As Sanditon Season 3 was airing on Masterpiece PBS, actor Crystal Clarke sat down with writer, Felicia Henderson, to discuss playing Georgiana Lambe, the only Black character that Jane Austen wrote into her novels.
Clarke consistently delivers powerful performances as Georgiana in a period drama that openly explores Regency-era racism, tainted British fortunes, and the destructive effects of forced family separation on enslaved people. In our candid conversation between two Black women, Crystal Clarke shared insights for all actors, for production teams working with actors of color, and for any Sanditon fan interested in a deeper understanding of Georgiana.

On the MSATD News
I didn't have time to post a knee-jerk reaction (which those of you from the Downton days know I was apt to do - thank you to all my long term mutuals of my side blog for sticking with me through those days), as I saw the news as I was getting ready to head out for work and it's been… a bit of a day.
Suffice it to say… I am devastated. And my initial reaction was (well after cursing), that it should have ended with S4, but with a different (happier) conclusion. It's called Miss Scarlet AND THE DUKE for a reason. And after all that happened in S4… it really feels like… what was it all for?? Especially if they knew WHEN FILMING THIS?? "Goodbye for now" is NOT "goodbye forever." They really, really really fumbled this.
There's a lot of theories going around, and I will admit it's too hard for me to listen to Stuart's new interview, but going off what other's have said and the parts of the transcript I did manage to read… I just cannot feel like this was actually his decision unless there's something else going on with him (either in his personal life or maybe he has some secret role he's got, because supposedly he hasn't worked since he did ADR on S4). He's been the captain of the ship, and he has always been enthusiastic with discussing the show and had just great insight into playing William. It doesn't feel like he himself was ready to move onto other things (and that's not even how it's worded - some BS about how the show needed it him to be gone for ~longevity~ of the show), like I've seen with other actors are on shows (e.g. Dan Stevens). He still promoted S3 (which came out in the UK after they filmed S4), he still even promoted S4! He was an executive producer for S4!!! Nothing makes sense!
So if it's due to RN… why keep having the other characters say William was only going to be gone a year? Why bother to have the flashback? why bother to have him stay at at Eliza's to recover?? hell I'm surprised they just didn't keep in the coma then--
But really, why even bother to have Eliza write to him? Or have Ivy say what she said to her?? The time apart was supposed to be them looking at their options. They literally foreshadowed him joining Eliza at her agency upon his return. So… what happened?
If it was actually for personal reasons that Stuart left, he has a right to his privacy. But then they should have rewritten S4 to be the end then, since they knew all this time. I can't believe we are getting the full story on this, one way or the other. The more and more I think about it... I do think it was RN's doing though.
Just two nights ago I drafted up a whole meta extolling how one of the best things this show has done has been how they developed William and how he grew as a character. The progression he made as he not only accepted Eliza having a career but encouraging her. His mentorship of Fitzroy. How he came from nothing, from a teenager living on the streets, to become an inspector at Scotland Yard. But they have chosen to toss that all out the window.
Who knows, maybe S5 ends with Eliza deciding to go to New York. But it doesn't seem like they are handling this like Babington's absence in Sanditon. They will make Eliza quickly fall for someone else, and slap fans in the face who have been following their friends to lovers slow burn for five years (because we had to wait for S2 in the first place thanks to the pandemic). And what sucks is that we still got promo saying they are in love with each other. From Stuart, from Kate, from Rachael New herself. We have still gotten promo promoting the romance. Why not have them have a big fight then or something, idk. They gave us hope. And you know what Fellowes says about false hope.
So I'm just supposed to believe that William gives up on Eliza and doesn't return…? No, I cannot. As much as we hated the deaths on DA when they wrote out actors, at least those characters still died in love with their spouses. And while I'd still be foaming at the mouth in anger if they killed him off… yeah.
William's last lines of the show is a flashback including him saying "is it all worth it?" And the answer is… no it's not.

This beautifully beaded jacket was first seen on Ann Sothern as Flo Addams in the 1940 film Brother Orchid. It was used again in the 1942 movie The Big Shot, where it was worn by Irene Manning as Lorna Fleming.

