I kind of miss getting to know the interior of other people’s homes. So many of my friendships in adulthood are distant, or long distance/only talking over the phone, difficult to make actual plans with because of Real Life Schedules Now, etc. etc., but like in school and stuff as a kid you can just hang out at someone’s house for a few days, have a sleepover every weekend, etc. etc. I still remember the interior of all of my childhood friend’s homes, I remember all the details to the rooms and the layout of the yards and etc. etc. There’s just something kind of neat about Knowing another person’s housing space, what the décor says about them, the history of how they came to live there and their household routines and what it’s like, etc. I feel like it can be an important part of really deeply understanding someone so it’s weird to talk to and vaguely know a handful of people, but also not even know what their bedrooms look like or how they organize the dishes after washing them or etc. etc.

Humans are Weird, “A Preoccupation with Death.”

Humanity’s preoccupation with death has always fascinated me: I say fascinated because to say that it disturbs me would be rather unscientific, and I have been attempting to reign in my anger… I have had some… complaints over the last year about the unprofessionalism of my previous papers. The GA community does not appreciate, and I quote, “Excessive swearing, and screaming” in virtual reports, so today I will attempt to be calm and relaxed as I explain to you, common human traditions based around death.

Now you must understand, from my perspective these practices are quite bizarre. Vrull have no rituals associated with death. The Vrull are disposed of and their bodies are incinerated. The ash is then disposed with by mixing into the soil to produce needed plants on the planet surface. There are no other options, and no other arrangements are made.

However, I am told that funeral rights with humans are, often, more to do with what the living need than what the deceased do. However, there are some funeral rights believed to be required in certain human cultures, so that rule does not always hold completely true.

I will begin from the moment of death.

Unlike the Vrull humans do not know their exact time of death. Granted this is not because the Vrull have a set clocking system in their bodies which sets the time in which we die, but because our society sets forth a time of our usefulness. No one knows how long a Vrull can feasibly live because no one has tried it before. I myself might plan on finding out, as I have no intention of returning for my scheduled termination, which is already a year overdue.

Humans, like most other species die in several different ways, accidents, sickness, or the sudden failure of the body due to old age, the final one generally happening peacefully and in their sleep.

However this is where humans tend to diverge from their inhuman counterparts, in that they are very social creatures, the death of a human is usually witnessed by multiple family members and friends, in the case of sickness, and is mourned many weeks after because the death of someone in your social circle changes that circle forever. Social bonds are cut and entire social lives are upended. Humans bond so heavily with each other that the loss of one of their own can lead to mental and emotional trauma extreme enough to require medication and hospitalization.

Humans plan their deaths months to years in advance. In certain instances, their jobs force them to plan their death in advance in case something were to happen. Decisions need to be made about who owns their property, where it goes, what happens to their dwellings, and how the surviving members of their family will be supported. Sometimes they plan this due to terminal illness which they knew will lead to their deaths, otherwise they might just do it out of precaution.

There are many different ways of disposing of a corpse. First of all, you must determine if any of the human parts are recyclable: this being the very morbid idea of taking someone else’s organs and giving them to another person. Now with the advancement of this technology, organ transplants from donors is not as common as it once was seeing as they can now 3D print organs. However, this method is not time effective and is very costly, in some cases leaving the harvesting of deceased human organs to be the only viable option.

Yes, they take organs from dead people… the doctor and surgeon in me admires that thought process, but the thinking breathing creature inside of me recoils heavily at the idea.

Assuming that no one requires your organs, or if you have especially requested for your organ not to be used  than there are other questions that need to be addressed. There are humans who have jobs especially in the business of taking care of dead bodies. They are generally moved in special containers and placed in refrigerated units to slow decomposition while the relatives determine what they want to do with the body.

In certain cases, where the death is suspicious, as related to murder, there are, in fact, humans who specilize in determining the cause and time of death based on the decomposition rate of a body and the stiffness of the flesh itself. This is a semi-common practice across the galaxy, and I myself have performed one or two autopsies since my professional career began though they are far more common for humans.

I find that the most humane method of human enterrement, and the one that makes most sense to me as a Vrull is the idea of cremation. The body is taken and placed in a furnace that is then heated enough to turn the body to ash leaving only bone fragments and the occasional mineral deposit. The ash may then be given to the family members or disposed of accordingly. Some humans find it comforting to keep the remains in some sort of container.... A fact which I find morbid but, we have proven in abundance that I find much of what humanity does, rather morbid.

It is only going to get worse.

The other method of disposal, popular through human history, however made someone obscure in recent centuries due to the proliferation of human burial sites…. The common north american and European Burial and funeral rights went as follows. After death, and freezing in the morgue, a special human with the job of mortician is called in to prepared the body for burial…. This is where it gets very morbid.

The body is drained of all of its fluids and then pumped full of preservatives to slow down the process of decomposition. The faces are then painted with makeup to give the corpse the appearance of sleep rather than death. The body is dressed in fine clothing and placed inside a coffin or casket: these in themselves can cost thousands of dollars as the family members decide what materials the box should be made out of and lined with, precious metals, woods like oak or steel, and the inside lined in velvet satin or silk. The body is placed inside with the person dressed in a finely tailored suit before a hearse: a special vehicle designed to carry caskets is brought to the place of mourning, generally a curch or a funeral home.

Many times the body is then put through a “viewing”.... It sounds just as bad as I make it seem, when the humans come in…. In large groups…. To stare at their dead relative. Just…. Stare at their rotting corpse before it is hauled away and lowered into an six foot hole in the earth. A decorative rock is then place on top of that inscribed with the deceased’s name so that everyone knows where to find their moldering corpse….

I am told this provides a lot of closure for family members, though I have yet to understand why staring at a painted corpse would be helpful.’

Unfortunately, with humans, this isn't the most gruesome method they have of corpse disposal, nor the most involved 

You may also chose to donate your body to science…

They might hand your bod over to a medical school, where aspiring doctors will, in groups, dissect your corpse slowly over an intervening few weeks or months. It is… gruesome, but a necessary part of the learning process. Your skeleton might even be recycled for use as a tool to demonstrate the skeletal structure to those very same students.

Perhaps your body will end up in a museum, where they will encase your nervous system in plaster and place it on a wall for school children and visiting day travelers to view.

Perhaps you might donate your body to…. A body farm. A palace where scientists will toss your corpse out into different elements to observe the rate and change of decomposition based on different dump sites. They will examine the decomposition, the moisture loss, and the bugs which take to eating your body. This research will then be used to determine the cause o death for other corpses disposed of by murderers or in similar fashion.

It is gruesome, but I suppose…. It is useful for scientific efforts.

These aren't the only methods of body disposal.

Bodies have been tied to the top of large towers

Thrown into the woods to be eaten by animals

Dumped into pits.

And in a couple of cases, launched into the vacuum of space.

Different rituals require family members to spend more or less time with the body, to wrap it in special cloth, or to anoint it with certain oils. 

The Egyptians were widely known for their complex and involved enterrement rituals commonly known as mummification.

The body was first embalmed

The brain was removed

The organs removed and placed in specialized canopic jars 

The body was then dried

Then wrapped which continued to help in the drying process 

Then the body was finally entered, and due to the sandy heat of the desert, the body was often preserved to a great and surprising degree. Egyptians believed that those things you had in life would come with you after death, and so egyptian rulers were entered with great riches and inside grand palaces 

Then of course there is the last ritual which I learned about just recently.

Certain tribal societies will….. Eat…. their dead….

They will eat them….

As in the entire village will get together and consume the corpse in a feast, believing that without this they cannot enter the afterlife.

