Here's the general workflow of how I colour in CSP. I usually spend most of my time on lineart, as I enjoy it most, so I keep my rendering simple. Sometimes I skip some of the steps below :)

Step 1: flats. I add a 'Multiply' layer on top at 10-20% opacity and fill with single colour, usually peach-y one since I like my colours to be warm.

Step 2: gradients. Here I add some variation to the flat colours. I use airbrush for this, or sometimes low-opacity brush that allows colour mixing (Magda). I add blush and gradients to hair and clothing using similar but darker colours.

Step 3: shadows. I use solid round brush (G-pen) and just block in shadow areas on a separate layer set at 'Multiply'. Sometimes I use different colour for skin/clothing/hair.

Step 4: smooth parts of shadow where needed. Not all shadows are sharp and I use Blend tool to soften some areas.

Step 5: adding colour variety. Essentially, I improvise and play with adding different colours until I like it (or hate it and delete everything). I use 'Soft light' and 'Hard lights-out add different colours, usually with airbrush. And add accents (reflections) on 'Overlay' layer.

Another favorite Rusty Quill Gaming fic of mine--Aftershocks by @knifemartin! I was absolutely blown away by the worldbuilding, the varying relationships and their different forms of love and intimacy, and the clear and vivid visuals throughout. I have been craving Zolf, Wilde, and Sasha living together as a happy little family ever since I finished it, and I think often about the scene where Zolf discovers that Wilde is an angel. The various visuals in the story definitely inspired this bind--in particular, the gold and white of Wilde's former and current wings and the wings themselves.

This is another book that makes use of the new things I learned during Renegade's February binderary event. It also uses double-core endbands, has trimmed (and splattered) edges, and uses a chapter header motif that I've seen floating around in bookbinding spaces occasionally and that I've been wanting to implement in some of my own binds! I was also able to finally make use of the white fibrous paper with gold squares stamped onto it (for the half-title page) and the gold fabric-like paper (for the endpapers), both of which I've had in my paper horde for ages.

And, of course, my favorite part of this bind--the wings on the covers! I found a tutorial online for an angel wing wall decoration, scaled it down, and cut out all the feathers using my Silhouette and a white fabric/paper roll I picked up at a used craft store (I think it's wallpaper, but I'm not quite sure!). Then, I glued all the feathers down to a base before gluing the wings themselves to the covers. I really like the 3D effect I got by not gluing down the tips of the feathers, and I think they feel really nice to the touch! I had a very strong vision for this book, and being able to realize it so cleanly was so so much fun.

Something I’ve come to appreciate in video games recently is when a game about some special place needing to be saved by a newcomer who just showed up doesn’t actually have everything go to hell before the protagonist shows up or within a few minutes of them arriving.

To use the example that really made me appreciate this trope, I actually really like how in Psychonauts, Raz/the-player gets to experience Camp Whispering Rock as more or less normal for a while before Oleander’s big ‘steal a bunch of kid brains and stick them in an army of psychic-death-tanks to take over the world’ plan gets revealed, Lilli gets kidnapped by the giant, hulking traumatized lungfish and everything really goes bad.

Like I feel that most games would have all that stuff happen within the first five or ten minutes or so, but with Psychonauts, somewhere between a third and a full half of a playthrough can potentially take place before night falls and everything really goes bad.

Just to give an example, look at how much the game restricts your movement around Whispering Rock in the early game, or rather doesn’t actually restrict it. I think it’s easy to imagine a version of the game which blocks off the different areas of the camp until that area’s relevant mission became available. But no, the only real roadblock to exploration the player faces in the early game is the first mind level. Once Raz completes Basic Braining, the entire rest of the camp becomes open to explore at your leisure.

Heck, the game even encourages exploration by being deliberately vague on where exactly Sasha Nein’s secret lab is. And with the combination of the game both explaining how PSI-Challenge Markers work right in the tutorial and teasing you with a ‘New Psychic Power When You Reach Level 10’ whenever you level up, and a lot of those Markers and Cards being accessible even before you unlock Levitation, the game is already nudging you to go out and explore the camp. And that’s not even mentioning the Scavenger Hunt items.

Or how while the game does direct you to Ford Cruller after the first Brain Tumbler experiment, it’s entirely possible, even likely, that you’ve ALREADY met Ford thanks to simply dropping into one of the fast-travel stumps while exploring.

I mean, consider this; it’s entirely feasible and without too much trouble for Raz to have Pyrokinesis before he even learns PSI-Blast from Sasha. And to have Pyrokinesis, Telekinesis and Invisibility by the time he fights the Blueprint Tank at the end of the Brain Tumbler Experiment. Heck, if you’re really going the grindy-route, basically ALL the collectables in camp, save for one scavenger hunt item, can be acquired before nightfall.

