pls know most my life i thought zoeisite was a woman & the lesbians were cousins b/c america is WEIRD but you bringing sailor moon on dash has unlocked precious core memories even if the english dub is.. a thing that happened [ legit their english names are cemented in my head to this day thanks to toonami. tell me their japanese names and i just cry confusion into my hands as a young fan who didn't know better b/c i was literally like 5-8 years old ]

softly go bleach your roots creep is like cemented in my brain the dub was so unhinged and i loved every fucked up second of it.

trust me trying to follow the changes between sailor moon adaptations is a nightmare. like classic & its og eng dub are basically different canons with totally different characters.

zoisite became zoycite, and now fandom forever spells zoisite (the actual rock) with a c and i'll die mad about it.

kunzite became malachite? for... reasons?? i don't think anyone has ever come out and said why.

and the manga is its own thing. like legit totally different vibe than the 90s anime - they were happening concurrently so the anime team was mostly just taking naoko's notes and then going feral??? like kunzite and zoisite are more or less an extended reference to patalliro. jadeite gets run over by a plane at one point. its fucking great. but like not that great if you want development for the main heroines. usagi does develop, but the rest of the girls stay very stagnant. the development in each season is given to whatever ragtag group of villains are being puppeted by the big bad. s1 had the shitennou, s2 had ali & an at the start bc the first season wrote itself into a corner by having usagi reset the timeline and they had to unfuck that before they could get started on the dark moon which you know what is a really upsetting plot i stan it. then it had the dark moon kingdom which ... if i remmeber right were people banished from the silver millennium for not wanting to be immortal and being concerned about all powerful monarchs? but they were corrupted. something something i would play saphir. s3 had the death busters and hotaru's hot dad. s4 had the amazon trio and the amazon quartet. and s5 had the sailor animates and i will die for lead crow & aluminium seiren's romance. so like if you care about the senshi as characters i don't really rec the 90s version on its own

and then there's sailor moon crystal which was supposed to be more faithful to the manga but was a ffffffffffucking mess. seriously i have never seen such ugly animation or bizarre animation choices for an ip that was lauded & is still upheld as having some of the most gorgeous backgrounds and animation in the genre. morimo clover z did the op and it slaps so like there's that but the rest of it is something else. it should be noted that the animation improves from season 3 onwards but they eventually just said fuck it and made movies out of the rest of it which is a bummer!

and then there's pretty guardian sailor moon (the live action drama which is THE BEST ADAPTATION I WILL GO TO WAR OVER THIS) which features all of the girls having an actual existential crisis over what it means to be reborn princesses from distant stars, it also gives them the spotlights they absolutely did not get in crystal or the og anime AND the shitennou get a lot of development.

and then theres the musicals.

These two are illegally constructed mecha made from Deckerd's stolen blueprints in another secret daughter-company that was founded by Victim O'Rand. After his second death, the company dissolved and most of its employees went to work for another underground organization that had accumulated all the data they needed to make more robots with Super A.I. The two mecha were left behind, but the Scotland Yard Braves found them and took them in.

Super Giant Robot Brothers:

Pointy is one of the failed G.R.I.T.S. contestants. An alien from the Empire finds his discarded frame on the scrap yard and steals it to gather more information about the EDF. The Empire starts building their own robots and deploys them during their battles against the Resistance in outer space, but they are too ineffective and faulty to last long. After Overlord Master is defeated and the his spaceship docks, a surge goes through the entire ship, activating the brothers Pointy, Crusader and Splendor and granting them sentience. They flee and join the Resistance in search for the imperial mother ship's location and fighting their other imperial siblings who could not escape Overlord Master's influence.

This story does not exist yet. Not outside of a large document, that is. It is about the life and struggle of a society of alien cyborgs, inspired by five different franchises (Metroid, Transformers, Astral Chain, Tron, Warrior Cats). The original idea was actually a Transformers x Sailor Moon crossover my cousin and I came up with, and then we just took the parts we contributed to it and made it our own thing. She created a magical girl story, I wrote about cyborgs and space and war.

In the end, I might never publish anything about it, but my OCs still exist and bits of them they carry over to all the other franchises as well, such as their names, their personality, their concept and more. And I intended for the main character to have an over-the-top name, because I found it funny and I really don't want to change it. It is ridiculous, but I love it.

Aw, thanks friend! Thanks for the ask! I love your questions and I'm going to answer both parts. Please note I will have massive spoilers for everything. This is also long, so it's under a cut.

Let's start with my favourite ships!

Favourite ships

I have many ships but I want to talk about some I haven't talked about lots.

Fai/Kurogane (Tsubasa)

Where do I even begin with this ship? From moment one these two were set up as character foils. Fai's design is light, airy, and full of whites and blues. He's tall, lean, and built like a dancer. He smiles a lot, is friendly, and enjoys light teasing. There is an elegance to him, almost as if he's a breeze personified and equally as difficult to catch.

Kurogane's design is heavier, grounded, and full of blacks and reds. He's muscular, built, and moves like a lion: graceful but full of power and strength. He scowls, comes off as prickly, and hates teasing. He's the quiet but brutal strength of a hunter taking down its prey.

