Ch17: Blind-sided Verse 2
Meanwhile, Tailor was tinkering with the satellite phone, trying to figure out who had been giving orders to the raiders. As he worked, he couldn't help but think about Trace. He knew he was at least bi, but he wasn't sure if Trace was into him or not. He had been reading into their interactions, trying to figure out if Trace's comments about him being different were because he was trans or because he was interesting.
He shook his head, trying to focus on the task at hand. As much as he wanted to know how Trace felt, it didn't matter at the moment. They had a job to do, and he couldn't let his personal feelings get in the way.
Rachelle, who had been pointedly ignoring the highschool note passing going on between Erzabet and Trace, arrived first. "What's on your mind, Tailor?" Rachelle asked, noticing his preoccupation.
Tailor shook his head, as if coming out of a daze. "Just thinking about what we're going to do with this thing. We could use it to our advantage."
Trace nodded. "Yeah, if we can figure out who's behind it all, we might be able to put a stop to it for good."
Erzabet added, "But we need to be careful. Whoever is behind this has a lot of power."
Rachelle smiled grimly. "Don't worry. We can handle it."
Tailor, Rachelle, Trace, and Erzabet had just finished packing up their belongings when they heard a sound from behind them. They turned around to find a survivor standing there, with a bandaged hand. She looked nervous, fidgeting with the bandage on her hand.
"Who are you?" asked Tailor.
The woman hesitated for a moment before finally answering. "My name is Alice. I followed you back here. I need to get out of the city."
Rachelle stepped forward. "What happened to your hand? Let me take a look at it."
Alice pulled her hand back. "No, it's fine. I just need to get out of here. Please, can you lead me to safety?"
Tailor, Rachelle, Trace, and Erzabet huddled together to discuss their options. "We don't know her," said Rachelle. "She could be dangerous."
"But what if she's telling the truth?" countered Trace. "We can't just leave her here."
Erzabet spoke up. "I'll go scout ahead, make sure it's safe. We can follow her out of the city."
Tailor nodded. "Okay, but be careful. We don't know what's out there."
Erzabet disappeared into the darkness, leaving the others to watch over Alice. They remained silent, each lost in their own thoughts.
Finally, Alice broke the silence. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I just...I had to get out of there."
"What happened?" asked Rachelle.
Alice hesitated again, but then spoke. "I was with a group of survivors, but they...they started doing things that I didn't agree with. They hurt people, and I couldn't be a part of it anymore. I had to leave."
The four exchanged glances, unsure of what to do next.
Suddenly, Erzabet reappeared. "It's clear. We can head out now."
They packed up their belongings and led Alice out of the city, following the directions given by Erzabet. As they walked, they kept a watchful eye out for any danger.
After a while, they finally made it to the outskirts of the city, where they stopped to rest. Alice looked relieved, but also scared.
"Thank you," she said to the group. "I don't know what I would have done without you."
Tailor spoke up. "It's okay. We're just glad we could help. But we need to know more about what happened with your group. What did they do?"
Alice hesitated before finally answering. "They were... raiders. They would attack other survivors and take their supplies. They even started killing people who got in their way. I couldn't be a part of it anymore. I had to leave."
Rachelle looked at Alice's bandaged hand. "Did they hurt you?"
Alice looked down at her hand, and then back up at Rachelle. "Yes. One of them... cut me with a knife. But I'll be okay."
The group exchanged glances once again, realizing that they had just led a former raider out of the city. But it was too late now. They had already helped her.
As they continued on their journey, the four kept a close eye on Alice, watching for any signs of danger. But she seemed genuinely grateful to them, and they began to relax.
Little did they know, the danger they should have been worried about was right under their noses, in the form of Alice's alleged wound.

Ch: 17 Blind-sided Verse 1
Rachelle and Trace sat against the wall, their bikes leaned against them, as they waited for Erzabet to return from her scouting mission. They had a map of the city sprawled out in front of them, tracing their potential routes of escape.
"So what do you think, Trace?" Rachelle asked, her finger tapping the map. "Should we try to leave by the eastern tunnel or the southern one?"
Trace leaned in, studying the map intently. "The eastern tunnel has less traffic, so it might be less likely we'll run into any trouble. But the southern one is closer to where we need to be in the long run."
Rachelle nodded, considering his words. "Yeah, that's true. But there's a risk of getting cornered in the southern tunnel. We'll have to be really careful."
Just then, Erzabet returned, her eyes scanning the area as she approached. "I didn't see any zombies, but I did hear some commotion coming from the northern part of the tunnels."
Trace and Rachelle exchanged a look. "That's not good," Trace said. "We should check it out."
Erzabet nodded in agreement, and they all stood, readying their weapons. Tailor was still tinkering with the satellite phone, lost in concentration.
"Hey, Tailor, we're heading out," Rachelle called.
Tailor looked up, surprised. "Oh, yeah, sure. I'll just finish up here."
The three of them set off towards the northern tunnels, the sound of their bikes echoing through the empty passageways. As they neared the commotion, they could hear the sounds of a struggle and shouting.
They rounded a corner and found a group of survivors cornered by a swarm of zombies. The survivors were frantically trying to fend them off with whatever weapons they had, but they were clearly outnumbered.
Without hesitation, the four of them charged into the fray, taking down the zombies one by one. Rachelle's gun rang out in the enclosed space, and Trace's axe sliced through the air.
Erzabet was a blur of motion, darting in and out of the swarm with supernatural speed. The survivors looked on in amazement as the four of them fought off the zombies.
Finally, the last of the zombies fell, and the group was able to catch their breath.
"Thank you," one of the survivors said, panting. "We were done for until you all showed up."
Rachelle shrugged. "It's what we do. We're heading out of the city soon, though. Do you want to come with us?"
The survivors looked at each other, clearly considering the offer. "We'll have to talk it over," one of them said. "But thank you again. We owe you our lives."
With that, the four of them mounted their bikes and headed back to their makeshift base.
Erzabet was always one to be direct, but this time she was a bit more cautious. As she walked with Trace, she couldn't help but feel jealous of Tailor. She had seen the way Trace had been looking at him, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something there.
"Trace, I have to ask," she said finally, breaking the silence. "What do you think of Tailor?"
Trace looked at her quizzically. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, do you like him?" Erzabet pressed. "As more than a friend, I mean."
Trace's cheeks turned a little pink. "Um, I guess I do," he admitted, "Why do you ask?"
Erzabet couldn't bring herself to say the truth: that Tailor was also into Trace. "Just curious," she said instead, hiding her disappointment.
Trace didn't seem to notice anything off. "He's just really cool," he said with a shrug. "And he's really good at what he does."
Erzabet nodded, feigning interest. "Yeah, I guess so," she said, trying to keep the hurt out of her voice.