Beth watched the buildings pass as the air cab carried her over Los Angeles taking in the changes the last ten years had wrought on the city.  Most of the low-income areas had been bulldozed, and those areas were now filled with alien arcologies.  Massive buildings that stretched kilometers into the sky, each one a city unto itself, and in their shadows, the skyscrapers that had once been incredible achievements of human architecture and engineering.  The buildings which had been hubs of human industry and centers of financial empires were now reduced to little more than playhouses for the backwards primitives who had the misfortune to be born natives of the Galactic Hegemony’s latest colony world. If they’d had another century or two things might have been different.  Humanity had been advancing quickly.  They wouldn’t have been on par with the technology of the Hegemony by any stretch, but they might have been able to dictate better terms.  The Gatekeepers hadn’t cared.  The gate had drifted into a stable orbit in the outer system, and the Gatekeepers had announced that, like it or not, the Sol system was being added to their vast network of space fold gates.  The first ships from the Hegemony had arrived just a month later, and ever since, Earth had been on the road to becoming the galactic equivalent of a banana republic. So far, her job and her savings had let her avoid the worst of what was happening, but unemployment was at a record high as alien automation systems replaced human labor in almost every sector.  The company she worked for had shifted gears from research and development to reverse engineering alien tech and had seen a short windfall in profits, but that was starting to vanish as the inevitable inflation drove prices up and the people they had been selling reverse engineered tech could no longer afford it. Beth wasn’t really that worried for herself.  She’d been poor before, and however much she might hate the idea she could survive being poor again.  What brought her to LA today was Sam.  Sam was getting close to graduation, and she had acceptance letters from every college that could afford postage.  A 4.0 unweighted GPA, high SAT scores, and a couple of impressive summer internships meant that schools were falling all over themselves to offer her full rides.  Ten years ago, that would have all but ensured her a bright future.  These days a PhD from Harvard, Yale, or MIT wasn’t worth the cost of paper to print the degree. People still made noise about human exceptionalism and about taking humanity’s place in the larger galactic community, but Beth had spent a lot of time over the last decade studying the history of colonization on Earth, and it never once ended well for the people being colonized.Regardless of what  happened to the colonized peoples as a whole, there were always individual exceptions...  people who avoided the fate of their brethren.  It was her determination to ensure her daughter’s future that brought her to LA today.   While billionaires had started buying their kids spots in alien schools the moment they were  allowed out of the Sol System, Beth didn’t have that option.  She was well off enough that she and Sam weren’t feeling the effects of the colonization yet, but nowhere near rich enough to buy a ticket off-world for Sam, much less pay for an off-world education.  Instead, she’d spent years looking into other options.  So far, none of her work had paid off, but she hadn’t given up hope.   She was headed to a meeting with a broker who helped place kids into programs that offered grants, scholarships and all expenses paid exchange programs.  She was going to find a way to offer her daughter a better future than most of Earth’s children could look forward to.  No matter what it took. *** “Ms. Murray, it’s so nice to meet you,” the man said as he held out his hand.  Beth took it and gave it a quick shake while trying her best not to let on that he reminded her of a used car salesman.  She needed his help, and it wouldn’t do to offend him. “Nice to meet you too, Mr. Cooper.” “Please, call me Owen,” he said.  “Right this way.” He led her out of the small, brightly decorated waiting room and into a small, neat office.  He gestured to a chair in front of his desk as he walked around behind it and took his seat. “So, I just want to make sure we’re on the same page here Ms. Murray.  You are looking for an opportunity for your daughter to continue her education off-world, is that correct?” “Yes,” Beth said. “Okay.  I just wanted to make sure that we’re both looking for the same outcome.  Now, I’ve gone through Samantha’s records.  Academically, she’s in great shape, and the extra-curriculars are good too.  I’ve been able to find at least twenty different programs that will accept her.” “That’s great,” Beth said, though she didn’t believe it.  She’d heard the exact same thing from more than a dozen other brokers, and she suspected she wasn’t going to hear anything new.  “What are the terms?” “It varies from program to program.  All of them require a period of indenture, but some are as low as eight years.” Beth tried to hide her disappointment.  She wanted to give her daughter a better future, not sell her into virtual slavery for almost a decade. “Owen, I’m looking for a program without any period of indenture.  I know they exist, but you’re the fifteenth broker I’ve talked to and none of them have offered even an application to an indenture free program.” “They do exist, but Ms. Murray, you must understand.  There are a lot of people who want their children to receive an off-world education, and slots which don’t require a period of indentured service are in especially high demand.” “I understand that, but I haven’t gotten high demand, I’ve gotten completely unavailable.  I’d like to know why no one will even consider letting her apply.” Owen looked at her for almost a minute, not saying anything, before he finally leaned back in his chair and let out a weary sigh. “Honestly, Ms. Murray?” “Please.” “Those slots go to the kids of billionaires, presidents, CEO’s, ambassadors, kings and other high level government types.  Each year, a handful will go to some poor kids from the ghetto so that they can parade them around as part of a puff piece about how generous the aliens are, but that’s just window dressing.  The truth is, your daughter is neither rich enough, nor poor enough to ever get one of those slots.” Beth had to bite her tongue to keep from swearing.  She wasn’t surprised at all, but she was angry and frustrated.  She’d half suspected something like that was going on, but hearing it spelled out so clearly was still enough to make her blood boil. “Isn’t there anything, any way that I can get her off-world without selling her into slavery?” “Ms. Murray, Indentured Service is hardly slavery.” “It’s close enough.” Owen stared at her for a moment, and then shook his head. “What?” “It’s nothing.” “It’s something,” she said.  “Please.” He sighed.  “It’s not something I would normally offer to someone of your background.” “What does that mean?” “It means that some aliens have cultural practices that people of Western European descent find unpalatable, while those from other cultures would find those practices perfectly normal.” “I’m not sure I follow.” “Ms. Murray, you are aware that, much to the surprise of every biologist on the planet, there are a number of species with whom humanity shares a degree of reproductive compatibility?” “I am,” she said. “Well, there is a species called the Sionnach.  They’re native to a planet called Talamh in the Grian system, and they bear a rather striking resemblance to humans.  There are differences of course, but the basic morphology is the same.  The reason I bring this up is that about eighty years ago, Talamh suffered an environmental catastrophe that wiped out nearly ninety-five percent of their population in the span of a few weeks.  Because of their reproductive practices prior to the incident, the Sionnach found themselves facing a sort of genetic bottleneck, and they decided that the best way to alleviate this was to seek an outside infusion of genetic material.” “They’re looking for breeding stock,” Beth said. “Yes.” “You can’t be serious.” “And this is why I don’t offer this option to white people,” Owen said.  “Ms. Murray, I’m not suggesting you sell your daughter off as some kind of brood mare.  The Sionnach take selection of their mates very, very seriously.  They gather applications from a number of candidates, and the Sionnach in question reviews them, and selects the ones they like.  Then, their family reviews their choices, and select a candidate.  The candidate is then brought to the house of their prospective spouse, and they spend a period of time together.  Roughly five hours.  During that time they talk, get to know each other, and decide if they want to proceed.  If both parties agree, they enter a five year engagement.  During those five years, the candidate is treated as a member of the house.  They are given a stipend, they’re educated, they’re housed, fed, provided with medical care, and they undergo medical procedures which allow them to survive on Talamh without special equipment.” “What sort of medical procedures?” “Talamh is a high gravity world with a higher-than-normal concentration of heavy metals in the environment.  Your daughter would need procedures to be able to stand up to the local gravity, and to be able to filter out metals she would not normally be able to purge from her system.  She would also undergo a type of gene therapy which would make her more resistant to radiation and give her the ability to see parts of the infrared spectrum and hear sounds normally outside of the range of human hearing.” “That sounds dangerous.” “The Sionnach are one of the founding species of the Hegemony.  Their technology is thousands of years more advanced than ours, and they’ve been doing these procedures since before humans built their first cities.” Beth shook her head.  “An arranged marriage…  I don’t know.” “If I’m honest, it’s a long shot.  You would have to take your daughter for a screening.  She’d have to pass the screening for any sort of genetic issues that would eliminate her, then she would have to be selected by one of the Sionnach.  If that happens, you and your family would have to travel to Talamh at the expense of the Sionnach house that selected her, and your daughter would have to get through the initial interview.  But if she does, she would get the education you want for her.” “And what happens at the end of the five years if she decides she doesn’t want to marry the person who selected her.” “Then she’s free to walk away.  She’d be given a small amount of money, and passage to anywhere within the Hegemony, but she’d be free to do what she wants.” “No indenture?  No repayment of expenses?” Beth asked. “No,” Owen said.  “But again, it’s a long shot, and I take my normal fee just to put you through the application process, whether she gets selected or not.” “How many humans get selected?” Beth asked. “She’d be the first,” Owen said. “What’s your fee?” Beth asked. “Five hundred Hegemony credits.” Beth winced.  Given current exchange rates, that was almost ten thousand dollars. “How quickly would we know?” Beth asked. Owen turned and woke up his computer.  She watched as he pulled up a page and scrolled through before clicking on a link. “There’s only one family looking right now.  Applications are due by the end of next week.  You’d know in a month, tops.” Beth thought about it for a moment.  It was a longshot, and she wasn’t entirely sure it was a good idea, but it was better than an indenture, so she reached for her credit card. *** Sam looked up from her homework at the sound of a light knock on her bedroom door.  The door was wide open, and her mother was standing there looking at her.  Sam couldn’t quite place the expression on her face but given the appointment she had earlier, Sam didn’t have any doubt about what it meant. “No luck, huh?” she asked, trying not to let the relief she felt creep into her voice.  She knew an off-world education would open a lot of doors for her and give her opportunities that she wouldn’t have otherwise, and she really did want to go off-world, travel in space and see other planets someday, but the idea of living on another planet for four or more years was both frightening and overwhelming. “Not much,” her mom said.  “He did have one program you could apply for that doesn’t include an indenture period.  I emailed you the link to the application.  I need you to fill it out today, because I made an appointment for tomorrow for you to go for the physical and psych scan that’s required.” “Tomorrow?  Mom, tomorrow’s Jenny’s birthday party.” “I know, sweetie, and I’m sorry.  I know you were looking forward to the party, but you might have to miss it.  I’ve already got us portal tokens, and tomorrow is the only day we can go before the deadline without you missing school.  I made the appointment for as early as I could, so you should get home in time to go.” Sam wanted to argue, but she already knew it was useless.  She hadn’t missed a day of school since halfway through the eighth grade, and she knew her mom wasn’t going to let her start less than a month before graduation.  She also knew her mom wasn’t going to let her pass up a chance at an off-world scholarship just to go to a birthday party.  Even if the birthday girl was her best friend who she’d been crushing on since Kindergarten.  Of course, her mom didn’t exactly know that last part because she hadn’t told her she liked girls.  She’d considered telling her a few times, but she’d always changed her mind at the last minute, because if her mom knew she liked girls, she might decide that Jenny was a distraction that Sam didn’t need in her life and that wasn’t a battle she wanted to fight. “Fine,” she said, reaching for her laptop.  “I’ll do the application now.” “Thank you.  And Sam, I love you.” “I love you too, mom,” she said. Her mom left and Sam opened up the email link, which took her to a form that asked her for an invite code.  She checked the email and sure enough, there was a code for her.  She copied it and pasted it into the form, and when she did, it took her to the next page, and a lot of the information was prepopulated, including her latest ID card photo, name and age, along with her school transcripts and medical records.  The stuff that was left for her to fill out read more like a dating profile than a college application. The first section was hobbies and interests and activities.  She thought about it for a minute and decided to just be honest instead of going through all the BS she usually did for the college apps.  She put down soccer, swimming, surfing, electronics, robotics, reading, martial arts, camping and motocross.  She attached pictures of herself in her soccer uniform, along with a couple of video clips from some of the team’s games, then she added a few videos of her swim meets, and a couple of pictures and some videos of her surfing.  She pulled up her YouTube folder and attached a few build videos for some of her robotics projects, along with the parts lists, schematics, models for the 3D printed parts, and the source code for the micro-controllers she’d written.  She added a picture of her holding two trophies from a local Karate tournament where she’d placed second in sparring, and third in bo staff, and added a few videos of her matches.  She also added a few pictures from her camping trips and a picture of her sitting on a dirt bike, along with a video Jenny had taken of her running one of the beginner courses, then pulled up her ebook library and dumped the list of all her books, listed her favorite movies and attached all her playlists from her music library. The next section was a little weird.  It asked about what sort of foods she liked, so she gave a list.  Then is asked whether she enjoyed various activities.  Most of them were fairly common things.  Theater, music, art.  A couple she had to check the cultural database link.  She was surprised and excited when she found out that whoever was sponsoring this program apparently considered dragon racing important enough to put on the questionnaire. All in all, she spent about two hours filling out the application, and once she was done, she hit submit, and then pulled out her cell phone and opened up her text messages with Jenny. Sam:  ‘Bad news.  I might miss your party.’ Jenny:  ‘What?!!!’ Sam:  ‘Mom’s dragging me to New York in the morning for a physical and a psych scan for a scholarship.’ Jenny:  ‘She’s still on that off-world college kick?’ Sam:  ‘Yeah.’ Jenny:  ‘Girl, you don’t want to go to college with ET’s’ Sam:  ‘I’ve got to get accepted before I have to worry about it.’ Jenny:  ‘Come by my place when you’re done.  Even if you miss the party, I want to see you.’ Sam:  ‘Will do.  See you tomorrow.’ Jenny;  ‘Night.’ Sam sat down her phone and looked at her homework.  She’d wanted to finish before dinner, but there was no way that was happening now.  She grabbed it anyway and went back to work, trying to get as much done as possible before her mom called her downstairs.

