time it felt too slow. Ensha was still held by the crayfish’s pincer, gone limp under its furious stabbing. But just when Izar had managed to pluck the flask from her belt, the crayfish simply dropped Ensha. Water splashed when Cotesia rolled out from under it, and then the creature collapsed, still twitching for a moment, but… not for long. The giant body went still in the muddy water. A heartbeat of silence. Izar gasped for breath and darted to Ensha’s side. For a moment, she wasn’t sure he was conscious, but then he moved, albeit weakly, trying to sit up. Rusty as his armor was, it had protected him well enough, although he was clearly hurt. When Izar reached him, he brought up one hand to signal he was alright—a gesture that didn’t exactly look convincing. ‟You do realize that I was out of its reach?” she muttered as she grabbed his arm gently to help him up. Ensha swayed a little as he got back on his feet, his signing choppy yet a little defiant. No, you weren’t. She sighed and kept supporting him while she reached for her crimson flask and thrust it into his hand, then glanced over to Cotesia who had just driven one of her blades into the dead crayfish’s head. There was both precision and a certain routine to that movement. Izar cleared her throat. ‟That was an impressive display. Thank you. This might have gone differently if not for your blades.” She meant it; she was far from sure her magic alone would have been enough to take down the crayfish—not in time, probably. With a tilt of her head, Izar added: ‟Are you alright?” Even though Cotesia apparently wasn’t injured, it just seemed the right thing to ask.
Cotesia made note of the skeleton man’s willingness—Ensha, she’d have to remember that, if he lived—to jump straight into harm’s way. She questioned something of the effectivity, seeing as it only landed him perilously in danger not but moments later, but hearing the consternation in Izar’s voice made it at least clear that such selflessness was appreciated by someone. Cotesia thought it was moreso needlessly high-risk, but no matter...
The crayfish reared with its prey in claw. Cotesia was intimately familiar with being violently stabbed by such a giant creature, having her ribs pulverized despite the defense her armor had provided at the time. The barrage of glinstone magics fired at the creature made it a somewhat risky prospect, possibly getting shot in the back by magic, but Cotesia saw an opening—as the crayfish reared, its more vulnerable, underbelly was exposed. As it turned its focus towards Izar, she set herself to action. Throwing herself across the ground, rolling to be underneath the creature and the hail of magic, she dropped one blade to two hand the other, forcing it between the plates and sprawling legs all the way up to the hilt with a grunt of effort.
Having realized it had a more pressing matter to deal with as a poisoned sword lodged into its torso, the crayfish dropped Ensha unceremoniously. Cotesia had but a bare breath to grab her second blade and roll away again, scrambling back somewhat ungraciously as the crayfish made a last minute effort at flattening her.
But between magic and poison and the cuts across its body, there was no more fight left in the beast. It tried again for a weak swipe but inevitably fell dead.
Cotesia heaved a sigh, wiped some of the mud off her face. This came to the part where she was supposed to pretend like she was worried, something she struggled most with, especially as the excitement of battle wore off and she was left again with a sort of blank expression. At least she could make sure the crayfish was well and proper dead, by finding the seam of its armored head and slipping her blade through to its brain...

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Chemical cues are an important part of communication for many animals, but the rusty crayfish takes it in an unusual direction. When individuals encounter each other, they use odors from urine to determine how to react. The stronger the cue, the less aggressive they are during the ensuing fight. A victorious male will also recognize the urine of a previously defeated opponent and will display dominance before attacking.

