How to Get Your Friends into Doctor Who (2005) - A Guide
Tumblr media
Ok I really like Doctor Who, and of course I like introducing people to it, but oh my god do you forget how randomly terrible and/or cringy and/or uncomfortably Moffat-esque some of the episodes are, *especially* when you're watching it with someone who has no idea what to expect.
SO I made a list of ten episodes that I think would be the best loose sequence of episodes for a causal introduction to the show...
But first, some requirements:
It has to be a one-off (NO TWO-PARTERS), low commitment, etc
It can't require watching previous OR following episodes to be enjoyable
It needs to actually be good
It needs to represent Doctor Who well
In a social setting where you're showing a group of people an episode, most of these would be fine. Watching consistently with one person however, loosely follow this order, and if your person decides at any point that they want to commit to actually watching the show, skip straight back to The End of The World and watch Series 1. Ok list time...
1. Rose (S1, E01)
Tumblr media
I think Rose is the perfect episode of Doctor Who to start on. It's campy, it's fun and weird and it sets up almost everything you need to know for the Revival Era. You get the companion, the Doctor, regular Doctor Who tropes and themes, etc. Plus, if they can't get past the Mickey bin scene, this show probably isn't for them anyway.
2. Dalek (S1, E06)
Tumblr media
Skipping a few episodes into Series 1, Dalek is a great way to get a feel for the format of the show, and also a great and intentional introduction to the Daleks. The Doctor and the companion turn up in a mysterious place and have to battle an alien force and really unlikeable one-off side characters, the works basically. It's a fun monster-movie of an episode.
3. Vincent and The Doctor (S5,E10)
Tumblr media
Jumping a whole five series forward, Vincent and The Doctor is a notoriously heart-wrenching historical that I think is a classic (if a little indulgent) example of Doctor-meets-famous-historical-figure. It's nice to jump to a different Doctor and a different era of the show, to get a feel for its' diversity. Although there's a few moments relevant to the greater series plot, it's contained, very pretty, very sweet, and easy to understand.
4. Midnight (S4, E10)
Tumblr media
Midnight just feels like an essential episode to be honest. A fantastic one-off sci-fi horror/thriller, with one of David Tennant's best performances, a great introduction to the 10th Doctor. It's a shame you don't get more Donna, but I think this one would be my go-to if someone asked for the best episode to watch stand-alone, just based on how genuinely great it is.
5. Heaven Sent (S9, E11)
Tumblr media
Jumping to Series 9 with another critically-acclaimed episode, but also one that I think is an amazing introduction to the 12th Doctor. Heaven Sent is a little unconventional, and I'm not 100% sure it should be here, but it does give Capaldi a whole episode to just act his ass off, and he completely delivers. It's artsy, mysterious and dramatic, very much the high concept sci-fi style of Moffat's later scripts, so I think an appropriate watch.
6. The Voyage of The Damned (2007 Special)
Tumblr media
If you're not in a festive mood, try The Lodger or Demons of the Punjab instead
The Christmas episodes are too iconic not to show, and as far as Christmassy vibes, celebrity cameos and whimsical concepts go, this one is a fun one. This is David Tennant in his prime, with Kylie Minogue, a massive budget and a romp of a script.
6. Blink (S3, E10)
Tumblr media
I mean, duh, but genuinely I think Blink is just *too good* not to include. A tense, creepy, tightly-written piece of horror TV with twists and turns and drama, it's considered the best episode of Doctor Who for a reason, and along with Midnight is an amazing stand-alone episode. It's not super conventional, but all the timey-wimey stuff is very Doctor Who.
6. The Mummy on The Orient Express (S8, E08)
Tumblr media
If you're a Tennant stan you could swap this out for The Planet of the Dead
This one is just a fun one really. The Mummy on The Orient Express is stylish and fun, with a cool concept and a little peek into a more complex Doctor-companion relationship. With a short explanation you can get the context pretty easily, and it's a good example of your typical episode anyway.
HOWEVER if you have time, there's a bunch of two-parters you should watch instead, like The Family of Blood, The Empty Child, Silence in the Library, even Extremis.
9. The Haunting of Villa Diodati (S12, E10)
Tumblr media
Finally some 13th Doctor rep! This one has some of the strongest writing in the Chibnall era, and is a fun horror mystery that serves as a fun introduction to Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. It has a little bit of series-wide arc, but that's okay.
