Lancia A 112 Abarth
As the first-generation Mini forged ahead with its early sales success, Italian carmaker Autobianchi must have been looking on with envious eyes. Its attempt to grab a slice of the pie was launched in 1969 as the A112, a three-door hatchback that used the same (back then) relatively unusual transverse engine/front-wheel drive layout in a marginally larger package.Bertone’s Marcello Gandini, the man behind the Lamborghini Miura, Countach and Diablo, was drafted in to do the design, which to contemporary eyes looks like a very agreeable mash-up between the Fiat 126 and the British Mini. Speaking of Fiat (which had bought the brand a year earlier), under the skin was a shortened 128 Platform, while power came from a 903cc inline-four taken from the 850.The Mini Cooper and Cooper S had proven years before the A112 that tiny cars have performance potential, and it didn’t take Autobianchi long to go down the same route with its creation. It turned to Fiat motorsport arm Abarth for the work, which involved dropping in a 982cc engine with a twin-choke carburettor and a ruder exhaust. In 1975 the capacity was bumped up to 1050cc, with the power climbing to about 70bhp. Doesn’t sound like much, be we are talking about a car that weighed less than 700kg. Continuing the Mini parallels further, the A112 turned out to make a pretty sweet rally car, leading to the creation of the one-make Campionato A112 Abarth series. A112 production lasted all the way up until 1986, by which time Autobianchi had made about 1.2 million of the things. Today, though, survivors are relatively scarce, even back in the A112’s native Italy. You’ve even less chance of finding on in the UK or USA where they weren’t ever sold officially, but there are a few kicking around in both countries.

UK ROCK BEST 100 ALBUMS - The 00's [CROSSBEAT (August 2006)]
Tumblr media
00's UK rock's current location, where a diverse range of personalities are in turmoil
In the early 2000s, UK rock music was in a state of chaos, with the unprecedented idol boom taking over the leading role in the music world, but the seeds for the next generation could be seen here and there.
Since the end of the 1990s, several eclectic blues/folk/electronica bands, described as "the British answer to Beck", have emerged, and a branch of this, the "New Acoustic", has been gaining local attention. The post-rock/neo-prog rock scene developed in tandem with the rise of Radiohead, while the "new acoustic" bands that branched off from it gained local attention. It was Coldplay who drove an important wedge in the direction of the scene there. The band's "orthodox" approach to music captured the hearts and minds of the public at a time when there was an unabated demand for lyrical rock and a thirst for new Radiohead releases that were confused by the electronica-driven sound of the band. They went on to conquer the USA.
However, it was the American bands such as The Strokes and The White Stripes, and the Scandinavian and Australian bands such as The Hives and The Vines that brought about a decisive turning point in a situation where pop, dance and mellow music still dominated. It was perhaps the UK that was most affected by this simultaneous worldwide garage rock revival. People hungry for aggressive guitar rock greeted the band with enthusiasm, and new British acts such as The Libertines and Razorlight soon responded. The UK rock counter-attack began in earnest.
This led to a rapid revival of guitar rock in the UK. In fact, studies showed that guitar sales had increased several times faster than at the end of the 1990s. The fact that Alex Turner, frontman of the now flying Arctic Monkeys, was inspired by Vines as his first live experience as a frontman is testimony to this virtuous cycle.