Who is Theo James, and why is he naked all the time?
In White Lotus Season 2, Cameron and Ethan (Theo James, Will Sharpe) and their wives visit the Italian resort, and start flirting with every woman in sight, plus each other. In Episode 4, Cameron even says "I want to be inside you. I want to do stuff to you." But it is just queerbaiting; the two never lock lips. In fact, they hate each other.
You could probably figure that White Lotus, well known for its shocking homophobia, would never portray an actual gay romance. After all, it was created and written by Mike White, aka The Devil.
But Theo James is not personally homophobic; he has been interviewed an a dozen gay magazines, he wants to play a gay action-adventure hero, and he was in the running to play gay pop star George Michael. Let's check his previous work for gay roles.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2022) features (straight) lovers stymied by the guy's frequent involuntary time slips. Heterosexuals all the way down, although it does give us some nice rear and frontal nudity.
Sanditon (2019-22) is an adaption of a novel that Jane Austen left unfinished at her death in 1817. There is actually a gay character, outed in the second season. Theo plays Sidney Parker, whom focus character Charlotte love/hates with the "He's arrogant!" trope.
In the animated Castlevania (2018-21), Theo plays Hector, whose plot is propelled by that horribly cliched Dead Wife Trope.
Archive (2020)? Another guy with a Dead Wife, who he tries to recreate with an android. Yawn. I'm beginning to think that it will be tired cliches as well as heterosexuals all the way down. Are the butts and dicks worth the trouble?
Lying and Stealing (2019)? Caper romance between two thieves.
How it Ends (2018)? "In the midst of an Apocalypse, a man struggles to reach his pregnant fiance, who is a thousand miles away." That's actually the motive behind about half of the characters on The Walking Dead: "I'm looking for my wife!"
Before The White Lotus, Theo was most famous for the Divergent series, four movies set in a teen dystopia where people are classified according to their primary virtue: Candor, Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, and Amity. He plays Four, a Dauntless instructor who romances focus character Beatrice.
Ok, let's try Theo's future projects. In the upcoming The Gentleman (2024), he plays Eddie Halsted, who inherits his father's estate without realizing that it is the front for a drug empire. And he...falls in love...with...

