Anyone who says unsettling, traumatic and disempowering things never happen to male superheroes should read Batman: Court of Owls.
From the super hero comics I’ve read, this one is certainly one of the most physically and mentally intense one for the hero - even more so than Arkham Asylum, which looks like this and is entirely psychological / dream-like in it’s plot.
The labyrinth part of Court of Owls is one of the most memorable comic parts I’ve ever read, because Batman’s suffering, both mental and physical was depicted in such an effective way, not to mention the panel positioning oh god that was pure genious
I bow my head to the artist who thought of that, because depicting terrible events in pictures in such a way that the reader actually gets shaken by them as well is way harder than you’d think.

Animosity and Geek Life
Currently there's a prevailing view that geeky interests are caught up in a civil war of sorts; different interests within conventions, gaming, comics, and STEM locking horns over perceived focuses and goals. Whether it be about something dealing with females or feminism, what should and wouldn't be allowed in creative expression, or even business practice. Rather than enjoying one another's diverse company fans of all walks of life are glaring at each other from our trenches yelling "are you happy now?" And it is a view I somewhat agree with, if not because it has been going on forever for the simple reason fans by definition hold interest in what they like and will fight for it. There is one aspect of all this that isn't as apparent though- as is true in real life war, the struggle to resources and space within our respective industries have come into play. Suddenly we are competing for the same space and that is bullshit.
now obviously this argument in practice requires nuance. Different industries act differently at different times. However there are forces that common pop up and they need to go away. One is the obvious control freaks who pull strings to try and control what is and isn't published- Sarkesian and the likes. These people gert the shit they deserve and talking about them is wasted space. Not so talked about are the industry opinions that unnecessarily limit what can be put out there. Company controlled franchises will as a rule only put as much out there that sells, and while the consumer needs to vote with the dollar companies should know that the consumer will buy more if they provide it. Teen Titans Go! Should not be the only Teen Titans show out there and fans like myself would make a more serious show profitable, as an example. This is only a "at best" interpretation however- the cynic in me is telling me that the cultural wars are somewhat synthetic. Companies more than limited by the almighty dollar, they purposefully will make fans fight for the same space for maximum profit. Why are with as diverse the fan groups are, would there be a limit in what is printed? Why not shed more light on competent fan creation and, with licensing fees of course, let the creative presses flow? Because there is profit to be made in high demand low supply.
media industries, as well as the usual suspects, are to blame for any toxicity in what should be open and spirited consumption of media that makes room for whatever it can hold. Doesn't matter where, those who random this culture do more harm than feminazis. I just hope they realize the ones who win are those that treat their consumer not as a dollar sign but as a person.