my first ever year in uni is done! to commemorate, I’ve wanted to share how I experienced college and how I coped through it, with the stress and all. although with the current times, some of these may not be relevant as of the moment since most have transitioned to online classes, though when the time comes and we can all do onsite classes once again, I hope this would help you guys in some way! 😊 this is typewritten in laps lock btw sorry hihi

(note that I said ‘kinda’ since these are all just personal opinions and obviously, we all have different experiences hehe but nonetheless I hope this is helpful ily all <3 also, I put related links in some parts so that you guys can check it out if you want!)

what to expect in uni?

adjustment period. this is inevitable. the length varies to each person, however. some may instantly click within just a day, but others it may take weeks. hey, it's okay. don't beat yourself up for it. it takes time! you'll learn to be comfortable with your surroundings in time.

adapting to new surroundings. like I said, this varies. but personally, it would be great it if you become familiar with places around your uni and all the hidden treasures it has for you within your first few weeks. this will make it easier for you to find a place you can call your own nook, where you can feel comfortable staying while studying, like a hole-in-the-wall cafe or study hub. this helps give you a sense of constancy, having a place that you can always go to.

feeling like an outsider. it happens. being a freshman obviously means that you don't know anything that happens within the campus. the traditions are all new to you and don't be embarrassed if you're not aware of it beforehand. heck, most of them doing it probably don't even know them when they were freshmen either. soon, you'll come to learn about it, and it may even become part of your traditions as well!

how to make friends?

try to at least to make one friend or two during the start, especially when you are given tours or any freshmen activity the uni has prepared, so you won't be alone and risk getting lost by yourself!

if you have a block, this goes the same as well! a simple smile and some small talk can do wonders. then again, it is completely understandable if you can't make the first move. don't fret over it! there will be a lot of friendly and nice people who can do so, and you can start from there :)

but remember also, this people you get to know may or may not be the ones you'll be spending your whole college life with. sometimes by the end of the year, you're not even seeing the first people you hung out with, and that's completely okay! but also remember to have at least someone with you, a support system if you may call it. I swear it will make your life in college 100x more bearable, especially if you're far away from your friends back at home.

(quick disclaimer: I commute my way to uni, so I don't have a dorm, but I have tons of friends who do! so here's what I learned through them, especially during the times I had to stay the night at their place for a requirement or a night out drinking hehe)

having a designated container for everything

this makes everything easier to navigate to, especially if you're running late since you already know what you need to get and where to get it. if you have roommates, this makes it easier for you to know whose is who and avoid mixing all of your things together.

you can buy some cute little boxes for your containers to add some decorations, but if you decide to go with some old brown food pack boxes, as long as you know where you're putting them, go ahead.

how you decide to organize them in the container, however, is completely up to you. to recommend, I would like to follow the ever so famous KonMari method (here’s a good article to understand all about it, with videos!) as this has really made it easier for me personally in my own room, as I have my own containers as well.

for starters, I think it's completely necessary to at least clean your room, like a general cleaning, once a month.

sweeping the floor? at least twice a week.

taking the trash out? at least every other day.

cleaning/organizing your desk? every time before you go to bed or before class. 

this will help not just in making everything more sanitized, but it’s also a good way to practice self-discipline. cleaning is also known to be very therapeutic! (great article links here: x, x) like they say, a clear desk, clear mind. keeping your space clean is the least you can do for yourself.

roommates

it is both a hit or miss if you're roommates with a friend. believe me. this can either strengthen your relationship, or not.

the important thing here is that you both respect each other's privacy, and each other's space. all the better if both of you are on the same page when it comes to how to clean your place, but if not,   the best thing is that you make it clear between the both of you to not interfere with one another when it comes to your sides of the room. i've had friends whose dorm looks like two different places at once, but they made it work!

essentials

my previous post regarding my bag essentials (here) is still the same as ever even in uni, with just a few additions! you can click the link if you want to see the whole length of it, but if you can’t, here’s a summary of what I think is the most needed things in your bag:

water bottle (drink your h2o pls)

power bank (with a cord ofc)*

umbrella* (side note: the weather whenever I’m in uni seems to be so random I swear, it’s all sunny then after not even an hour passes, it’s so cloudy and looks like it could rain anytime! So yes, umbrella is needed.)

*these are new additions from the previous post I did! make sure those items that have cords have cord holders, too! So it’s more organized 😉

how to organize them

there isn’t really an exact way to organize it, but again, the best thing for me is to make sure that it is accessible for you to get what you need quickly. I personally use small containers to keep those with the same purpose together (like the kits and a pouch for my power bank and earphones)

if your bag has pockets on the side, put your water bottle there and your umbrella to save some space inside!

to avoid any possible theft, put your most valuable items at the bottom of your bag (like for example, your wallet, if you don’t need it and you have some loose change with you, put it at the bottom)

keeping it clean

my only advice for this is that you should clean and organize your bag pretty frequently. like your room, cleaning your bag can also be therapeutic (refer to previous links!). taking the trash out like scrap paper and other junk can be actually be cathartic for you and help release some stress.

importance of tracking expenses

here’s the thing: money can be pretty scary. even though I still live at  home with my parents, balancing my allowance for the week is pretty stressing! what more for those far away from their homes? you really need to be aware of what you’re buying and how much money you’re spending each day so that you can track and find the best way to utilize your allowance.

it's so tempting to spend a lot, especially when you’re with friends. It would be better if you and your friends also keep it in mind on checking your expenses! me and my friends, to save, would just usually go to the same place most days of the week that has a menu that is within our budget. this is so that when we have plans on going out by the end of the week or after a hellish one, we have some money to spare and splurge on!