This is where CLAMP could have stopped, really. This is a clear blue/red ship. But they didn't. Instead they went the extra steps to completely and utterly separate Fai and Kurogane's ideals, morals, philosophies, and perspectives on life. And see, that's what utterly rips my soul apart regarding these two as a ship: they both complete and utterly destroy one another.

I will never, ever forget the moment when Yuuko reveals the cost of Kurogane's wish to save Fai. The dead, cold look Fai gives Kurogane before showing the reader, for the first time, the hollowness of his smile. Then, the line, "Good morning, Kurogane" absolutely destroys me. With a single line of dialogue, CLAMP showed how their relationship will never be the same again. Their dynamic haunts me even years after finishing reading the series.

Tohru/Kyo (Fruits Basket)

First, Fruits Basket is my favourite shoujo series of all time. If I was asked, I'd go on a full rant about the entire series.

Anyways, Tohru/Kyo is a ship I love with all my heart and soul because of one core message it presents: No one can entirely fix you, some of the work has to be your own. Both Tohru and Kyo come with so much baggage they're practically a cargo ship before the series even starts. Yet, through the series neither Tohru and Kyo entirely "fix" one another. They support, listen, and care for one another, but there is never the message "I will fix you" presented. Both Tohru and Kyo have issues they need to work out on their own and problems they both ignored until they couldn't any longer.

And none of the solutions were presented as "I need the other to save me". Rather, the solutions are "You helped me find the courage to face this problem and while I am scared, I will do it. After, I know you will be there to continue supporting me".

This is why they are such a great ship and why this series is one of my favourites.

Haruka/Michiru AKA Sailor Uranus/Sailor Neptune (Sailor Moon)

There are a lot of reasons why I like this ship. To start, even as a child I -knew- something was up and they were NOT cousins. Next, they're a power couple. That episode in the original anime where they go to that "couple's" competition and effortlessly win? They're not just in love, they're basically soulmates.

However, I think I'll sum up why this is one of my favourite ships with one line "Oh, it seems you misunderstood... a world without Haruka isn't worth saving".

Look, this was the 90s. "Good" and "Bad" characters were usually pretty straightforward. This line here though? That's one of the most morally ambiguous lines from a character that's supposed to be "good" in any series I've watched. Neptune (Michiru) would rather watch the world burn than to lose Haruka (Uranus). That's Homura's "I'm going to make the world burn and people die just so I can have Madoka with me" Devil mode that didn't come out until 2011. Sailor Moon threw this absolute BANGER of a line in (I believe) season 5 which aired in 1996.

Cute Fic Ideas

I don't have too many "cute" ideas, but here are a few:

-I want to write a Twisted Wonderland fic where the staff of NRC dote on Yuu.

-Maybe a very soft Yuu/Everyone fic? Not too sure since I don't want to write a heavy "shipping" fic with Yuu.

-An actual good timeline Shouichi fic. I know, it's shocking. I want to write another Outsider POV fic or a very confused Shouichi being dragged clothing shopping by Kikyo.

-There is some sort of follow up to my Kitsune!Komaeda marries ordinary Hajime fic that I should probably write. Maybe touching on Munakata's offer of immortality. Really, this entire series is one you think I'm done and then I surprise everyone.

And uh... that's it. Sorry, I can't think of more, though there probably are more. I have ideas but they don't fit the "cute" category... (and one of those is a Shouichi fic. I'm sorry...)

Pointy is one of the failed G.R.I.T.S. contestants. An alien from the empire finds his discarded frame on the scrap yard and steals it to gather more information about the EDF. The empire starts building their own robots and deploys them during their battles against the Resistance in outer space, but they are too ineffective and faulty to last long. After the Overlord Master is defeated and the hand spaceship docks, a surge goes through the entire ship, which activates the brothers Pointy, Crusader and Splendor and grants them sentience. They flee and join the Resistance, searching for the imperial mother ship's location and fighting their other imperial siblings who could not escape the Overlord Master's influence.

Light of Aether - Original Story:

This story does not exist yet. Not outside of a large document, that is. It is about the life and struggle of a society of alien cyborgs, inspired by five different franchises (Metroid, Transformers, Astral Chain, Tron, Warrior Cats). The original idea was actually a Transformers x Sailor Moon crossover my cousin and I came up with, and then we just took the parts we contributed to it and made it our own thing. She created a magical girl story, I wrote about cyborgs and space and war.

In the end, I might never publish anything about it, but my OCs still exist and bits of them they carry over to all the other franchises as well, such as their names, their personality, their concept and more. And I intended for the main character to have an over-the-top name, because I found it funny and I really don't want to change it. It is ridiculous, but I love it.

I consider Sailor Moon+Dragon Ball ‘creative cousins’

As in they are two series which at face value seem to be the opposite of one another but have more in common the deeper you look.

Time travelling pink haired children of main characters.

The protagonists defined via their pure hearts.