The rise of guitar music has resulted in a wide-ranging revitalisation that is not confined to one genre. In Liverpool, for example, a unique and individual scene was flourishing around the local Delta Sonic label, represented by the eclectic psychedelic The Coral, and the fusion of rock and groove (The Music, Kasabian, etc.) also established an area of its own. Muse, who at the time of their debut were treated as a Radiohead follower, established their own dramatic rock opera world. Then came Franz Ferdinand, who further dramatically rewrote the UK rock map. With their clever blend of sonic sharpness and pop danceability, the neo-New Wave/post-punk revival (Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, etc.) was in full bloom at once. This movement, which has been described as the second coming of Brit-pop, is not just a rehash of New Wave, but is also the culmination of 40 years of British rock music from the 1960s to the present (beat, glam, art rock, Madchester, etc.). -Sumi Imai
Tumblr media
Emperor Tomato Ketchup Stereolab (1996) A mid-period masterpiece that cleverly digested the experimental elements of later electronica into pop songs. Their taste and skill crystallised at their highest point. -Mima
OK Computer Radiohead (1997) Third album that catapulted Radiohead to the top of the world's top bands. Not the most accessible work, but perhaps it was the fact that it was somewhat esoteric that got so many people hooked. -Koguchi
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Spiritualized® (1997) Jason Pierce led an orchestra in building this cerebrally delusional soundscape. A dizzying druggy spectacle that connects New Orleans and space in a straight line. -Kuroda
Word Gets Around Stereophonics (1997) The first album by this burly rock trio from South Wales, including the singalong classic "A Thousand Trees", and Kelly Jones' narrative lyrics were also highly acclaimed. -Yamashita
Urban Hymns The Verve (1997) The Verve's 'Urban Hymns' turned the previously often under-performing group into a national band (and a success in the USA). Listen to Richard Ashcroft's soulful singing. -Koguchi
The Man Who Travis (1999) A major breakthrough (second) with Nigel Godrich as producer, bringing naïve songwriting to the fore. Don't forget they were there before Coldplay. -Koguchi
Community Music Asian Dub Foundation (2000) Second generation Asians living in the UK hit the scene with their one-of-a-kind groove, and also worked with Primal with their anti-establishment message. This album is a reflection of London as a racial melting pot. -Otani
Rock Action Mogwai (2001) This is their controversial work, which is a step forward from My Bloody Valentine-esque guitar experimentation. It's impressive that they feature breakbeats and vocals in a big way. -Kuroda
A Rush of Blood to the Head Coldplay (2002) The band have continued to enjoy such huge commercial success since their debut that it's almost a little depressing. This second album is another fine piece of work with well-crafted songs, and has exploded around the world. -Hirose
The Coral The Coral (2002) 1st album by Liverpool's young super-individuals. They showcased their nostalgia by mixing psychedelic, acid folk and even Mersey Beat. They had hits such as "Skeleton Key." -Yamashita
Up the Bracket The Libertines (2002) Undoubtedly one of the most important albums of 00's UK rock. The band's unstable, uncontrollable performances and poetic genius in their depiction of everyday life painfully redefined "punk". -Sawada
The Music The Music (2002) UK rock newcomer of 2002, with a no-questions-asked groove. The whole band seemed to be beating to a single beat, and their development was simply breathtaking. Being Japanophiles, they have already visited Japan seven times. -Otani
Absolution Muse (2003) An epic rock drama combining hard guitar sounds with beautiful classical elements. Excessive romanticism has transformed the post-90s values of 'cool'. -Mima
Phantom Power Super Furry Animals (2003) A masterpiece from the Welsh outfit that succeeded in making a sonic leap forward. By suppressing their anger and mixing it with humour, their serious message stands out even more strongly. -Kuroda
Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand (2004) This Glaswegian four-piece crossed disco with new wave and created a worldwide fever in 2004. They are the ones who started the current UK rock boom. -Koguchi
Kasabian Kasabian (2004) New working-class rock of the 00's. The 90's hooligan appearance of Oasis and Primal was successfully evolved with 00's dance grooves. -Sawada
Hopes and Fears Keane (2004) One of the bestsellers of 00's UK rock, which popularised the middle-class rock pioneered by Coldplay. In a sense, the ultimate form of "melody supremacy". -Sawada
A Grand Don't Come for Free The Streets (2004) The Streets' second album from the UK garage scene. The song depicted the reality of working-class youths and gained overwhelming support, becoming No.1. Excellent dance music without lyrics. -Yamashita
Silent Alarm Bloc Party (2005) A record that symbolised the era when the 00's rock groove became known to the world together with Franz. The jittery beats are appealing, but the melodies are also very melancholy. -Sawada
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not Arctic Monkeys (2006) Straightforward and straight to the point. A shocking debut album that opened up the possibilities of rock music with the most difficult sound to make it sound fresh these days. A brilliant crystallisation of pure initial impulse and passionate energy. -Otani
Translator's Note: And that's it for covering 50 years of UK rock music in 100 albums. Honestly, the reason why I scanned and even translated this while article was just because Chris Martin was in the picture. Would be nice to have Matt there instead, but I also like seeing a white man with curly blond hair and blue eyes. Hard to resist him ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'm in the same general region as you are, I think, and have been eating pretty frugally since I moved here last year. Here's my tips:
Get some good rice and a rice cooker if you don't have one, frozen vegetables are also a great value and most of the meat I buy is on "final sale" at like half price because it's close to its "use by" date.
