Just got through rewatching Teo Lopez vs Sandor Martin and I don’t know where to start. God.
First off, hats off to Sandor Martin. That man won the fight. He’s a true spoiler and a phenomenal boxer. If you’re a southpaw (or an orthodox fighter who struggles with southpaws), learn the lead hook in open guard from this fight. Everyone always talks about how the cross is the punch to beat the opposite stance fighter but the real southpaw vs orthodox killer is the lead hook. Martin frustrated the crap of Teo with that lead right hook. Had him timed out the gate. Teo would try to collapse the pocket with these big leaping right hands and eat a right hook to the head for basically all 10 rounds. Martin knocked him down twice (ref only counted the first). Used that threat of the hook to land combos as Teo would get frozen up or try to come in swinging. He let Teo walk himself on to shots repeatedly. It was great. He’s an extremely well schooled boxer and deserves a lot more recognition. Screw the judges. That was Sandor’s fight.
I talk about confidence in fighting a lot cause it is a baseline necessity. It’s as important as actual technical skill and athletic prowess. Maybe more so. It’s the thing that lets you actually commit to fighting. You can tell when guys aren’t confident in there anymore. A lot of the time, it looks like a fighter shutting down and refusing to throw. Other times, it’s a fighter just repeatedly doing the same thing over and over and over again hoping for a different result each time cause it’s the only thing they feel comfortable doing. The ladder was Teo tonight. There wasn’t any sign of the guy who was able to intelligently pressure Lomachenko for half their fight, pivoting with him to cut off his entries and exits. This was a gunslinger who grew incredibly frustrated that the other guy wasn’t there to be hit clean. To be fair, it was a competitive fight. Lopez is still fast enough and a  hard enough puncher that he kept Martin honest and land. But it was infrequent. I’ve never really felt sorry for Teo. A lot of his mental blocks are self-inflicted through a slew of bad decision making and overlooking competition. But seeing him stare out into the audience after that 9th round like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world was kind of rough to see. Just walking around refusing to face the center of the ring or Martin. Him asking his dad after the fight if he still had “it” at only 25 years old? Oooof. That hit hard. That post fight reminded me so much of AJ’s after losing to Usyk again. Confidence shot. Frustrated as hell. Trying to convince themselves and everyone else that they’re still the man.
Last bit on judging. Obviously, the cards were crap. And while that was definitely some A-side, hometown style cooking on behalf of Teofimo, I do wonder how much of the score comes down to the new meta of boxing. For a long while, the “cool” thing was doing as little as possible while getting as hit as little as possible because the sport’s biggest star and P4P best boxer was Floyd Mayweather. You had a lot of guys who were punch and grabbers or minimalist. For the past like 6-7 years, the P4P list has been centered around guys who are highly active and/or like to come forward - Canelo, GGG, Roman, Usyk (doesn’t come forward but high work rate), Beterbiev, Spence, Crawford, etc.  Like if this fight had taken place in 2013, does Martin walk out with a win? Probably not, but something I think about when I see fights like this in boxing or MMA.

Young stars Keyshawn Davis, Jared Anderson, and Xander Zayas remain undefeated. NEW YORK— Junior welterweight contender Teofimo Lopez (18-1, 13 KOs) headlined in the big room at Madison Square Garden for the first time with a hard-earned split decision win over Spanish southpaw Sandor Martin (40-3, 13 KOs) in a 10-round final eliminator for the WBC crown. One judge had the bout 95-94 for Martin, while two others had it 96-93 and 97-92 for Lopez.   The former lightweight king was originally scheduled to fight Jose Pedraza, but a non-COVID-related illness forced the Puerto Rican contender to pull out of the fight. Martin immediately accepted the opportunity on three weeks’ notice.   Lopez initiated the bout in usual fashion by taking the center of the ring and trying to control the action with his speed and power. But at the end of the round, the two accidentally clashed heads, which evidently broke Martin’s nose and bothered him for the rest of the fight.   Martin’s quick footwork also began to cause problems in the opening minutes, especially as he used his lead right hand to lure Lopez in. In the second round, Martin was successful with that strategy and even dropped Lopez with a counter right hook.   Lopez then spent the rest of the fight trying to attack Martin and counter him when he committed to his punches. Martin was successful in preventing Lopez from positioning himself to land combinations, but at times he was also more concerned with evading shots than exchanging with Lopez.   As the fight ended, Lopez appeared to fight with more urgency while Martin seemed to think he had the fight won.   Lopez said, “It’s so hard to fight somebody like this when they’re running the whole time. Every time this guy committed, I countered and got him every time. He just ran the whole time. It’s OK, though. We got a lot to work on. But first off, I want to thank God for this. No matter what it was. I apologize to everybody tonight. This is not how we perform. But, listen, our dancer partner was running the whole time.   “Every time that this man wanted to commit, I was countering him and tagging him. That’s why he was running the whole time. I felt great overall. I knew he was tired. He didn’t want to commit. He was staying on his back foot and just running around the whole time. But it is what it is. This makes it look good. These guys are going to want to fight me now. More than ever. Now this is great. Now I can actually have a good fight.   “We would love to fight Josh Taylor. We would love to fight Regis Prograis. Or even a rematch with George Kambosos. My whole thing now is just staying focused and staying devoted.”   Martin said, “It was a surprise with the judges. I won this fight clearly. For one judge, I only won two rounds? Really? There were two knockdowns. The referee didn’t count one of the knockdowns. He missed all of his punches. That’s a masterclass of boxing. That’s a robbery. But that’s the sport of boxing.   “In the ring, I controlled all the action. The timing. The moments. In the ring, controlled everything with my will. Teofimo was overanxious. In the eighth round, his corner told him, ‘Hey, let’s do it. You could lose this fight.’   “It wasn’t just the broken nose. I only had three weeks of preparation. The broken nose was from an accidental headbutt. But I didn’t worry about this. But I knew that it would hurt every time he punched me there.  But he didn’t punch me. Every time he punched me, I said ‘Ow.’ But he touched me three times? Four times, maximum? Really? You win with this?”   Anderson Destroys Forrest in Two Rounds Heavyweight contender Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson (13-0, 13 KOs) retained his 100% knockout ratio by scoring a second-round TKO victory over Jerry Forrest (26-6-2, 20 KOs). Anderson captured the WBO International and WBC Silver USNBC titles with tonight’s dominant victory.    Anderson tried to box calmly, but a few hard left hands from Forrest, a southpaw, forced him to step up the action after the first 30 seconds of the opening round. Anderson then began letting his hands go at full force, nearly stopping Forrest when he had him on the ropes and landing a total of 54 out of 114 punches thrown within the first three minutes of the bout.   In the following round, Anderson continued his dominance and landed a hard right hand that forced the referee to stop the fight at 1:34 of the second round.    Anderson said, “Like my corner said, once I get hit it’s a whole different ballgame. I switch up everything. My mindset. How I fight. Everything. I try to come in cool and calm. I see everybody kind of was expecting him to go out early. I didn’t want that. I did want to get all the way warmed up. But once he did hit me, as ya’ll see, something flipped, and all I saw was red. The 114 punches came and we picked it up.   “I learned to keep my composure even earlier. It shouldn’t have to take me to get hit for me to be able to do that. But everything was alright once I started to adjust myself and get my feet up under me. I have been kind of off for a little second, but I definitely think I came back and made it better.   Zayas Ends the Year in Style against Salazar   Rising junior middleweight prospect Xander Zayas (15-0, 10 KOs) defeated Alexis Salazar (25-5, 10 KOs) via unanimous decision following eight rounds of action. Zayas retained his NABO 154-pound title and captured the NABF belt in the process.   There was no feel out process as Zayas began to land shots in the opening round. Salazar was able to connect in the following rounds, but Zayas was able to make the proper adjustments in order to allow his skills to dominate his opponent. The 20-year-old Puerto Rican prospect was especially successful in landing shots to the body, implementing a relentless attack to his opponents ribs in the final round in order to stop Salazar. Scores: 80-72 and 79-73 2x.   Zayas said, “Thank you to all my Puerto Rican fans who came out and are watching back home. This one is for you guys. Thank you for all the support and the love. I got to go back and see this fight. But they told me that I looked good. There were a couple moments where I let down my defense. But I give myself a nice B+.   “Little by little, we keep improving, keep getting better. But I feel like we can still work a little bit on everything. My distance. My punch output. My defense. My angles. Everything. I feel like we can improve on everything.” Davis Shines in Tough Test against Burgos    Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis (7-0, 5 KOs) passed the toughest test of his career by soundly defeating three-time world title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos (35-7-3, 21 KOs) via eight-round unanimous decision. Davis controlled the fight from beginning to end with his speed, power, and superior skills. Scores: 80-72 3x.   Davis said, “I felt great, man. He’s definitely a tough veteran. I was definitely trying to stop him in there. I had him hurt a lot of times, but he’s a veteran and knows how to survive. That’s what he did tonight.   “I would give myself an A, but I ain’t stop him. So, I give myself a B+. I felt like I was conditioned throughout each and every round. There were rounds where I was picking it up and some rounds where I was slowing it down just to catch him with a big shot. I give myself a B+ tonight.” Light Heavyweights: Irish southpaw Joe Ward (8-1, 4 KOs) scored an eight-round unanimous decision win against Frederic Julan (12-2, 10 KOs). Scores: 78-74 and 79-73 2x. Heavyweights: Undefeated Polish prospect Damian Knyba (10-0, 6 KOs) dominated Emilio Salas (7-4-1, 3 KOs) en route to a TKO win at 1:56 of the second round.   Junior Welterweights: U.S. Olympic standout Tiger Johnson (7-0, 5 KOs) scored a fifth-round technical knockout victory over Mike Ohan Jr. (16-2, 9 KOs). Time of stoppage: 1:29.

