Various Artists — Stop MVP: Artists from WV, VA and NC Against the Mountain Valley Pipeline (War Hen)

The Mountain Valley Pipeline, if it’s ever finished, will stretch over more than 300 miles in rural Wester Virginia and Virginia, crossing environmentally sensitive parts of the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains carrying dangerous, polluting loads of fracked gas. The League of Conservation Votes estimates that the pipeline will generate more than 89 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution annually, about as much as 24 average U.S. coal plans or 19 million passenger cars. Building it will require razing forests that have been sequestering carbon for centuries.

It’s a climate catastrophe, and because it runs through an area that is rich in musical history and culture, it has become a focus for artists and activists, including Daniel Bachman, who organized this 40-track compilation in protest of the pipeline. All proceeds from STOP MVP will go to the Appalachian Legal Defense Fund to support protesters resisting the pipeline’s construction.

That is, of course, one compelling reason to buy this set of music, but it is very far from the only one. The music here is exceptionally diverse and almost uniformly excellent. If you look at the cover and envision a steady stream of earnest folk songs, punctuated by some fingerpicking, think again. Certainly that’s represented on these two discs, but so is noise and rock and punk and hip hop and even, at the end, a stirring piece of gospel that will steel you for the cause.

There’s so much music here that it’s hard to get a grip on it all, but let’s hit some highlights. Magic Tuber String Band’s haunted, haunting rendition of “Undone in Sorrow” is both staunchly traditional and absolutely modern in its lament for a natural world gone haywire. Isak Howell, similarly, finds something potent and bracing in minor key picking. Solar Hex straddles baroque classical cello and folk lament, and there are indeed four crows cawing in the background to “Stone Wall with Four Crows.” My favorite discovery in this lengthy, skewed-folk all-star line-up comes from Høly Riot’s “Spirit Riot,” which kicks up a feeling-the-lord-speaking-in-tongues ruckus with its driving, droning ecstasies.

Some of the cuts are literally about the MVP pipeline, like Joshua Vana and Bernadette “BJ” Lark’s full-throated, heart-swelling “To the River,” while others reference the area’s long history of industrial subjugation. “The Dolly Womack Wreck” retells the story of an old-time train wreck, where the engineer was flayed alive by steam from a broken boiler. “The Coal Tattoo,” sung by Bachman’s father, is about his father’s death in a mine explosion. The hip hop/electronic “John Brown” by Appalachian rapper Prolo chronicles generations of poverty and racism in the region.

A lot of well known folk and indie artists have chipped in. There are tracks from Sally Anne Morgan, Ned Oldham, Nathan Bowles, Rosali Middleton (as Edsel Axle). Yasmin Williams and Bachman himself. But the real tribute to Bachman’s taste, restless song-hunting and open-minded-ness comes from the bands you might not be familiar with, the eerie soundscapes of Tallulah Cloos, the beefy country rock of Tucker Riggleman and the Cheap Dates, the unhinged noise of Dog Scream. The mountains and valleys threatened by MVP are rich in plant and animal diversity, but also musical breadth, and this compilation brings them all together for a worthy cause.

Chapter - 12

(Percy's POV)

The next morning, Chiron moved me to cabin three. I didn’t have to share with anybody. I had space for my stuff: the Minotaur’s horn, one set of spare clothes, & a toiletry bag.

I sat at my own dinner table, picked my own activities, called lights out when I wanted, & not listen to anyone. I was utterly miserable. I had started to feel accepted, like I had a home in cabin eleven & may be a normal kid - I was separated as if I had a rare disease.

Nobody mentioned the hellhound, but I knew they were all talking about it behind my back. The attack scared everyone. It sent two messages: one, that I was a son of the Sea God; & two, monsters would stop at nothing to kill me. The other campers stayed clear of me. Cabin eleven was too nervous to for sword classes with me after what I did to the Ares folks in the woods, so I asked Nora for sword lessons. Honestly she was better than Luke was at teaching me.

Nora still taught me Greek in the mornings. She was the only person by my side when no one else was. I was grateful to her for that.

Clarisse kept her distance too, even though her venomous looks made it clear she wanted to kill me for breaking her magic spear. I wished she would just yell or punch me or something. I’d rather fight than be ignored.

I knew somebody at camp resented me, because one night I came to my cabin and found a newspaper dropped in the doorway, a copy of the New York Daily News. The article took me time to read so I gave up & went to Nora's cabin asking her to read it for me.

