it was a moment, a mere moment, of weakness. that was what harriet was telling herself. hiding in the closet of her quarters because she happened to hear a man on the docks yelling, a man who happened to sound like her father, was just an instinctive reaction.

she wasn’t actually scared.

so when sammy opens her closet door, face full of worry and sympathy, she doesn’t cry like a baby would.

and if he notices the tears that definitely weren’t spilling onto her cheeks, he says nothing of it, instead reaching a hand in to hold hers.

“how…?” the rest of the question goes unsaid.

“i know you.” he says it so matter of factly. he knows her, knows every inch of her mind, more than she does sometimes. “how else do you think i found you so easily?”

he knows her. knows she would have pretended to not be frightened. knows she was actually terrified out of her mind. and he found her.

sometimes, at least with him, to be known is to be loved.

Sammy has been in Sunny's care for seven years now (eleven years too short, if you ask him) and he still thinks it's funny when Sunny asks permission to give fatherly affection. It made sense at first, when Sammy was still skittish and untrusting of the idea that this security was permanent. Eleven-year-old Sammy still tiptoed around the new apartment, barely spoke, and had to be coaxed to eat before Sunny had finished his meal. The memory of his biological father, and of his life in England, hung over his shoulder like a malevolent spirit waiting for the right moment to strike his happiness down.

Over the years, that memory was eroded by the trust built up between new-father and son. Sammy knew that he didn't have to flinch at the offer of a hug, that he could tell Sunny when something was wrong. That he could even fuck up majorly and only face consequences relevant to his actions.

They sit in his half-unpacked dorm at CalTech, his temporary home for the next four years. They can hear Woori chatting up some parents in the hallway, his soft voice dominating a conversation about first-year internship opportunities with his family's company. Something about how they're always looking for new talent in biochemical engineering. Sammy reaches over and takes Sunny's hand.

"I'm gonna be alright," he assures, "it's only a two-hour drive from San Diego if you decide you want to see me."

Sammy can tell just by the look on his father's face that he does not think it will be fine.