10. The Church on Ruby Road (2023 Special 4)
Tumblr media
If your person liked all those episodes but still doesn't want to watch 13 seasons of TV, just abandon ship and watch the 2023 Christmas special in preparation for Series 14 (or Season 1) in Spring 2024. The Church on Ruby Road is the beginning of the latest soft reboot of the show and has been explicitly created as a jumping on point for new fans. Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson absolutely shine in this special, it's fun and silly and in my opinion bodes very well for the next season of Doctor Who...
"in 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important" - Bannakaffalatta
I hope that was a success! After all those episodes hopefully you either had a good time with whoever you were watching it with, or you've already moved onto Series 1! I'll be trying this out the best I can with my girlfriend this year, so look out, because I may be back with adjustments later...

S1:E01 - Welcome to the Hellmouth (Part 12)
This concludes Welcome to the Hellmouth
We've learned that Giles looks handsome no matter the lighting, situation, or setting. He needs to learn some boundaries in his new role as librarian. Grabbing the Slayer might result in an injury. And he's ill prepared for a strong, independent Slayer.

HIRAGI TSUBASA'S CHARACTER ARC IN STARMYU IS JUST SO AMAZING.
Tumblr media
In the first few episodes, we get a sense that this dude is super strict. It's after S1 E06 where we learn about his history with Otori Itsuki.
And, yes, I was balling in S1 E09. You can't tell me that their duet wasn't heartbreaking. YOU CAN'T.
What's interesting is the things you CAN'T find in the anime. For example, in SHOWTIME 9, Hiragi has a solo song titled "uncontrol". I realized it after reading the English translation of the lyrics that the song was about his feelings throughout S1 E09. The fact Otori was about to leave him again and he couldn't do anything to stop it, let alone go after him.
In the drama CDs set between S1 E14 and S2 E01, Otori and Hiragi have a conversation about their respective graduation parties held by their students. They, eventually, get to the topic about Hoshitani Yuta and his idol. Both of them know he's been idolizing Otori who is both a bit shy to admit it and he just doesn't want to strip Hoshitani of his dream.
THESE TWO, PLEASE
Tumblr media
Hiragi gets the idea that sets the entirety of S2 into motion and, yes, I do mean that twist we get in the post credits scene of S2 E10.
This guy goes from up-tight and strict child of the school's owner to loving younger brother and senpai.
The way they portray this character arc, with or without the Drama CDs and songs, was just brilliant and I'm here for it.

rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 (ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
Thank you so much @c0ffeebee for tagging me :D
Oh goshhhhhh. What are my favourites....
Well. These first two are easy!
 The City Two-Four
I think this is one of the best things I’ve ever written. Not even in the arrogant way. I don’t think this is the best thing ever written. It’s the best thing I have ever written. It’s.... really special to me. It started because I was so depressed and I needed a happier place to escape into. Some of my favourite scenes I’ve ever written are in here. I just... I cannot put into words how special this fic is to me. And I am so immensely grateful for the people who have enjoyed it as I’ve posted it.
portrait of the aftermath
This fic didn’t do as well as I’d have liked, I’mma like. Be too honest about that. But I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written.
step backward, step forward
This is the fic that sorta lead to what I call “museum ‘verse”. I just... wanted to see what’d happen if Klaus and Diego left the Academy together, and Klaus realised he could talk to ghosts in history, and started to become a sought after museum curator. This fic is set during S01.E01, but with very different results. It was also the beginning of this world where like... I basically was just “i wanna be super self-indulgent”. Diego and Klaus having smart phones because I wanted them to have pictures of their lives together? Done. Diego and Klaus getting married? Fuck yeah. Them having a big ass, fancy apartment, and being blissfully in love and having had therapy? You got it!
a collection of memories
I’m sensing a theme XD Look, museum ‘verse is important to me! This was rather hastily put together, in terms of writing, but was something I’d been thinking about since June. It has a lot of ~answers~ to some of the questions people ask me. “What would happen in S1? Does Klaus get kidnapped? Does he go back in time? Does Diego go after him?” etc. It also features a delicious bit of angst.
all eyes on you
Possibly the most iddiest of idfics I’ve ever written. I just.... really love this piece....... My beta said I went “hard” on this. And honestly, this was probably the first time I wrote something and just absolutely, 1000% leaned in.
so, apparently, we’re doing this
I don’t even know, guys. I just don’t. I wrote it. I was ashamed. I still love it so very much, and have no regrets.