Is there a comprehensive list of actors GRRM cites as faceclaims or is it all in disparate blog posts?
Most of it isn't in blog posts at all, it's things GRRM's said at conventions or interviews. (Note for anyone going "Them, really?", check the dates and what the actor looked like at the time.)
So, a quick list:
Sandor Clegane: Ron Perlman
Cersei Lannister: Nicole Kidman
Jaime Lannister: Cary Elwes
Tyrion Lannister: Peter Dinklage
Tywin Lannister: Kurtwood Smith or Robert Duvall
Renly Baratheon: Adrian Paul (also for young Robert)
Arianne Martell: Apollonia Kotero
Nymeria Sand: Janina Gavankar
Daenerys Targaryen: Tamzin Merchant
And sources:
November 2000, fan con report: "Pearlman, from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, would be great for Sandor. Best guy for Tywin: the father on THAT 70s SHOW and who was the father of the kid, who shot himself, in THE DEAD POETS SOCIETY (I think I spelled it all right)."
December 2003: "...I have a few people in mind. I think Nicole Kidman would be good as Cersei. I always liked Ron Perlman, the actor I worked with on 'The Beauty and the Beast’. He would be great as Sandor Clegane. Ron is very good in heavy make-up and he’s also a big, strong kind of guy. He has a great voice that he can do all sorts of wonderful things with. I think he would be terrific as the Hound. For Jamie Lannister, a couple of years ago I would have said Cary Elwes but he might be too old now. I don’t know…"
c. 2006: "Myself, I'd love to see Tywin played by Kurtwood Smith (as in DEAD POET'S SOCIETY) or Robert Duvall (THE GREAT SANTINI)."
July 2006, fan con report: "On being asked about "the casting game" (picking actors to play the characters), he said the only one who he would definitely choose was Ron Perlman to play Sandor "The Hound" Clegane because of Perlman's aptitude for acting through prosthetics."
February 2007, fan con report: "When asked about ideal casting choices, he formally endorsed the idea of Nicole Kidman playing Cersei. He says she has the perfect look for her. But it would never work, because where are you going to find a guy that looks like her to play Jaime? I really got a kick out of that. He also said Ron Perelman would be perfect as the Hound -- but I am pretty sure I had hears or read that somewhere before."
date/source uncertain, but c. 2007: "Adrian Paul and I actually worked together once, long before the Dreamsongs audiobook. Wonder if he remembers. Back then he had a great look for Renly…but of course, that was twenty years ago."
February 2008: "Much as I *cough* admire Salma Hayek, I picture Arianne as looking more like Appollonia Kotero, as she was around the time of PURPLE RAIN."
November 2008, Elio Garcia: "George has said in the past that Adrian Paul is Baratheonish in looks (years ago he said he could see him for a young Robert or Renly)"
May 2009: "Playing Tyrion Lannister will be Peter Dinklage, who was almost everyone's "dream casting" for the role (he certainly was mine)."
August 2009: "I know my readers play the casting game. Well, confession time, so do I. Ever since I began A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE (way back in 1991, thought it wasn't until 1994 that I got writing in earnest), there was always a little part of me that would watch every television show and movie with one eye looking for actors and actresses who might work as my characters.
And so there I was, watching THE TUDORS (which I have VERY mixed feelings about, I confess), when Tamzin Merchant came on screen as the fifteen year old Katherine Howard, Henry VIII's fifth wife. I sat up at once, thinking, "Hmmm, she could be a good candidate for Dany.""
July 2011, Janina Gavankar: "George just told me I look like Lady Nymeria." (additional link 1) (link 2)

Interviewer: You have great foils for your characters, like Jaime travels with Brienne of Tarth. And there are other pairings, like Arya with the Hound. Do you consciously think of creating foils?
George: Well, drama arises out of conflict, so you like to put together two characters who are very different from each other and stand back and watch the sparks fly. That gets you better dialogue and better situations.

People act like Arya only wants vengeance and violence, but her initial reaction to Joffrey's death tells a different story.