It’s a good thing to note, especially in countries where student loans are commonly used, that tracking expenses and saving money can be extremely helpful in the long run. (I live in the PH so I am entirely familiar with student loans in the US and other countries so here’s an article that I think could help regarding saving money as a college student: link here)

why you need to save

learning how to save money is pretty beneficial for you and your discipline with handling money. this will definitely let you realize the value of it.

having extra money is extremely important because there will always be times when you suddenly need to spend, whether it be for a requirement or an emergency, and you need to prepared for those situations.

personally, saving money makes me feel independent and that I can manage on my own even if I still live with my parents. for those that are far away from their homes, this can be the same for them, too.

some tips in saving money

budgeting your money. my way of budgeting my money is that I would always take off 10-15% of my allowance first and immediately put that part of my savings for the week. after, I would equally divide the remaining money to each day I have classes for my lunch and commute (I only have classes 4 days a week with a uniform schedule, so I work around that). there would be times that I overspend due to needed contributions for requirements, so I make sure to always check how much there is of my savings and if ever, I would lower the 10-15% savings for that week to about 5%.

If you don’t need it immediately, don’t buy it. my rule for this is if I take more than 5 minutes to think about if I need or not, then it just means that I don’t need it immediately, so I let it go. If you really need that particular item, you wouldn’t spend so much time wondering if you really need to. so, bye and see you when I need you!

group meals all day, every day! sharing meal combos with your friends are definitely one of the best ways to save since you all are saving some extra cash. make sure to plan accordingly with your friends so that you get the best deal, and eat some good food without hearing a cry from your wallet.

student discounts are lifesavers. no matter how small or big the percentage off is, it will sure be a blessing so use it whenever you can! (the psychology students of my college have a organization called PsychSoc and all of us psych students are given these ‘psych cards’ that you can use with a 10% discount to all the stores given in the card, and yes you can say that I am using my card a lot haha)

there are a lot more that I would share that I think is extremely helpful especially to my fellow Filipinos, but I’m planning to make a separate post for that!

importance of managing your time with studies and orgs

admittedly, healthy study habits are hard to keep up with. this is especially challenging if you’re in an org or a club that’s pretty active and you have to split your time with it and your studies. keeping a routine can with help that! it is extremely important that you have a guide to follow so that you won’t feel like you’re swarmed with all of the pending tasks to do, whether it’s for your org or your class.

starting a routine. beginning something is always awkward, and sometimes you don’t know where to start so here’s some simple things I can suggest:

cutting back on your time on social media and streaming websites and adding more to your study time. that series you want to binge-watch? it can wait. set a time in your week where you can watch it and try to pace yourself. that goes for whatever is happening on twitter, facebook, or any social media.

trying the pomodoro technique! old, but gold. here’s a great post regarding it: (x)

doing your papers or other tasks immediately. better start now, than regret not doing so later. finishing a task immediately means you’re already done with one thing on your list, and this will help prevent you from piling up things on your to do list and cram at the last minute!

schedule non-academic or non-org related group hangouts after major activities and not before. you’re friends need to be on the same page with you with this, and it’s better that you are all agreeing with setting a night out on a date that is academic free, so you won’t have to worry about passing or attending something the next day.

understand that sometimes it’s okay to prioritize one over the other. if you have a major exam upcoming, talk to your org officers and tell them the you won’t be attending that much, they will understand! and also, tell yourself that it’s okay to shorten your study time for an important org event. you don’t have to always split your time equally, you just to need to split it based on what is more important for you at the moment.

 And lastly,

why you shouldn't forget to have fun

come on, you’re in college! have fun, meet new people, go out and drink (responsibly) and just feel like a college student. You don’t always have to be studying, you should make time for yourself to take a break and just relax and interact with your friends.

this will make things more bearable. college is an experience and you should experience it to the fullest. make your time count! doing this makes it easier to cope with your college life in the long run.

having fun is okay. don’t forget that! with all the stress coming through, especially during finals week, adding some fun makes it worth it. doing group studies with your friends, with you guys actually studying, is bound to bring some unexpected funny moments you’ll never forget. taking a breather from studying and playing some games can also be beneficial for you to relieve some stress. and like I said, maybe cleaning can help, too! just make sure that you’re not relaxing or studying too much, as too much can be harmful. always remember to try to balance things out, and that you got this! go and kick college’s butt!

For the Headcanon Meme- Zelda Spellman ▪️♦️

■ -  Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon

Zelda keeps a lot of the house the exact same as the way it was when she grew up, and she knows all the stories behind the knickknacks and artwork that her ancestors contributed to it. But, as Hilda’s domain is the greenhouse and kitchen, the library is Zelda’s. Her memories of it are mixed—it was the place she could escape to under the guise of studying whenever she was upset or someone upset with her but also where she was forced to turn when her parents were too preoccupied with honing Edward’s gifts to spend time teaching Zelda themselves. It’s where she would read and reread Lilith’s story to comfort and inspire herself and where she studied hard to surpass everyone, learning skills and knowledge from ancient books and ancestral journals that not even the academy’s collection held.

Those journals and other books about the world are part of what inspired her to travel and learn so many languages, bringing back interesting texts to add to the collection and her own trinkets and artwork to decorate the house. It’s where she first bonded with Ambrose once he came to live at the mortuary, both of them feeling stuck and restless. They would pass hours together discussing obscure works and exchanging stories of their travels, Zelda’s often inspired by a certain book or memento he asked about. Other times they would just read and enjoy each other’s company in silence.

Nowadays, she relegates the few Satanic texts saved for reference to a dark corner shelf and has tossed the rest, delighting in filling the space with diverse sources for her personal study. She enlists Ambrose in this task as well, when he eventually decides to fly the nest and travel the world. He sends back long letters of his travels, which she keeps in the bottom drawer of her desk, and with them interesting new books and beautiful little gifts he’s thought she would be interested in. Occasionally, whenever one is filled, he sends back his own completed journal to be added to the family collection. Zelda always handpicks a new one to buy and send back for him.

♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon

Zelda actually hums a lot absentmindedly while she’s doing tasks around the house or will find herself singing along under her breath while looking at sheet music for lessons, even if she’s just looking at the technical aspects of a piece. She’s always loved singing and music and taken great pride in her voice, and she has many favorite songs from many different eras and countries that she’s lived in. She doesn’t particularly like musicals, however; she just has a thing for Julie Andrews, and has therefore seen The Sound of Music more times than she’ll ever admit to.

While not so much a hobby as stress relief, she also does take a more hands-on role in the mortuary business than most people would expect. True, she’s not overly fond of the mess, and she can’t handle the bodies of children, but on a general basis she finds the snapping of bones and methodical weighing of organs to be a satisfyingly mindless activity. Besides, when there’s a closed casket, Hilda’s certainly not going to be the one to salvage the meat.

-Big Al is first person to be friendly to Danny and I'm sure Danny doesn't forget it. Headcanon Danny is def actively caring towards 'lower class', including homeless and drug addicts, and actually sees + treats them as equals. Classism definitely a theme in these shows with the people who struggle financially like Colleen being the kindest and most charitable and the rich being assholes.

-But also why is he informing Danny that the internet can be used as a search engine with no prior indication in their conversation that Danny doesn't know this? I mean, Danny does not, in fact, know this, but.

-In the news article, the photo of the Rands is the same one in Joy's apartment, but the Meachums are not there. However, they are not merely cropped out: the background extends into the spot they should occupy. Did some poor news article graphic designer have to go find a photo of that tourist spot background at the exact right angle and photoshop them together to get rid of the Meachums, or was Joy's photo a photoshopped family vacation image, which could have explained the awkward distance between the two families, even though it wouldn't have been that hard in editing to set them all closer together? Maybe they all still went on the same vacation together, but instead of asking a passerby to take a photo for them, both families took photos of each other and then someone combined them at a later date? Practically speaking, that still means the angle would be likely to be off for the background, and it's also suspicious that there are zero other tourists around. These rich families rented out the entire space?? Would lend to lack of external parties to take a group pic for them. Obviously, IRL explanation is they're all photoshopped onto a static background, but fun to think of the in-universe reasons. ...Actually, most likely explanation is that they took multiple photos - Rand only, Meachum only, maybe also kids only, Wendall+Harold only, etc, as well as group. So this entire train of thought is inconsequential. Oops.