*
I mean, ngl, I’m proud of a LOT of the stuff I wrote. There’s also some stuff that apparently left so little impact in my mind that when I went to Ao3 to see what I’d written, I couldn’t even remember that I’d ever written some of them XD
As for tagging... I tag: anyone that wants to do it, plus @electra-xt, @emptydistractions12, @unrememberedskies, @cultleaderklaus, @rappaccini, @sarkywoman, @forestdivinity, @melivian, and just. Really. Anyone that wants to do it. Show me the things you loved that you created!! Brag!!! Be proud!! :D

S1:E01 “The Emissary” Parts 1 & 2
Stardate 43997. An arbitrary number with - I’m pretty sure - no chronological continuity.
Wolf 359. Where it all started. Or did it, as they ret-conned six seasons later begin a year or so before Benjamin Sisko’s birth? We can fuss about that later.
For now, we begin the umpteenth re-watch of the best Trek ever.
Ha! The opening credits show the name Siddig El Fadil as the actor playing Dr Bashir. In later seasons he’ll be credited by his new professional name, Alexander Siddig, which he chose because people have difficulty pronouncing his true name, apparently. Incidentally, his true full name is  Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderrahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi - but more on that in another entry.
This came out in 1993. Wow. I was... young (and we’ll leave it at that).
Baby Jake is wearing quasi overalls. The fashion on this show.
I once tried to get my friend Autumn into DS9 and showed her this episode. When the Chief shows Sisko and Jake to their quarters Jake complains and Sisko tells him they’ll have to tough it out. Jake says, “okay,” and Sisko repeats the word, mocking his tone and lack of masculinity. Autumn looked at me at that moment as if to say: what the fuck was that? “Fathers and sons,” I told her.
Colm is looking slim in this episode.
Tumblr media
Kira’s hair. Oh my. Let’s blame the styling on the stumbles endemic to pilot episodes and the early 90′s.
Wait a sec - Kira’s hair is quite different in the next scene (arresting Wee Nog). Perhaps the curly floofs were considered necessary glamour for her debut?
Neither Quark nor Odo’s prosthetics have settled. Not nearly.
Sisko’s orb vision: oh my lordy, early 90′s beach attire. As Sisko himself declares, “Ow!”
Morn is here in the first episode. Someone had to point out to me, semi-recently, that Morn is an anagram of Norm.
The airlock opens and the Bashir annoyathon begins. The writers’ fault, not Sid’s.
Tumblr media
First visit to the wormhole: “we just landed.” Wormhole travel really changed after this episode.
“It must be destroyed,” says one of the Prophets about Sisko’s presence. Yeah, this was before streaming, binge-watching, and DVDs. I suppose the writers felt they could reasonably get away with, six seasons later, changing the nature of the Prophets’ relationship with Sisko in such a manner that this entire exchange would make no sense.
Sisko attempting to explain not just “loss” (Jennifer) but the normative nature of linear existence... There’s a lot to unpack here.
Tumblr media
A detail in set decoration I’m only now just noticing: during the wormhole baseball game vision there’s an old bus parked by the diamond - it says Chicago Cubs. A nice bit of art department. Making it the Kansas City Monarchs would have been even better but we’ll take what we can.
“We are explorers. We explore our lives, day by day.” This is the essence of the show. The journey inward, rather than the missionary outward journey that the Enterprise always goes on. The reason so many whiny fanboys complained about the show diverting from the familiar formula - that they don’t have a big ship going zoom zoom every episode, resetting the story every 41 minutes. This was the strength of DS9.
And with the final shot I can only think: how I wish this could get the HD treatment.