Dried beans are extremely cheap but soaking and cooking them kind of sucks so I usually spend a little more on canned beans that are ready to use. I also eat a lot of canned fish in general.
Making pizzas from scratch is also extremely cheap if you buy a jar of yeast, a big bag of bread flour, a cheap can of plum tomatoes and whatever toppings you want.
Aldi is also extremely cheap and amazing but they aren't accessible to everyone.
yeh i've got a sturdy old rice cooker and keep a big bag of that mahatma rice on me at all times. would recommend to everyone; i don't know how i would live whatsoever without this + keeping canned black beans on hand at all time. i have never in my life bothered with dried beans but with the way things are going i might try doing things the harder way. luv canned fish. luv tinned fish. co-signed as hell, anyone who hasn't gotten on the packaged fishwave are missing out tremendously
no Aldi where i'm at but i live next to what would be widely agreed to be "The Most Impoverished Albertsons In Town" and i shop sales, have an account there with my phone number, use coupons, the whole 9 yards. would recommend this to everybody who isn't already doing it; if you're an adult who does your own shopping, stop driving blind (i feel like lack of forethought and observation leads to those viral "this is what $100 of groceries looks like in the USA pictures whre it's just, steak and imported fruit or whatever, because they fell for the scam of buying things at full price).
thank you for your thoughtful message; a lot of this stuff i figured out when i was 19 but i had the luxury of living with a very nice 35 year old at the time who basically taught me how to live, who taught me how to make pizzas at home (we used premade raw dough instead of making dough from scratch tho, still cheap) and gave me a rice cooker. everything you've said here is genuinely essential. its hard to figure these things out without being taught

Top 12 LGBT Horror Characters
9. Jake Wheeler (played by Zackary Arthur) from Chucky
TW: mentions of homophobia, bullying, child abuse, death, murder
Tumblr media
*spoilers for Chucky TV Series*
Moving on to another television series based on a popular horror franchise, we are now discussing “Chucky”, which premiered on Syfy and USA Network in 2021, created by Don Manicini, who originated the entire franchise.
After seven movies, the iconic foul-mouthed killer doll continues his path of bloodshed on the small screen, with his targets sighted on a new generation of kids to terrorize.
One of those kids is middle schooler Jake Wheeler.
Before Chucky came into his life, Jake was already living in a horror story.
After his mother died in a car accident, Jake’s father Lucas became alcoholic, he is bullied mercilessly at school over his sexuality, and his perfectionist cousin Junior wants nothing to do with him.
At home, Lucas’ anger is compounded by the jealousy he felt toward his twin brother Logan’s more successful life he shared with his own wife and son. Plus, he is also not very accepting of Jake’s sexuality once he came out to him. All of this brewing rage led to Lucas punching his young son in the face after a heated argument. 🥺
The only solace he had was building those bizarre, morbid sculptures in his bedroom. (A hobby that he apparently outgrew after season 1, cause it’s never mentioned again.)
Then, Jake crosses paths with the red-headed doll at a chance encounter at a garage sale. After discovering his supernatural secret, Jake becomes slowly influenced by Chucky through after sharing his problems with him. Chucky uses false empathy to sway Jake into believing that he cares about his personal issues and wants to help him out. Thus, Chucky proposes a solution to make Jake’s emotional pain go away: MURDER!
