Worth It
Summary:
Poe would never, ever forget how his mom had squeezed him ever so slightly tighter, dropped a kiss to his messy curls, and sighed, almost to herself, “This is what makes it all worth it.”
Now, on the other side of his own war, his own child snuggled securely on his lap, Poe gets it.
Word Count: 1226
Tags/Warnings: Dad!Poe; Poe Dameron/Fem Reader; pregnancy; Family Dameron adorableness out the wazoo; sooooo much fluff.
Author’s Note: So this happened because my 3-year-old son’s favorite thing to do is ‘play’ Minecraft with his dad. He will snuggle with my husband, both of them staring at that stupid computer for hours, and my husband loves it just as much as our son. Today was no exception. They got ‘creepered’ and I’m telling you, there is nothing like the sound of a toddler belly laughing to make your day better. Of course, because #me, I couldn’t stop thinking about Poe sharing his favorite hobby with his own kid. So here you go. I apologize for the typos because I wrote this in about thirty minutes, but I make no apologies for the cavities that may or may not result from consuming this fluff.
*I know there’s something about Poe’s earliest memory of flying with Shara in the Flight Log, but my copy isn’t getting here until Sunday and I was too impatient to get this done to wait for the details, so any discrepancies with canon are my fault and tbh IDGAF.
Tumblr media
Poe’s not entirely certain what his earliest memory of his mom is; he’s pretty sure it was the first time Shara took him past atmo into space, but it’s hard to trust a toddler’s memory. Regardless, he knows his favorite.
He was four, and Shara had taken him up in her beloved RZ-1 A-wing interceptor. It wasn’t anywhere near the first time he’d flown with her, perched on her lap, her helmet completely swallowing his head but loving every second of ‘piloting’ the fighter. They flew together most days. Just keeping an eye on the neighborhood, Shara would say, with a wink for her son and a laugh as she pressed a kiss to Kes’ cheek as they clomped back into the house, breathless and euphoric from being airborne.
But that time was special. That time, Shara had woken him up before the dawn and bundled him in her worn green flight jacket, whispering that she had a surprise for him. He remembers waving to his dad, silhouetted by the porch light as the A-wing took flight, rising into the pre-dawn sky.
That was the first morning Poe had ever watched the sun rise from the air. He remembers every detail; from the condensation on the canopy of the ship, to the way the sunlight had slowly filtered over the mountains surrounding the Dameron homestead. It was breathtaking. To a four-year-old, it was life altering. And Poe would never, ever forget how his mom had squeezed him ever so slightly tighter, dropped a kiss to his messy curls, and sighed, almost to herself, “This is what makes it all worth it.”
Now, on the other side of his own war, his own child snuggled securely on his lap, Poe gets it.
Beka Dameron squeals with delight as the X-Wing bursts through the cloud cover, those same mountains still steadfast guardians around her grandfather’s ranch. Poe can’t help his grin. His daughter’s glee is infectious.
“What do you think, babygirl?” he asks the two-year-old, leaning forward and blowing a raspberry on her cheek. She giggles and he beams. “Should we chase the sunrise and bring it home to Mama?”
“Woop, Daddy!” Beka smacks the flight stick with a chubby fist. “Go woop-woop!”
“Alright, princess, one loop-loop comin’ right up.” Poe flicks a switch and drops a kiss on Beka’s curly mop. “Beebee, you heard the lady!”
From the astromech socket, BB-8 chirps their approval of this plan. Granted, there’s very little the droid wouldn’t do for any of the Damerons, but Beka’s wishes are BB’s commands.
It’s a split second, as his daughter laughs and the sunrise hits the mountain ridge just right, in the stillness before he spins the fighter into motion, that Poe is struck by the strongest sense of deja vu. His throat is suddenly tight and he has to blink rapidly because his eyes are abruptly watery.
This is what makes it all worth it.
Yeah, he definitely gets it.
Tightening his arm around his daughter, Poe whoops. Beka echoes his joyful cry, and the fighter leaps towards the dawn.
__
On the ground, you watch the X-wing formerly known as Black One as it dips in and out of view through the clouds. You’re positive you can hear your daughter’s giggles from where you stand, as well as her father’s throaty laugh.
Behind you, the kitchen door opens.
“How long have they been up there?” Kes asks, joining you on the porch.
“Not long.” You smile at your father-in-law. “Poe wanted to see the sunrise.”
“He’s his mother’s son, that’s for sure,” he says with an affectionate chuckle, handing you a steaming cup of nysillim tea. “Always in a better mood after starting the day in the air.”
You accept the mug with murmured thanks, both of you watching contentedly as the fighter appears once more below the morning haze.
