First Flight

First Flight

Summary: Gideon lets his little brother climb a tree. He doesn't expect his brother to jump out of the tree too.

The tree was a Flowering Dogwood.

Gideon knew this because his siblings had asked him last week after church while waiting for their parents to finish their goodbyes to friends and the gossiping old ladies. Gideon had winked and said it was a secret, but then spent the rest of the week investigating what kind of tree this particular one was.

Pale-green, almost white from a distance, four-petaled flowers with green clusters in the middle. Finally toothed leaves which change color in the fall weather. Deeply grooved, reddish-brown bark.

It was a Flowering Dogwood.

At least.

That was what Ms. Stacy of the Youth Group said when Gideon broke down and asked her.

But nonetheless, Gideon's siblings gazed upon him in awe as he told them about this secret tree a week later.

"I'm going to climb the secret tree," whispered Sam as he turned his eyes back to the now orange-red leaved Flowering Dogwood.

Sam had gotten into the habit of climbing things. Not that Gideon completely kept track of the different phases his younger siblings went through, but this phase had stood out in particular for how long it had gone on.

Sam would climb the stairs on the wrong side of the railing, only to be thwarted by one of their parents a few feet up. They would now find Sam on the top of a bookshelf, sprawled out like a cat with the latest comic whenever they went to the library. Apparently, Sam started to sit on top of his desk at school during lessons too.

Gideon probably should tell Sam to stop. But he saw Sarah excitedly nodding in agreement and Gideon really couldn't say no to his little brother.

"Go for it," said Gideon as he watched Sam run over to the tree without his permission.

Sam climbed much more proficiently than Gideon ever could up the sixteen-foot tree, skittering almost halfway up before taking a break.

Sarah, for her part, seemed in awe of what Sam had just done. She gazed, agape at Sam six feet off the ground before she blurted, "You're so good at that!"

"Do you want to be a rock climber or something?" asked Gideon, wondering if he should see if there's a gym nearby for Sam.

"No," said Sam, and in a horrifying twist, turned to face outward to his siblings, "I want to be a bird!"

Gideon wasn't sure what he expected a six-year-old boy to say. And while Gideon sprinted over to try to catch Sam, or possibly just buffer the kid's fall, he couldn't help but notice how happy Sam was in the air.

The look of pure joy on Sam's face as he soared.

And Sam had been happy before, but he never looked this happy. This was what all the climbing was about. And Gideon had just given Sam his first opportunity to actually jump.

Gideon felt a little less happy about the situation when all fifty pounds of Sam fell on top of him, toppling them both to the ground.

Though.

Gideon got over it quickly once Sam started laughing maniacally. A little boy filled with giggles and adrenaline.

"Again. I need to do that again," said the adrenaline junkie in the making before Gideon wrapped his arms around Sam and kept Sam in his clutches.

"Nope. Let's figure out a safer way for you to fly," said Gideon, wondering just how he was going to do that before settling on, "You can jump out of the tree again next week."

And yeah, there were people watching the three of them now. The old ladies were gossiping as they always did. Gideon could hear their parents walking over and asking what happened. But all Gideon could focus on was the look of joy Sam had as Sam gazed at that Flowering Dogwood, probably thinking about that first flight.

You woke up to the sound of the front door slamming shut, “Buck?” you half whispered, not expecting a response but still trying. You rolled over on your side still hoping to find Bucky, instead, you spot a note on Bucky’s pillow,

‘Called out on a mission, didn’t want to wake you, I’ll be back tonight, Love you Sammy’

You sighed and rolled back over, it was too early for this, you knew Bucky had responsibilities, he was out saving people. As Captain America you completely understood how important that was, but that didn’t stop you from missing your boyfriend. It felt like you were spending less and less time together, one of you always being on a mission, or called into a meeting with some government official trying to control how you work. Especially recently, Bucky had just gotten back from a 2 week long mission yesterday and now he was gone again.

You slept for a couple more hours before deciding you should probably start your day, you had nothing planned, thank god. You were exhausted, saving the world was rewarding but it really took a toll on you, both physically and mentally. You quickly threw some breakfast together and headed to the garden to eat, things were quiet outside, peaceful, just what you needed right now.

You picked up your phone and scrolled through the notifications that had gathered through the night, texts from Sarah first, she had sent you a video Cass and AJ had made which made you laugh. You missed them, we really need to go back home and visit. You started to type a reply but stopped halfway deciding it was too much effort, slightly mad at yourself for not being able to do something as simple as responding to a text. You didn’t finish your breakfast, instead you headed back inside, you had full intentions of doing something productive on one of your rare days off but as the day went by it was clear that wouldn’t be happening.