"BOY AND MOTHER STILL MISSING AFTER FREAK CAR ACCIDENT-BY EILEEN SMYTHE

Sally Jackson & son Percy are still missing a week after their disappearance. The family’s badly burned ‘78 Camaro was discovered last Saturday on a north Long Island road with the roof ripped off & the front axle broken. The car had flipped and skidded for a few hundred feet before exploding. Mother & son had gone for a weekend vacation to Montauk, but had left, under mysterious circumstances. There's no sign of the missing Jacksons. Residents in the area reported seeing nothing at the time of the accident. Ms. Jackson’s husband, Gabe Ugliano, says, Percy Jackson, is troubled-" she stopped.

"Okay, enough of this crap!" She tossed it aside, then sat cross-legged on her bed. I went & laid my head on her lap. We talked until eventually I fell asleep while she ran her fingers through my hair. That night, I had a horrible dream.

I was running along a beach in a storm. There was a city behind me. It was different: buildings were spread farther apart, palm trees & low hills in the distance. About hundred yards down the surf, two men were fighting.

They looked like wrestlers, muscular, with beards & long hair. Both wore flowing Greek tunics, one trimmed in blue, the other in green.

They grappled with each other, wrestled & kicked, & every time they did, lightning flashed, the sky grew dark, & the wind rose. I had to stop them. The wind blew me back, untill I was running in place.

Over the roar of the storm, I could hear the blue-robed one yelling at the green-robed one, Give it back! Give it back! Like a child fighting over a toy. The waves got bigger & crashed into the beach, spraying me with salt.

I yelled, Stop it! Stop fighting!

The ground shook. Evil laughter came from below the earth, it turned my blood to ice. Come down, little hero, the voice crooned.

The sand split beneath me, opening up a crevice. My feet slipped, & darkness consumed me. I woke up, sure I was falling.

My head was still on Nora's lap & she was asleep. She looked beautiful, when she slept too. I stroked a gentle hand across her cheek. Then I heard clopping at the door, a knock on the door. Nora woke up with a start.

"Come in, Grover." she said. How'd she know it was him? He trots inside, worried. "You're both here. Mr. D wants to see you guys."

"Why?" I asked.

"He wants to kill….I mean, I’d better let him tell you."

I’d been expecting a summons to the Big House. Since I was Poseidon's son, I felt it was a crime for me to be alive. But I didn't understand why he wanted Nora to come.

We left the cabin & headed to the big house.

The sky looked like ink soup. A hazy curtain of rain was coming our way.

At the volleyball pit, the kids from Apollo’s cabin were playing a game against satyrs. Dionysus’s twins were walking around in the strawberry fields, making plants grow.

Everybody was doing their normal business, but they looked tense. They kept their eyes on the storm.

Grover, Nora & I walked to the Big House. Dionysus sat at the pinochle table in his tiger striped Hawaiian shirt & Diet Coke, just as he had on my first day. Chiron sat across the table in his fake wheelchair. They were playing against invisible opponents.

"Well, well," he said without looking up. "Our little celebrity." I waited.

"Come closer." Mr. D said. "Don’t expect me to knowtow to you, just because old Barnacle-Beard is your father." Lightning flashed across the sky. Thunder shook the windows.

"Blah, blah, blah," Dionysus said. "You don't have to worry Nora, you're my little sister. Come sit with me." Nora smiled. Little sister?

"If I could, I'd cause your molecules to erupt in flames, we’d sweep the ashes & be done with the trouble. But Chiron says it's against my mission at this cursed camp: keeping you little brats safe from harm." Mr.D said.

"Spontaneous combustion is a form of harm, Mr. D." Chiron put in.

"Nonsense," Dionysus said. "Boy wouldn’t feel a thing. But I agreed to restrain myself. I’m think I'll turn you into a dolphin instead & send you back to your father."

"Mr. D, please." Nora said. His gaze softened when he looked at her.

"Oh, all right," Dionysus relented. "There’s another option. But it’s deadly foolishness."

He rose, the invisible cards drop to the table.

"I’m off to Olympus for an emergency meeting. If the boy's still here when I'm back, I’ll turn him to an Atlantic bottlenose. Do you understand? And Perseus Jackson, if you’re smart, you’ll see the more sensible choice than what Chiron feels."

Dionysus picked a playing card, twisted it, & it became a plastic card. A security pass. He snapped his fingers & became a hologram, then the wind, then he was gone, leaving the smell of fresh-pressed grapes behind.

Chiron smiled, but it looked tired & strained.

"Sit, Percy, please & Grover." We did.