Rose Williams on All the Happy Ever Afters
I think the ending was brilliant, and I think that’s what we all wanted. Being a show that inspired by Jane Austen’s work and inspired by characters that she formed in her mind, it was absolutely only right to give everybody their Austen endings. Because that’s the point, to be able to observe relationship dynamics. And I think part of Jane Austen’s legacy is how she put emphasis on really learning to love the other and searching for the best, rather than walking away. Her emphasis at the end of all of her stories was always on true love. And to be able to close out our version of Sanditon in that spirit is essential.
Ben Lloyd-Hughes on the Ending
In those two scenes on the cliff and the promenade, I think it was a huge sense of relief for [Colbourne]. He’s a man who, when we first met him, was clouded with grief and torturous memories. So I do believe that cliff scene is closure for him, but it’s also that feeling of lightness, of a weight being lifted off your shoulders and being able to breathe. It’s like he hasn’t been properly breathing for the two series, and it’s only at that very end that he could breathe. That was the characterization for him in a way—he could be so contained and so insular and such an introvert, that I tried at least to convey this sense of almost a different physicality of someone who could finally look up, and not look down, and breathe again, and hold his head high…
…I remember, we had an intimacy director on set about the kiss and how we were going to do the kiss, and [convey] that sense of relief and exhaustion, that it’s taken so many months and ups and downs to get to this point and that feeling of, “Well, this is a kiss, but this doesn’t have to be the defining kiss of our lives, because we’re about to spend the rest of our lives together.” So in a way, it’s more of a hug—it’s an exhausted falling into each other’s arms because we now don’t have to…All the previous kisses you see from us before were stolen, illicit kisses, either illicit for obvious relationship reasons, or illicit because of society. And now it’s not a stolen kiss—it’s a kiss of relief and happiness and almost the sense that we’re about to spend the rest of our lives kissing, so we don’t need to put too much pressure on this one.
Rose Williams on the Ending
They were really important scenes. I think Ben and our director Steve [Brett] and I, for the final scene and for that cliff top final moment, we all knew that those scenes were really important and I really, really cared about preserving them in this style of Austen as much as possible, and honoring this character Charlotte as much as possible, and having it be as precisely aligned to our shared vision as possible. With filming, you always shoot out of order, so while it would’ve been heaven to be able to shoot the final moment on the final day, it was the last week, I think, when we shot the final scene moment, which was really sweet.
I’ll always remember that day because it was the last day for Flora [Mitchell], who plays Leo. Her mom was there and we were taking pictures and I got really emotional. It was incredibly meaningful, everything you would imagine that it would possibly feel like, to be closing out this final chapter of a character and having the satisfaction and peace of mind. The time that I’ve most felt like this in my life—I will never forget the day—was when I read the final page of the last Harry Potter book, you know, that, “I’m having a happy life and it’s okay.” I got to experience that in the shoes of Charlotte, and I’m very grateful for it. It felt like closing out the final chapter of this person, and this experience of working with these amazing people.
Crystal Clarke on Georgiana's Happy Ever After
Love is always a part of it. It’s always a part of it, to have someone to share our lives with. I don’t deny that, but I think part of Georgiana’s happy ever after is also her having autonomy and her being able to fully discover who she is, the things that she loves, what she values, and where she comes from, as well. To be able to have familial relationships. Relationships, not just necessarily just with her mom, but the Parkers too—a sense of community around her, because when we met her at first, she felt isolated, and not by choice. So her happy ever after is the opposite of that, and that’s community and that’s love. And yeah, I think she got that. She got there.
Liam Garrigan & Sophie Winkleman on Samuel and Lady Susan's Happy Ever After
Liam Garrigan: I guess they would move back to London, that’s where their lives are. So it would be going back to London and then trying to figure out what that then meant. I always felt like that unexpected true love for Samuel and Lady Susan blindsides them both, but I definitely think that it would be strong enough to handle whatever life beyond Season 3 threw at them.
Sophie Winkleman: I don’t know really what Samuel’s romantic past is, but it seems like she’s been attracted to rather dazzling figures who’ve not really come up with the goods, so she’s probably quite wise and a bit calcified to men’s charms. But she knows this one’s a very good egg, and I think she’d let her guard down. I think they just feel like really good friends as well as lovers, and I feel like they just have a lot of fun together, which makes me think that it really would last forever. Because I think it probably is all about that. And I think they’d be very happy without children.
Liam Garrigan: Foot loose and fancy free—it’s all good!
Sophie Winkleman: Yeah, they’re sort of posters for not having children, either of them. I think they could have a very brilliant life together without all that conventional stuff. I think the future looks very rosy for those two. Probably the most, actually!
Liam Garrigan & Sophie Winkleman on Charlotte & Colbourne's Happy Ever After
Liam Garrigan: I think they’d have more kids, and Sanditon and Heyrick Park would become everything for them, I think.
Sophie Winkleman: I completely agree. I think they’d have millions of children. We’re the complete opposite—we’re just going to go to Paris and Rome a lot. But they’ve had their big old dark phantoms in their past, haven’t they? And I think they’ve learned to trust each other over their very arduous journey. So I think they have something really solid, as well. I think it would be a very fertile, lovely future for them.
Ben Lloyd-Hughes on Augusta's Happy Ever After
Augusta, obviously, is going to get her own spinoff series, so I’m excited to watch that—that’s what we used to joke. I imagine Augusta doesn’t settle down for a while. She really butt heads with Miss Charlotte Heywood at the beginning [of Season 2], and they seemed like chalk and cheese, like complete opposites. But as the series went on, it seemed actually how similar they are. They both wear their heart on their sleeve, and they’re both passionate, and intelligent, and romantic, and loyal. So I could imagine Augusta, without realizing it, taking Charlotte’s path and going on an adventure before she settles down, so to speak. And even going on to work, being a governess somewhere, or working at Charlotte’s school, and having her own adventures before finding the right person to love and marry.
Rose Williams on "A girl can be anything she chooses to be."
That scene was really important to me and had a lot of versions, and I was quite staunch on maintaining the final line. You can be whatever you want to be—you really can— I really wanted to say it, and I said it believing it, as Rose. It meant a lot to me that it ended on that line because I think the message from Charlotte, even beyond the romance, is to be and do and explore what you want to do as a girl—that’s what I care about the most, most, most. And the fact that she could follow her heart and be a mother, which she always wanted to, but at the same time, be working and inspiring this next generation.
Had Charlotte been in different circumstances, would she have ended up being a teacher? Maybe not. Maybe it’s her daughter who gets to go to London and become an architect, who has even more freedom to go and be what she wants to be. Maybe it’s one of her students who gets inspired by Miss Hayward’s descriptions of the world and it gives them confidence to leave the town of Sanditon and explore other places in England, or allow themselves to think that they can do what they want. And then hopefully the legacy would continue in that line. So that was something I held in my mind as well.
But Charlotte was the cycle-breaker and did a lot of groundwork for her daughter. That’s how I sat with it. The pieces that I really like are the bookends of the character: Seeing her for the first time with a gun—that was Ollie [Blackburn, the first director]’s idea, which I thought was fantastic, and we fought for. And then to end on a line saying, “You can be what you choose to be.” Those are the marker points, the bookends for me for the character.