Note: this is a technique commonly employed by abusers, and probably more triggering to Ward than Danny knows, even though Danny probably actually does think he's being sincere as opposed to manipulative.

-Danny provides personal details - probably this is the moment Ward starts to believe it might actually be Danny somehow, against all logic and reason. He looks shaken, then immediately starts trying to gaslight Danny. asdfghjkl WARD.

-->Ward lying to Danny's face and putting himself in the position of the righteous with Danny as the person in the wrong when they both know it's a lie is very reminiscent of the monopoly scene from when they were kids and the implied constant behavior from when they were kids. But this time, Danny doesn't accept it the way he did as a kid. He stares at Ward, remembering this pattern, actively teetering on PTSD flashback mode, and fights back. Makes Ward think he might be about to kill them both - while having flashbacks that hinder his ability to stop so Danny in hindsight gets freaked out about what he almost did too. (Note: looking freaked out and claiming he didn't mean to almost kill them both just now was probably more concerning to Ward rather than less.) And then he promises he'll be back because this isn't over. gdi, Danny, no wonder Ward wants you gone asap.

(Note: Ward puts off approaching Harold with the "Danny problem" until night 2, tries to handle it quietly until he has implicated himself (Danny now knows Ward tried to have him killed) and Danny is still present and now an even bigger threat)

-So many elevators. All express to specific floors/areas? This lobby is so unsettling. Elevator leads to another hall full of elevators, then stairs, then handprint access to hall with second elevator into penthouse. (Note: Ward is one of those people who press the close door button multiple times with a frustrated facial expression)

-Ward to Harold: "How do you even know about that? ...Shit. Are you behind this? Is this another one of your stupid tests?"

-Harold to Ward: "I wish you would take things like this more seriously, so I don't see my company destroyed."

-Photos on Harold's shelf: young Joy, posed photo of Meachums in formal-ish clothing, Harold's hands on both kids shoulders, indistinguishable group of people on a bridge(?) somewhere. Group photo atop a fancy box, Joy photo in front of the Meachum family photo. On Harold's desk: another photo of young Joy, this one looks like one of those posed school photos where they have the kid stand against a "tree" backdrop.

-Ward says out loud that he could ignore Harold and Harold wouldn't be able to do anything about it. Harold casually observes that Ward is now and has always been childish. Ward remarks that Harold has been telling Ward he's disappointed in him his whole life. Harold is still disappointed in Ward right now.

-Harold: this is how you make your employees loyal to you. *proceeds to display his complete dominance over Kyle, who looks nervous and threatened by the direct attention* Ward: "Jesus, Dad, what the hell is wrong with you?" (Still doesn't do anything to remove Kyle from this situation though)

-Harold lectures at Ward as if everything Ward has ever done is wrong, always, including snapping his fingers at him when he starts to speak himself, like a bad dog, and listing off things that Ward has already brought up to Joy as if Ward is an incompetent who would never consider those angles himself

-Ward makes a snide comment, Harold snaps at him, Ward smiles a little bit because he has succeeded in getting under Harold's skin for a moment

-Harold: Leave this to me. I'll tell you exactly what to do. Ward: Like always. Harold: Like always.

-Awww, Danny was rushing back to tell his new friend Al all about Ward sending people to kill him, possibly looking for advice? ;_; (Also, why is there a foreboding music significance to Al having a bird tattoo? Does this ever come back??? I don't remember this mystery going anywhere.)

-Danny is lurking in Joy's office. He doesn't say anything even slightly reassuring, like that he has an appointment, just heavily implies that he snuck in. sigh.

-"I'm not gonna hurt you," Danny laughs, after displaying a whole lot of extremely threatening behavior. Joy smiles, drugs him, and buys time until it kicks in.

Assessment 1: “Hello, My Question Is”

This assignment allowed us to disencumber an uncertainty that we had about communication design, based on our experience that we have lead within this course. With the regulation to be an open ended question that didn’t require a certified answer; I explored my options by researching objects to start with and then drafting questions that could relate to these objects. I immersed myself by researching physically manipulated type on Pinterest, and this enabled me to spread my perception of the task. I then generated questions and lightly explored ways in which I could present them.

GENERATION OF IDEAS

Idea of growing ideas, and nourishment. Could be worded like: How do artistic juices run wild / flourish? Or how do you nourish creativity in design? How can ideas be plentiful? Food for thought. What fuels creativity? By using the key words ‘nourish’ and ‘plentiful,’ this gives me the opportunity to use food to build the letterforms. Specific ideas under food include:

-Using 100’s and 1000’s scattered and drawing letter with finger (figure ground)

-Donuts for O’s, this can add colour and playfulness

-Spaghetti as a way of producing a cursive, free flowing, organic aesthetic

-Broccoli, can be cut up in different ways and with the stem and the top it can variate the width within the letterforms

-Coffee cup from a birds eye view can create the letter ‘O.’

-Each letter is on a plate, this helps establish a unique composition and create a background context.

Idea of travel. Could be worded like: Where can design take me? When do good ideas lift off? What moves design? How does design shift between cultures and location?

-This could be interpreted inside of a suitcase by arranging objects such as Toiletries, money, keys, shoes, charger, sunglasses, etc.)

-This could be difficult as it is a restricted size to present a question with lots of characters.

-Where will design bring me?

-Where can design take me?

-Made out of clothing items (socks, shirts, skirts, long sleeves, bra)

How can designs be sustained? This can be made out of green objects and make a depiction through the symbolism of this colour. Or I can used recycled items to build the letterforms such as cans, bottles, cardboard, magazines, etc.

How can I stand out as a designer?

-Flamboyant colours used

-Objects that convey individuality - use items that mean something to me to create a more personalized and intimate version of the question.

How can design advance learning and education?

-Context of the coronavirus

-Books, rulers, stationary, etc.

What is the future for design?

-Electronic wires and gadgets to form type

-Tin foil

How can I grow as a designer?

-Can use plant life to support this question. Flowers, leaves, natural elements, food scraps etc.

How can design sway emotion?

What is it to be human?

How do you measure success?

How can I improve lives?

What stories will I tell?

Who will build the future of design?

- This could be built out of tools, string, blocks etc. Can focus on materials and methods within design and the physical act. Tape measure for letter D.

My finalist questions after my exploration were ‘How do you nourish creativity in design?’ and ‘Who will build the future of design?’ The first option was made of 33 letters and the second was made up of 29 letters. It was appropriate to choose the question with the least amount of characters as it needed to be scaled to fit within the one photograph. I also thought that the idea of using food had been over-exploited and didn’t want to orchestrate this idea alongside anyone else in my class. The accessibility to food at this time was critical as supermarket stock was declining with people over-purchasing and stocking up on goods, while it seemed to be an expensive to create 33 letters out of different foods. I also thought that by chopping, breaking and forming food to suit each letterform, it took away my creativity within the task and I was set on creating letterforms with fixed objects. By doing this, I was challenging myself at a more extensive level and I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. This is why I chose the question ‘Who will build the future of design,’ and I planned that I will use tools from my dad’s workshop.

CREATION DAY

Upon entering my dad’s workshop, I didn’t have any pre proposed ideas of what I could use, I would just create with my findings and try to make them work as I went. I began by opening up each draw and digging through rusted nails, bolts, collections of spanners, brushes, clamps, plumbing utensils, tapes etc. With a creative mindset, I tried to visualize how each object I picked up could be used as any of my 29 letters. Some objects immediately lent themselves to certain letters such as the G clamp for the letter G, or the tape measure pulled out to create a D. For others, it was harder to facilitate a shape that could be recognized and was legible within my composition. This process was carried out by arranging the formed letters on the floor in the order of the question and paying attention to ways that I could make it appear individual yet bold. I used objects inside of other objects to decorate the letters, and give them a more stylized edge instead of a minimal appearance. Eg: I used a sink drainer in the centre of a curved edge to form a D.

When creating my letters, I had to pay attention in differing the appearance of same letters. I then played around with the paragraph style of my question and the vertical and horizontal distance of the words. Originally I placed the “Who will build” on the first line, with “the future of” on the second line and “design” on the third line; however, it was too horizontal and I wanted my question to be more grouped together. I then rearranged the tools, so that there was less words on each line and it created an overall square shape in its spacing. I then framed the letters inside ruler edges on opposing corners and placed an outdoor glove on the top right hand corner to show a sense of craftsmanship and the idea that the process of building the future of design is never completed and it is an adaptive and ongoing process.

It was then, that I didn’t like the way the drop sheet reflected light as it is plastic and the colour of the dark blue took away the contrast from the tools. It was illegible and the dimensions of the drop sheet made it hard to photograph without my floor getting photographed. I then reverted to using a clean white sheet as a background, so the tools could be easily seen and cast shadows were visible.