And personally, I really like that you can do this.

Because it feels like Raz/the player gets the chance to experience Camp Whispering Rock as a camp in a more relaxed, easy-going state before night falls, Oleander’s plot is fully revealed and everything becomes a lot more urgent and dangerous. Instead of being thrust into the meat of the action right off the bat, Raz gets the chance to explore and learn and basically do the stuff he actually WANTED to when he came to Whispering Rock.

Thematically, it fits really well with just how driven Raz is to become a Psychonaut, as well as the limited time he seems to have before his dad comes to pick him up. Why wouldn’t he throw himself into exploring, learning and generally doing everything he can at Whispering Rock with what little time he had?

And it also fits nicely with the rest of the game as well. It makes the first third/half of the game feel like Raz is actually learning to become a Psychonaut, and the battle against Linda, breaking into the asylum and rescuing Lili, Sasha and Mia feel Raz is putting everything learned in the first third/half of the game into practice.

Or how Ford’s faith and confidence in Raz’s abilities start making a lot more sense if Raz has both picked up and become reasonably proficient in FIVE psychic powers in what was basically an afternoon.

Honestly I wish we could see this sort of thing in more games with this sort of ‘hero arrives at a super special place and has to save it from destruction’ premise. Just let the protag/player explore and experience the place in a more casual, relaxed manner before everything goes to shit. Like give them a reason to get invested and CARE about this place so it feels all the better to actually save it.

Opening was the wrong word. The actual opening is actually BETTER in dd2 because it's about your character instead of some random chucklefuck who doesn't matter. I mean the fight with Grigori (the dragon) and the way it's framed.

In dd1 you desperately grab a sword because your fucking home is being attacked. Your [ambiguous relationshipped woman] is scared and people who your character would have HAD to know growing up (even if you've only known them for a few seconds as a player) are being killed by a dragon. It's a desperate, hopeless bid that leads to your death and revival as Arisen.

In dd2 you start in the middle of the fight as a fucking guard. Some dude who's literally hired to do this. You're just there, watching your coworkers get swept around cause not even a militia can stop the dragon. There is no desperation it's just what you're meant to do. Some generic woman shoots an arrow and completely fucking misses and you weakly wave your shield to protect her from the fire despite there being an entire 15+ feet between you. All of it is a memory flashback so there are no stakes, immersively. You have no interaction with the generic woman who can't aim a bow at all before the fight and your only interaction after is clearly meant to do nothing but say "hey this is the intended romance so don't forget to come back here and do her quests okay?"

It's a tepid re-imagining of an intro that speaks to the studio not understanding what made the scene good.

There is. A blandness to the opening of dd2 compared to dd1 imo

you're sims are so well designed! idk if this makes sense but you make your sims skin look like real skin? the details are incredible. Are there skin details that you have to add on all your sims or is it just making them based off Vibes(tm)?

1. skin overlays... these are really the key to getting realistic skin. here's some of my favs on a random base sim

3. hairlines! idk if this counts in what you were asking for but I think hairlines really help sims look more realistic. again, here's some favs

4. highlights/perspiration. just some extra shimmer to your sims face. it might make your sim look oily or sweaty so it doesnt look great on them all, but I think it helps with realism

I think both options are fine but I usually add all these things to my sims. so..idk I hoped this helped at least a little bit

at a cybercafe. he’s there to meet with nagi (who’s running late unsurprisingly) and you’re seated at the desk beside him. he’s struggling with the mechanics of the game he’s playing and after cringing and pitying his attempts, you decide to help out. after you give him a step by step tutorial (while humbly bragging about your high score) he hands you a wad of cash for your time. your brows furrow. “hey, do i look like some charity case to you ?” you question as you tuck the cash into your pocket 🧍‍♂️. reo blinks. he frantically denies your accusation and you let him off the hook right as nagi arrives. reo introduces you two and he’s surprised to find that you and nagi already know each other, gaming buddies who had met at that cafe. reo is looking to get more into games so you two exachange numbers, and from that day on you all become some sort of trio

Q2– WHAT DO OTHERS THINK OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP ?

