On Erlang's mom, Lotus Lantern, and a neat little discovery
"Erlang's mom is Yaoji, JE's sister."
You can see that statement in literally every JTTW + adjacent fandom, both Chinese and English. Personally, it isn't as annoying as the "Nvwa is JE's daughter" thing, but does get a little tiring when everyone and their mother takes it as actual mythos.
So, in this post, I'll do a bit of digging, and trace the evolutionary trajectory of that claim.
Reading my Lotus Lantern Summaries first will be quite helpful, but if you haven't, I'll be linking to these posts when they become relevant.
The Start of It All
-As far as I know, JTTW novel is the first textual source that said "Erlang is JE's nephew". Specifically, in SWK's pre-battle taunts, he commented that "Hey, I heard JE's sister got chummy with Yang the mortal and gave birth to a son, is that you?" (JTTW Chapter 6)
-The same chapter also mentions that Erlang cleaved open the Peach Mountain to save his mom, implying she was imprisoned as a punishment for her forbidden relationship.
-The other roughly contemporary source, the Precious Scroll of Erlang, expanded on that story: here, Erlang's mom is Lady Yunhua (云花, literally "Cloud-Flower"), part of a trio of three sisters born of "Father Cloud" and "Mother Rain", who embodied the "Three Flowers", a Daoist internal alchemy jargon.
-She is also mentioned to be an immortal maiden of the Dipper-Ox Palace, where Queen Mother of the West resided. Erlang's dad, Yang Tianyou, is the incarnate of a "Golden Boy" acolyte, and they pretty much got insta-married after Yunhua revealed her true identity.
-In the Precious Scroll, Erlang's mom was also put under a mountain by SWK, and he went to QMoW to ask for his mother's whereabouts, pulling off the "carrying the mountains & chasing the suns" stunt on his way to rescue her.
-Pretty different from what you know, right? Here, Erlang was an only child, his mother was never explicitly said to be imprisoned under a mountain by JE's orders, and his father wasn't a run-of-the-mill mortal either.
-So what changed?
Erlang in the Premodern Lotus Lantern stories
-Well, the Lotus Lantern story cycle happened, and Erlang's own mom-saving story got copied over to his nephew Chenxiang.
-However, in all except one iteration of the Lotus Lantern tales, Erlang's parentage was never stated: this iteration is what I called Lotus Lantern 2.0, in which Erlang's own mom-saving story was canon too.
-It did leave out the "SWK put his mom under a mountain" part, though, despite lifting the name Yang Tianyou (and Lady Yunhua too, though her name in this story was Yuntai, "Cloud-Terrace") from the Precious Scroll.
-Similarly, the Lady of Mt. Hua/San Shengmu in all but one iteration of these stories wasn't punished by the Celestial Host, and Erlang putting her under a mountain was entirely his personal decision.
-In the one story that did, it was because she had whipped up a storm and ruined the mortals' crops while she was going after Liu the scholar.
-In fact, in all these pre-modern Lotus Lantern stories, San Shengmu and Liu's relationship was greenlit + Divinely Ordained by the Celestial Host.
The One TV Series to Change it All
-Yep, it's my childhood memory, the 2000s Lotus Lantern + Prequel shows that started the "Erlang's mom was Yaoji" thing!
-Here, she fell in love with the mortal Yang Tianyou after he sacrificed his own heart to save her, Erlang had an older brother named Yang Jiao who was killed together with his father on JE's orders, who also killed Yaoji via exposure to the Ten Suns after her release.
-That last part was probably inspired by the story of Nv Chou in the Books of Mountains and Seas, who was...this random sorceress/witch that got scorched to death by the Ten Suns.
-For a long time, I thought this was it: Erlang's mom being Yaoji was something the show-writers just pulled out of thin air, and entirely their original invention.
-Then I came across this little tidbit in Vol. 3 of the Tang dynasty text, 墉城集仙录...
Tumblr media
-Translation: "Lady Yunhua was the 23th daughter of QMoW and the sister of Lady Wang of Taizhen, and her name is Yaoji."
-The last character, 华, is different from the 花 of Yunhua in the Precious Scroll story, but these two characters could often be used interchangeably.