The moon playing a pivotal role in the storylines

Arcs explicitly about averting apocalyptic futures

Both bake in a lot of mythology and ancient cultural values

Main characters get corrupted by evil magic users and power up via a black forehead tattoo

Arguably the darkest story arcs entail mad scientists unleashing scientific horrors upon the world (Dr. Tomoe with the Daimons and Dr. Gero with his Artificial Humans)

Arguably the most iconic villains of both series are would-be Galactic emperors touted as the most powerful entities in the universe (Freeza and Galaxia)

The children of the main character becoming the deuteragonist

...Characters losing relevancy over time even though they stick around the series...

Those are maybe all a bit superficial.

But I think on a meta level their ‘companionship’ goes a little deeper.

Obviously DB is fundamentally geared towards a young male audience and SM towards a young female audience.

But looking at both stories it’s almost like they balance one another out because each of them is so quintessentially a power fantasy for their respective demographics; at least for their respective time periods which obviously overlapped.

Sailor Moon was THE definitive shojo series of it’s era and Dragon Ball (Z) was THE definitve shonen series of it’s era.* Respectively both actively imbibed (arguably stereotypical) female and male elements and values into the foundations of their stories, it wasn’t merely incidental.

To me this evokes how ancient religions epitomised a male and female goddess as the counterparts to one another. Or if you want to be way less pretentious it’s a little like how in America Superman and Wonder Woman are the archetypical male and female wish fulfilment super heroes.

*I’m not Japanese so maybe this is untrue, but I suspect that holds true even today and internationally. As popular as Pretty Cure and One Piece (imo the clear successors to DB+SM) I feel when most people across the world think of a shonen/shojo anime/manga Usagi and Goku will be the first images that come to most peoples’ minds.

P.S. To continue the idea of the 2 franchises ‘balancing’ against one another DB’s anime relatively faithfully adapted the manga but added a lot of unpopular filler. SM’s anime was relatively unfaithful to the manga but had a lot of popular filler. In the 21st century both had had updated versions that go more faithful to the manga by removing filler but to opposing reactions from the fanbase.

Also whilst the SM franchise is largely defined by each iteration being distinct from one another (the 90s anime, Crystal, manga, live action shows and musicals are all very different to one another) DB’s franchise has been defined via retaining the same story at it’s core and then expanding it in different ways. E.g. the majority of DB video games endlessly retell the Dragon Ball Z portions of the manga.

Pop Princess (Sweet Pea x Afro-Latina Reader)

Summary: Reader has been friends with Sweet Pea forever and is crushed when he gets with Josie over the summer. It takes place in the Labor Day episode because the pool party was cute.

You stand twisting the tops of Oreos free from their creme filling while licking the sugary filling from between them and stacking the chocolate cookies on one another as you stare vaguely at the two love birds sitting on the edge of the pool.

Her silky curls swaying freely as her sunny floral suit hugs her frame just right. Her deep brown skin shines in the hot summer sun like she's been sprinkled with her fairydust. Her acutely defined cheekbones shine with natural highlight.  

And there he is fawning over her.  His lips on hers. Hands gripping her inner thigh. Fingertips tracing the small her back.  

Her fingers lacing into his charcoal locks. Her hand gripping his sculpted bicep. Her lips curling into a coy smile when she draws back.

God they make me sick.

“Don't swallow each other.” You mutter shoveling a chocolate wafer in your mouth.

“Prima, maybe save some for everyone else.” The basey chuckle of your cousin followed by his firm hand on your shoulder coming much too abruptly startles you.  You practically jump out of skin and send the majority of the chocolate shells crashing to the concrete.

“Jesus Fangs! I was saving those!!” You scowl and turn with arms pinned across your chest.

“Y/n, you don't have to stare like it's the end of the world. Summer is practically over and you're over here pining over Pea's latest fling while bodying half a pack of oreos.” Fangs sighs placing an arm around your tensed shoulders.

“I'm not pining.” You mumble repositioning the bow on your sailor moon two piece. Your serpent tattoo proudly on display down your side tapering off at your hip. The suit's frills drawing attention to your curves in all the right ways.

Wasted.

“Suuuuure. Come on I need a partner for beer pong. Mantle and Andrews think they can take me.” He laughs elbowing you roughly in the side beckoning you to follow. You shove him away and follow behind.

“In their flea bitten dreams. Serpents can take a couple of mutts any day.” You snort stalling just long enough to take in surrounding party.

Toni right next to Cheryl. Kevin and Moose lounge side by reading and stealing glances from one another every now and again. Unsurprisingly Veronica and Betty sit side by side chatting away.

And Josie whispering into Pea's ear before hopping to her feet and sashaying away. His eyes never leave her frame. They follow her swaying hips as if he's in a trance. To say he’s head over heels is putting it nicely.

She better be good to you.

You thought narrowing your eyes and catching up with Fangs.

...

“Sweet Pea. You guys keep a lookout.” Jughead says in a hushed tone as he grabs the pliers and hops out of the parked truck. Hot Dog whines at the sight of Jug.

