when Barzillai does his Speech during chapter 7 I got very excited in the same way that Flint Speeches make me excited. love it when a guy with mythologized baggage gets to do dramatic speechifying!!!! On A Ship!!!!

Beyond Ezra and Josué as characters, that speech of Barzillai’s is the ONLY thing that survived from the old gtw script haha!

There will be more speechifying from him, kind of, in the next chapter, on a little whaleboat.

From the Flight of the Heron fake married AU. Keith saves Ewen’s life by claiming they’re married under Scottish law (which allowed for informal marriage.) They are then forced to pretend to be married in the hopes that it will save Ewen from trial.

General Hawley pushed back his chair and rose, glass in hand. All the other officers followed, save for Ewen, who remained stubbornly in his chair.

“The King,” Hawley intoned, and Keith raised his glass and joined in the toast with his brother officers. As he lowered the glass he saw that Hawley’s eyes were fixed on Ewen.

“Mr Cameron,” said Hawley, “If you will not drink to the health of the King, perhaps you will stand to join us in another toast.”

“Sir, my husband has only recently recovered from surgery—” began Keith, but was silenced by a look from his commanding officer. With slow, painful movements, Ewen rose to his feet, his mouth pressed in a tight line as he stood unsteadily on his injured leg.

Hawley raised his glass. “To the newlyweds,” he said, looking directly at Keith and Ewen. “May God grant you all that you deserve.” They drank a toast.

“Will you not give us a kiss?” asked Mr Bruce, once they had sat down. Hawley gave a derisive snort, but said nothing. The rest of the table waited expectantly. “Go on,” said Bruce, and Keith turned to look at Ewen, whose face was as pale as his own. They could not afford to hesitate, not with the assembled company peering at them, and yet Keith could not move. No matter his admiration for Ardroy, no matter his concern for his wellbeing, he could not do it.

Ewen’s hand slipped into his. “Keith,” he said softly, his hand reaching up to stroke Keith’s cheek. “’Tis only a kiss.” And drawing Keith’s face towards his, he kissed him with utmost gentleness. It was nothing, a momentary brush of lips and no more, but it burned like a brand, and Keith hid his face, his cheeks burning, as the rest of the table laughed and clapped and toasted them once more.

“I am sure that you have found by now, Mr Cameron, that your husband is a soldier through and through,” said Mr Bruce. “Men like him are more capable on the battlefield than the bedchamber.”

“On the contrary, sir,” said Ewen amiably, “I have found him to be as nonpareil a lover as he is a fighter.”

Keith stared at his lap and wished for death.