Jamie To Star In Death In Paradise Spin-Off, 'Beyond Paradise' - What We Know So Far (UPDATED : 15th February 2023)

About The Show
Fans of Death In Paradise will be very familiar with the lead character of the series, DI Humphrey Goodman who previously was the DI in Saint Marie for the original series. For those unaware of the show, DI Goodman arrived in Saint Marie during the S3 premiere to investigate the murder of the previous DI. Humphrey left the series towards the end of series 6 and that has set up the premise of 'Beyond Paradise'.
Humphrey left the island of Saint Marie after developing a relationship with Martha Lloyd who he bumps into but knows from England. Though they spent time together on the island, Martha decided she wished to stay in England, leaving Humphrey heartbroken. However, when he returns to London as part of a case, he tracks her down and eventually decides he wants to be with her in England rather than returning to Saint Marie.
'Beyond Paradise' picks up Humphrey and Martha’s story as they navigate a new life together in the idyll of rural Britain.
Seeking a quieter life away from the stress of the city, Humphrey has taken a job as Detective Inspector in fiancée Martha’s hometown. However, they soon find that country life is anything but peaceful and Humphrey can’t help but be distracted by the town’s surprisingly high crime rate with a new, and very different, case challenging him each week.
A further synopsis was release on February 6th along with a new image.
A new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London. As they embark on their new life whilst temporarily living with Martha’s mum Anne Lloyd (Barbara Flynn), the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force. Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams, PC Kelby Hartford and Margo Martins, Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work…
Each week the team will face a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses.
As Humphrey gets stuck into his new job, he and Martha must also navigate life’s ups and downs, as faces from the past, the decisions they make and challenges of setting up life in a new town put their relationship to the ultimate test.
The Cast
Jamie will play Archie Hughes, a former partner of Martha's, "who looks like he's here to stay". In a recent interview with Sally Bretton, she explains that Archie steps in to help her with her resturaunt and becomes a partner in it. He owns the local Vineyard which the resturaunt will source their wine!
He will be joining Kris Marshall (Death In Paradise, My Family, Sanditon) as Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman, Sally Bretton (Not Going Out) as his fiancée Martha Lloyd, Zahra Ahmadi (EastEnders) as Detective Sergeant Esther Williams, Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls) as Police Constable Kelby Hartford, Felicity Montagu (Alan Partridge) as Office Support Civilian, Margo Martins and Barbara Flynn (Cracker) as Martha's mum, Anne Lloyd. Jamie's wife Kerry has a potential role in the show though this has not been officially confirmed.
Filming
Filming began on 1st August 2022 and took place around Cornwall. Cast and crew were spotted in Looe, Launceston and Tavistock.
Other Information
Founder and Executive Chairman of Red Planet Pictures, Jordan, will act as showrunner and lead a team of writers working across the 6x60 series. Jordan, Tim Key and Belinda Campbell will be executive producers for Red Planet Pictures, and Diederick Santer and Tommy Bulfin will executive produce for BritBox International and BBC respectively. BBC Studios brokered the co-production deal with Britbox International and will handle international distribution. The series is produced by Lindsay Hughes and directed by Sandy Johnson.
Release
The show will air on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and Britbox (US/Canada) starting Friday 24th February at 8pm.

Ohh today is 'missing/bashing Regé' day on the sub btw. I personally don't care about him but like really, get over it already🙄
We really must have this convo every other month I swear lmao 😴
Personally his attitude gave me the same vibe as Theo James leaving Sanditon. Sort of like the romance genre is beneath him or something after being embraced by the audience as a romantic lead (and the regency fuckboy comment shows how much respect he has for the role imo). Then again given how unprofessional Shondaland can be he may have had his reasons for leaving. I don't know or particularly care, I'm just tired of interviewers constantly bringing him up and his fans going after Simone, who wasn't even there when he was in the show. He's repeatedly said he's not interested in coming back, just let it go
But I liked Simon's character and was looking forward to seeing more of him and Anthony–plus his reactions to Anthony falling for Kate would have been hilarious. I don't care if it's RJP or they recast but I'd love to see his character back. I get why they didn't go for it in s02, it would have been too soon, audiences were too attached and hadn't yet become acquainted with Kate and Anthony as a couple, but after the success of Kathony it's about time. Otherwise they'll either have to phase out Daphne's character altogether or it'll just look weird having her there on her own all the time as if she's a single mother.
