Im actually gonna cry of laughter.
Okay so Jaune says to Ruby this: Oh let’s not forget the REASON we’re in the Ever After in the first place is because of YOUR plan that didn’t work!
So he’s accusing Ruby of their being stuck in the Ever After because HER plan didn’t work, right. HER plan.
So I went back to Volume 8 and I rewatched the part where the plan to use the Staff was made, in V8 episode 12. Because using the staff is specifically why they’re in the Ever After. And... well:
~~~
Nora: Guys, she has to go to the Vault.
Ruby: That’s actually a risk we haven’t considered.
Jaune: We've been so worried about keeping the Vault closed that we never considered using what's inside.
Oscar: The Staff of Creation.
Ruby: Maybe we could use it to save Penny and get everyone in Atlas and Mantle back to safety.
....
Okay, so Ruby, Oscar, AND Jaune are ALL framed as together coming to the revelation that they can use the Staff here. They’re essentially all talking about the same thing to build to Oscar spelling it out explicitly, and then Ruby just elaborates by saying “Hey! Maybe we can use it to solve both of our problems!”
Point being, they all have equal say and are all framed as coming to this conclusion. Keep that in mind.
....
Weiss: So we've got people trapped in Atlas and Mantle that we can't evacuate unless we use the Staff which is located inside the Vault. If we open the Vault, Penny terminates. If Ironwood gets wind of any of this, he blows up Mantle.
Oscar: There's something else to consider. Once the Staff creates anything else, the city drops. Atlas has enough natural Gravity Dust to keep it from plummeting immediately, but, well, nobody's going to want to be around when it touches down.
Jaune stops using his Semblance.
Jaune: Okay, then let's use the Staff to teleport everyone to safety. Maybe even to another Kingdom.
~~~
So, this is in the mansion, when they’re hashing out how to use the Staff. We’ve shifted from Ruby, Oscar, and Jaune being the most proactive with planning to Weiss/Whitley, Oscar, Jaune, and Ruby.
Oscar is mainly relaying info about the Staff so they can account for it, and Weiss is just revising their current situation. Neither are doing much actual problem-solving aside from Weiss’s vague suggestion at the end of the scene that she has a way to deal with Ironwood and his bomb.
Ruby has lines about planning not in this specific scene, but as a voiceover about them entering the vault to get the staff to stop Penny’s termination. In the actual vault, she’s the one who spearheads appealing to Ambrosius to help Penny. She’s constantly associated with the half of the plan involving Penny, as in, she doesn’t even have lines pertaining to the evacuation aside from her initial suggestion.
Now, JAUNE is the one who is elaborating on using the staff to take care of the civilians, specifically saying they should use it to move them to another kingdom, and WEISS/WHITLEY are the ones who supply the schematics for the paths and spearhead asking Ambrosius about this part of the plan. Furthermore, JNR are the ones associated with and taking care of the evacuation, with Jaune spearheading it. The evacuation portion of the plan is specifically what landed them in the Ever After, especially considering the Staff has a significant degree of flexibility in how it can be used despite the limitations.
All this to say that this was not Ruby’s plan alone. She doesn’t even get lines about it aside from her initial vague idea to use the staff to solve both their problems. This plan is also Jaune’s. It’s also technically Weiss’s. They are the ones that contributed the most to putting that part of the plan together, specifying how exactly they’re going to use the Staff for the evacuation, and leading it. They are all framed as equal contributors to the plan.
So where the FUCK does Jaune get off only blaming Ruby for this? Like he’s some subordinate just following Ruby’s plan when he’s not only a team leader himself, but he ALSO was shown to have equal say and even a majority association with the part of the plan that landed them in the Ever After. Ruby certainly didn’t force him into it.
He can apparently (vaguely) angst over his responsibility in Penny’s death but as soon as he can slough off the blame he’s alllll for yelling at Ruby and ignoring his own part lmfao.