What makes this so fascinating is that we see our lead character contemplating on going through with murdering someone. There are scenes of Jake buying weapons, chasing after someone, and even willingly gives Chucky to his tormentor Lexi, knowing that she would get murdered. Even though he has a change of heart and chooses to stop this plan, part of me actually worried that Jake would’ve succeeded in giving in to Chucky’s psychopathic manipulations, becoming another Charles Lee Ray in the making. It is terrifying, yet heartbreaking to see how easy it is for a child from a broken home could be influenced to do horrific acts by a stranger.
Yet, the damage was already done. Jake’s actions have still led to many deaths around him, including classmates and family members.
Now, Jake has to take responsibility and make things right. Now, everyday him and his friends have to spend their teen years facing danger at every turn.
Evil therapists. Psychotic nuns. Sociopathic children.
And to top it off, Chucky can be anywhere…and ANYONE!!
I can’t tell you if Jake will survive Chucky once more, because season 3 hasn’t premiered yet by the time this post has been published.

Curtains Fall Lightly (Historical Noir)
Tumblr media
Chapter I
At a leading manufacturer of aircraft, especially military aircraft, in the Summer and Autumn of 1963, events unfolded as described.
Philip Morris was a dying man, having received a dire prognosis from his physician. A leading contact between the firm and United States government agencies, he attempted to teach the much younger George Blythe to replace him, briefing Blythe on a situation as grim as Morris's own.
"Young man, you must understand that this company is under attack from within. It's not the Soviets primarily, but a woman named Rosalind Kerr, ostensibly a consulting advisor. Even I don't know who she works for, but she uses blackmail of our board and our employees to advance her own position, and what she wants, as far as I can tell, is an escalation of warfare, in any and all parts of the world, to increase sales of our aircraft, receiving a generous percentage in her own accounts of the resulting profits and cash flow."
"The compromising data is seldom obtained by Mrs. Kerr personally, you understand," continued Morris, "But by her mousy little male secretary, Joseph Wheedle, aptly named if ever anyone was. I have never seen anyone so good at a show of false humility, and he gains trust, and thereby ruins lives."
"Why does he share this information with Mrs. Kerr?" asked Blythe.
"Ah, that's the key. I have rumor and conjecture. I believe that Wheedle, some fifty years old and unmarried, may have homosexual tendencies, taboo to many, even illegal, and that most likely Mrs. Kerr knows this and compels him to share in her goals, and to share his ill-gotten gains with her."
Morris added a hint that perhaps Blythe should uncover proof of Wheedle's secret life, to leverage against him, and continued to explain the company's sinister cabal.
"Now, as you can see, Kerr is a woman, and not a young one, and Wheedle is a small man of little physical prowess. When blackmail is not an option, they have a man, Michael Pocius, though I am one of the few who knows Michael's real name. Nearly everyone calls him 'Clawboy'. He was born elsewhere, but by age fourteen, was a student in America, and at that age, did something so gruesome to the Principal of his school that the papers would not describe it, but the nickname Clawboy has been with him since. Do you remember the Cleveland murders of the 1930's? The ones even Eliot Ness couldn't solve? No? Well, such is your youth. I have every reason to believe Pocius was the culprit, though he deflected blame on to some mental hospital patient. Six foot three and never gave man or woman a quick death, he is as dangerous as they come, and he works for Kerr, who pays him well, though he will still hurt most anyone for sport."
"Why isn't he arrested?"
"Because Wheedle has compromising information on policemen and judges too."
"Surely, not all of this company is part of Mrs. Kerr's plot?"
"No, just those three, as far as I know. In this wing you will find Ramon Germanos, as he is legally known. It may be a poor translation of his Spanish name- he's from Mexico- but that is beside the point. He is a bitter bureaucrat who obstructs everyone in his path. His father died in a riot, I hear, and he hates the system for failing him."
"If he hates the system, isn't this company the essence of, well, the system?"
"Exactly, and from this very vantage point he can make life miserable for the people he quietly and, technically, law-abidingly hates, which is all of us."