nagi likes you. well, that’s mostly because you two play video games with each other. he doesn’t particularly care about your relationship all that much, but he also doesn’t mind having you around. he DOES mind the fact that reo can’t seem to stop talking about you. it’s always “do you wanna hear this funny joke amy told me ?” or “oh! that reminds me of what amy said..” he’s low key sick of it but he can’t bring himself to tell reo to shut up, so he nods and gives an occasional “uh huh” as he plays games on his phone while reo goes on about you

reo’s parents aren’t too involved in his personal life, but they do hope your relationship is just a phase. they want reo to marry some rich heiress and expand the mikage empire, not some normal civilian girl. they’re really sweet to you though. you’ve only met them once when reo introduced you, but they were pretty chill. you couldn’t help but feel on edge the entire time, but you’d think anyone would feel that way when standing next to the mikage billionaires.

your friends are more invested in your relationship than you are 🤦‍♀️ your close friends are pretty normal about your relationship, but they’re always teasing you about your ‘billionaire boyfriend’. also keep in mind that once you’re dating reo you are no longer allowed to be broke. if you miss a dinner party because it’s out of budget, your friends will immediately get on your case : “what about your boyfriend?” “just ask your sugar daddy for money.” you try to avoid to because you don’t want reo feeling like you’re only with him for money, but trust me it’s okay. he’d never think that, and honestly normally you wouldn’t have to ask. at the beginning of your relationship he offered to have monthly deposits paid to your account but since that was early in the relationship you refused to be polite. now you’ve been looking for ways to bring his offer back up to him without seeming like a gold digger 🤦‍♀️

Q3 — WHO FELL FIRST ; WHO FELL HARDER ?

reo fell first, and i can imagine you being kinda oblivious to his intentions. i imagine that when he realized he liked you, he’d try to win you over with lots of gifts and expensive items. you’d take it greatfully but you always thought nothing of it; nagi seemed to be spoiled by reo as well so you simply saw it as a benefit of being friends with a mikage. in fact, i can totally see you sibbling zoning him at some point 😭 like maybe he notices your shoes are worn out so he buys you a new, more expensive pair, and when you ask him if he got it because he noticed your shoes were pretty unwearable, he says yes and you tell him he’s like a brother, constantly looking out for you. this sends reo over the edge and triggers him to be more direct. soon he’s buying you flowers, and eventually he straight up asks you on a date. you agree immediately and it catches him by surprise because all this time a part of him believed you didn’t share his affections, but you admit that all along you thought he didn’t like you and you didn’t want to be egotistical and assume he did 🤦‍♀️ yeah both of yall share a brain cell but that’s okay 🤞

i can’t say exactly who fell harder, but i believe you often have your relationship with reo on your mind more than he does. i can imagine you always kind of overthinking your relationship: what his parents think of you, if you’re good enough for him, how long till you break up, etc. it’s the pressure of dating the heir to some gigantic company. although you love reo for who he is outside his last name, as his partner you’re very immersed in his life as a corporate heir. you’ve had to attend all sorts of dinners and events and each time you can’t help but feel out of place. reo plays the role of calming you down and reassuring you that you’re more than enough, fuck what anyone else has to say. i’d say you’re both equally spretty smitten with each other, but you take the cake in terms of being more invested—because of the circumstances, your relationship often spends a lot more time in your head than reo’s.

Why Hollis Forsythe is a Deeper Character Than You Realize

So ya'll seem to like my essay on why Loboto's Labyrinth is a good tutorial level for Psychonauts 2. I've wanted to write an essay on the rest of the cast as well, so I decided to start with the second character we head into the mind of: Hollis Forsythe.

We are first introduced to Hollis when she comes to greet the cast after they land at the Motherlobe. I have played this game with my friends and my step-dad, and both parties initially believed Hollis was the mole due to her saying she didn't hear the crew's call for help and her initial dismissal at the idea of a mole being in the Psychonauts.

She is shown to be strict, serious, and maybe has a bit of an ego due to her preference for "Second Head" instead of Lesser Head, and with how she conducts herself after the casino mission. She isn't exactly soft towards interns, particularly Raz, and she can easily be seen as intimidating.

I do think it's rather odd that she would put a psychic intern under the mentorship of a non-psychic employee, but think of the situation she has been put in.

Truman is out of commission, and she has to keep the whole place running, and a mole is possibly running around about to bring back the biggest threat to the Psychonauts ever, their budget is getting tight, and a new intern has plopped into her lap.

I am choosing to believe that Hollis put Raz under the mentorship of Nick Johnsmith as a temporary thing, and would have given him a proper mentor afterward (given that none of the interns are mentoring under Sasha, I believe that Hollis would have given Raz to Sasha if things went differently.)

However, after she gives your mentor, you can ask her about her diploma, and she mentions being an intern at the Neurological Hospital for one year before joining the Psychonauts.