When setting up the white sheet it came with it’s own set of challenges. The sheet had many wrinkles in it, so I resolved this by ironing it out on the floor, which was challenging as when crawling over parts on the floor, it became wrinkled again, or the material gathered in places. When placing the tools on the sheet once again, I wasn’t certain of the exact placement and when shifting them around the white sheet got dirty in places from the oil bathed tools, dust and dirt. This was resolved by editing out those spots on photoshop and smoothing the colour of the sheet. I chose my room to take the photos in as it has the most direct sunlight, however, as the window is on one side of the sheet, I used my LED makeup mirror to shine across the other side and brighten up the dark areas. As the tools are large in size, I then found it difficult in capturing the question in one single photo, so I stood on top of a high chair and hovered my phone high above the grouping of objects. This took a few trials and errors but eventually I got some even, well balanced shots, of which, I took onto Photoshop to edit and manipulate.

This assignment allowed me to extend my knowledge of how typefaces can differ and how humans perceive them. It allowed me to think outside of the box and use different materials and methods in aiding my idea development and concepts. It furthered my understanding of the raster-based program, Photoshop and how I can edit my photos. These skills can all be used in my future assignments and my other courses.

A.N: I know, I know, I’ve been super inactive lately. I’m sorry. But I’m starting a new fic and I’m a sucker for hybrid au’s. It’s always super difficult to find one for Namjoon that’s not poly and I hope I do this au justice. Let me know what you think!!!

“He won’t let anyone into his room. Not even when he’s not there. Last time, Peggy waited until Namjoon was in lunch and apparently she misplaced something because he got all aggressive with her.”

“What did she move?”

“No idea but he was literally blowing smoke. I’m pretty sure if the guards weren’t there, he would have actually eaten her or something.” The woman set down her sandwich and checked behind her to make sure no one else was in the room and leaned forward to whisper, “Ya’ know, some of the hybrids they have here are just downright animals. Like, they look human and then all of a sudden they attack you. Their brains just aren’t as complex as ours, it’s no wonder they don’t get adopted.”

The man across from her nodded, unable to vocalize his agreement with a full mouth. He swallowed and wiped his mouth with a napkin, “Is she still gonna’ clean?”

The woman huffs out a laugh, “Doubt it. She’s trying to get on paid leave, saying she needs to recuperate from working in a hostile work environment. So now I have to cover her wing.”

You made quick work to smooth the new sheets and place the plushies back on the bed in what you thought was a neat order.

You finished moving everything off of the surfaces in the room before grabbing the generic cleaning spray the shelter bought and wiping everything down. Even though you had only been with the non-profit company for two months, you had picked up things fast. Granted, your only job used to be delivering stuff and doing small errands for people higher up, then that expanded to you cleaning as one of the workers left. But each room was cleaned the same and after repeating the same motions for the rooms that came before this one it quickly became muscle memory and so it wasn’t even half an hour before you were moving on to the next room in the wing.

Namjoon sighed as Yoongi, Taehyung, and Jin were escorted to their wings for night hours. They weren’t allowed in the same wing as Namjoon, no matter how many times he pleaded for them to be moved. It was apparently too dangerous for them to be among predator hybrids and the only reason why Jin was moved closer to Yoongi and Taehyung was because his hibernation was approaching and wouldn’t be a threat since he’d be too busy resting.

Jungkook and Jimin waved as they left to their section of the wing with the other large cats. Hoseok patted Namjoon on the back as he left in the opposite direction where the canine breeds were housed and Namjoon made his way to his section.

There were only a few rooms in his section. Most of the space in his wing was dedicated to giving rooms to the canine and cat breeds as they were more popular. Rare breeds like Namjoon were far and in between. In fact, he was the first dragon hybrid this shelter has had and the only other dragon was in another city completely. He wasn’t quite too sure but he’s certain that his neighbors are a griffin and phoenix hybrid breed. His classes were at a different time than theirs and he always spent his recreation time holed up in his room or with his group of friends, so he’s never actually seen them.

Before he opens his door, Namjoon can tell that there’s something off. There’s a faint aroma that drifts from his room and with how faint it is, he can tell that whoever was in his room had been gone for a few hours. The lavender and mint scent was far different than the tobacco-tinged scent of ammonia and latex he was used to on cleaning days.

Namjoon’s eyes quickly flashed into slits as he stepped towards his door and further took in your scent. His primal instincts were internally screaming at him. He could feel the familiar heat rising in his chest as all the ways his treasure could have been disturbed ran through his head. But a sharp clang from one of the night guards batons against the cement wall drew Namjoon back to his more rational side. And ducking his head away from the warning glare of the guard, Namjoon held his breath and ushered himself into his room.

Despite how still his lungs were, Namjoon was powerless to stop himself from taking in your overwhelming scent. His room was saturated with the smell of you. With one breath in, the small slits in Namjoon’s eyes were blown wide as his mind became dizzy and clouded with the aroma of someone he’s never met. The caseworker exhales a drained sigh, “Namjoon, we’ve come to the conclusion that no matter who cleans your room, there’s always going to be something that will be put out of place. Once you get adopted you keep everything the way you like it, but for now, you’re going to have to deal with it.” The bags under the older woman’s eyes are deep as she lectures Namjoon while focusing on the adoption papers laid in front of her.

Sure, she never intended for that to become practically a full-time job as the wedding planner alongside Sasha’s crazy best friend Katya, but hey, everything for your friends, right?

Chapter 8 - We’re all good, but we ain’t angels

Trixie’s always been a heavy sleeper who depends on an alarm clock to actually do things on time. She’s trained herself enough to wake up at the first sound and get up after one single snooze, however tired she might be, but she always sets an alarm if she has any appointment before noon.

Today, she wakes up at seven. Her eyes snap open as if she’s been shocked back into reality and it could be a dream she can’t remember but the point is she’s wide awake sooner than she has to be and it’s the first time in a really long while that this has happened. Her stomach is fluttering with something akin to anxiety and and she gives herself a few minutes to breathe deeply.

She’s meeting Katya today.

She grabs her phone from her nightstand and rolls around so that she’s facing the opposite side from the one Katya had slept in when she was there. There are no messages from Katya, so at least she didn’t cancel their plans. Yet.

Trixie thinks she’s probably awake, always up early to go do her yoga and from time to time even run or go to the gym - where she finds the motivation Trixie will never understand, but she finds it hot that she does so. Which, obviously, is totally inappropriate and definitely not what Trixie wants to be thinking about right now. Focus!

She’s not tired at all and sees no point in staying in bed when she so antsy, so she gets up. She takes her time since she has it - she takes a long shower and washes every thread of hair, puts conditioner in twice until it’s soft and her curls are more defined, and then she lets her body dry naturally before putting on the outfit she’s picked - which, in itself, is a task that takes forever because she’s overthinking everything, doesn’t know how she should dress, what the encounter will be like, what they are at this point.

She doesn’t even know what she wants so say. What she wants to hear.

She’s completely ready to go at barely 08:30 and just stands awkwardly in her own hallway for five minutes considering what to do. She could just hang around her own place in nice clothes and makeup for an hour while feeling anxious and with nothing to do, or she could go out and maybe get some breakfast even though they’re going to a coffee shop. Getting fresh air sounds like a better idea than feeling trapped in her own apartment.

She walks aimlessly, trying to find a nice place to eat or anything else to do, really, and after she’s settled for a bagel and a latte from this hipster restaurant near her house, she lets her feet drag her around as each step releases some of her worries. She’s unbothered by where she’s going because she’s not in a hurry, has plenty of time to kill, so she simply wanders around until at some point she finds herself in a place she really isn’t sure she should be at: in front of Katya’s building.

She stops on her tracks, looks all around her wondering what the hell, Trixie? After several seconds just staring at the top of the building she tries going up three steps, but freezes and goes down again, stops in front of the staircase with her bottom lip between her teeth thinking about what to do. She could just turn around and go back home, breathe for like five minutes before going to the coffee shop. She could go straight to the café and have time to recompose herself. Or she could just wait there until Katya appeared and own up to the fact that she walked there.

Then, she hears behind her, “Trixie?”

The voice is confused and it’s definitely Katya’s. Trixie freezes on the spot, turns around slowly while she gulps.

“Uh, hi.” She gives a short stupid wave. “I was in the neighborhood.”

Katya has bags in her hands, visibly filled with plants, her hair wet from what Trixie assumes was a recent shower. She raises her eyebrows.

“Right. In the neighborhood.”

There isn’t a lot to do near Katya’s place so the excuse won’t take her far, but she sticks with it.

“Yeah. In the neighborhood.”

