“San Lang?” Xie Lian’s voice calls from another room.

“Here, gege,” Hua Cheng answers immediately, but… something is wrong.

Xie Lian enters the room, his smile as bright as the sun.  “San Lang!  There you are.”

Hua Cheng opens her mouth, then closes it, hesitant to correct her beloved on anything.

“What’s wrong?” Xie Lian asks her in a gentle voice, coming over to gather Hua Cheng’s hands in his own.  “Are you okay?”

“I’m San Niang today,” Hua Cheng blurts out.

“Oh!” Xie Lian says, his voice still impossibly gentle.  “My San Niang.  Thank you so much for telling me.”

Hua Cheng’s anxiety disappears.  Of course Xie Lian would react that way.

“May I have a kiss from my wife?” Xie Lian asks, standing on his tiptoes.

Hua Cheng kisses him.

Hua Cheng relaxes into her husband’s arms.  “I’m glad you don’t mind this form,” she says softly.  “I feel more comfortable in it, sometimes.”

“I like all of my San Lang’s forms,” Xie Lian responds just as softly, nuzzling into the back of her neck.  Then he pauses.  “Should I call you… San Niang…?”

Hua Cheng squirms around until she can press their foreheads together and wrap her arms around his waist.  “I will always be your San Lang,” she promises.

Xie Lian rubs their noses together.  “My San Lang,” he repeats in a gentle voice, then tilts his head up for a kiss.

Their mouths meet, and Hua Cheng melts into her husband’s loving touch.