We learn in Hollis's mind that the reason she left was because while she was interning there, she came up with a new method that could save lives, but Dr. Potts had stolen her work and claimed all the credit. Appallled at this, Hollis used Mental Connection to try and mess with Dr. Potts, but ended up breaking him and they had to call in the Psychonauts to help. Truman gave her the position after this.

It is interesting that this hospital internship seems to be so central to Hollis as a character given that it was only for one year. However, it does seem to have affected her character greatly. She is immensely worried about the safety of the children she mentors, after all, and there are several figments of people being hurt or being cared for in both of her minds. Hollis's Classroom, while important to establish Hollis, is not where Hollis's character shines.

That will have to be Hollis's Hot Streak.

In Hollis's Hot Streak, we go through the Pharmacy, the Maternity Ward, and Cardiology to get three gazillion dollars to enter the High Rollers lounge and fight the Lady Luctopus. In each of these areas, we get a good insight into Hollis's thought process.

Side note: the fact that the hub area is a six-sided DIE in the MORGUE...

Anyway, in the Maternity Ward, we see that Hollis actually has a very cynical view of babies and those who want them. Most obvious is the rich couple who only want a baby for their own gain. The fact that there's some emotional baggage only accessible through dark thoughts is also something to think about. In this area, when we go to the backroom, we hear Hollis say "Well, of course, the whole system is rigged! But I mean, I'm just one person! What could I do about it?" which reads very heavily like learned helplessness almost. Given that, if you go talk to Hollis in the Motherlobe after your family arrives, she mentions that "all families are terrible", it does imply Hollis might not have a good relationship with her family.

In the Pharmacy, the entire point is to fix the Pillinko Machine so you can win. With Hollis's heart in the wrong place, it's up to us to try and make better connections in order to get to the backrooms. When we're there, Hollis says "Swallowing your feelings sounds bad, but really, who wants to hear about those ugly things anyway?" She's clearly had to repress these emotions for a while.

In Cardiology, you bet on suits of cards in race. However, Hearts has a broken leg. Although Hearts is told to stay off the leg by their doctor, their doctor is also their boss, and if they miss another race, they'll be fired. They are being exploited. Makes me wonder if that's how Hollis felt when Dr. Potts stole her work. In the backrooms, Hollis says "Different race, same runner. I can do this on my own, I don't need anybody's help, I CAN'T need anybody's help." Hollis clearly feels overworked and stressed about the situation but feels as though she cannot ask for help from those around her.

There's still a lot about Hollis's mind that interests me. The mental barriers you have to shoot through blocking your way, the religious imagery that's also in her mind, etc. But overall, I think Hollis is a much deeper character than we're lead to believe, as she doesn't get to do much after the Casino mission. But still, Hollis is really interesting to analyze.

EDIT: I AM COMPLETELY DUMB AND FORGOT TO MENTION: The fact that Hollis associates being a doctor with gambling is also really interesting. Yes this is because of Raz's actions, but the several ways she associates the two is fascinating. You have to wonder how many patients Hollis might have seen die in her time as an intern.

A thousand years later and I finally started psychonauts 2; gonna put my first impressions under the cut, so unless you don't got a problem with spoilers, you may want to stay out of here

I loved the opening monolog from our beautiful boy Raz and HIS DOODLES RAZ I LOVE YOU

I was in awe of the graphics and controls, THE SELECTION SCREEN WAS SO COOL AND JUST DOING STUFF IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE WAS FUN CAUSE IT WAS ALL POLISHED

That being said, as someone who's terrified of the dentist, I was. A little bit squicked out by the dental stuff in Loboto's head. Like the imagery and sounds? 10/10 from a design and interactive viewpoint but also. Eww.

I ah. May have died 3 times during the levitation sequence.

The tutorial isn't great imo. It doesn't communicate things in a way thats about showing you things. It just comments in the problem and then a text window pops up telling you actual things.

next we have the main trio from the fifth realm! there is some cool official art by the author out there and that is what inspired me to try doing digital art, i even watched some of the youtube tutorials she linked on her website! as i am a writer and want to draw my own characters one day i thought it will be a good idea to practice on some of my favorite characters and right now i am obsessed with aranel aina and meizan (i would basically die for meizan).

i know these look really different from what a a vora posted but i wanted to put my own spin on the characters (see what i did there?) because anime style they tend to have the same face (no hate, i love anime) so i wanted them to look more varied.

i am not sure of ethnicities. we know that meizan is east asian and aranel reads privileged white boy through and through. but aina is hard to pin down. my friend sasha told me to her aina "read very black" in terms of her righteous anger, mistreatment by society and also her interactions with aranel so i kind of went with that as an inspiration for aina. she also said aina reads like a younger zelie from children of blood and bone and i kind of see that now. i hope nobody minds!