Katya just stares at her and Trixie feels very vulnerable. There’s an intensity to Katya’s eyes that Trixie’s never really noticed but might have always been there. She feels seen. She also feels uncomfortable being this close to Katya, tries to repress the memories of that night but isn’t quite successful as they’ve been visiting her quite frequently, different feelings attached each time. She takes a step back.

“Ok,” Katya finally says as if Trixie’s movement took her out of her stupor. “I went for a jog earlier and saw some nice plants but I didn’t have my wallet so I thought I’d go buy some before going out to meet you. I was gonna drop these inside and go.”

Katya is basically rambling as she often does, but her explanatory tone tells Trixie she’s nervous - which is actually relieving, because she is too. Trixie nods for lack of what to say. “Cool.”

Katya doesn’t move and neither does Trixie, both staring at each other and their surroundings for longer than would be considered normal. It’s awkward and Trixie doesn’t like it, still hates the feeling of being awkward around Katya, even after everything - specially after everything.

“I’ll be back in a sec-” Katya finally moves towards the door, but Trixie turns with her.

“I can come with you? We can talk here.”

She doesn’t know why she’s offering this, being alone with Katya at her place doesn’t sound like the best idea for their situation, but she also doesn’t feel like talking about everything in a public place.

She’s inclined to believe she walked here for a reason.

Katya looks uncertain, guarded even, but nods nonetheless. “Uh, yeah, of course. It’s a bit messy, I wasn’t expecting anyone.”

“That’s fine, you’ve seen how I live.” It’s supposed to be a joke but they look at each other as she says it and both try to pretend they aren’t thinking about the last time Katya was there.

Trixie finds it harder and harder not to think about it. Both the good and the bad sides of it.

“Well, come on then.”

They walk in silence towards the building and share the elevator with a young woman and a crying baby and Trixie’s almost glad for their presence there to prolong their silence. She wants to talk things over - she does - but at the same time she wants to bury it deep inside as she usually would and she knows that each floor that the elevator goes up is a step closer to unleashing feelings. Trixie’s not looking forward to that.

They wish the woman with the baby a good morning when they exit on Katya’s floor and once inside her place Trixie stands unsure near the door as Katya goes to her balcony to place her newly bought plants. She can see the table they ate dinner at together all those weeks ago and the couch where they sat afterwards and she can practically hear the echo of Katya’s words mixed with the dreaded text, I don’t believe in forever, I don’t do relationships.

God, what is she doing? This is a bad idea.

“Trixie?” Katya asks from where she appears in front of her, Trixie lost in thought. “You okay?”

“Uh, yeah,” she agrees even though she isn’t. “Just thinking.”

Katya averts her gaze. “Uhum.”

It’s awkward, just awkward. Trixie didn’t expect this to go well but she didn’t expect things to be so hard. Talking to Katya had always been organic and now it’s just heavy, difficult. Fuck, why did Katya ruin everyth- no. No. She isn’t going to think like that. They are here to talk. To figure things out - one way or the other.

“Would you like some coffee?” Katya offers once the silence is too long and Trixie’s grateful.

“Oh, yeah, I’d love some.”

“You can sit down, I’ll be right back. Black, one spoon of sugar, right?”

Trixie just nods. Katya remembers how she takes her coffee.

She moves to the couch and sits on the side where Katya had sat last time - it’s a weak but manageable attempt to detach the current situation from then. She doesn’t look around, makes active effort to ignore the paintings and photos around her, the colors of the room.

Katya is back sooner than she expects, holding two mugs. She offers one to Trixie and sits opposite her on the couch, all the space possible in between them. It hurts Trixie even though she thinks it shouldn’t.

She takes a deep breath. All she wants is to keep a clear and open mind, knows she’s guilty of walking into arguments with her mind set and this habit has ruined one too many things for her. She’s hurt but willing to listen, understands more than Katya probably realizes and just wants to understand it fully. She just wants to turn the page, maybe to another chapter or maybe to the end of the story.

“So,” Trixie starts although unsure of how to proceed with the sentence. What does she even want to say? She wants to understand what happened that day - while, simultaneously, never addressing it.

“So,” Katya nods. “The wedding.”

“Oh.” The wedding. Of course, They had an agenda and the wedding was their main plan. “Right. You had questions?”

Katya stares at her, blinks a few times and then sighs as she averts her gaze, blows a little at her steaming cup. “I did, but maybe it can wait.”

Trixie gulps and nods even if Katya is not looking at her. “Okay.”

She doesn’t know if she should talk or if Katya should speak first, so she sips at her coffee. It’s too hot and it burns the tip of her tongue, but she bites her discomfort down. She feels unfair knowing more than Katya is aware of, but she doesn’t want to be the one to burst the bubble and actually address the situation.

Jesus, she’s a mess.

Katya is still not looking at her when she speaks again. “Sasha told me you disappeared for a few days after the party. Stopped answering calls or texts. I got worried.”

Trixie had wondered how Katya got worried to the point where Willam heard about it when she’d made no attempt to contact her prior to the written note. She just nods. “I know. I needed time, I was very angry.” She sees no point in denying her feeling, her discontent has been more than obvious at this point.

Yet, Katya looks at her quizzically. “Angry?”

“And sad. Heartbroken.” She shrugs as if it’s no big deal even though it’s quite possibly the biggest deal Trixie’s dealt with.

“What?” Katya’s tone is nothing but surprised and Trixie is not following. Are they talking about the same thing?

“Uh, yeah? What did you expect?”

Katya just blinks at her several times, her mouth agape completely dumbfounded. “Uh-”

“But I don’t know if I am anymore. I mean, I am a little, but I understand it now.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You leaving.” Trixie doesn’t say it but there’s a silent duh at the end of her sentence.

“Trixie-” Katya’s face gets more and more confused by the second, but now that she’s started Trixie wants to talk this through.

“But, yeah, I did learn a few things that sort of gave me some perspective.” Katya doesn’t say anything, just stares at her as if waiting. She still looks confused. “I know about… I was just trying to figure out my feelings and Shea thought-”

Katya’s posture changes completely once Trixie says that, she actually snorts and it’s enough to shut Trixie up in complete confusion and for her eyebrows to shoot up. "Of course,” Katya comments.

Trixie doesn’t get Katya’s sarcastic tone all of a sudden and it completely throws her off. She just needs to finish her train of thought, she just needs Katya to know what she knows - and to explain it better. "What I’m trying to say is that I know about the wedding.”

Katya is back to confused. Either way Trixie is still not following. “The wedding?”

“Yeah, uhm, the one- with your ex.” God, this is uncomfortable. “From college.”

“Oh.” Katya looks stunned, her face darkens. “Oh.”

“Shea was just trying t-”

“You know what, I don’t care why she thought she should tell you that.” She moves her free hand around, angry eyes looking around the room. “It’s personal. I didn’t even know she knew it, god, Sasha is gonna hear it.”

Trixie had not considered that Katya might be mad at Shea for telling her. It makes sense, of course, and now she’s dug herself into a bigger hole and she doesn’t know how to get out of it. She also never meant for Katya to get mad at Shea.

“I’m sorry. I was just trying to understand…”

“Understand what, exactly?” Katya looks at her with the anger she’s been aiming at the room and as bad as Trixie feels about her situation, she’s first and foremost hurt by Katya’s actions and she won’t allow Katya to disregard her further.

“You!” she exasperates because what does Katya expected, really? Maybe Shea had been wrong in telling Trixie but Katya can’t act as if all of this isn’t her fault.

“Me? What does that even mean? You’re not making any sense today!”

So she’ll play dumb, that’s her move today, huh? “You’re joking, right?“

"Me? You do all those theatricals and- You know what, no. Okay.” Katya runs her free hand through her hair and then takes a sip of her coffee. Trixie is too stunned to say anything. “I promised myself I wouldn’t argue with you. We’re gonna talk this over, like adults.”

Now Trixie is the one who snorts. “Sure.”

Katya takes a deep breath, drinks one more sip and places her almost empty cup on the coffee table in front of them. Trixie hasn’t touched hers again and by now it must be getting cold.

“That… that is very personal, Trixie.” Katya’s voice is deflated and Trixie’s guard falls down a bit. She knows it is and she thinks it must be the memory that Katya avoids the most. “And it happened a long time ago. I’m not sure what that has to do with anything.”

Trixie looks at her in disbelief. That’s got to do with everything, doesn’t it? “Uh, I don’t know, perhaps your fear of commitment?”

Katya stops as if she’s been punched. “That’s not- I don’t have a fear of commitment! And why do you even care, anyway?”

What is wrong with their rollercoaster of feelings today? They haven’t even properly talked yet.

“Because you left! You literally fled like a stupid fuckboy, what the hell!”

“Are you-” Katya stops mid sentence with large movements of her hands, it’s like she doesn’t know the words she needs to say, like her feelings are too fast for her brain. “Why is that so bad considering where you’re at?”