"A job much like mine is done by the less experienced Leonard Collins. He is loyal, but much too impulsive for such secretive work, I believe. The one other person you'll need to know of is someone I know only as Three Eyes- never knew his real name. He's from India, I think, and every now and then you'll have to meet him at a planned location so he can give you the latest on Soviet aircraft, giving us, and the USA, a great advantage. Three Eyes is a spy, though I don't know who he works for- some say Britain, but I'm unsure, and now, if you'll excuse me, I am rather tired, so I'm going to rest in my office."
Tumblr media
Chapter II
Morris had not considered Ramon Germanos's wife, Jayne (maiden name unknown), important enough to mention, and this is understandable. As far as the world knew, she was a bleach blonde imitation of Marilyn Monroe, but without the talent. Relying on Ramon's money, she had a résumé of only a few unprofitable films of the lowest quality, such as "Snake Women of Acapulco"… or so she wished the world to believe.
Morris also failed to mention Trenchcoat, often just called Trench. His existence was considered something of a legend. From the aeronautics firm up to governments around the world, many had heard the legend of Trenchcoat, but most disbelieved in it. The stories went that he was supposed to live in an abandoned building somewhere near this airplane manufacturer, and though some CIA agents initially took the stories seriously enough to search abandoned buildings around the city, no trace of this semi-mythical being was found.
No one had ever seen Trench's face, though some claimed to have heard his voice, either by telephone, or in person, in his pitch black lair, they said, though these supposed witnesses were often less than credible. No one knew Trench's agenda or loyalties, or if he even existed, at least not until Mrs. Kerr's schemes brought matters to a head.
Finally, in my attempts to keep the stranger than fiction nature of this report comprehensive, there is Linda Aeons (real name unknown), the only person in America who could openly assert being a Soviet agent and remain at liberty, because no one believed her. Supposedly a Romanian immigrant, she would hang around important government and corporate buildings, point her fingers like a hypnotist, believing that she was hexing passersby, mainly the employees, go into strange dances, have conversations with spirits (or so she claimed)… aside from several stays in mental hospitals, which generally found her to be harmless, as she never became violent, no institution took Linda seriously.
Having apprised the reader of those involved, the reader can now understand what transpired that fateful year. (Excuse the poetic touch, dear reader.)
Tumblr media
Chapter III
George Blythe quickly became acquainted with the ways of Ramon Germanos. Blythe filed a report comparing American and Soviet aircraft, only to have Germanos interfere and claim it was "written unprofessionally". When Blythe asked how he should change it, Germanos replied, "You are supposed to be a professional. You should know." Thus, a report he could have finished in two days took four rewrites and three weeks to meet with Germanos's grudging approval.
Blythe once sneaked into Germanos's office, and found a treatise on anarchism. Confronting Germanos with it, Ramon explained it away as "understanding subversives- to defeat them, we must understand them." With what Morris had told him, however, Blythe doubted this explanation.
This soon became moot, however, as Germanos overplayed his hand attempting such obstructive tactics against Rosalind Kerr. Soon after this, photographs of a most graphic nature, proving what many already knew, became widely available within the firm, and to law enforcement, and to anyone else who wanted the information that they contained.
Ramon Germanos had married Jayne to keep up appearances, but much preferred men. His face was very recognizable in the photographs, but the other man's face could not be seen. Philip Morris, however, though by now like a walking cadaver, and straining to speak, insisted that the other man was Joseph Wheedle, and told Blythe that, to undermine Mrs. Kerr's schemes, Blythe needed to prove this.
"How could I prove it? We can't see his face."
"W-we [here a coughing fit interrupted Morris's speech]… we can see a scar on his ribs, near his left elbow… here. Prove Wheedle has this."
Blythe could think of only two ways of proving this: One would be to find some reason to have Wheedle throughly searched, but no such reason could be found. The other was far more distasteful to the very heterosexual, as some might later say, George Blythe, but he went through with it.
Not an unattractive young man from Wheedle's point of view, Blythe saw enough of Wheedle one night to be certain that yes, Joseph was the other man in the photo.