It’s barely a moment before Poe is expertly landing the fighter in the clearing behind the house. Kes takes your mug before he helps you off the porch, and you both stroll to the makeshift flight pad. The first streams of morning light start to break through the clouds as the ship powers down.
“Mama!” Beka hollers the second the canopy lifts. “Mama, Bee bwaught you sunshine!”
“Yeah, Mama,” Poe echos, carefully tossing the toddler down into Kes’ waiting arms. Beka’s joyful shriek makes everyone smile even bigger. “Had to chase some of those clouds off.”
You laugh as Beka flops backwards in Kes’ arms, her curls dangling as she hangs upside down. You bend to kiss her forehead. “You did great, honey. Did you fly Daddy’s ship for him?”
“Yeah!” Beka giggles. “We did woop-woops!”
You turn to your husband as he scrambles down the flight ladder. “Is that so?”
“Princess, we talked about this.” Poe tickles Beka with one hand, wrapping his other arm around your shoulders. “What happens in the cockpit stays in the cockpit.”
“Oh really?” you murmur quietly.
Poe winks at you. “All woop-woops were conducted under the strictest of safety procedures, Lieutenant. General’s honor.”
BB-8, now freed from the fighter, whistles knowingly.
You raise an eyebrow.
Poe glares at the droid. “Traitor.”
“How about some Iktotch toast for breakfast?” Kes asks Beka, smoothly changing the topic before you and Poe can get going. “Pop’s got zoochberry syrup!”
Beka nearly leaps out of her grandfather’s arms. “ZOOBURYS.”
Laughing, Kes leads the way back to the farmhouse, BB-8 trailing the pair of them like a puppy. As you go to follow, Poe tugs gently on your hand, holding you back.
“You know I’d never put her in danger, right?” he asks quietly.
“Oh, Poe.” You bring a hand up to card your fingers through his hair, and he leans into your palm with a contented sigh. “Of course I know that.”
“Just making sure.” He smiles, that half smirk that is your absolute favorite. “How are you feeling?”
You take his hand and position it carefully on the swollen rise of your belly. “She’s been dancing this morning.”
“Yeah?” It only takes a moment before his eyes widen and he lets out a bark of laughter as a foot connects soundly with his palm. “She’s so strong!”
“I’m aware,” you intone wryly. “This one’s got your sass already.”
He laughs again, wisely not arguing (because it’s not like you’re wrong), instead pulling you into his arms and kissing you soundly. You stand as the sky glows from pink to blue, wrapped in each other in the early morning air, until something small hits your legs.
“DADDY. MAMA.” Beka makes the universal toddler sign for ‘up’. “Eye-tot toast! Papa says now!”
“Okay, okay, princess!” Releasing you with one last kiss to your temple, Poe scoops up your daughter, tossing her into the air before settling her on his shoulders. Grinning at you, he wraps his arm back around your shoulders, tugging you securely into his side. “Team Dameron is on the move.”
Beka’s giggles echo through the clearing as you make your way up the gentle rise towards the house. And with his wife and his daughter in his arms, and another kid on the way, Poe can’t help that tightness in his throat again. He’s not even aware of the smile on his face.
This is what makes it all worth it.
Boy, if that’s not the truth.

Wookiepedia on Wood that could be used for Lightsaberhilts
Original Text can be read Here, Here, Here and Here!
After the descriptions it is only mentioned that Greel-Wood and Brylark Tree are used for Lightsaber Hilts, but when it comes to the hardness of the wood Metalwood is just as hard as Brylark. So Metalwood might could be used in Lightsaberhilts as well. Greel Wood might only be used as adornment on the Lightsaber Hilts due to its scarlet colour.