What? “What the fuck are you talking about?”

It’s like a ping pong match and Trixie’s head is throbbing at the back and forth. That’s not what she expected, it’s not how she wanted things to go. She just wants an answer. She just wants Katya to explicitly say what happened and what now. Not this.

Katya seems to take in Trixie’s stance and expression, doesn’t say anything as Trixie places her full coffee cup on the table and puts both her hands on her forehead, squeezing while she breathes.

“Okay.” Katya says quietly. “Okay, let’s do this right. Tell me what Shea told you.”

“Katya-”

“I’ll have my beef with her later. Just tell me what you know.”

Trixie takes a deep breath, hopefully now they’ll accomplish what they need: sort it all out. “She just told me the general thing. Dated for a long time, got engaged, abandoned three days before the wedding.”

“Two.”

“Huh?”

“It was two days before the wedding. The ceremony was on a Saturday, she left sometime between noon and five on Thursday while I was working.”

Katya is looking at a blank wall as she says it, her expression mirroring the surface, no emotion to show. Trixie feels all of those things inside her chest again, thinking about what Katya must have felt like. How many times has she told the story? How long did it take her to get over it? Has she, even?

“I’m so sorry,” Trixie says, because she is. She’s still hurt and still wants Katya to properly explain herself - ‘I was left at the altar years ago’ isn’t quite a complete excuse - but she is terribly sorry that someone as lively as her went through that, that Katya went through that. Things might be all sorts of wrong but Trixie likes her. Trixie still doesn’t want Katya to suffer.

Katya shrugs. “It took me a long time to even understand that it’d happened - I never understood why. Not why she left but why she waited until the very last minute. She could have ended it sooner, you know.”

“You never talked about it afterwards?”

“No. While I was at work she packed every single thing she owned and every item in the house that she had paid for and just- just left. I came back to an empty apartment and a note on our fridge board saying, and I quote ‘I just can’t go through with this, you can keep all the refunds and the presents’.”

"Oh my god.”

“She’d never been the cold type so that was- I don’t know. I didn’t try to talk to her right away, I was still hopeful she was gonna change her mind and come back on the day of the wedding but - she didn’t, of course. I texted her a few times after that and she never replied.”

Trixie opens her mouth but she doesn’t know what to say. It doesn’t matter because Katya is still fixated on the wall, just telling the story without paying any attention to Trixie’s reaction, apparently lost down memory lane.

“A few months later I went to San Diego for a job and I saw her in a café. She was holding hands with a girl - and it might be my mind playing tricks but she looked so much like her old high school girlfriend. I didn’t stay there to investigate and I never checked any of her social media but, like, I’d seen plenty of pictures of the girl and it really, really looked like her.”

“That’s really shitty.” It’s not a good reply to the situation but Trixie hardly thinks there would be any.

“It is. Makes me wonder about our years together, you know? If she was in love with her old girlfriend through all of it… I don’t know, I never pegged her for a cheater but I never pegged her for a quitter either. Just shows you that sometimes the people you know the best… well, sometimes you don’t actually know them at all.”

Trixie gulps because she’d used those words before - and she’d been talking about Katya.

“Yeah. I get that.”

“So, yeah,” Katya nods absentmindedly as she looks at Trixie, apparently back in the moment. “That did make me wary of relationships for a long time - my feelings for her lasted for a good while after that. It must have been a year, maybe more, where I didn’t try to have any kind of relationship. But I’m over it, now, I’m past that, I’m past her.”

Trixie nods because, yes, people move on from these things eventually. But, still, she knows the wounds linger. “Being over it doesn’t mean that you aren’t still wary.”

Katya rolls her eyes. She’s playing it light but Trixie can see she’s exhausted from what she just revisited. “Of course these things affect me but I’m not afraid of commitment-”

“Katya you said it so yourself on this very couch.”

“No, what I said was that being with someone forever sounds like a naive expectation! And either way-”

“You texted it to me!” Trixie cuts her off because, god, tragic past aside, how can Katya still be making so light of the fact that she left. No explanation, no nothing, unequivocally left. “You did it right after- after-”

“Like you don’t know why.” Katya is exasperated and honestly so is Trixie. Things just keep escalating totally out of their control and she is frustrated - they both are. “You can’t tell me this hurts you as much as it hurts me.”

“What? Why would you be hurt? You’re the one who decided to leave!”

“Because of you! Because I like you and-”

Trixie cuts her off with a snort. “That seems plausible, sleeping with a girl you like and then fleeing!”

Katya gets up and throws her hands in the air as if surrendering. “You’re impossible, Trixie.”

How do things keep getting out of control? Why is it so hard to talk about your feelings?

“No, you’re impossible!” Some part of Trixie feels bad for exploding at Katya after what she just told her, but the fact that Katya hadn’t owned up to it or apologized once is driving her up the wall. After Katya’s texts the day before Trixie fully expected her to just be forward and explain herself, but they keep dancing around this and Trixie’s getting tired. “I like you, I actually like you and I can’t believe that I do, honestly, I can’t believe that after all this time and everything that it’s you, and that you’d go out acting like-”

“Please, don’t play the victim-”

“Shut up, I’m not doing anything!” Trixie gets up too and starts pacing, her breathing heavy. “Do you know how hard this is for me? Do you have any idea how hard it is to have this happen after- god after the mess my romantic life was - or is, I don’t know? I was secretly hung up over Shea for years, Katya, years, did you know that?”

“Duh?” Katya replies as if it’s the simplest question in the world.

Trixie stops in her tracks. Her eyes snap at Katya immediately. “What?”

“What, you think I would forget?” Katya’s tone borders on mockery.

“Forget?” Is she serious? “You actually knew it?”

Katya looks at her as if she’s grown another head, her whole body is practically vibrating.

“What does that even mean, you told me!” She accuses pointing her finger. Trixie freezes completely. What? “You get fucking hammered, ask me to bring you home and fucking sleep with you and then you 'sweet talk’ yourself to sleep with tales of you best friend who you are in love with and I’m supposed to stay? What else, you expected breakfast in the morning, too?”

Trixie is still frozen, her chest tightening at the words. She opens and closes her mouth incessantly, trying to find words, any word at all, but her brain is empty. She can’t have told Katya she’s in love with Shea, not when she knows those feelings diminished and disappeared over the years, not when she is so certain that she’s been over that for longer than she’s even realized, not that night when everything had changed, not after being with Katya.

Not when Shea isn’t the one she’s in love with.

“I’m- I’m not in love with Shea.”

Katya’s laugh is humorless and Trixie hates it more than she hated their entire conversation today, she feels like their roles suddenly reversed from what she thought they were a mere minute ago and she doesn’t know what to do with herself. “Well, that’s not what you said that night.” It looks like it pains her to say this. “Right after- god.” She covers her face with her hands and Trixie’s heart squeezes so tight that her entire chest burns.

“I can’t have said that.” Did she really drink enough to forget something like this? “Not like that. That’s not - I don’t think I was ever in love with her. I didn’t say that. What did I say, Katya, I know I didn’t use these words?”

“You don’t remember? You’re kidding me.”

Trixie shakes her head, her stomach filled with guilt. She started this whole thing thinking she’d been done wrong but apparently that’s not quite true. “I don’t, I’m sorry, I really don’t.” She really is sorry and she needs Katya to believe it. “But I know for certain I didn’t say that, because it isn’t how I feel. It’s not - I think I never felt like that but I’m sure I especifically don’t feel like that now.”

Katya searches her eyes and they stare at each other for seconds on end in complete silence. Trixie hopes that she can convince Katya of - she doesn’t know what, exactly. That she doesn’t like Shea? That she likes her? Both? Whatever it is, if it’s on her… Katya seems to be a lot more forgiving, which she knows it’s unfair, but she didn’t expect to be on the apologizing end of the equation and now she somehow is, even if Katya’s actions hadn’t been the most mature reaction to it all. But maybe, if it’s up to Trixie to fix this… maybe they can find a better alternative. Something that isn’t cutting contact entirely or just reklinding their friendship - perhaps Trixie can work on them finding something more. Maybe she can convince Katya.

Katya’s posture changes all of a sudden, she looks a little more relaxed, less guarded maybe, even if her expression is still pained, and she takes a deep breath before sitting down again.

“I shouldn’t have- you were really drunk- I kne-”

“No, stop.” Trixie will most likely never live down her habit of drinking to try to make things easier. They almost always backfire. “I remember everything- well, almost everything about that night. I- I was sober enough to consent to everything and I remember everything and- I enjoyed everything, too.” She hopes Katya knows how much that night meant to her - she hopes she’s said it, then, although it seems unlikely. So she wants it to be clear now. “It’s just, talking, I get talkative when I’m drunk and I don’t always-”
