I'm watching the game Sanitarium (1998) and it's unfortunate that games with these absurd but fully realized and articulated plots can't really exist anymore. I'm sure some people are still totally into this kind of thing, but these days the "this makes no sense" lack of critical thinking is sooo prevalent

There's this psychological horror game from 1998 called Sanitarium where you play as this dude named Max who's covered in bandages and have to go on this little adventure through worlds and stuff.
Tumblr media
IT'S SO DAMN UNDERRATED IT'S INFURIATING (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Maybe if this were released today it would be as popular as Fran Bow or Sally Face but still, why hasn't anyone given this game the recognition it deserves ;-; Like sure some of the game's aspects don't exactly hold up well for today's standards but for the most part it ACTUALLY does. I can still play this without feeling held back like a lot of old games do.

The last light of summer has begun to fade from the evenings, and the first flames of autumn have kissed the leaves.
This means it's time to do my annual playthrough of Sanitarium (1998)

Album of the month - September 2022: A Far Cry From Dead - Townes Van Zandt
Tumblr media
You may ask yourself: who the hell can have an album made when he was very much alive where his name in the title is preceded by “The late great” and then have a posthumous studio album called A Far Cry From Dead? And the answer could only be Townes Van Zandt, of course, the man who self proclaims as being “all born to grow and grown to die” in the absolute jewel of songwriting that is Rex’s Blues (has a two chords song ever felt more all encompassing? I doubt it).
Always a living contraddiction, this title speaks as to how his contraddictions were destined to live on long beyond his death. Just to add even more tragic irony to the whole picture, the wikipedia entry for it reads: “It was Van Zandt's first album on a major label”. When I read that, I almost had to laugh. I can just picture it in my head how much that information would have made him crack up. He would have thought it was hilarious.
Recordings for A Far Cry From Dead were apparently made between 1989 and 1991, a relatively more stable period of his life, but the clarity and assuredness in his voice is still very remarkable for any performance from the latter part of his career. The added instrumentation (mostly recorded in 1998 by numerous musicians) is rich and elaborated in a way that never feels like it’s getting in the way of Townes and his delivery. They really seem to be working together to create a fresh, surprisingly “light” and pleasant sound that succeeds in bringing new life to many of these classic tracks. The tracklist is also a perfect overview of his entire career, with songs coming from each of his previous studio albums, all the way back to his debut. So Many a Fine Lady, one he rarely performed live ever since first recording it 1968, is given another opportunity to shine, along with other slightly lesser known gems like Greensboro Woman and Dollar Bill Blues. There’s no shortage of signature tracks on here as well, though, with staples like Pancho & Lefty, Waitin’ Around To Die, an impossibly cool and rocking version of To Live Is To Fly and the fourth(!) studio version of For the Sake of the Song, which he never ever seemed to let go of, almost like he felt it was his most quintessential work of all. Finally, we have the two originals, never before released, that bring me back to my original point: the stark contrast between the lucid hopelessness and despair of Sanitarium Blues and the cheerful, playful and relaxed nonsensical atmosphere of Squash that closes the album.
All in all, it’s a beautiful testament of the many different sides of his musical personality as well as a great showcase for his entire catalog. More than that, it’s an album full of life and hope and love, things he proved time and time again we can find even in the darkest of circumstances.

First Impressions: Sanitarium (1998)
Ok, i wanted to do this instead of liveblogging it, or waiting til i’m done.
This is gonna be on the style of my more idiotic rambly posts, like the one about Devil May Cry, or the one about Nyanners, so I’m putting it under the cut so nobody has to scroll forever through it.
Sanitarium is a point-&-click style horror game from 1998. You’re thrown directly into the action with only the help of a short cutscene showing a car crash to show you what’s going on.
Your dude then wakes up in a poorly-kept and falling apart insane asylum, with bandages on his head. He doesn’t know who he is, how he got there, or anything prior to this moment. He does seem to have a relatively level head on his shoulders, though. Especially in contrast to the… other patients. One of whom pulls off his pants and jumps to his death when you approach him.
For anyone familiar with this game, I have gotten as far as chapter 2, and opened the school building.
This game is… Fucking weird. It’s completely disjointed, and bizarre. There’s no sense of internal logic. Or. There is, but it’s entirely localized to each conversation you have, each room you go in. It’s like Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, but wrong. At the same time, there… Are a few through-threads. Thematically at least. So far, i’m seeing Religion, Stained Glass, and… Pumpkins?
At the same time! I know how stories work, i’ve spent a fair amount of time on TVTropes. I would consider this my field of expertise if nothing else. I can tell when a story is poorly put together. I like to think I have a good instinct for that.
And so far? None of my trope senses are going off. Even with the patients, nothing raised any alarm bells. The other patients are delusional, sure, but none of them are harmful or threatening. (Which is refreshing given that mental health is a serious topic, and having played Outlast, where it was just like “oh god crazy people how scary!”, i was a little apprehensive about this game too.)
So far, the typical “crazy person” beats are… Weirdly absent. Nobody’s mentioned Aliens or Conspiracy theories. So I think… Maybe this is all somehow relevant.
On another note, the art style and voice acting lends itself to being weird to. Granted, this game’s from 1998, so neither are going to be amazing, for a 2.5d-sometimes-3d, fully voice acted point-&-click game. But what strikes me is not… That it’s bad, neccisarily. Well, ok, the voice acting is bad, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not so bad as to be bothersome and more just… Feels off.
In short. This is gonna be interesting, one way or another.

Sanitarium by DreamForge Intertainment is an old-fashioned point-and-click exploration adventure from 1998, centred around a psychological horror tale as you play an asylum patient unable to remember anything about surviving a car crash, and visiting surreal worlds populated by mysterious children and ancient gods and ghosts of your past, as you attempt to figure out what's going on by talking with NPCs, triggering flashback scenes, and solving puzzles by using items.