“Ghoulie bastards.” You mutter picking at your nails nervously as you shift in the seat next to Pea. Wordlessly Sweet Pea pulled your hand into his giving it a small squeeze. He didn't turn his eyes from Jug or Hot Dog. He just held your hand because he knew you needed him to and you were too macho to ask.  

For a moment you let yourself believe this meant more. For a moment he wasn't head over heels for a girl as close as it gets to northside royalty. and perfect in so many ways it makes your blood boil. And in that moment he might love you like you love him.

“Hiya Jonesie! Welcome back to the Southside!”

The snide hiss of Penny Peabody's voice pulls you from your teen fantasy and you tug your hand from Pea's.

Sweet Pea looks back into your e/c eyes with what just might have been slight disappointment. You grip the chrome bat tightly in both fists and sling it over your shoulder. He nods.

“I thought this mangy mutt might get you show up.” Penny sneers. Something about seeing that skank next a bunch of Ghoulies calling the dog you all helped raise after everything the serpents did for her and she still has the guts to call Hot Dog a “mangy mutt” set you off. Before you could even think you’re slamming open the door.  

“YOU’RE LUCKY I DON'T SMASH YOU MANGY TURNCOAT FACE IN!” You snarl climbing out of the truck and sliding over the hood with bat outstretched.  

“Oh if it isn't my favorite firecracker, Y/n L/n. Still waiting for Mommy to come home?” Penny cackles.

“I'LL KNOCK YOUR FUCKING TEETH IN!”

Before you could rush her and back up your threat the car door has opened and closed, and Sweet Pea's arms are around your waist. He holds you firmly to his chest. You squirm trying your best to free yourself so you can claw that wench's eyes right  out of her skull. Pea doesn't give any lead way.

“Calm down!” Pea says curtly into your ear.

His faint flower musk making it hard to concentrate on your already quieting rage. He had that effect on you and he knew it.

“Like Hell I Am!” You bark

“You'll get your chance. Just wait. Peabody's gonna get hers.” He spoke so firmly and cooly it unnerves you.

Since when does “let's burn this school to the ground” Sweet Pea wait?

Since Josie.

The calmness of the moment burns to ashes as deep green jealousy heats under your skin.

“Since when do you wait, Sweets?!? All that time on the Northside is making you soft!” It falls from your lips too quick to stop yourself. The unintended venom in your words hits him at his core. You could feel it in the way his body stiffens and breathing hitches.

Shit

“Sweets I didn't me-”

He let you go so suddenly you almost don't caught yourself. You swallow the welling guilt turning circles in your stomach. Just as you charge Fangs has your wrist and the glare he gives you practically turns you to stone.

Just like that Cheryl loses an arrow and hits Mordecai square in the shoulder.

You miss the rest of Penny's and Jughead's schoolyard taunts as your heart beats thunderously in your own ear drums.  

Shit. Dumbass.

Jughead is back to the car with Hot Dog. You hop into the bed instead of your spot next to Pea. Betty eagerly takes the open seat next to Jughead and showers the shell shocked pup with as much affection as he can take as we speed off. Further you guys get away the more the silence tapers off, and jokes and laughter fill the truck as you argue over who'll keep Hot Dog.

…

Naturally your ragtag crew makes their way to Pop's for celebration of a successful rescue mission. Jug and Betty left first. Something about her curfew and wanting to get Hot Dog home.

Toni and Cheryl slipped off next. Toni attempts offering some phony excuse before Cheryl interrupts to declare they are going to make love in her bedroom at thornhill.  

It was just you, Fangs, and Sweet Pea left, now.  

“Well I'm pretty beat.” Fangs yawns shuffling out of the booth to stretch.

The tension settles between you and Sweet Pea again. The light heartedness of the meal at Pop's has not wiped away your words from earlier. Pea's dark eyes meet yours with absolute certainty. He's pissed and you guys are gonna talk. Your brown skin crawls under his hot gaze.

“Primo, espérame! Puedo dormir en tu casa esta noche!” You shout racing behind the only line defense between you and Sweet Pea. You are more than sure your explanation would only make a bad situation worse.

"No! No no no! Tengo la compañía. Quédate por favor!”

“No worries, chicas. Y/n can crash at my place tonight.” Sweet Pea smiles catching your wrist.

“Have fun, Dorks!” Fangs beams hugging you before flipping Pea off and making a b line for the door.

You settle back into the opposite side of the booth with a uncomfortable grin smeared to your lips. Hands pressed between your thighs as you sheepishly meet his eyes.

“Jesus, Y/n! Breathe! I'm not gonna kill you.” Sweet Pea sighs rolling his eyes to look out the window.

“I know.” You exhale removing the slightest tension from your shoulders.  

He’s a lot easier to look at when he didn't have those nearly black eyes trained on you like he was going to kill you. His charcoal locks framed his face in just the right way.  His olive toned skin shines in the pale fluorescent light. You could easily remember why he makes your knees so weak and you forget all the witty things you want to say.

It wasn't always like that.

Sweet Pea was just another boy once.