About #changethecover and women in comics
WARNING: RENZI LEVEL ENGLISH
Ok, I never get serious on Tumblr, and for reason. This website has many flaws: racism from every side, extremist ideologies, and so on. This is why I never speak about my ideas or opinions.
But sometimes even Tumblr can make my nerdy heart aches. Yes, we are talking about #changethecover.
One of the last years trend were make comic books more “suitable for women”. what does it mean? well, more female-driven titles, less-sexualized costumes (even if males heroes keep their “painted” skin suits), and a generally positive attitude toward female characters. Someone think it’s cool: I personally don’t care. A character doesn’t deserve a special treatment because of its sex. Strong female characters can be everywhere and anytime. Powergirl isn’t less strong or positive than Batgirl becasue she shows more chest. They have different personalities and storylines, but they are still positive portrait of women.
And we are talking of Batgirl here. Yeah, the cover that caused all of that big mess last week.
I know that a lot of people started reading comics in the more recent times, after blockbusters like Avengers, Iron Man and Batman, and maybe are unfamiliar with older storylines and issues that the characters they love went trough. It’s not bad to say “hey, I liked the movies, so I started reading the comics that inspired them, like, one moth ago”. There’s no shame to admit that you just joined this marvelous world. A new fan it’s no different from a long-time fan. they shares the both passions.
What makes me sad is that a lot of people just assume wrong things, based only on their feelings and their point of view. “No but comics gals are too sexualized!” that’s true, and so are the men. “Yeah, but women outfits are impratical!” and so are the men’s. it’s a superheroes world, get over it. they are superior to real humans. But i’m not going to argue about this: everyone is entitled to their opinion, as long as they are expressed with civil manners.
So, women in comics. Now everyone loves Batgirls, right? female-sidekick of Batman, super smart, red hair.
Her fanbase has grown a lot to the new generatios, a her new makeover appeals a lot of people. So where’s the problem with her new variant cover ( a variant= cover you aren’t forced to buy)?
Joker is in, paying omage to the masterpiece “The Killing Joke.” The rest is history: Babs is shot, paralized (but not abused as many says, as stated many times by official sources) and used as a weapon against her father’s mental sanity. The Joker shows himself as the monster he is. Batman saves the day, but Barbara is forced to a weelchair, but becomes the Oracle, the precious Bat-family Mastermind. She not only becomes a magnificent representation of different abled persons, but she manages to recover from her trauma and come back, stronger than before.
In the New 52 things have changed a bit. Yes, Joker DID shoot Babs, but she came back on her own legs in her new pop and glamorous series.
And now, the big deal. Once the cover is relesead, Internet rages above the artist and the entire DC comics. why? because Babs is crying, in the cover. She’s crying because the monster that the Joker is (note: the Joker is pure evil. He’s not Harley Quinn, dark but playful, he’s not the Riddler. He’s mothafucking Joker, the villainest of the villains) is holding her, forcing the girl to deal with her trauma again.
what’s the matter? babs is strong enough to survive this thing again and come back stronger than before.
And so why everyone raged? they says that the comic supported violence agains women, they talked about rape (even if the Joker never raped Babs). Well, if that’s true, the new Thor comic support violence on me who doesn’t define themselves as feminist. If that’s true Batman, A Death in the Family (another famous story) support violence against boys.
New fans, please. If you don’t like the new cover, if that makes you feel uncomfortable (even if its the whole point of the cover), don’t buy it. I don’t like the Thor comic, I don’t buy it, for example.
But you are ignoring a important parts of Barbara Gordon’s character, the one that makes her much more than another drawning in a leather suit. She was scared, she had a trauma, a terrible one. But she was strong. She survived. Maybe the cover wasn’t the best for the tone that the Batgirl new series has shown in the past issues, but those were A SERIES of cover designed for the Jokers’s “carrier”, not for Batgirl.
You are not helping comics this way. You are making female characters less strong day by day by putting them on a pedestal. Women are much stronger than this. they don’t need hordes of people who protect them from everything. they can face things on their own. sometimes they lose, sometimes the win. Like men doo.
I want to see Barbara cry, because Barbara is human (well, inked human), I want to see her fall and rise again. Life isn’t made to make you confortamble, life is series of challenge. This is what Oracle’s story is about.
thanks for reading.

Yes, Batgirl is crying. Is it wrong for her to be showing emotion about a huge event in her life? The Joker caused her emotional and physical trauma. But do you know what else? He made her stronger. If it weren't for Joker shooting Barbara and everything else in the Killing Joke, it may not have influenced a hella strong young woman. Batgirl is one of my favourites, because she’s a strong woman, and a fighter.
What’s also bothering me is the fact that no one batted an eye at Commissioner Gordon being tortured, bound, choked, and humiliated, all while being completely naked, at the hands of The Joker. No one batted an eye at the fact that Robin got beaten and tortured to death by The Joker with a crowbar. It was on a cover, and it was way more violent than the cover that had to be scrapped. Why is everyone in a tizzy now over this Batgirl cover, when they weren't 27 years ago when The Killing Joke came out and they could see the photos of Barbara right away?
What’s even more, is that, as I’ve said recently it is a variant cover. Nobody even has to buy it but the people who love that cover. Rafael was paying homage to one of his favourite comics, and because of someone’s negative feedback, he asked for it to be taken down. Why is it fair that he has to do that, and not represent one of his favourite stories in a canonically correct cover just because someone didn’t like it?
They do not have to buy it. It is an alternate cover.