Arya edged farther into the room. Joffrey's dead. She could almost see him, with his blond curls and his mean smile and his fat soft lips. Joffrey's dead! She knew it ought to make her happy, but somehow she still felt empty inside. Joffrey was dead, but if Robb was dead too, what did it matter?
- Arya XIII, ASoS
And also, her plan throughout all of ASoS was to get to Riverrun, until she found out her mother and brother were at the Twins and then she wanted to go there. After they were slaughtered, she thought about finding Lady Smallwood and Acorn Hall, but didn't know the way. She thought about being an outlaw with Gendry and the brotherhood without banners, but didn't think they wanted her around anymore since they never rescued her from the Hound. Her next plan was to go to Jon at the Wall. When she found the ship captain at the end of ASoS, she even requested to go to the Wall, but he was heading to Braavos, hence the only reason she ended up at the House of Black and White.

Panicking
Based on this request: : if requests are still open could i please request a sandor/reader where they escape kings landing together but she falls ill as they travel and he’s worried about losing her but is afraid to show it? she’s okay at the end and they confess ☺️💓
Here you are, lovely! I apologize for the wait! *Familiar characters are NEVER mine!*
Warnings: mentions of illness, cute fluff, it's a little short
Pairings/Characters: Sandor Clegane x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Sandor Clegane was panicking. Sure, he hid it well, but you’d spent enough time with him in recent months to know. He had absolutely no clue what to do here. That didn’t faze you much. You knew how to care for yourself. The only question was why? Why was he panicking? You’d certainly gotten closer since you left King’s Landing together, but surely he didn’t care enough about you that a little illness would make him so antsy. Did he?
Sandor’s POV
What the Seven Hells was he supposed to do now?! This was not part of the plan. You weren’t supposed to fall ill. Illness out in the wilderness almost certainly led to death. You couldn’t die. You couldn’t. Not when Sandor-
“Sandor?” your weak voice broke through Sandor’s racing thoughts. He turned his sharp gaze to you and you attempted a smile. “We should probably make camp somewhere. I need to sleep.” Sandor didn’t reply, but nodded as his mind went back to imagining every scenario and outcome of this. All of them: bad.
After finding somewhere to set up camp, you insisted on helping which Sandor tried to fight against. You argued back and forth until a fit of coughing led you to agree with Sandor and lie down for the night. Sandor stayed awake, keeping watch and listening to your labored breathing. He wondered if you would survive the night. Once you were asleep, Sandor sighed heavily and whispered, “Don’t die on me. The world’s taken so much from me and given me nothing…except you.” He spent the rest of the night hoping you’d get better.
*time skip*
You were finally feeling well again. It had been nearly a week since you’d fallen ill and both you and Sandor were beginning to feel like it would never pass. Sandor didn’t know who or what to thank. If the gods did exist, they had spared you. If they didn’t, then you were clearly tougher than anyone thought. An occasional cough still escaped you every now and again, but other than that, you were better.
However, for a few days after that, you didn’t speak much. You seemed to be lost in thought so Sandor didn’t push. You would talk when you were ready and, until then, Sandor would enjoy the quiet for once. He would end up wishing the quiet would last longer when you finally did speak one night.
“Sandor?” you asked and he hummed in response so you continued, “I heard you. The night you asked me not to die.” Sandor froze. You were not meant to hear that moment of weakness on his part. Not at all. Embarrassment worked its way through Sandor and almost instantly turned into anger. Something you picked up on almost immediately.
“Please don’t be embarrassed!” you pleaded, “I-I’m glad I heard. If I hadn’t, I don’t think you ever would have told me that you…care for me.” Sandor let out a frustrated sigh through his nose. You went on quickly, “And then I wouldn’t have the chance to tell you that I care for you too. Very much. I don’t know if I could imagine life without you in it anymore.”
Sandor pulled his horse to an abrupt stop, causing the animal to whinny. He stroked the beast's mane while staring at you. No one had ever admitted to caring for him before. “I don’t know if what I feel is love. At least not yet, but I am sure it’s the closest I’ve ever felt to it,” you confessed, your voice growing softer.
Nothing more was said, but Sandor felt himself blushing. The two of you carried on your journey after that. He would occasionally glance over at you and, when your eyes inevitably met, you would both look away quickly. You kept biting your lip, but Sandor could see the hint of a smile trying to fight its way onto your face. His face grew even hotter, if that was possible, but inside, Sandor felt a warmth he’d never felt before. A warmth that grew every time he looked at you. It was pleasant and foreign and Sandor liked it. It was a feeling the giant of a man would hold onto for the remainder of his life. Hopefully with you by his side.
(a/n: I hope you like it!)
