@savetheseaturtlesinternational is a 501c3 non profit started in 1988 by @juansharks mother on the north shore of Oahu. The story of why she started it & her ohanas impact is another story but she raised Juan to swim out and save the sea turtles from the fishing line. He grew up right at Chuns reef where the honu (sea turtles) feed on the limu (seaweed) that grows on the rocks. As a surfer @juansharks was nervous about sharks, until he fell from a home made zip line from the road above Waimea to jump rock, he broke his back, legs, and feet and was paralyzed...after a year or more he was on his way to full recovery and the doctor recommended he get back into diving more to take the pressure and some of the pain away, it was then that he started using his fine art & Photography degree from @byuhawaii to photograph sharks and marine life & bring awareness to their plight. Happy New Year Everyone! Seems like a great time of the year to reset goals in every area of life. I’ve set so many and I’m excited for the process and challenge of working towards them. Setting the attitude to enjoy the process, the challenges that come present opportunities for growth in many aspects. I appreciate change and regardless of the outcome at the end of the year I will have accomplished and learned a lot in many ways. I think for me, the greatest challenge is finding the balance between where I spend my limited time in each of perhaps the widest range of goals I’ve set out in a while and how I adapt to the unforeseen waves of life that come and go. Time blocking and powering things out and not living on a 24 hour cycle is very helpful. Attitude of gratitude: I am so grateful for my @juansharks the most kind, genuine, and patient person I know, and my amazing seaster @oceanic.grace for surprise capturing these beautiful photos of @juansharks and I testing more prototypes of our signature @cressi1946 fins during a farewell fun dive for @harpseal111 💙 Miss you already. This little super girl and her amazing parents are helping to #SaveTheOcean seabirds, fish, turtles, and nature for today and the future. I am so grateful and inspired by those who donate their time to help offset human impacts by cleaning up the beach and ocean. We will be able to reuse some of the items we found. In the 2nd photo I cleaned the beach with a wonderful ohana(family) and some more amazing people who had just moved to the island and day 1 chose to spend their time to help keep it beautiful and marine life and sea birds safe from the tiny broken pieces of plastic in the sand that are the easiest for accidental ingestion. @Juansharks and I found this shark with a rope cutting deeply in around her head. We made several careful attempts to cut the line but given how deeply the line is embedded it was difficult but Juan got a couple strands cut but much remains. Meet Zerah Ho’omaka Hou which means ‘new beginning’ she is a small very identifiable female galapagos. She was just named and adopted through our @oneoceansharks shark ID adoption program by one of our wonderful conservation supporters @nupoorde whom I am grateful to have dove with @oneoceandiving in the past and I hope sometime again in the near future. We will continue to monitor her health and attempt to remove the line when possible to do so as safely as possible depending on the environmental conditions and shark situation. Its heart breaking to see animals like this suffering from human impacts and we do our best to remove as much line and marine debris as possible. We also work with a program to help save marine life from entanglement through @savetheseaturtlesinternational where you can sponsor a underwater debris/fishing line removal in your name or in honor of a friend or brand.
