Star Trek III: The Search For Spock thoughts!

Wow Wrath of Khan left us on a total cliffhanger so I’m glad I can just watch the next movie instead of waiting (checks google) …2 years. Goddamn. Anyway!

- “Why would you do this?” “Because the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.” JUST SAY YOU LOVE HIM smh

- They’re just staring at each other for a solid couple of seconds which I- personally - think should have been utilized by Spock going to kiss Kirk

- Leonard is so happy to have Spock back

- Group hug ! :3

That was pretty good. I enjoyed a lot of the McCoy scenes and the David and Saavik stuff. I like in the end credits they finally include Leonard Nimoy’s name because in the opening it would have been spoilers to have all the ‘as Spock’ actors names. Welp onto the next.

Omg sorry I totally forgot about this lol it was lost in my drafts. Thank you for the ask!!

How I feel about this character: I LOVE M'Benga. I've loved him since tos even though he barely had a role 🤣 I don't know, I just thought he was such an interesting character, like he'd studied on Vulcan and had a good sense of humor and iconically slaps Spock out of his sleeping trance LOL. I really enjoyed him in s1 of snw too! (Haven't seen s2 yet) I'm so happy he finally gets to be fleshed out as a character 🥺💞

All the people I ship romantically with this character: uhhhh I actually don't think I have any romantic ships with him lol, maybe that will change with more snw watching 🤣

My non-romantic OTP for this character: him and chapel 💞

My unpopular opinion about this character: ummmm ken your being out of touch with fandom is showing lol. It's not really an opinion but after snw was announced and before I saw it, I hc'd that he started as a junior doctor on Pike's enterprise and then became xo when McCoy came on. I was actually super surprised he was made cmo in snw lol, but happy too! I think it's a nice role for him, though I'm curious to see if they tackle why he's xo in tos.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: M'Benga is like the polar opposite of McCoy in terms of outward demeanor and I think it's SUCH a missed opportunity that we never see them interact besides briefly and professionally!! I think they would have an amazing rapport and I wish we could've seen it. Instead I will daydream about it lol. Also haven't seen s2 yet, but I would've LOVED to see him and pike actually being friends.

a headcanon fact: His time on Vulcan was sponsored by Sarek and he got to know him pretty well while he was there. Amanda insists he drops by for tea every time the Enterprise stops at Vulcan.

Another idea I'm still stuck on is the AU with La'an and Spock being exes and meeting again on the Enterprise with their old feelings rekindling.

I know, I know, the idea sounds like a rehearsal of Riker/Troi but their love story is iconic so it's fine to get inspired by it.

Anyway, back to my stupid AU idea...

La'an and Spock are going to Starfleet Academy together (I know La'an is technically older, but Spock is smarter so it works out in my head) and they fall for each other, but it's neither the right place nor the right time with both of them graduating and being assigned to different ships on opposite sides of the galaxy. Additional to circumstances being far from easy, La'an, still suffering from the Gorn trauma, is not ready yet for a long-term commitment and Spock is being pressured into becoming more like a real Vulcan by Sarek and Vulcan society like... going to Starfleet is bad enough in their eyes, but dating an Augment descendant?

Flash forward to La'an and Spock meeting again on the Enterprise. Things look even less idle with both of them working on the same ship (chain of command and all that stuff) and with Spock being engaged now. There's a lot of tension and bickering at first, but no matter how they try, they can't stop the old feelings that have never really gone away, from reemerging and getting even stronger, not when they have to see each other every day and have to work together so damn closely...

... oh all the delicious drama and tension and angst and agony and jealousy and love confessions under the most dire circumstances...

10. TKO (Knock You Out)- Bubbles: who leaked the tape of my best friends and I putting on a show for our moms in the early 2010s?

9. Bye Bye- Barbados: if there is two things I like about Barbados, that’s that they sing in Swedish, and Magnus Carlsson. This song has neither.

8. Genom Eld Och Vatten- Sarek: I know this is a big fan favourite, but it just sounds really chaotic to me. I will be honest- I could find positive things about it, but it sounds so cacophonous that I cannot focus on anything else. 

7. Crazy In Love- Jill Johnson: honestly this song is not even that bad, it’s quite solid and was clearly written by someone who knows what they’re doing, and it’s enjoyable too... But you know when there are certain things that make you so angry for no reason at all? Like, they just make your blood fucking boil? This is it. 

6. Aqua Playa- Afro-Dite: this is really good- they’re always charismatic and so entertaining to watch, perfect vocals and amazing harmonies, catchy and fun song. The issue is that this came directly the year after they won with Never Let It Go- and damn, that song is AMAZING. It’s inevitable to compare the two and it’s inevitable that this one will lose. 

5. Maria- Östen Med Resten: when I tell you I am obsessed with this? They sing in Spanish and Swedish, are dressed like mariachi, and have this incredibly fun song that has absolutely no reason to exist but to be entertaining? Bye this is everything I love about Melodifestivalen. 

4. Hela Världen För Mig- Sanna Nielsen: I never cared for this until I actually sat down and took some time to listen to the whole song and actually focus on it. Nice, very optimistic sounding ballad, definitely sounds like something out of a Disney movie. I always found it a bit basic and repetitive, and thought that despite the nice melody and good structure it doesn’t really have anything setting it apart- but I’ve started thinking Sanna’s stunning vocals almost (almost) make up for it. Her crystalline voice and clean technique fit a song like this perfectly, and her runs and variations actually add something interesting and captivating to it. 

3. Let Your Spirit Fly- Pernilla Wahlgren & Jan Johansen: I find this song very similar to Hela Världen För Mig, in the sense that with the simple and positive lyrics, clean vocals and sweet melody it feels like something you could find in a Disney movie. I think what makes me like this one a bit better is mostly the fact that it is a duet- I think duets, especially male-female, are almost always a winning choice because having two people singing instead of one is the simplest way to introduce variation and prevent the song from being plain and boring. Here, in particular, the contrast between Pernilla’s light and soft voice, and Jan’s more low and raspy one, works really well in making the song dynamic. 

2. Give Me Your Love- Fame: I don’t know what to tell you other than this is a bop. 

1. Not A Sinner Nor A Saint- Alcazar: I-C-O-N-I-C. No bye this is perfect and the fact that it didn’t win makes me absolutely LIVID. First of all, so iconic that Magnus Carlsson just ditched his former band and competed straight against them, coming in third while they got last? Shit that only happens in Sweden and that’s why I love this country. Brilliant structure with the piano intro and soft harmonised vocals, then more upbeat instrumental intro, I love the alternation in the verses with Andreas’s part/Magnus’s part/Tess and Annika’s part. If I have one complaint, it would be that I wish Tess and Annika harmonised their part, like they did in later concerts after Lina replaced Annika- with them both singing the melody it sounds a little flat. But this song is so well-written and exciting, with overall great vocals and harmony, amazing structure and it is just so iconic, 10/10 should have gone to Eurovision.

Also, this is just a funny bit of trivia, but one of the mad scientist characters from Batman and Robin (Dr. Woodrue) was played by Jason Glover. Glover later went on to play the father of the main villain in Shazam. He seems to pop up in the DCU quite a bit.

That is so cool! It's like those actors who show up playing different roles in Star Trek, lmao.
