Rogue Words (A Short Story)

“I love you,” I spoke out as the muscle pounding against my ribcage was only getting louder by the second; my smile growing just as rapidly. His fingers brushed against my cheeks and fell to his side once again. 

“I love you too.”

I did believe him. Just about anyone would have if they were in my situation, why would they not? I’m a smart girl, always have been and probably always will be. But, he was undeniably smarter.

He clasped my hand within his tightly as his legs started to move ahead of mine, I was forced to follow. We walked together in sync as the cities light blared against cool my skin. 

“Where are we going?” I asked as my red dress sprawled around my legs and out into the wind. 

“You’ll see.” He replied, not even sparing me a glance. 

I trusted him with everything I had, and he stabbed me where that trust once lied. Right into the muscle, that swiftly sped up every time his painfully dreary vocal cords vibrated. He left me cold and unwanted. Because he never needed me, nor did he love me. 

“I love you.” He spoke solemnly staring down at my defunct figure. That same red dress flowing into the wind. But only this time, it was soaked a shade darker.