What are your favorite episodes of gossip girl? And why are they your favorites? I love your blog btw!
ahhh i wanted to like, do a really thoughtful response to this, so i sat on it for a while. i'm thinking i'll just give you the ones off the top of my head, and whenever i think of more i'll add them! i have episodes that i love and are kind of the heart of the show, to me, and then i have episodes that i really really like, so making a list like this feels complicated, LKHDFLKG. more under the cut! <3
to begin with, i actually do have a favourite gg episode! it's 2x06. like if i could only ever watch one episode of gg for the rest of my life, it'd be that one. it has everything i vibe with! jenny being happy! blairena fight + conflict resolution! dan and nate becoming friends after a series of mishaps that are extremely ridiculous! chuck brooding while he watches dan and nate flirt with each other! like this episode was written for me. there's no other way to say it.
i loved 2x07 as a follow-up to this, but the portrayal of chuck in this one was very.... what's the right word. like if you like chuck you'll like it, kind of thing, i think. but i loved dan navigating being nate's friend, figuring out boundaries, talking to serena about nate, etc. and i loved the van der bass family drama, and eric giving lily a talk on how to be a mom. like - it's sad, and i know it's sad - but it's also real, you know?
i also really like 3x09 - i'm guessing you sent me this ask after seeing the tags on that post i reblogged. i know this is not a popular fandom opinion but i actually really liked the danlivessa triad & hoped (naively) that they would become a polycule. in fact, i made the mistake of watching 3x09 for the first time right before a 2 hour lecture and i could think of nothing else but that polycule, i even wrote a fic about the three of them (which canon very cheerfully demolished with 3x10, RIP). but that polycule aside, i loved the blairena conversation in there. this is one of those episodes where you can really truly ABSOLUTELY see why blair and serena are best friends, and how much they love each other. also!!!! all the jenny and eric cotillion drama was fascinating. like - there was a Lot happening this episode and i loved it.
@mysteriesofloves has spoken on 1x04 here - i fully agree with everything she's said so i'm not going to write my own explanation. it's an episode with so much heart!!
i adore 4x16 mostly because sometimes, when uni work gets too overwhelming, i find blair in that episode extremely relatable. that's my shallow reason KLHFDLKGKL. nads has this meta here, but for me it's not even the dair of it all, it's just the thing of like- being a perfectionist! being ambitious!!! and then biting off more than you can chew and needing to admit that you fucked up - this is something i struggle with irl with tasks / duties / responsibilites, so this is kinda a comfort episode for me in that sense!
i also like 2x21 mostly because everyone is being a disaster and cyrus is just being the best! he wants things to go well! and nobody intends to cause drama, it just happens. serena's whole "dan i think i got married to some random guy!" really sends me, like, the whole episode has this vibe of surreality which is interesting to watch.
oh, i cannot neglect to mention 2x18. i love so much about that episode. the serenessa arc is so funny (there is flirting! i mean. of course there is.) nate & vanessa's fight + conflict resolution!!! blair realising that her actions have consequences & that she needs to be more mindful of that /that there are things her privilege cannot shield her from!! ngl i was really hoping that the narrative of the show would develop blair's character from there, give her some of that sweet sweet character growth.
i also, uh. i was trying to think of how i could tell you which s1 episodes i like, but the truth is the first half of s1 - i think from e01 to e12 or e13 - was just so perfect. like it really set the tone for the show, told us who these kids were, and what their messy world was like. it was so strongly done and i think for me at least, that's probably a big part of what made me actually watch the rest of the show! i wasn't planning on it. i had 40 min to kill one day and thought, why not watch the pilot of gossip girl just to kill time. clearly, as you can see, that is not what happened.
honourable mentions go to 1x09, because we really see what blair, serena & nate were like, pre-series, and 1x03, because i think that episode did a really good job at like - showing that blair was hurting serena because she was hurt while at the same time not excusing blair's actions but ALSO it's the first proper glimpse we get into blair & serena's dynamic as a whole. i also love 1x12 because we get derena talking about privilege + serena acknowledging/ understanding what that really means to some extent (the writers did them so dirty, like, they resolved this conflict already) and we ALSO get blairnessa friendship! i really wish blair & vanessa had been allies, they're both so determined in such similar ways.
the s4 dair arc esp from 4x10 to i think 4x17 (? or 4x16?) is a lot of fun. when it comes to s5, i liked 5x13 the first time i watched it (idk how it'll hold up on rewatch), 5x15, 5x16 and 5x21 (despicable b my beloved!!)
s6 sucks, but if you watch the last 5 or so minutes of 6x10 you will see nate eye-fucking dan at the derena wedding, which just goes to show that sometimes your niche gay otp CAN be canon.......people just haven't recognised it yet.