a smirk. "well, i was having the time of my life." and it wasn't too far from the truth. the image of naomi's chest had helped him along just fine. so much for them only being a handful. he was quite the handful himself. he leaned against the leather of the front bench, one arm extended and steadying the wheel, the other slack at his side for the other to touch. the curled mop, a tangled nest of reds and browns, was something west neglected more than he should. once it had been crayfish red—now the shade was more of a rusty amber, shot through with the overgrown roots he hadn't yet bleached. "sure you can. you can go pick some wild ass color that i'll be stuck with for the rest of the trip. slime green, canary yellow..." the pulled strand coiled back against his ear. "by the time we get to the beach, i doubt we'll have much left to hide anyway. you do whatever you want to do," a comfortable silence filled the truck. only the slow buzz of the radio and tiny pebbles pelting the window could be heard beneath the quiet. and, within the hour, they found what they were looking for. it was a small joint, a huge dinosaur out the front welcoming weary travellers. west's eyes rolled, and yet he still twisted the wheel towards the parking lot. he really needed to practice his parking—it was as though he didn't even attempt to stay within the lines. "looks good enough to me. they'll for sure do eggs and bacon. you let me know when you're all done and then follow my lead, alright?" he wasn't a seasoned criminal—west had never robbed a bank, nor had he taken a life, but skipping cheques was quite his forte. his keys were tugged from the truck, a lapis blue that had been scraped and scuffed, before sauntering towards the entrance, a good few steps of naomi. they were seated in a booth, and his head of messy curls glanced over one shoulder then the next. it was empty enough. they shouldn't have any problems. he opened the tacky laminated menu, chewing on the side of his thumb as he read through the options. "a coffee..." he pondered, "and the grits. waffles. aw, and they got biscuits." why not order one of everything, if they weren't paying? the menu was slapped shut, and west leaned over the table to take a look at naomi's. "you figured out what you're getting yet?"
Tumblr media
"i wasn't timing you. i just wanted to make sure that you were okay. we are out in the middle of no where. dont' want to be caught with your pants down when the person who owns this land shows up." she told him. "we are in this together, we gotta have each others backs." she told him her fingers still twirling circles on his arm before she moved it to touch his matted curls. he had washed them in the creek but they had dried so messy. "next time we are somewhere that you can get your hands on some dye you should let me take a crack at it." she softly pulled one of his curls and let it go to watch it bounce back. his hair was soft and all she could imagine doing in that moment was running her fingers through them. her attention was drawn back to him when he had agreed they could go to the ocean.
"really?" the excitement in her voice grew and she clapped like a child for a moment. "yay." she cheered. "this is going to be so much fun. if you insist that i stay covered on the beach by the ocean then i suggest you help me steal something that i can cover myself with." she laughed softly. "because im not going swimming in the ocean in this thing." her nails pulled at the cotton material of the shirt gently. "i say we just keep down this road for a while." she didnt know the first thing about maps but she guessed she had no choice but to learn it. "i am sure within the hour or so we will find some little dinner that isn't really busy or populated." she suggested. "i have been dying for some eggs and bacon since i woke up."

I think Banana Bread is a rusty crayfish! I remembered hearing about these a while back. They're native to the northern Ohio River basin, but have become invasive in other parts of the United States and Canada.

Every River Ran Dry
Here’s a little teaser of the next fic I’m tinkering with! It’s just a little snacky break, something to let me unwind and get my thoughts in order.
This fic is a pseudo-sequel to my river-headcanon thing The Words Flow Like A River.
I’ll post the full thing soonish!
Joe Hills stood on the pebble beach, the great oaks towering all around him. In the distance, he could hear the rumble of a city, distant noises and distant sounds clattering and chattering across the streets humanity had made.
He carefully kicked at the pebbles, watching in vacant horror as a rounded stone flew up and bounced across the empty river bottom before him. Here and there, drying puddles sat tucked behind rocks and boulders, and all around him, as he watched, the great trees that shaded her banks began to wither and die.
Joe stepped out, walking into the riverbed, leaving footprints in the mud. Fish died, gasping for breath, as crows picked at the carrion all around him. Muddy old tires, lost bits of fishing tackle. Rusty coins, beer bottles, small crayfish dying on the rocks. The flies descended to pick at the carcasses, swarms of them descending on everything no longer protected by the crashing waves and the cool, cool water.
It was empty.
“The Cumberland has run dry.” Joe whispered, feeling the horror of those words in the depths of his soul.
And then he woke up.