Brylark Tree The Brylark tree was a type of tree. During the Clone Wars, Jedi Initiate Gungi was asked by Professor Huyang what he envisioned his future lightsaber to be made. The Wookiee explained to the Architect droid he felt it through the Force as wood. Huyang responded that the only wood sturdy enough to make a saber would be from a Brylark tree. Huyang had a pre-carved Brylark wood casing in his collection of lightsaber parts, which Gungi used for his lightsaber hilt. Huyang said that it was a very rare choice among hilts, just like Wookiees like Gungi are rare among Jedi. Greel Tree A greel tree was a type of tree native to Pii III and Pii IV, the only planets with the proper ecosystem to support the fastidious trees. The Greel Wood Logging Corporation, based in the Pii system, maintained a monopoly on harvesting them. The crimson timber—greel wood—was in great demand as a luxury item. Industrial Automaton designed a logging droid to specifications for the Greel Wood Logging Corporation, which used them on the rolling hillsides of Pii III. They were apparently very expensive. History: During the final decades of the Galactic Republic, entrepreneur Meysen Kayson bought the rights to develop Pii III and Pii IV as a bi-planetary nature reserve. While clearing space for the first buildings, a species of greel tree was discovered. Although the bark was rough and of no use, the wood below was found to be smooth and a deep scarlet-violet in color. After consultation with xenobiologists and xenoarborists, Kayson found that the specific species had an amazing fast growth rate; if the stump was left intact, it would grow back to its original height within five years. Kayson abandoned his plans for the nature reserve and established the Greel Wood Logging Corporation. By instituting a careful program of logging and allowing harvested trees time to regenerate, Kayson laid the foundation for a successful company. The Greel Wood Logging Corporation was responsible for harvesting greel wood from the worlds of Pii III and Pii IV in the Arkanis sector. Greel trees were harvested on both Pii III and Pii IV, and the differences in the planetary weather conditions led to planet produce a different variety of greel wood. Pii III's greel wood was known as the "grassland scarlet greel wood." The greel wood from Pii IV was known as the "band crimson greel wood." The bushland scarlet was bushier, denser, and lighter in color. The band crimson was lighter, but darker in color. It commanded a higher price due to the elaborate and ornate spirals, waves and bands in the near-black flaws. With Industrial Automaton, the Greel Wood Logging Corporation developed the FLR "Lumberdroid" for its tree-felling operations. As a teenager, Tirs Maladane spent a summer on Pii III working in the greel wood industry to earn some money. Uses: Some models of groundcoach including the Ubrikkian Transports LuxurPort Zisparanza, utilized greel wood in both interior and exterior paneling. Greel wood was also used in the construction of furniture, high-end jewelry, and ornamental products.  The walls of the Aspre Plunge casino were paneled in highly polished greel wood,as were the luxurious gambling rooms of the undersea passenger liner Coral Vanda. During the Battle of Endor, Tycho Celchu flew an RZ-1 A-wing interceptor that featured greel wood paneling in its cockpit.Greel wood was used in furniture and in some lightsaber hilts. Darth Vader's Palace contained spartan chairs and tables made from greel wood. Platt Okeefe had a greel wood wardrobe onboard her ship, the Last Chance. The Bothan crime lord Akris Ur'etu had a desk made from Greel wood inside one of his Skar'kla Consortium bases. Pok Nar-Ten of the Klatooinian Trade Guild had furniture made of Greel wood.
Metalwood Metalwoods were huge trees native to the planet Kuras III that grew to a height of thirty to forty meters. The trunk was smooth and dark gray, with metallic gray leaves. They grew where ore deposits were found. The tree's roots sunk into the planet's crust, tapping the ore for sustenance. The energy from the Kuras system's white dwarf star allowed the tree to refine the ore and convert it into layers of bark.

F L Y I N G. There was nothing quite like it in existence --
Tumblr media
when Poe flew, he felt alive —
with the pulse of the engine rumbling beneath his fingertips, the nimble touch of the controls and the tug that propelled him at the merest thought. In those split seconds, he seemed to have divined a certain type of magic; a touch of fierce belief; the sweetness of freedom. The very instance when man and machine became irrevocably entwined; where action superseded thought, where he was no longer rational, but being. It fueled every sharp manoeuvre and every steep dive; fleeting seconds that reaffirmed his belief in the Force, the cause, if not the whole damn universe.
And there were, too, moments of peace, silences amidst the chaos when he was not set on a mission or toggling one switch or another. In these interludes, his parents invariably wandered to mind – eternal echoes of their light, strength and devotion – a touch of comfort when all was still. Each of these moments suffused his being, ensuring that Poe never felt alone, not even in the darkest reaches of space.
Even from the days in that little RZ-1 A-wing interceptor, he has been chasing for the combination of thrill and serenity in the same space, and until he grasps it –
Poe Dameron will never stop flying.

The RZ-1 A-wing interceptor, also known as the RZ-1 A-wing starfighter, was a wedge-shaped starfighter manufactured by Kuat Systems Engineering, which took design inspiration from the Republic starfighters of the Clone Wars. Based on the original R-22 prototype, the early rebel movement adopted the fighter against the Galactic Empire, letting these so-called RZ-1s see action during the Age of the Empire and the Galactic Civil War. The updated RZ-2 variant would replace the RZ-1 after the Battle of Endor, and would see use thirty years later during the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.
X-wing starfighters were a type of starfighter marked by their distinctive S-foils that resembled the High Galactic script's character "X" in attack formation. They were heavily armed with four laser cannons on the S-foils and proton torpedo launchers in the fuselage. X-wings were designed for dogfighting and long missions. During the Galactic Civil War, the Rebel Alliance used X-wing models like the T-65B X-wing starfighter and T-65C-A2 X-wing in many battles, deploying X-wings in engagements such as the Attack on Lothal, the Battle of Yavin, the Battle of Endor, and the Battle of Jakku.Approximately thirty years later, a different and upgraded variation of X-wing, the T-70, was used by the Resistance, whereas a more advanced model, the T-85, was used by the New Republic Defense Fleet.