-It must also be noted that the similar name/title is just a coincidence, and mythos-wise, Yaoji's legends never converged with Erlang's mom-saving story at all.
-But yeah, the Lotus Lantern + Prequel show writers probably saw the two names, went "Won't it be neat if we merge them into a single character?", and thus the most influential "urban legend" of Chinese mythos/folklore was born.
(Honestly, with the way myths and folklore evolve, maybe this version of the story would become canonized too after a hundred years or so!)
Edit: Check out the comments——@fate-magical-girls has informed me that the "Erlang's mom being Yaoji" thing had an earlier origin in the 1987 Teochew opera 三姐下凡!
Seems like Lotus Lantern Prequel has taken a lot more inspirations from said opera, aside from that bit: Erlang's three-pronged, double-bladed spear being a three-headed flood dragon he subdued, for example.

Yesterday looking for "disciples of sun wukong" in Chinese with the translator I found this
There are 4 apprentices under sun wukong, namely: 1. The elder prince of yuhuazhou, 2. Chenxiang, the son of SAN shengmu, 3. Sun xiaosheng, 4. Sun ying, the shadow of the six-eared monkey.
The shadow of the six-eared monkey - - sun ying
The latter has something to do with the six-eared monkey. The six-eared monkey was the existence that left both sun wukong and guanyin left, and its strength is also very strong. Sun wukong's fourth apprentice is sun ying, said to be the shadow of the six-eared monkey. Before becoming sun wukong's apprentice, he was a real demon.
So I think I found inspiration for an au

Lotus Lantern: The Summaries, Part 3
Part 1
Part 2
Xinke Baolian Deng Jiumu Quanzhuan(or, "Lotus Lantern 1.0")
-This one follows the same story beat as the previous two, so I'll just list the differences + expansions.
-After the Third Lady of Mt. Hua saw Liu Junchun's poem, she went to what was presumably the local dragon king to borrow some shrimp and crab soldiers and chase the cheeky bastard down.
-Qiu'er still took the fall, but unlike in the Epic of Prince Chenxiang, here, his mom didn't even object to it. Chenxiang's dad also got in trouble for his crime, and had to be rescued later.
-Chenxiang's master was the Thunderclap Immortal, who taught him 72 axe moves and 73 transformations. No divine power-ups were involved.
-After learning all these cool skills, Chenxiang immediately went to save his dad, Qiu'er, and Qiu'er's mom, whisking them off to the safety of a temple.
-Erlang actually lost the shapeshifter duel, and had to go to FFM to ask Sun Wukong for help. The plan Wukong came up with?
1. Transform into fake Chenxiang
2. Pretend to rescue the Third Lady
3. Stuff her into a stone chest
4. Throw the chest into a well
5. Lure Chenxiang into the well
6. Cover the well with a stone slab, then set it on fire
-Yeesh.
-So the rematch became Chenxiang vs. Erlang + Wukong instead, and because this version's Chenxiang was OP as hell, Wukong was forced to flee back to his cave, while Erlang got tied up by a red sash that, despite the uncanny resemblance, wasn't Nezha's signature weapon.
-Chenxiang was ready to axe his uncle after freeing his mom, but the Thunderclap Immortal persuaded him to spare Erlang.
Xinbian Baolian Deng Huashan Jiumu Quanzhuan (Or, “Lotus Lantern 2.0”)
-This version is probably the closest to modern Lotus Lantern adaptations. First, Erlang's own mom-saving story is canon in this universe, and the story kinda started with a summarized version of the Precious Scroll of Erlang.
-After Liu Xi proclaimed his crush on the Third Mother, her attendants were pissed off on her behalf, and summoned a giant serpent to scare the mortal to death. On her way back, the Third Mother came across the half-dead scholar, and saved him with some magical elixirs.
-Thus began the start of her own crush on Liu Xi. After returning to her temple, she was quite mad at the attendant who summoned the demonic serpent, and was ready to execute him for his transgressions, before she was interrupted by the Old Man Under the Moon and Gold Star of Venus with a message that Your Relationship Is Divinely Ordained, and maybe spare the guy too.
-It wasn't the Peach Festival she couldn't go to because of her pregnancy, but Erlang's birthday. Sun Wukong arrived fashionably late to the party, and suggested a self-penalty of three cups of wine.