The summer before freshman year changed that. The endless days spent at the quarry and the weeks spent learning the laws together. The days leading up to your initiation spent planning out your tattoo locations and wear you'd keep your jackets. The first time you told him and Fangs your dad hits you when he's drunk. The first time he saw you cry. The first time you realized how warm and soft Pea's hands were. How his shoulder were just starting to get broad. And how he was still bumping into thing as he adjusted to his new height after yet another late spring-early summer growth spurt. And the way he was looking down at you all of a sudden when you'd just been the tallest the summer before. You wouldn't  let yourself believe you loved him.

Not yet.

Not until it was too late.

That night you knew. That night you'd tell him on the 5th day of summer. He came in buzzing about her. Josie.  He didn't see your heart shatter.  You realized too late. You weren't really content to be at his side. You'd much prefer to be on it. But you didn't think you could ever lose him. Especially not to the Northside.

“Do you not like Josie or something?” He shrugs sounding like he had been stabbed in the heart. His words pull you back to now.

“No Pea. No of course not. She's pretty and talented and great...” You say genuinely as you can. He smirks at the the reluctance behind your voice.

Even though you can't be sure of her motives, you know that's she's an awesome girl.

She's perfect.

Hell even when her family falls apart she falls smack dab into a new one.  And here you were hanging onto the scraps you had left.

“I'm not shedding my skin for her, N/n. We're just having some fun.” He hums grinning a little bit wider than usual.  He probably doesn't even notice his face is doing it. It just happens when he talks about her.

“Sweets I'm happy for you.” You mutter with all the conviction you can muster.

You can feel your e/c eyes getting glassy and throat getting sticky. You start picking at your nails. You knew if he pushed anymore you'd break. You'd spill everything.

No. Not now! Just a little longer.

Just Not Now.

“N/n What's eating you?” He speaks so softly as his pulls your hand into his.

The only thing you can think of is how much Josie must love it when Pea holds her hand like that. Like he's holding the world. Like he has to hold the weight of all the pain that you have ever felt.

“Is Vic hitting you again?! CAUSE IF HE IS I CAN GO KICK HIS A-”  He huffs beginning to rise. His calm easily flaming into rage when came to your plastered Dad putting his hands on you.

You shake your head as you brush your thumb across the hand squeezed tightly around yours.

“Nah Pea. I've barely been home all summer. I was planning to go see him after the trial or something.” You give a weak reassuring smile while squeezing his hand.

Sweet pea raised a suspicious eyebrow.

“Pea, he's my dad. I've gotta make sure he's okay even tho he's a complete shit show.” You shrug. Now It's your turn to look out the window.  

“Hey, I get it. I mean I really do,” He chuckles bucking his eyes while the scene of his own mom kicking him out at 13 plays in his head, “I'll be your backup. You don't have to go it alone.” He breathes out deeply pressing his thumb into your fingers.

You can't help but let the butterflies flutter in your chest.

Pea in his own way is a knight. Always crashing in ready to help you conquer any dragon you'd face. In so many ways he's fantastical but extraordinarily human.    

But not yours.

A quiet hurt creeps back into your eyes. It doesn't go unnoticed.

“Y/n?”

“Pea, don't you have plans with Josie?” You laugh longingly knowing as their expiration creeps closer the more time he'd want to spend time with her. You might as well bow out gracefully.

You refuse to be the “serpent slut” who stole him away.

He had to really chose you.

Not halfway.

Not out of lust or pity or desperation.

But really pick you.

Sweet Pea's warm concerned smile fades as he draws back from you and places his hand in his lap.

“Why do you think I'd pick her over you. You know how much that hurts coming from you.”

You couldn't help the cool laughter that bubbles up your throat.

“Sweets, you already have! But Hell she struck first. I just didn't expect her to get anywhere with you, I guess. I always figured I had time.” You croak taking a hand to cover your mouth as the tears stream down each cheek.

God Not Now.

“N/n, you don't mean?” He breathed like he's afraid to say it. His face mixed between shock and disbelief.

The scene unfolding in your little booth in Pop's dinner is leaps and bounds away from what you pictured in your head.  This is not how It's supposed to go.

You nod pressing your tears into the cool leather sleeves on your folded arm across the table.

“No. No no no no. Y/n, You Can't. Not Right Now! Not Now!” He panics as absolute uncertainty muddies his features.

Your head snaps up indignantly. Puffy e/c eyes burn with white hot fury at his ludicrous request.

“Sweets, You think I haven't tried. I've been telling myself that since the summer after 8th grade. Pleading with myself not fall for someone I can't have. Not to fall in love with my best friend. Not to fall in love with the way you know just when I need you to hold my hand. The way your eyes burn when you stand up for what you believe in. The way you won't let me fall apart and shut everyone out. The way you pretend you couldn't care less about classes and getting a quality education ,but raved for a solid two hours about how you could finally take some honor courses after the transfer when it was just you and me. Sweets, I know how inconvenient this is. Trust me I do. But You Make It So Damn Hard To Not To.” You chuckle snorting a little bit at your own absurdity.

“Y/n.” He murmurs just staring at you wide mouthed and a little dazed.