The Y-wing bomber, or more simply the BLT-series, Y-wing fighter, or Y-wing and nicknamed after the wallowing pigs, was a series of multi role starfighter-bomber ships manufactured by "Koensayr manufacturing". The starfighter was commissioned by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars, and would later become a standard fighter for the rebellion during the Galactic Civil War. Notable models include the original 2-seated BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bomber; it's successor, the BTL-S3 Y-wing starfighter, and the single-seated BLT-A4 Y-wing assault fighter.
The A/SF-01 B-wing starfighter, manufactured by Slayn & Korpil, was a relatively poor dogfighter, but it was primarily designed as a "blockade buster" to attack and destroy large capital ships. As such, it was equipped with weaponry and systems normally reserved for much larger craft. Indeed, the B-wing boasted more firepower than most patrol ships and corvettes. At the same time, it was slower and less maneuverable than a Y-wing, gave off a significant infrared signature, and required more maintenance than any other Rebel starfighter. The primary airfoil took up the length of the hull, with the cylindrical command pod at one end and a weapons pod at the other, and an engine cluster in between. Two S-foils just below the engine on either side of the main airfoil provided similar functionality to those on the X-wing starfighter but featured more advanced actuator technology and locking mechanisms. Anti-gravity generators and repulsorlift projectors were mounted in the S-foils.

Shara Bey was a human female pilot in the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. Lieutenant Bey and her husband, Sergeant Kes Dameron, had a son, Poe, whom they rarely saw during the war—a war they joined because they believed the galaxy was suffering under the rule of the Galactic Empire. Bey, a highly decorated RZ-1 A-wing interceptor pilot and a veteran of numerous battles, flew with Green Squadron in the assault against the second Death Star during the Battle of Endor. Bey, who taught her young son how to fly, died six years after the Battle of Endor.

December 3, 2019. The road to Rise of Skywalker continues with Tallissan Lintra, nicknamed "Tallie", was a human female pilot who served as a lieutenant and squadron commander in the Resistance's naval branch during the New Republic Era. Before joining the Resistance, Lintra lived on a farm with her parents on Pippip 3 where she learned how to fly using her father's old RZ-1 A-wing interceptor. Some time after joining the Resistance, Lintra participated in a series of missions against a group of pirates in the Cassander sector. By the time of the war against the First Order, Lintra was known as one of the Resistance's most capable pilots. She piloted a RZ-2 A-wing interceptor and served as Blue Leader during the evacuation of D'Qar until her demise aboard the Raddus at the hands of a pair of missiles fired by Kylo Ren's TIE Silencer. #art #artwork #artist #artistofinstagram #artistforhire #concept #custom #draw #drawing #drawingaday #Disney #DrawEveryday #design #illustration #pencil #sketch #ComicBook #LastJedi #MarvelComics #starwars #Lucasfilm #Tallie #Resistance https://www.instagram.com/p/B5oj8zIBdyM/?igshid=1i3cm6abicf11

The Rz-1 A-Wing Interceptor gained most of its fame, somewhat grimly, by crashing - the hull of Green Leader Arvel Crynyd’s ship tearing through the bridge of the Executor and leading to that ship’s destruction during the Battle of Endor. The kinds of A-Wings that gained this fame, the modified Rebel Alliance variants, have become famous for their borderline irresponsible straight-line speed, extremely limited pilot protection, and suicidally daring pilots.
It’s hard for those that don’t know the history of the craft to picture, then, previous models of the ship as responsible, protective, and well rounded dogfighting craft, but the ships that rolled off the lines of Kuat Systems Engineering were exactly that. Inspired by the shape of the Delta-7 Aethersprite used by Jedi pilots years before, the Rz-1 was a competent, capable craft easily the match of Incom/Subpro’s Z-95 headhunter, while also being faster than previous generation ships. It was only after Rebel Alliance technicians would strip down the craft’s armor, lighten its weapons, and thin its shields that the A-Wing would gain its reputation as a lightning-fast death trap.
Our view on the ships is colored by time. With the most fame coming to the modified variant of the craft used in the Battle of Endor, it’s easy to overlook the role the Rz-1 played in history, primarily as the starfighter of choice for Jun Sato’s resistance. While casualties for pilots there were high, that can be attributed to a lack of properly trained pilots. Whereas today we tend to think of the A-Wing as the lighter, faster counterpart to the ‘standard’ T-65 X-Wing, due to its deployment as such at Endor, the fact is that many Rebel cells did not have access to Incom’s ships, and the A-Wing served with distinction for many groups as their primary, well-rounded starfighter.