-Erlang was like "Dude, how can you still be late with your cloud somersaults? Three cups' too easy on you, how about a whole jar!"
-He'd deeply regret those words in about five minutes, for SWK got instantly drunk and started rolling around the bed, asking "Hey, y'all have some fine Birthday Wines, can I get more at the wedding tomorrow?"
"...Whose wedding?"
"Your sister's, of course!"
-Annnnd the cat's out of the bag. Erlang stormed out of Guankou and headed straight for his sister, who fled towards the Celestial Realm, hoping to seek shelter from their divine parents.
-When Erlang caught up to her, she used the titular Lotus Lantern to shield herself from the blows; however, it could not protect her against the Immortal-binding Rope, and soon, she was captured.
-Interestingly, the Third Mother did tell him the marriage was divinely ordained, to which he responded with "If it wasn't, you'd be dead, and even so, the Yang family code would not permit it!"
-Thus the Lotus Lantern was taken, and the Third Mother, thrown into a cave under the mountain and watched by the local Tudi god.
-Said Tudi god was not unreasonable, tho, and agreed to take baby Chenxiang to his dad. Soon, the kid grew old enough to attend the local school, where his schoolmates bullied him for not having a mom, with some even calling him a demon's child.
-Tearfully, Chenxiang demanded an answer from his dad, and when his dad finally yielded and told him the truth, he decided to sneak away to find his imprisoned mom.
-The same Tudi led the kid to her after he cried long enough under Mt. Hua; mother and son had a heart wrenching conversation through the rock gaps, until they were interrupted by someone's arrival.
-That someone was not Erlang, as they feared, but the Thunderclap Immortal, taking a leisurely stroll in the mountains. He took Chenxiang in as a disciple, and told him a way to free his mom: the same magical axe Erlang used to cleave open their grandma's mountain prison way back when, now stored in the Guankou temple.
-Then Chenxiang just...walked up to the temple gate while Erlang was out hunting, and asked one of the Seven Sages of Plum Mountain if he could borrow the axe.
-Funnily enough, the Sage in question was Yuan Hong, yes, the exact same as that white ape demon Yang Jian killed in FSYY, and he was like "Nope".
-So Chenxiang decided to take the sneaky route, transforming himself into four immortal maidens delivering peaches and wine into the temple, got Yuan Hong drunk, then turned into a butterfly and entered the inner sanctum. Just as he was fumbling with the locks, Erlang returned from his hunting trip, forcing him to flee.
-After questioning Yuan Hong, he decided to err on the side of caution and add eight more celestial soldiers to guard the temple. Chenxiang bypassed that security measure by turning into a little insect and crawling inside, but the axe was nowhere to be found.
-Suddenly, a flash of red light flew into the room and led him to a single chest, where the axe was stored. However, there was a new problem; the door was still locked, and Chenxiang couldn't take it outside, so he came up with another plan; transform into a rat and lure the guards into opening the door for some pest extermination.
-The guards inform Erlang, who saw right through it. He told them to keep the door shut, then transformed into a cat and entered the room, forcing Chenxiang to flee again.
-So Chenxiang was pretty disheartened, until he thought of a third idea: transform into his own divine grandparents, Yang Tianyou and Princess Cloud-Terrace, and call Erlang out on his bullshit.
-That filial piety card worked wonderfully. Erlang had no choice but to take out the axe and free his sister, at which point Chenxiang transformed back into himself and battled with his uncle.
-As the Third Mother watched anxiously from the side, who should show up but the Gold Star of Venus, delivering Jade Emperor's divine cease-fire order?
-Happy ending, yay. Sidenote, Erlang actually sighed after seeing the order, acknowledged Chenxiang as a formidable member of the younger generation, and picked him up and called him a good kid/baby ("乖乖!" "宝宝!" 叫个欢).

Lotus Lantern: The Summaries, Part 4
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Chenxiang Jiu Mu Cixiong Jian ("Chenxiang and the Male-Female Swords")
-As the last Chenxiang tale in the collection, my feelings about this one are...complicated. Some parts are not as dramatic, but it also has some interesting changes to the plot that haven't really been taken up by modern adaptations.
-Also, it's the only version where Erlang wasn't the main antagonist.