You shuffle out of the booth pulling a crinkled five dollar bill from your pocket and setting on the table. You run out the door and whip your bike out of the parking lot before he has a chance to even get up let alone follow you.

Aru Shah (Pandava Quartet) - This list is just going in the order they occur to me, and Aru Shah and the End of Time is still pretty fresh in my mind so let’s start with Aru!  It was between Aru and Mini, but in the end I chose Aru for her quick thinking, determination, and sass.  I also loved her arc with her relationship with her mother and her desire to fit in.

Princess Koriand’r (DC Comics) - Kory is the strong, passionate, heroic princess of my heart and one half of my all time DC OTP.  She probably would’ve been first in my mind if I hadn’t just read Aru’s book recently.  

Meiling Li (Cardcaptor Sakura) - It was hard to pick one favorite because the three core girls are all great, but I’m really feeling the Meiling love lately.  I love her moxie.  This is the girl with no magic, the black sheep of the Li clan, and she marches right into danger alongside her cousin.  She stares down magical phenomena and punches them with her bare fists.

Kamala Khan (Marvel Comics) - I really need to catch up on Ms Marvel, but I love Kamala’s dedication to doing good, her resourcefulness, and her enthusiasm.

Jane Foster (MCU) - Unfortunately, between being written out with a single line in Ragnarok and her comics counterpart probably dying, Jane’s probably going to go from underappreciated to unappreciated, which is a shame because she’s great!  She’s brilliant, driven, and incredibly relatable.

Kimberly Hart (Power Rangers) - Kimberly was my favorite way back when I was a kid, and reading the new Boom! Studios comics has really brought that love back.  And I really feel for her family situation now in a way I didn’t as a kid.  Also, gotta love a girl who appreciates the boxing glove arrow.

Piper Halliwell (Charmed) - I’ve started poking at the earlier half of Charmed recently, and while some of it doesn’t quite hold up, I do still genuinely love Piper.  Between her sense of humor and her altruistic instincts, Piper’s pretty great.  And she and Leo surprised me by still being OTP tier.

Annabeth Chase (PJO/HOO) - This series has a lot of great girls, so it was another hard choice, but Annabeth had the strongest roots in my heart, since she’s been around since the Lightning Thief.  I love how smart and fierce Annabeth is.

Sadie Kane (Kane Chronicles) - Piggybacking off of Annabeth, reading the Staff of Serapis short story where she teams up with Sadie was what convinced me to buy and read the Kane Chronicles.  Because Sadie is just that much fun.

Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) - Usagi’s another one I loved as a kid and then rediscovered later on.  She’s brave despite her fears and endlessly compassionate, but I also really feel her procrastination habit.

The Decision

When my sire came to me and told me that Grandmother and Grandfather had decided to send me with the sailors, I didn’t believe him. My mother’s spirit was still hovering in the air, the smoke from her funeral pyre still scenting the trees and her ashes still coloring the waves milky. I hated him in that moment- hated all of it. I wanted my life back- my mother, my sisters, my aunties and uncles and cousins. I wanted the Tia who had been wooing me, promising to get his banded tattoo and challenge my sire as soon as the rainy season turned.

He wouldn’t listen to me, though. And I admit I could not look into his eyes still bloodred from mourning my mother, smell the scent of the void on him, hear the broken heart in his voice, and tell him no. I couldn’t look at my people, at the ones I have loved and the few cubs I have trained that remain, at the diminished cookfires and the sickness wracked bodies. I wanted to stay. I wanted to close my eyes and run away. What I wanted, I wanted, I wanted…

I learned as a child, when a fire elemental burned my hand for reaching for the beautiful, dancing core at its center, that wanting something for myself this way was dangerous. I should have remembered this. Maybe then, it would not hurt so much to stand here on the shore, yalms from my mother’s ghost, watching the big ship send it’s small boat out into the bay. My heart would not ache with the need to look back. My hands would not be trembling, weighted down by jewelry both created for me and given to me by all my family. There are three bags at my feet- my clothing, my belongings, and the gifts I am being given. Why the tribe is entrusting me with these things I do not know- sacred elements of our rites and rituals, medicines, samples of so many different kinds of plants and animals and earth that I don’t really know what they’ve actually packed, only that it is so heavy it causes my shoulders to ache.

I will be back in a few moons, I’m certain of it, so all this fuss seems unnecessary. Perhaps it is the unavoidable loss of so many that is driving them to all of this- at least this loss is temporary, it is controlled, I am not vanishing in the night to return as a twisted terror. Still… I wish I could erase the look in my families eyes, my sisters eyes, the eyes of my lovers. I know they’re in the trees behind me, watching the little boat row-row-row across the bay. Watching me. It makes me stand taller, my shoulders set firm, feeling the sun on my skin and the weight of gold. I can faintly feel my gem, as always half-hearing the voice of my ancestors giving encouragement and suggestions.

When the sailors finally come far enough ashore for me to wade into the water… I can’t help but look back. It is that shadowed image of my people fading away into the jungle that I will hold in my heart when I am alone. Surely, only a few moons, and the Lady will guide me back with good news and a new home.