In the meanwhile, however, Ramon Germanos had done in himself, and Blythe, himself more than a little shaken over how he had to obtain the information on Wheedle, went off drinking at various bars during work hours, rather against regulations, and at one such bar, met with, it seemed, a grieving Jayne, but it was there and then that we would find that the sad-eyed blonde was a myth, and a cold heart and head lived beneath that façade.
Tumblr media
Chapter IV
A less than sober Blythe had mentioned to Leonard Collins his encounter with Wheedle, and Collins thought that he might try the same, but with the more drastic aim of ending Wheedle's life, hoping this would put an end to Mrs. Kerr's hold over the corporation. Ransacking Wheedle's place to make it look like a robbery, Collins reported to an abandoned building, an old warehouse, devoid of any lighting, proudly boasting of what he had done.
"I did it Trench. Got that little scoundrel once and for all, and even if Mrs. Kerr has his info, she'll be too scared now to act."
An eerie, quavering voice replied out of the darkness, none too pleased.
"You foolish whelp. Kerr has ten times the physical courage of Wheedle. You should have killed her to frighten him. Employing you was my biggest mistake. This is an easier death than Clawboy would give you."
A dim shadow in the room's darkness flung a knife at Collins, hitting his target, and Collins was never found.
Chapter V
At the bar, Jayne, red eyes and running makeup, seemed to be the most pitiable sight Blythe had ever seen, until his vision began to blur, and over he fell, dead. Jayne looked confused and frightened. The bartender assumed that George had just been drinking too much, and would soon recover.
Jayne kept up her dumb blonde act for about three blocks, then her face set to stone, and she got in a car with an up-to-date telephone, calling the man Collins would refer to as Trench.
"Blythe was drinking on the job. I made the drink his last."
"You always were one for drastic action, but I suppose weak wills have no place in our line," replied the same strange, quavering voice, though distorted a bit by the phone.
"Say, Trench, aren't you concerned someone might bug our phones?"
"No, because the man they send to do that had a car accident, Jayne. They don't make brake lines so reliably in those foreign makes."
Needless to say, even when coroners found the poison, no one suspected the grieving, not overbright widow, as they reckoned her, but authorities were out looking for someone who fit their idea of a dangerous spy or criminal.
"One more thing before you hang up, Jayne: You must act against Mrs. Kerr now. Wheedle swore revenge if anyone got him, and something terrible is coming. Kerr would take full advantage of it. No time to explain. Take care of her. You know how."

Chapter VI
Jayne, seemingly an intoxicated mess, sobbing for "Ramon", went to Kerr's home, as if to seek a maternal figure. Kerr disdained the girl utterly, considering her, as she had once said to Wheedle, "a waste of hair dye", but did not want Jayne to make a scene outside her home, a home always watched by agents of more than one country.
Inviting Jayne, who acted as if she could barely stand, into her home, Mrs. Kerr sent Carlos, her servant, to get coffee for Jayne. By the time Carlos returned, Jayne had already dispatched with Mrs. Kerr, using Dim Mak, I am told. As an unfortunate witness, a petrified Carlos discovered that Jayne, like Trench, was an adept thrower of knives.
Rosalind Kerr being gone, Clawboy had no loyalties, but would continue to be the most physically dangerous criminal on the streets, for profit and sport, beginning with an armored car robbery in early November, 1963, an incident that left two guards dead.
What Trench said about Joseph Wheedle's threats was, according to the best sources, true. He had threatened more than once that if anything happened to him, he had a "Communist cell" that would "remove" the most important man on Wheedle's long list of compromised individuals, and the "cell" did so, on November 22, 1963.
Chapter VII
By the end of November, several more robberies and deaths, some too terrible to describe, marked wherever Clawboy had traveled, hitting several cities so that a pattern would not, by most, be noticed.
Some took notice, however, including Jayne. She was back on the car phone.
"I know Clawboy has no agenda anymore, but in a way, he is off his leash. Enough more of this, especially if he did too much in one city, and it would worsen the crisis in public trust that is already inevitable, after what happened to the President, and given what the new President is."
"You are correct, Jayne," said the by now familiar, quavering voice, "And I intend to act."