-Anyways: in the Tang dynasty, during the reign of Dezong, there was a poor orphan named Liu Xi. He hoped to change his fate through the imperial examinations, and while he was on his way to the capital, he came across the temple of the Third Lady of Mt. Hua.
-Just like in the Precious Scroll of Chenxiang, she was out attending the Peach Festival, and when Liu Xi asked about his examination results, her Jade Maiden attendant threw him two divination slips: "Majorly Auspicious" (上上) and "Majorly Inauspicious" (下下).
-The conflicting results annoyed Liu Xi greatly; he proceeded to write a poem on her temple walls calling her worship a sham, good only for cheating fools out of money. Upon her return, the Third Lady wasn't too happy about that, and whipped up a truly biblical storm while she went after the scholar.
-Trapped in the midst of it, a terrified Liu Xi lamented that he was going to die before repaying his dead parents and making them proud.
-Suddenly, the Gold Star of Venus showed up and blocked the Third Lady's entourage, and was like "You are destined to have two months of romance with Liu Xi, by the Jade Emperor's decree! Don't you remember?"
-Also, because the storm she summoned had damaged the crops of mortals, she had violated heavenly law and was due for punishment.
-Still, the Third Lady went on to commiserate her two-month marriage with Liuxi before abruptly revealing her true identity, for the terms of her sentencing had arrived and she'd soon be imprisoned inside the Black Cloud Cave of Mt. Hua.
-She gave Liu Xi a precious sword, told him to take it to the capital, then disappeared in a huge sandstorm, together with the mansion she conjured when they first met. Liu Xi, still disoriented, wondered if he had been charmed by a demoness for the past two months.
-After arriving at the capital, he tried to sell the Third Lady's sword for some money, but no one offered to buy it. Just as he was lamenting his fate, he was interrupted by the entourage of Minister Wang, who instantly recognized his sword.
-See, his daughter, Wang Guiying, had received a similar sword from the Old Mother of Mt. Li, who told her it was the "Female Sword" and she was fated to marry the man carrying the "Male Sword", which just happened to be the one Liu Xi was trying to sell!
-So Liu Xi attended the imperial examination, got very good results, and married Minister Wang's daughter. Some time passed before a Tudi god suddenly showed up at the family's front door, carrying baby Chen Xiang, his son with the Third Lady.
-Guiying was overjoyed and promptly adopted Chen Xiang into the family. Later, she also gave birth to a son called Qiu Xiang. When the two boys had both reached 12, they were sent to the mansion of the emperor's uncle-in-law for further study, and met the Imperial Uncle's 14 years old son, Cun Ge("Brother Cun").
-Chen Xiang, however, soon got into a fight with him, and when Cun Ge called him an illegitimate bastard, he killed the boy in a fit of rage. Just like before, he was forced to flee and decided to go to Mt. Hua to seek his birth mother, taking the Male-Female Swords with him.
-While he was busy getting lost at the foot of the mountain, the Thunderclap Immortal rode by on a cloud, saw him being miserable, and took him in as his disciple.
-After Chen Xiang mastered the Male-Female Swords, Thunderclap Immortal told him that, in order to save his mom, he must first go to his uncle Erlang's temple at Guanjiangkou, where the Mountain-Cleaving Axe was kept.
-So he went and was greeted warmly by Yuan Hong, head of the Seven Brothers of Plum Mountain who was also a monkey spirit. Unfortunately, Erlang was out attending the Peach Festival, and would be back in about...200 years.
-Chen Xiang really couldn't wait that long and pleaded to borrow the Mountain Cleaver Axe, please, he'd return it real quick! To which Yuan Hong replied that no one was allowed to touch the weapon without Erlang's permission, then resumed his patrol of the mountain.
-So Chen Xiang decided to just steal the weapon instead, and thought the best way to create an opening was…turning his swords into flaming dragons and setting Erlang's temple on fire. Yeah.
-After putting out the fire, the Plum Mountain Brothers found the axe missing, quickly put two and two together, and went to hunt Chen Xiang down. Chen Xiang then challenged Yuan Hong to a one-on-one fight, cleaved his horse in half with the Male-Female Swords, and dashed away to Mt. Hua to free his mom.