It was around 3pm when you decided to give up on the day and return to your bed, Bucky wasn’t back yet and you really missed him. You hated yourself for it but even though you missed him, part of you was dreading him coming home. You loved him, you really did but you still felt like you had to be perfect for him, you always tried your hardest to be okay around him. He had his own struggles, you didn’t want to load your problems onto him as well. You felt a tear fall down your cheek as you thought of this, you didn’t want to lose him, which is what you thought would happen if you showed him any signs of weakness. What you didn't know was Bucky would never leave you, he loved you too much. You really were his everything. Without realising, you laid in bed and cried for hours. You didn’t hate your life, you just hated feeling this tired all the time.

The only thing bringing you back to reality was the sound of the front door slamming again, “Sam I’m home” Bucky shouted through. It took you a few seconds to process before jumping out of bed and trying to wipe your face, you wanted to seem like your ‘happy’ self again. You try to make the bed seem presentable, like you hadn’t been in it all day, when Bucky walks in.

“Did you get my text? I brought food home fo-” before Bucky could finish you squeezed yourself into his arms” “I missed you too” Bucky says chuckling to himself.

“Sorry” you reply, pulling away, embarrassed to be showing how vulnerable you are feeling. “Don't be sorry baby, come here” He pulled you back into his arms, and for a split second you wanted to let everything out, show Bucky how you were really feeling but you convinced yourself otherwise. You need to be okay right now, he needs you, was continuously running through your mind on a loop.

“Come on, let’s go eat, I got your favourite”, you force a smile on your face as he leads you through to the kitchen. “Thank you Buck”, you did appreciate the food, but the thought of eating made you feel nauseous, even though it was nearing 10 o’clock and you hadn’t eaten since your half-breakfast. “How was the mission?” you asked, playing with the food on your plate, which bucky notices.

“It was fine” he wasn't trying to be blunt but he was distracted, “is your food okay? We can swap if you want, or I can make you something else?”

“No it’s good, sorry I’m just not really hungry” you try to keep your forced smile when you look up at him. “are you okay?, are you sick?”

“No, I’'m just tired Bucky” you snapped at him, you knew he wasn’t doing anything wrong, but you were getting frustrated. You were just so tired.

“Oh, what did you do today?” Bucky replies.

“I didn't do anything” you snap, Bucky probably thinks you're mad at him, it isn’t his fault you're feeling like this. The way you said it came across harsh, which you didn’t mean. “I’m sorry” you put your head into your hands, to hide the tears trying to force their way out, “I’m just gonna go to bed, thank you for the food, I’m sorry” You rushed away from him, avoiding eye contact as best you could.

Bucky was confused, he couldn’t help but think he did something wrong. He waits a few minutes before making his way to your room. “Sam?”, he feels the need to knock, even with it being as much his room as it is yours. “Can I come in?”

“It’s your room too Buck, you don’t need to ask”

“I know, I just didn't want to- “ he stops mid way through, the truth was he didn’t really know why he knocked. “Can we talk?”

You sit up and wipe your tears away, it’s time for you to be okay, Bucky needs you. “What’s wrong, are you okay?”, worry seeping in, you had been focused on yourself and didn’t notice if anything was wrong with Bucky. This is why you needed to be okay. Bucky needed you to be there for him.

“Sam, I’m okay I promise, I want to talk about you” he paused for a few seconds before continuing, “I’m worried about you Sam”

You just looked at Bucky, you didn’t know what to do. “Me? I’m fine, I’m just tired”

“Sammy, you can talk to me about anything you know, I wanna be here for you” Bucky looked at you with his eyes full of worry, you hated yourself for doing that to him.

“I’m sorry Bucky” Deep down you knew you had nothing to apologise for, but you couldn’t help yourself from saying those words. “I just, I don’t even know, I’m just tired, all the time”

Bucky didn’t respond, he knew this was hard for you and he wanted you to open up at your own pace. “I just feel like the world is moving so fast and I can’t catch up.” You looked up at him, into his blue eyes, hoping he would say something. He’s so disappointed, I knew I should have done better. Guilt started to overload you, “I’m sorry, I know people have it so much worse than me. I know I shouldn’t feel this way, I wish I didn’t.” You look into Bucky’s eyes, he hates me. There was nothing but love and care for you in his eyes, yet you were still convinced he hated you. You couldn’t look into his eyes for any longer, the feeling of guilt taking over you.

“Sam” Bucky tries to get your attention but words keep spilling out of you, it was like you couldn’t stop.

“And I know things aren't easy for you Buck, I’m sorry for being like this. If I could do better for you I would, I promise I want to-” Before more words could spill out Bucky manages to grab your attention,

“Sam, it’s okay, you’re okay.” You start to turn away, embarrassed, you didn't show this side of you to anyone. Bucky puts his hand against your cheek, guiding your face towards his. He places a kiss on your forehead before looking into your eyes. “You don’t have to pretend with me, you are allowed to have bad days. I’m here for you Sammy”

You melted into his arms, letting out all your emotions, Bucky trailed his fingers around your back in a circular motion. You laid there for what felt like hours, you could feel all of your worries lifting away, you didn’t have to pretend anymore. For the first time in a long time you felt safe, loved, like you weren't a burden in Bucky’s life. This was just what you needed and Bucky knew that.