"You know better than anyone where he is, Trench. Just tell me and I'll do it."
"Jayne, have you ever read of Clawboy's idea of amusement back in Cleveland? You are a deadly woman, but if you and Clawboy ever met, you would go that way. I must insist. The only person alive better at violence than Clawboy is me, and I must do this one personally."
Tumblr media
Chapter VIII
A limping, elderly hobo hobbled down a rural road not far from Baltimore. A blue Bel Air drove up behind him, driven by a grinning Michael Pocius, who thought he would play some games with the old man.
Clawboy drove the car directly at the hobo. There were no witnesses in sight, so it was just the two of them. The old man managed to throw himself to one side, but could not return to his feet. Pocius parked his car on a dime, and got out, strutting triumpantly and chuckling, pulling out a knife in his gloved hands, one with a finely carved handle.
The transient seemed resigned to his fate, smoking one last cigarette, as Clawboy, like Trench and Jayne, was about to practice his knife throwing skills, but suddenly, Pocius fell over, and was obviously no longer living when he hit the ground.
The "cigarette" had been a blowgun, and one assumes, the "elderly hobo" was an elaborate disguise of Trenchcoat.
Philip Morris passed away in 1964, and last I heard, Three Eyes and Linda Aeons had joined a commune in the vicinity of San Francisco, California.
Sincerely,
Trenchcoat

Corona Beer Case
The Scenario: Heineken's main vulnerabilities are its declining sales in the late 1980s and early 1990s, driven in part by the strengthening Dutch guilder vs. the US dollar. Heineken's attempts to change its advertising strategy through agencies like Lintas and Warwick were unsuccessful in reversing this trend. Additionally, the leadership at Heineken, even after executing various measures, was not able to turn around the company making it quite vulnerable. In contrast, Corona's "Fun, Sun and Beach" themed advertising, overseen by Modelo's Procermex subsidiary, helped propel it to the #2 imported beer in the US by 1996, cutting significantly into Heineken's lead. However, Corona still aims to be #1 in the category.
The Branding: In consumers' minds, Heineken appears to represent a more sophisticated, premium European import, whereas Corona embodies a fun, relaxed, unpretentious beach lifestyle. Corona's ritual of serving the beer with a lime appeals to younger drinkers. Its advertising, stressing the "fun" nature of the beer rather than the brand's prestige, differs markedly from Heineken's historically product-focused campaigns touting the beer's quality and number one status. These differing brand positions, shaped heavily by the companies' advertising campaigns, have allowed Corona to attract a new generation of import beer drinkers and seriously challenge Heineken's long-held leadership position in the U.S. import segment. However, one notable similarity is that both Corona and Heineken primarily (or exclusively for Modelo) imported from their home country and had storied histories. Each beer company held onto their heritage in their advertising campaigns, though that heritage was wildly different.
The Strategy: To protect its market position, Heineken could focus on more effective, regionally targeted marketing as suggested in the case by CEO Michael Foley, and strive for more consistency in its brand messaging. Additionally, Heineken would need to find a way to make its European-leaning messaging relate to the changing demographics in the USA. For instance, as noted in the case, the Hispanic population had grown tremendously by over 30% from 1990 to 1997, and its buying power grew nearly 65% during that same period. How did Heineken appeal to them? With an extensive budget of $15.1M, compared to Modelo’s $5.1M, it was a question of how to use the money compared to how much. For Corona to further increase its share, it should double-down on its brand promise of a fun, relaxed beach lifestyle experience but also eat away from Heineken’s customer base. It can do this through consistent, evocative advertising and experiential marketing initiatives that would help associate Corona with an aspirational lifestyle. Also, as discussed towards the end of the first class for B&D, Corona should be mindful of the brand life cycle challenges that come with success. As a brand grows and gains popularity, it risks losing some of its distinctive identity and badge value. To counter this, Corona could employ a brand discipline strategy, making small but impactful changes to keep the brand fresh and relevant while staying true to its core promise. Limited edition packaging, strategic partnerships, and targeted line extensions could help in this regard.