-Mother and child had a heartwarming reunion; Chen Xiang updated her on everything that had happened, just in time for the Plum Mountain Brothers and their army of divine soldiers to arrive. Since he couldn't fight his way out, especially with his mom by his side, Chen Xiang cried out the name of his master.
-Seconds later, the Thunderclap Immortal showed up and captured the entire divine army in his sleeves. Then the Gold Star of Venus also showed up, bringing with him the Jade Emperor's pardon for the Third Lady, before being interrupted by an angry Erlang.
-He was basically like "Kid, I'm not mad because you stole the axe, but why the hell did you set my temple on fire?! Also, where are my brothers and soldiers?" After the Thunderclap Immortal told him the whole story and released the Seven Sages + their army from his sleeves, however, he did calm down and go back to Guanjiangkou.
-After going on a quick detour to save his father, stepmother and half-brother from jail (yeah, they were thrown in prison for Chen Xiang's crime), Chen Xiang took the whole family into the clouds for a reunion under the the South Gate of Heaven, and all is well.

Summary:
It was originally not allowed for a god to fall in love with a mortal. However, San ShengMu (voiced by Xu Fan) in Heaven insists on falling in love with Liu Yanchang, a scholar in the world. Regardless of the objection of Erlang Shen (voiced by Jiang Wen), San ShengMu brought an artifact, the Lotus Lantern, to the mortal world in private with Liu Yanchang for life and gave birth to a son named Chenxiang. Seven years of peace and happiness passed quickly. One day Erlang Shen suddenly came down to earth and threatened the San Shengmu with a small aloe to hand over the Lotus Lantern and was crushed by him under Mount Hua. A beautiful family is also shattered. Chenxiang knew her life experience from the God of the Land, Tudi, and in order to recapture the Lotus Lantern and rescue her mother, he embarked on a arduous journey to find his mother. Years of training made Chenxiang grow into a brave young man, and under the guidance of Sun Wukong (voiced by Chen Peisi), he obtained a magic axe. In the end, the Lotus Lantern and Chenxiang merged into one, defeated Erlang Shen, split Mount Hua, and rescued his mother.

🏮🪷Lotus Lantern Rewrite 🪷 🏮
Liu Chen Xiang 🪷🏮

Emotionally intelligent, kind of doesn't talk a lot (unlike the 05 version haha) and on the run. I love his design the most, because I'm going to draw him often, I made his design simple, inspired by actual lotus color pallete
Xiao Yu 🦊🌸
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't want her to be a love interest because 1 this is a story about family and friendship, that's the one thing that makes me bleh, about 05 LL, Instead, I wrote her to be Chen Xiang's best friend and sister figure. Spoilers: They met by Xiao Yu mugging Chen Xiang. very femqueen of her
Ding Xiang 🗡🐃
Tumblr media
Again, no longer a love interest because boooring, she's also Chen Xiang's friend but she teases him by idk pushing him into lakes lmao. She still has the goal of becoming a legendary hero, which makes a good contrast to Chen Xiang being dismissive of most "heroic calls" Bc at the end of the day, he just wants to save his mom. He doesn't answer the call.
Ao Chun 🐉🍂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Youu just took his name" Yeah, and?
I was not the biggest fan of '05 Ao Chun's drip, like honey... Aren't you a prince...? If he's fush-coded in the original then he's a Golden Bass here, HE TOOK THE LONGEST TO DESIGN AND THE MOST LAYERS DAMN YOU AO CHUN
Anyway, he's like, my third favorite design? Second is Ding Xiang and fourth is Xiao Yu, (I'm sorry, I'm gonna do the most changes to her).
Anyway, I already have a blurry story to these characters. Their relationshios will be like 99.9% platonic 🫶🩷
I'm going to design San ShengMu, Liu Yanchang, Chang'e next
Erlang Shen and Sun Wukong too maybe in the future
Again, these are redesigns, I'm not fixing anyone, I'm not saying "oooh my design is better because blah blah" NO. These are just my takes on the characters, I removed their original relationships and Backstories and completely rewriting them because I want to! Not because I think I know more and did better, if I ever did or said anything offensive regarding the designs or personalities I give them, feel free to correct me so that I will reflect and do better.
At the end of the day, im just one person and sharing my silly little arts
Have a great day! 🩷🫶