Basically Kourubi, Ryou, and Mai are the same age as the rest of the Konoha 12. Instead of having her consciousness swap places, Kourubi is simply a reincarnation.

Mage/Familiar AU

AKA: “Baby, There’s Magic in You”

Set in a fantasy version of the Elemental Nations, humanity is split into three categories: normal humans with no magical potential, mages who have large stores of mana that they can manipulate, and familiars, shapeshifters who have access to natural magical energy (or ‘chakra’) which allow them to change between an animal form and a human form. Each familiar has a ‘tell’ that gives away their animal form as well as a singular magical talent powered by their chakra. Mages bond with familiars in order to perform magic.

Black Cat AU

AKA: “A Black Cat Followed Me Home”

In which Ryou’s sassy mouth pisses off the Hokage and ends up getting him custody over Sasuke instead of Kourubi. Kourubi’s attention is pretty much solely focused on Naruto, leading her to officially adopt him as her younger brother, tell off Jiraiya at every opportunity, and leave with the two of them when they go off on their training mission. Mai, feeling left out of the whole ‘protege’ thing, ends up taking Sakura under her wing. The end result: healer/weapons expert Sasuke, brawler Sakura, and swordsman/seal expert Naruto.

Kourubi’s folks aren’t as much on the up and up as originally thought, and arranged for her to marry the Uchiha spare before she was even born. And then they don’t bother to tell her until she brings Sasuke home after the Third Exam prelims. Ryou is also stuck in an arranged marriage to Neji, though he’s not sure if it still stands after he ran away. He’s thinking probably.

In which team 3 works at a little coffee shop on the corner of campus that’s frequented by too many hot people and they complain about it. Featuring Running “club” Kourubi and friends, and “Runners appreciation club” Ryou and Mai, who honestly just want Kourubi to keep hydrated while they watch butts move in tight shorts. Kakashi and Iruka are their faculty sponsors but they’re not entirely sure how they got there.

Emo Punk!Team 3 Modern AU

AKA: This is what happens when you hear ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ for the first time in like two years, and then your friend encourages you (hi again, erik)

Team 3 are college freshmen. Kourubi is the ‘music saved me’ emo who wears band shirts almost exclusively, and when she’s not, she’s wearing anime graphic tees. She double majors in Music Theory and something like History or International Studies. Mai is the classic leather jacket punk who lives in her leather jacket and combat boots except when she’s living in her jacket covered in patches about beating up cat-callers and being a lesbian (plus an aspec solidarity patch for Kou’s sake). She’s a Women’s/Gender and Sexuality Studies major and probably rides a motorcycle. Ryou sits somewhere between pop-punk and scene emo and pretty much only shops at Hot Topic. He’s a nursing major who drinks his coffee black with a monster energy drink dumped into it during finals week.

Kakashi is the grad student who somehow always ends up as the TA of any and all lit classes they take. No one knows if he actually goes to class and he won’t answer any questions about what his field of study actually is. A purveyor of ‘poor college student chic’ he goes places for the free shirts and leaves immediately after getting one. He’s worn the same jeans all week.

Iruka is a Early Childhood Education Major who’s so straight-laced and sweet that it gives people cavities. Sweaters are a staple of his wardrobe. Also cardigans. He carries around coloring books and crayons during dead week and passes them out to people who look like they’re about to cry. He, Kakashi, and Genma are the triangular core of normalcy around which the weirdness revolves. But everyone has a few marbles loose, so this doesn’t end up meaning much.

Genma is the Farmer’s Market Hot (TM) single dad who is strangely charmed by Ryou’s half dead, Caffeine high flirting at the Sunday Farmer’s Market that Ryou dragged them too because it had coffee as black as his soul and Kourubi wanted to test if the Farmer’s Market Hot theory was true. Turns out it was. But she wasn’t the one who ended up with a man. Genma ended up with Umeko after her pediatrician intervened and told her Crazy Vegan mother that no, babies cannot survive on almond milk. He may or may not basically end up as Ryou’s sugar daddy.

Noboru is their hipster, grad student RA who introduced them to the farmer’s market in the first place. Gai is his jock boyfriend who seems to spend more time at the gym than in class. Hangs out with Genma at the farmer’s market and is horrified at Ryou’s flirting and Genma’s acceptance of it.

Hinata is the pastel/soft loli who Kourubi ends up RA-ing with the rest of the Konoha twelve her sophomore year. She and Mai end up being the ultimate lesbian power couple on campus.

Silver Millennium AU

AKA: this is all @purple-possibilities fault

Set during the Silver Millennium of Sailor Moon lore, Sakumo is the younger brother of Queen Serenity, making Kakashi and Usagi/Serenity II cousins. Basically this is just an excuse for Moon Prince Kakashi. All the major clans of Konoha send their heirs to the moon along with the Sailor Senshi/Princesses because peace is brought through understanding or some bullshit. The Uchiha clan are from Mars, the Hyuuga from Pluto, the Karasuno from Jupiter’s moons, Uzumaki/Namikaze and Inuzuka from Earth, the Nara from Saturn, the Yamanaka from Venus, the Aburame from Mercury, and the Akimichi from Uranus. Kaguya Ootsutsuki is the matriarch of the Dark Moon Family, and is basically one of those bitchy, gossipy noble women that has far too much influence for her own good.