// I laugh a little bit at people seeing Tai/Summer as somehow less romantic since there was no goodbye kiss. But maybe I'm just biased because as a married woman, there are 100% times I would much rather bury my face in my husband's tits like Summer did instead, so that's no less spicy to me lmao. (There is also the thought that maybe she wanted to but felt too bad/unworthy at that moment.)

I think the only defense I could give for the latest episode is it was short, that explains the weird phasing in the episode.
From what I know according to one of crwby tweets, they didn’t have enough budget to make the episode longer, and they couldn’t change the writing either because that would waste a lot of time and money. That would sucks for the animation team too, if they have to redo the animation again. they could only squeeze in as much important parts as possible.
Then again I don’t know the details of what happened in the show during the development
Don’t get me wrong, this frustrating me too. I which they could focus more on Ruby, at least that wouldn’t make the episode not as bad.
At least the last episode is going to be the long one so I hope it would make up for the previous one

Okay, but I'm not the only one who thinks this whole Ascension thing is messed up, right?
Imagine living in Ever After. You have one thing you're supposed to do and one place you're supposed to stay in your whole life and if you deviate from that even slightly, the ground swallows you up , the Ever After "fixes" you and spits you out as a completely new person.
You have no memory of who you were before, what friendships you might or might not have made, not really. At most you retain ghosts of your former life, like not liking humans because one of them was basically responsible for your ascension.
The old you is dead, plain and simple.
And sometimes it doesn't even have to be your fault. Like, Alyx cheated when she played against the Red King. The Herbalist was genuinely trying to help, but Team RWBY were being obtuse, impatient dickheads who only gave him the vaguest of answers, literally how was he supposed to know what they needed??
The Cat makes it seem like Ascension is preferable to dying, but it's really not???
This is Ozpin-becoming-a-parasite-to-whoever-he-reincarnates-into levels of fucked up!
And from how the show frames being eaten and dying for real by the Jabberwalker as being a bad thing compared to Ascension, the narrative obviously wants us to think Ascension is good, too??

As a Neo fan, it feels really… weird how the latest episode treated her.
It’s nice to see Roman and Neo working “together” again, but it’s facilitated by a semblance upgrade that doesn’t really match the version of Neo from before.
It’s nice to see Neo actually confronting Ruby, but it’s handled in such a baffling way that just exists as torture porn for a teenage girl. Instead of Neo acting like Neo, she’s acting like an entirely seperate character to shove Ruby’s nose into her trauma face first when… Neo only cared about her being dead before?
Speaking of being basically a seperate character, why are Neo’s clones able to talk? It feels like CRWBY realized it’s hard to have a mute person monologue at Ruby so they just… made her clones talk for her. It led to nice banter from Torchwick, but at the cost of just painting over Neo’s disability.
And then there’s the fucking cat taking Neo over. We could have had some character introspection on what a person who has focused their life into one goal does when they succeed… but the cat takes over and forces Neo out of the narrative, and will likely end up killing her for good. Just… what a waste.

What if Ruby finally embracing who she is is what gets Weiss to finally fall?! What if the reason she hasn’t seen Ruby like that after all this time is because Ruby was trying to be like someone else?!
Please tell me I’m cooking and that WhiteRose will start brewing.

I know it’s just the tiniest of a crumb, but silent knight shippers gotta be eating up the fact that Jaune was running to save Neo from the cat, right?

NGL I’m salty that NOW Jaune has the Writer’s Exclusive Permission to Criticize Ruby when last volume Ren did the same thing (with way stronger arguments) but he got looked at like he was just being unreasonable lol.
Like Jaune you’re a leader too and you didn’t say shit in objection to Ruby’s plans either, that was REN.

//
This is all absolutely a timely part of their arcs and at the same time,
Ruby is lost and angry and unburdening herself instead of the selfless hero.
Weiss is the comic relief instead of the snob.
Blake is the optimistic one moving forward instead of the emo one who runs.
Yang is logical and perceptive instead of the rash jokester.
Jaune has no people to support.
They're definitely mirrored versions of their past selves.
