Happy 18th Egg Day, @kiernanshipka - it was a delight to watch #SallyDraper grow up. Thanks for the some of the best moments in TV history! (at Ossining, New York)
MADMEN!
MUCH to say!! I might have other personal favorites, but in my opinion this is The X-Files’ best episode. it’s about how destructive obsession can be (Clyde Bruckman’s obsession gave him his ability; Mulder’s obsession with that ability makes it hard for Mulder to see Clyde as a person) and how the answers you seek will never be satisfying anyway. (interesting that The X-Files is obsessed with death as the ultimate unknowable answer.) but the very sweet thing about this story is that what ultimately matters is connecting with other people, like Scully does with Clyde. so Darin Morgan is out here dragging Mulder, firing off some absurd humor, getting deeply philosophical, finding hope in a seemingly depressing idea, and summing up the humanism of the entire series. and probably being self-deprecating about it.
but as much as this is The X-Files’ best script, I also think Clyde Bruckman would not work without Peter Boyle. “it’s ugly” and “the KILLAH!” are the funniest line deliveries. and “how do I die?” “you don’t” gets me every time. I love how human he is. also the way he says lollapalooza
1. Three actually that I think everyone should read.
Jane Eyre. It’s the first female bildungsroman.
The Book of Lost Things- a celebration of stories and just a healthy dollop of some scary magical fairytales.
Everything is Illumninated- I’ll admit Foer is a bit.......new agey with some of the way he structures his book, but the characters! OH I CRIED.
44. Favorite book quote: OH GOD SO MANY. I used to have a list. Truly this is impossible but I’ve always loved how devastatingly romantic this line is. It knows it’s cheesy and goes with it.
“If there is no love in the world, we will make a new world, and we will give it walls, and we will furnish it with soft, red interiors, from the inside out, and give it a knocker that resonates like a diamond falling to a jeweller's felt so that we should never hear it. Love me, because love doesn't exist, and I have tried everything that does.” Everything is Illuminated
“Stories come alive in the telling. Without a human voice to read them aloud, or a pair of wide eyes following them by flashlight beneath a blanket, they had no existence in our world. They were like seeds in the beak of a bird, waiting to fall to earth. Or the notes of a song laid out on a sheet, yearning for an instrument to bring their music into being. They lay dormant, hoping for the chance to emerge. Once someone started to read them, they could begin to change. They could take root in the imagination and transform the reader. Stories wanted to be read. They needed it. It was the reason they forced themselves from their world into ours. They wanted us to give them life.” The Book of Lost Things
49. Worst Book I ever Read: BRO I READ THE FUCKING FOUNTAIN HEAD.