Fandom Bum Grapes ~ Headaches Courtesy of the Fandom ~ Part I

Subjected myself to a whole lot of fandom fail that only succeeded in making my headache worse. Thought I'd share some of the "highlights?" "Gems?" And my brief thoughts on it. It's hidden behind a cut because I do talk about some of the sexist language used, which might be upsetting for some. I did try and censor the worst with the Asterisk of Kindness.

That and the stupid hurts.

And I love you all too much.

WARNING: SEXIST NASTY LANGUAGE FROM "FANS," NOT MY WORDS. DON’T READ IF YOU FIND THAT KIND OF THING UPSETTING.

* Zoicite (Sailor Moon) being a "sl*tty girl" in the Dub, but a beautiful, perfect, flawless ANGEL OF A GAY BOY in the original. I understand that localisation changes are a right pain when they remove anything that isn't straight, when boys turn into girls in same sex relationships or they become cousins, but that's no reason to chew out female characters for being female. It's another one of those YAOI OBSESSED FANGIRL, EWW GIRLS ARE ICKY" situations. * "All vaginas are gross." Yes, that actually got said in a discussion about Fire Emblem. To justify yaoi ships. * Calling the Sailor Scouts in Sailor Moon "anti-feminist whores" because they fell in love with men. And using a whole list of other misogynist language against the female characters AND THE CREATOR OF SAILOR MOON BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T LIKE CRYSTAL. For shame. * Calling Severa (and pretty much every female character) from Fire Emblem Awakening every sexist name under the sun and being being unable to give legit reasons as to why you dislike her without using offensive language. Oh, but Yarne/M!Morgan OTP ♥♥♥ (Seriously, I thought we were passed this kind of thing.) * On the opposing side of the spectrum, the overly vocal shaming shippers of same sex pairings because it is "wrong" and - more importantly - "not canon." In the same sentence, someone decried Fire Emblem ships like Inigo/Gerome and Lissa/Maribelle while praising straight ships like Gerome/Lucina and Chrom/Sumia. Do I need to explain the fallacy here? (Big freaking hint: IT'S FIRE EMBLEM.) And you can ship anything you want as long as you are respectful about it. * Every time you use the "f*g" word casually, you will lose me. That's a promise. * Labelling any female character you don't like a Mary Sue when they're... not? They have flaws and issues to overcome, which kind of goes against being a Mary Sue? Girl smiles, BAM, Mary Sue. Like, being sweet, kind and nice are considered bad things. You sure it's not about something else? (I'm not talking about characters that are very much cookie cutter tropes that suffer from characterisation issues and are seldom fleshed out. I mean characters that DO have depth and stuff going on, but the haters fail to see it. Or ignore it completely.) * Bad problem in the Persona 4 fandom. Endorsing physical abuse because it's towards a guy is not cool. Even if said character is a bit problematic at times, that's still not a reason to say it's okay that they get beaten up. And may the Goddess have mercy on those special brands of fanbums that say Yosuke is WORSE THAN A SERIAL KILLER. No. * Fans of old school FFVII who insist you can't like the Compilation. Hello? It's possible to like both. I do. If you have your reasons for not quite liking Advent Children, Crisis Core and the like, that's cool, but don't act like you have to choose between the two and if you do by some miracle like all of it (even while understanding its flaws,) you are less of a fan. I played FFVII upon release. I've been around for a good few years (fandom oldie represent.) And if you act like Advent Children Cloud is "emo" and "out of character" because of how he behaved in the early stages of FVII? You... weren't paying attention. * On a similar note, fans who bash and hate and spew about a series or character... that makes no sense because the stuff they're ranting about either never happened or is blown out of proportion. Did you actually watch or play it, or are you jumping on the band wagon of other bashers? * Hating a character for getting in the way of your ship, wishing death and all manner of sexist slurs their way? Boo. * Really bad in the Persona 4 fandom, but can relate to many fandoms (Why are my favourite fandoms really rough places?) If you favour the canon to a particular character, cool. If you prefer your headcanon about the same character, also cool. When you declare your way to be the One True Way and bash others and try to shame them in comments, not cool. Be excellent to each other. I understand representation is an important thing, but bullying someone else for opting for the canon interpretation or their own personal idea makes the fandom suck as a whole. (Character in question: Naoto Shirogane, Persona 4. If you're in the fandom, you know why.) * Sugar coating and glossing over the bad stuff a character does, especially a villain. You can like a character while acknowledging and understanding their behaviour and the decisions they make. Woobifying the bad guy, victim shaming the ones they hurt and glorifying the bad things they do is not the way of being a fan. * Mirroring the last sentiment, someone who likes an antagonist or villain doesn't mean they accept what they do as a good thing. You can like a negative character and call them out on their bad guy ways.

Head hurting like the wow. I'm calling it quits, but I might make this a regular thing based on what I find.