Characters:

×Crazy-Jess (Jestro) is a criminal from the Wild West who terrorizes civilians. He has his own gang of robbers. He takes revenge on his offenders and just those who looked askance at him. Infinitely challenges everyone to a duel. Hot-tempered, aggressive goose.

×Monstrox is the leader of the bandits. Almost all gangs operate under his command, except for Jestro, because he is a psycho and does not obey anyone. He wants to create a network for the smuggling of weapons and drugs.

×Jorah Tightwad is an important figure in the whole region. His only passion is money and he does everything to get as much of it as possible. He secretly teamed up with Monstrox and now helps him in any way he can: with money, and information, and everything that is needed. But either way, they don't get along very well.

×Clay Moorington is the sheriff of one of the most frequently attacked cities. He is faithful to his cause and duty, knows the laws perfectly and hates duels and these stupid arguments with the “weak”. Serious and calm, like a stone, but if you make him angry, then expect trouble.

×Macy Halbert is the daughter of Iggrid Halbert, the mayor of the same city. He attends etiquette classes, but skips them from time to time due to street contests and entertainment. He wants to help catch the robbers, but his father is vehemently opposed.

×Merlock is Clay's uncle, Yggrid Halbert's assistant. He loves teaching his nephew and telling stories from the past. Sometimes he can give good advice, and sometimes he just carries complete nonsense, because of which you want to shoot yourself.

×Aaron Fox is a local daredevil who causes a lot of trouble for Clay, who has to talk him out of some antics that look more like a suicide attempt. A hyperactive red-haired eccentric - that's what he was nicknamed in the district.

×Lance Richmond is a rich turkey who is the envy of every dog ​​for his money. Jestro has already tried seven times to rob him, but so far it has not worked. Lance loves music and can play the cello, violin and mandolin. He wants to quickly dump in the most metropolitan capital of the country, away from the robbers and this shitty sand with cacti and thorns.

×Axl is the owner of the local tavern. He constantly has to breed drunken visitors or homeless people in the backyard. Clay has already offered him a couple of times to become his assistant, right hand and help separate the local drunkards, but Axel already has enough problems with his head, so he refuses over and over again. He is an excellent cook.

×Rachel Rayson (why not?) is a gypsy who steals everything that glitters. Twice she snuck into the Richmond mansion and was caught robbing twice, after which she was locked up in jail for 15 days. She works for Jestro solely so that there is someone to get her out of prison.

×Eric is a guy who came from the city to his aunt in this provincial town. For some reason, he always wanted to become part of some organization, but nothing came of it. It turned out and so he joined Jestro, thinking that this was some kind of gang of local idiots who wanted all this for nothing, and soon regretted it, tired of dealing with Clay and Yggrid, in order to deny himself first of all. And a little about his aunt - I haven't thought of a name yet, but it will be Sallis (Sal). She is the owner of the inn, which houses a sewing workshop. She signed a contract with Axel for a discount for my clients. Came here in my old age from a large part of the country. She used to be a famous shooter, but due to an injury and poor eyesight (they apparently have poor eyesight), she moved to a quiet place. Completely disapproves of his nephew's actions. I almost forgot, she is an old friend of Marlock (according to the orig canon of the Persians, she was allegedly his student)

While most of this issue is of the good guys avoiding bullets from other good guys, the comic really goes with the concept and shows us that they really don’t like their current situation. The comic utilizes its drama for all its worth and Edwin Huang’s somewhat stilted expressions don’t take away any of the tension. Even Bunnie has her own unique predicament, though sadly we don’t get to see any more of that.

Did you know the rest of the bands girlfriends wanted to be in the SCOM video (as it was originally only going to be just Erin). They whined that they also wanted to be featured in the video.

Imagine being the girlfriend to Slash, Duff, Izzy or Steven and you hear the next video they’re doing features the lead singers girlfriend (as the song is about her). You then you’re like “I’d love to be in that video too.”

Erin Everly (Axls girlfriend), Sally McLaughlin (Slashs then girlfriend), Mandy Brixx (Duffs then girlfriend), Angela Nicoletti (Izzys then girlfriend) and Cheryl Swiderski (Adler’s then girlfriend). The directors dog makes an appearance too (it’s not Izzy’s dog).

If I recall correctly I was having trouble finding reference for bottom of Axl’s boots and a quick appeal to the people on Twitter saved the day!

And I’ve pointed this out before but i didn’t know Proto Man was supposed to be wearing a face covering so this is my original drawing. I’m pretty sure the printed version has somebody else’s weird drawing pasted over him.