You had laid there so still Bucky was half convinced you had fallen asleep. “Sam? You awake?” You couldn’t bring yourself to answer so you just nodded. “You know I love you right?” Bucky had hoped you knew how much he loved you and how much you meant to him, but the truth was, you didn’t. You hadn’t realised how long you left him in silence after asking his question before he shifted beside you to look at you. “I really do love you Sammy”

It brought a slight smile to you hearing him say these words, “I love you too Buck, I’ll be better tomorrow I promise” Whilst you knew you couldn’t promise to be better, you would do everything you could to make it seem that way. “Sam, you don’t have to be better, you don’t ever have to pretend to be okay.”

“I don’t want you to leave”

“I will never leave you Sammy”

“Promise?”

He brings his face closer to you and brushes his nose against yours, “I promise.”

Down in the Hole (Some Emotions Are Hard to Hide)

Sam helps Bucky deal with both physical and mental/emotional injuries while they wait for rescue.

“I told you not to follow me!” Bucky growled. “Now we’re both down here in this goddamned pit.”

It was dark and damp and cold, with barely enough room for the two of them. “Could be worse,” Sam replied, trying to keep his voice light. “At least there weren’t pointy sticks at the bottom.”

“You think you’re funny.” Bucky shifted slightly, making a muffled grunt as he did. Sam knew how insanely high his partner’s pain tolerance was; something was wrong.

“Let me check you over.” Since he couldn’t see a thing, Sam started patting his hands around, checking for blood or broken bones.

“I’m fine,” Bucky mumbled between gritted teeth.

“Bullshit.” Sam had just discovered the problem; Bucky’s left leg was twisted underneath him in a direction legs aren’t generally designed to go. Sam would bet fifty dollars it was a torn ACL. “Okay - we need to get this leg of yours straightened out.”

“Where am I gonna put it, genius?” Bucky shot back, grunting in pain again as he attempted to follow Sam’s instructions. “Not like we got a ton of space here.”

“Try sitting across the widest part of this pit.” The two of them shifted around in the pitch dark until they were sitting more or less perpendicular to one another, giving Bucky just enough room to fully extend his leg across Sam’s lap. “Better?”

“Still hurts like hell. Where’s that drone of yours, anyways?”

“Redwing was doing reconnaissance outside the compound and I lost signal,” Sam explained. “Let me see if I can reconnect.” Sam powered up his wrist screen and sent a ping. In the dim red light, he could almost see Bucky’s face, pale and drawn. His breathing had quickened as well.

“We’re gonna be fine,” Sam said, trying to sound more confident and reassured than he actually felt. “Even if I can’t get Redwing back up, Torres knows where we are and he’ll call for backup if we’re gone for too long.”

“I know,” Bucky replied, his voice going tight. “Just – keep talking.”

“All right. Hey, did I tell you A.J. is going out for the basketball team?”

Sam rested a hand on Bucky’s knee to help ground him as he recounted the latest family stories Sarah had shared, along with gossip about the neighbors that Bucky couldn’t possibly care about.

But Sam remembered Steve’s description of the damp, cold Siberia base and the cylinders that housed the Soldiers during their cryo sleep. Whatever he could do to chase away those kinds of memories, he was all too willing to do.

It didn’t take long before Redwing led the extraction team to their location. After dropping down a temporary splint, they rigged up an emergency bosun’s chair to lift Bucky out of the pit, and Sam followed.

Using a crutch carry, Joaquin and Sam helped Bucky make it back outside; he wouldn’t let anyone else in the team do it. Sam griped good-naturedly the whole time, mostly as a distraction. As they eased him into a seat on the chopper, Bucky grabbed Sam’s hand.

“Thanks, pal. I owe you one.”

Sam shrugged. “Who’s keeping count?”

I imagine Someone Else as a Hellcheer vignette-style fic based mostly in Chrissy's POV where she's learning not to live for Someone Else. Not her mother, not Jason, not her friends, and not Eddie. I'd want the climax to be Chrissy either getting accepted to or starting a program her mother said she'd never get into, one Jason said was just too big for her, and one that Eddie and her found family are so goddamn proud of her for her hard work getting into.

Moonshine! I would love this one to be a Bucky/Sarah (Fleur de Louve, if you will) 1920s Prohibition AU where Sarah Wilson owns a speakeasy on the bayou and slowly falls in love with her moonshine supplier, the mysterious Great War Veteran Jim "Bucky" Barnes. Sarah invites him to stay after his delivery every week, the relationship shifting from slightly distanced business associates to friendly to flirtatious over time, and of course the declaration of love comes the one night Bucky decides to stay and watches Sarah sing.

The first thing that comes to mind for Pinky Swear would be a single parents/no powers AU for Shieldshock kind of based on Sleepless in Seattle where Steve's daughter and Darcy's son become pen pals from New York to San Francisco and they promise if their mom and dad each don't find a new husband/wife in the next year, they'll meet somewhere in the middle and get them together.
