Exclusive Cover Reveal: Murray Out of Water by Taylor Tracy
Today on the site, I’m delighted to welcome Taylor Tracy to reveal the cover of their debut Middle Grade fabulist novel in verse, Murray Out of Water, releasing from Quill Tree/HarperCollins on May 21, 2024! Here’s the story: Twelve-year-old Murray O’Shea loves the ocean. It could be because it never asks her to be someone she’s not, something her mother refuses to do. But Murray also shares a…

Mamo, by Sas Milledge
Tumblr media
⭐⭐⭐⭐
When Mamo, the witch of Haresden, died without a proper burial, the local magic went haywire: harvests are failing, the tides are rising, the fae have begun to overstep their boundaries, and Jo's attic has a new resident poltergeist! Orla, Mamo's estranged granddaughter, has returned to set matters right. But that could mean binding herself to the village for the rest of her life, the very fate she left to avoid. With Jo's help, Orla will have to find a way to save Haresden without sacrificing herself in the process.
This was an adorable graphic novel with a cute sapphic side plot. The plot is very simple, with not much more to it than what's in the summary, but I'm glad it wasn't padded with filler. This way the story was short and sweet, taking just as long as it needed and no longer. The character interactions were really the star of the show, here.
While anyone can appreciate the love story, I feel the themes of being fundamentally misunderstood by family will resonate strongest with a queer audience. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the magic in this story was a metaphor for anything, but Orla's struggle certainly had parallels.

Black Cloak #4 by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey. Cover by McLaren. Variant covers by (2) Sas Milledge and (3) McLaren. Out in April.
"A break in the case may have come too late as things heat up for Black Cloaks Essex and Pax, forcing Essex to face her past and confront it head-on… quite literally. Mermaids mourn. Black Cloaks dig. And worlds threaten to collide, which maybe isn't the worst thing?"

did you draw your pfp? it's really cool either way!
I did not! My pfp artwork was made by Sas Milledge.
Sas is a Naarm/Melbourne-based illustrator who, at this point in time, makes their own comics. Her art is absolutely fantastic.
Back in the big heyday of the Les Mis fandom, Sas was on tumblr as the user @batcii. They have since deleted their blog, but their art was unmatched in the fandom (as well as some others like The Raven Cycle).
My pfp is Sas' rendition of Eponine Thenardier :)
Please check out her pages if you can!
